The house of Montmorency was one of the most prestigious families of the French nobility and gave France several constables whose most illustrious Prince of the Renaissance: Anne de Montmorency. The five volumes are as follows: The first volume is dedicated to the genealogy and chronology of Montmorency from 960 until 1531, shortly before Anne became Constable, that is to say, the more fault function after King . The second volume contains the life and the Anne Francis, Marshal of France from 1494 until 1579 third volume is occupied by several biographies, Henry Constable of France.; Charles Duke of Amville, grand admiral of France; & That of Henry II, Duke of Montmorency, from 1547 until 1632. Fourth and fifth volume contains the life of François-Henri de Montmorency, Marshal Duke of Luxembourg from 1628 until 1695. This is the first volume we find the general history of Montmorency, including the Middle Ages where Montmorency toiled with brilliance, but Desormeaux's work does not purport to be exhaustive, it has made choices, including biographical; However, the work of a high quality is undoubtedly the best that has been devoted to this illustrious family that blends so well with that of France; thus tells this anecdote that when in 1764 the Duchess of Montmorency presented the work of Louis XV Desormeaux, asking: "Her Majesty she knows the history of the house of Montmorency? "The King replied:" Madam, I know the history of France. " --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale. »

Two finely illustrated scrolls with 35 scenes in ink and color entitled "Ezo shima kikan" or "Ezo to kikan" ("Strange sights in the island of Ezo"), by Okumaru Hata. Two scrolls, 300 x 9110 mm. & 300 x 9540 mm. [Japan: ca. 1818-43]

Large-scale colonization of Hokkaido Island ("Ezo") began in the mid-18th century. Hata (1764-1808), a Tokugawa bakufu official who served in Hokkaido from 1798-1800, wrote a self-illustrated text concerning the ethnology of the Ainu, the aboriginal inhabitants of the island. A copy of his manuscript was prepared ca. 1800 with woodblock illustrations and the only known copy was in the Hyde collection (sold Christie's NY, 7 October 1988, lot 48 for $66,000). A series of manuscript copies of Hata's original manuscript were made and circulated, each with notable variations. Our two scrolls are remarkably complete. The first scroll begins with a preface describing the long history of Japan's relations with Hokkaido (the Japanese were extremely anxious about Russia colonizing the island and were justifying their own territorial claims). Described also are the various rulers of the Matsumae fiefdom, which had been granted exclusive trading rights with the Ainu. The reason for the compilation of these texts was the official visit of the current lord Akihiro Matsumae who was making a tour of the southern part of the island which his clan controlled. Each fine brush and color illustration is prefaced with explanatory text. In the first scroll, we find a depiction of the mythological beginnings of Ezo, a tribal leader (with detailed descriptions of his clothes and language), his wife (describing her clothes and accessories), tattooed hand (how and why the Ainu do tattoos), ceremonial head wear, a necklace, a ceremonial tool, a sea otter, a group of Ainu leaders, a dance performed in front of the leaders, Ainu men and women drinking an alcoholic beverage, a native playing a long stringed instrument (with lyrics of the songs played), another drinking scene with three men clearly inebriated, a family (with extended comments on the polygamous structure of families), weapons (bows and arrows), and a scene of archery practice. The second scroll begins with a discussion of the medicinal value of the sea otter's liver. This is followed by a winter scene showing seven Ainu men preparing to launch their boats to hunt for sea otters, a government office where men are exchanging otters for rice and tobacco, an account of bear hunting with a depiction of a captured bear for the festivity of offering the bear to the gods, the sacrifice of the bear (I will not describe this but it is "special"), the scene of offering the dead bear to the gods, a banquet with Japanese visitors, Ainu houses, a religious house (exterior and interior views), religious rituals, Ainu games, "wishing a safe trip" to a group of hunters on a boat, etc. The beginning brocade endpapers of the scrolls are rather wormed but the illustrations and text are untouched. The backs of both scroll are flecked with mica.

Of Christ's Testaments, Baptism and the Supper. Three plates, one folding and hand-colored. Volumes III and IV are second issue. The 3 plates in Volume III, Mysterium Magnum, are astonishing in thei conception. It has been suggested that Rubens or some pupil or follower of his provided the drawings for these copper-plate engravings" (Hall, Alchemy, 45). Blake praised too the figures in this edition as being very beautiful; 'Michelangelo could not have done better." (G.E.Bentley, A Blake Bibliography, no.559). Bentley notes also that during Blake's lifetime these designs by D. A. Freher were printed only in the "Law edition" of Boehme's works, so it seems that Blake actually owned a set of this 1764-81 edition. These remarkable illustrations, printed only in this edition, help to elucidate Boehme's complex theories. In a way these are similar to those other fantastic engravings which were printed in Gichtel's "Eine kurtze Eröffnung und Anweisung der dreyen Principien und Welten im Menschen" published in Leiden in 1723, only that here, compared with Gichtel's work, the plates are folding, revealing by the flaps opening one after another the secrets of inner alchemy. Jacob Boehme (1575-1624), german visionary, is considered the founder of the german theosophy, which is a mystical theology. He began his career as a master shoemaker. The decisive event in Boehme's life occurred in 1600: "One day while sitting in his room in a state of melancholy, his eyes by chance caught the sunlight reflected from a pewter dish. His soul was immediately ushered into a mystical vision, and he maintained that the innermost part of the secrets of nature as well as the true nature of good and evil were revealed to him. In a quarter of an hour, he saw and knew more than he could have learned by years of study in the universities. At first full of doubt, he soon became convinced that he had received the gift of vision. When it was upon him, he could penetrate into the very heart and being of all things in creation"Despite his rejection during his life, Boehme's works were highly influential on subsequent thinkers, including Swedenborg, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Schelling, Heidegger and C. G. Jung. He was considered by Hegel "the first german philosopher" and by Schelling "an wonderful apparition in the history of mankind, and especially, in the history of german spirit". His teachings were echoed later in the writings of Friedrich Christoph Oetinger and Franz von Baader. He also influenced the development of high grade Freemasonry. At the same time occult researchers hold in high esteem his writings, M. A. Atwood, author of a remarkable work on spiritual alchemy considering him "the deepest writer on ontological subjects" (Apendix (49) to A Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery, William Tait 1918).Caillet, Manuel Bibliographique des Sciences Psychiques ou Occultes, 1289; Pritchard 331; Bentley, Blake Bibliography, 559; (photos available on request)

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charle [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Edinburgh Paradise regain'd, or the city set at liberty, to propagate and improve her trade and commerce. Being a curious dissertation thereon, and discovery of the disease that obstructs the growth and progress thereof. And an effectual remedy and cure therefor, by redressing and removing her grievances. ..... The city standing on a hill, set on a plain. An inland city immediately commence a maritime one, so as to join, and communicate, with the most navigable river in all Britain. The city beautified and adorned, for the more commodious entertainment of our patriot nobility and gentry, and inviting them to frequent their own metropolis, as before the incorporate Union. And all this done in a frugal, surprisingly cheap and far more easy way than hitherto has been proposed, or probably ever will be, yea is done for nothing, in regard of the profit and gain of some thousands of pounds annually, that attends this method; as is clearly made appear in the following pages of this essay; and in some cases f

[Edinburgh], 1764. 8vo., 28 + (2)pp. and with the folding engraved plan (shaved at one edge just touching part of ruled border), title-page a little soiled, in old (19th century?) linen-backed boards, upper joint worn, nonetheless a good copy. Only edition. A now uncommon and rather charming essay proposing various economic and engineering solutions to the Edinburgh 'disease' - a dirty crowded city in dire need of expansion and economic revival. Mein bemoans the fact that the city had gained much less from the Act of Union than any other city in Britain or Ireland and that the several small Scottish towns were vibrant with trade and were thus putting Edinburgh to shame. 'That this disease has such effect upon this city, as incapacitates and dispirits her trading inhabitants is too evident to be denied, for if we look but a little about us, go but to Newcastle upon Tyne, or a little westward to Kendal, Whitehaven, Liverpool, Manchester, or such like in South Britain, to Dumfries, Glasgow, Aberdeen, or such like in North-Britain; yea, the petty town of Dalkeith our door-neighbour. From these places you will see carravans of carriers with pack horses, waggons, &c. with all sorts of merchandize sent from their shops and warehouses, to furnish the inland country market-towns, and gentlemen's houses, with goods and merchandize, their roads thronged with such carriages; but nothing like that from our merchants shops in Edinburgh .....' [pp. 6-7]. Robert Mein had also published The city cleaned and country improven> (Edinburgh 1760).

Etching with engravings, signed and dated at lower center. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, some expert repairs at the back, otherwise in good condition. This plate is engraved by Cochin & Jacques Philippe Le Bas, after a painting by Joseph Vernet. Vernet was commissioned by Louis XV in 1753 to paint fifteen views of the main ports of France, and given the exceptional title of "peintre des marines de sa majesté". He spent twelve years travelling around the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Channel coasts with his family and servants in tow. The country was at war with England at the time, and Louis specifically requested that the artist show off the economic activities and maritime strength of France, which Vernet did to much acclaim. The majority of the paintings are in the Musée de la Marine in Paris. Dimensioni 750 540mm [Attributes: Signed Copy]

THE TALES OF THE GENII: OR, THE DELIGHTFUL LESSONS OF HORAM THE SON OF ASMAR. Faithfully Translated from the Persian Manuscript; and Compared with the French and Spanish Editions Published at Paris and Madrid. By Sir Charles Morell, Formerly Ambassador from the British Settlements in India to the Great Mogul

London: Printed for J. Wilkie, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1764.. Small quarto, two volumes: pp. [i-iii] iv [v] vi-viii [ix] x-xxix [xxx: blank] [1] 2-354; [i-ii] [1] 2-406 [407-408: blank], fourteen inserted plates with engravings from drawings by A. Walker, eighteenth-century full calf, front, rear and spine panels ruled in gold, spine panels richly tooled in gold, black leather title pieces affixed to spine panels. First edition. A popular collection of pseudo-oriental tales which went through at least seven editions by 1800. "An idiosyncratic manifestation of the eighteenth-century mania for Oriental tales inspired by Galland's translation of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS (1704-1717). The author was allegedly 'formerly ambassador in India to the Great Mogul,' but was in fact a British clergyman who had never traveled abroad. The stories imitate the style of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS. The 'exotic' names of the characters are often anagrams of English names. Morell's one substantive innovation is his conclusion, in which an evil magician flies off to wreak havoc in England -- an interesting if accidental foreshadowing of the menace from the East so effectively employed by Bram Stoker in DRACULA." - Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 1-55. Charles Dickens loved Ridley's stories as a child, making several allusions to them in later novels and Ridley's "The Adventures of Abudah the Merchant" inspired a key image in Coleridge's "Kubla Khan." Sheet measures 12.5 x 9.25" This map, published circa 1764, shows the course of the Menan River (Chao Phraya River) to the Gulf of Thailand, passing through the town of Bangkok. The Gulf is tinted with a light yellow and the river is outlined in a subtle blue. A ornamental compass rose appears to the right of the map, and a decorative border surrounds the title to the left. The map is a dark impression in very good condition, with wide original margins and very minor foxing in the margins outside the image.
