The Edinburgh Paradise regain'd, or the city set at liberty, to propagate and improve her trade and commerce. Being a curious dissertation thereon, and discovery of the disease that obstructs the growth and progress thereof. And an effectual remedy and cure therefor, by redressing and removing her grievances. ..... The city standing on a hill, set on a plain. An inland city immediately commence a maritime one, so as to join, and communicate, with the most navigable river in all Britain. The city beautified and adorned, for the more commodious entertainment of our patriot nobility and gentry, and inviting them to frequent their own metropolis, as before the incorporate Union. And all this done in a frugal, surprisingly cheap and far more easy way than hitherto has been proposed, or probably ever will be, yea is done for nothing, in regard of the profit and gain of some thousands of pounds annually, that attends this method; as is clearly made appear in the following pages of this essay; and in some cases f

[Edinburgh], 1764. 8vo., 28 + (2)pp. and with the folding engraved plan (shaved at one edge just touching part of ruled border), title-page a little soiled, in old (19th century?) linen-backed boards, upper joint worn, nonetheless a good copy. Only edition. A now uncommon and rather charming essay proposing various economic and engineering solutions to the Edinburgh 'disease' - a dirty crowded city in dire need of expansion and economic revival. Mein bemoans the fact that the city had gained much less from the Act of Union than any other city in Britain or Ireland and that the several small Scottish towns were vibrant with trade and were thus putting Edinburgh to shame. 'That this disease has such effect upon this city, as incapacitates and dispirits her trading inhabitants is too evident to be denied, for if we look but a little about us, go but to Newcastle upon Tyne, or a little westward to Kendal, Whitehaven, Liverpool, Manchester, or such like in South Britain, to Dumfries, Glasgow, Aberdeen, or such like in North-Britain; yea, the petty town of Dalkeith our door-neighbour. From these places you will see carravans of carriers with pack horses, waggons, &c. with all sorts of merchandize sent from their shops and warehouses, to furnish the inland country market-towns, and gentlemen's houses, with goods and merchandize, their roads thronged with such carriages; but nothing like that from our merchants shops in Edinburgh .....' [pp. 6-7]. Robert Mein had also published The city cleaned and country improven> (Edinburgh 1760).

Etching with engravings, signed and dated at lower center. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, some expert repairs at the back, otherwise in good condition. This plate is engraved by Cochin & Jacques Philippe Le Bas, after a painting by Joseph Vernet. Vernet was commissioned by Louis XV in 1753 to paint fifteen views of the main ports of France, and given the exceptional title of "peintre des marines de sa majesté". He spent twelve years travelling around the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Channel coasts with his family and servants in tow. The country was at war with England at the time, and Louis specifically requested that the artist show off the economic activities and maritime strength of France, which Vernet did to much acclaim. The majority of the paintings are in the Musée de la Marine in Paris. Dimensioni 750 540mm [Attributes: Signed Copy]

THE TALES OF THE GENII: OR, THE DELIGHTFUL LESSONS OF HORAM THE SON OF ASMAR. Faithfully Translated from the Persian Manuscript; and Compared with the French and Spanish Editions Published at Paris and Madrid. By Sir Charles Morell, Formerly Ambassador from the British Settlements in India to the Great Mogul

London: Printed for J. Wilkie, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1764.. Small quarto, two volumes: pp. [i-iii] iv [v] vi-viii [ix] x-xxix [xxx: blank] [1] 2-354; [i-ii] [1] 2-406 [407-408: blank], fourteen inserted plates with engravings from drawings by A. Walker, eighteenth-century full calf, front, rear and spine panels ruled in gold, spine panels richly tooled in gold, black leather title pieces affixed to spine panels. First edition. A popular collection of pseudo-oriental tales which went through at least seven editions by 1800. "An idiosyncratic manifestation of the eighteenth-century mania for Oriental tales inspired by Galland's translation of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS (1704-1717). The author was allegedly 'formerly ambassador in India to the Great Mogul,' but was in fact a British clergyman who had never traveled abroad. The stories imitate the style of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS. The 'exotic' names of the characters are often anagrams of English names. Morell's one substantive innovation is his conclusion, in which an evil magician flies off to wreak havoc in England -- an interesting if accidental foreshadowing of the menace from the East so effectively employed by Bram Stoker in DRACULA." - Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 1-55. Charles Dickens loved Ridley's stories as a child, making several allusions to them in later novels and Ridley's "The Adventures of Abudah the Merchant" inspired a key image in Coleridge's "Kubla Khan." [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Collective second edition, more complete than that published in 1751 in Berlin, and additionally containing Anti-Seneca, art to enjoy, man more than machine (which constitutes Volume III).       1764. First Edition . (ANDERSON, Adam). An Historical and Chronological Deduction of the Origin of Commerce, From the Earliest Accounts to the present Time. Containing An History of the great Commercial Interests of the British EmpireÂ… London: A. Millar, et al., 1764. Two volumes. Tall folio (10-1/2 by 17 inches), contemporary full brown calf rebacked with elaborately gilt-decorated spines laid down, burgundy morocco spine labels, raised bands. $8500.First edition of this important authoritative history of commerce, with a global authority that includes a focus on BritainÂ’s acquisition of “new American markets,” as well as the greater consequences of “the very extraordinary actions of the year 1720” when the South Sea Bubble burst (Sabin), complete with three large folding maps, handsome in contemporary calf.""The most comprehensive history of the earlier centuries of British overseas trade, Adam Anderson's Origin of Commerce was first published in the 1760s as the mercantile age was at its height. It was 'to the instrumentality of Commerce alone,' Anderson suggested, that 'the Britannic Empire is most peculiarly indebted for its Opulence and Grandeur"" (Ormrod, Rise of Commercial Empires, 1). Reflecting on Britain's economic ties to North America, Anderson shared a general feeling in the pre-revolutionary years ""that the colonies were to perform a dual role as producers of raw materials to be used by English manufacturers and as consumers of finished English products. This arrangement was seenÂ… as reciprocally advantageous to both England and America"" (Peskin, Manufacturing Revolution, 22). Praised by Adam Smith in Wealth of Nations (1776) as ""sober and judicious"" in his research, Anderson welcomed trade with the colonies and ""was delighted that Britain had acquired new American marketsÂ… He also congratulated the Americans on increasing their trade, 'perpetually increasing their useful productions, cultivating new plantations, and successfully attempting new materials for commerce.' He referred mainly to the raw materials produced by the southern coloniesÂ…. [as well as] New England lumber and food products of the mid-Atlantic coloniesÂ…. giving particular stress to those colonial products that might be useful to British manufacturing"" (Peskin, 22). In this ""monument of stupendous industry"" (DNB), Anderson's scope is global and yet specific, devoting a considerable portion to British colonial interests and offering a ""most accurate account of the South Sea Company and the very extraordinary actions of the year 1720"" when the Bubble burst (Sabin 1382). Within this impressive two-volume work are extensive references to treaties, parliamentary acts, the substantive contributions of economic texts, and thorough statistical accounts of currency, population and wealth. With large folding hemispheric map of the world and two other maps. Sabin 1382. Goldsmith 9939. Kress 6154. Palgrave I:39. Rare English Books on Banking 13. Infrequent scattered foxing, a bit of very minor marginal dampstaining to Volume II, marginal wormholing to Volume II appendix only, expert restoration to contemporary calf boards.
