        Contes et nouvelles.

A Amsterdam 1764 - - A Amsterdam, S.n. _1764, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 8 (12,5x20,5cm), relié. - Edition originale. A Concert [Pl. 7]

London: Published by John Boydell, 1764. Engraving, printed on laid paper. Excellent condition. 16 7/8 x 20 7/8 inches. 19 1/4 x 25 1/2 inches. A beautifully rendered print thought to have been after a painting by Caravaggio in the Duke of Devonshire's collection. This plate is from John Boydell's "Collection of Prints, Engraved from the most Capital Paintings in England." An ambitious and voluminous work, Collection of Prints helped establish Boydell's position as one of the leading London publishers of his time. It was comprised of plates engraved by artists including Chambars, Francis Ravenet, Anthony Walker, and William Woollett after Old Master paintings in various important English collections. Although primarily sold by subscription (prestigious subscribers included the King and the Princess Dowager), individual prints were available at higher prices. The first of the publication's nine volumes was issued in 1769. One of the most influential figures in the history of English printmaking, John Boydell was instrumental in re-establishing England's flagging reputation as a creative nucleus of printmaking. He was not only an accomplished engraver and an industrious publisher, but also a print seller who came to dominate the English print trade. He is probably best known as the originator of the Shakespeare Gallery, which made him one of the most successful print-sellers of his time. Trained in Dublin and Paris, the Irish engraver Thomas Chambars (c. 1724 - 1789 (?)) was appointed an associate at the Royal Academy in 1770 and exhibited his works at the Society of Artists between 1761 and 1773. He contributed several plates for Boydell. This wonderful evocation of the joy of music (and wine) had been thought to be after a painting by Caravaggio. The painting, which is still at Chatsworth, is now attributed to Valentin de Boulogne (1594-1632), greatly influenced by Caravaggio, as nearly every European painter of the age was. It is thought to have been painted about 1616. Cf. Clayton, The English Print, pp. 177-180 & 115-116; cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, vol. 3, p. 452.

Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia

London: Printed for the author, 1764. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio: 15” x 21”. Contemporary calf boards with light scuffing and bumping. Beautiful respine to style preserving the original title label. Sixty-one engraved plates and maps including eight double-page plates and six folding. Very little foxing with wide uncut margins. Owner’s bookplate (Thomas Cubitt) on the inside cover; otherwise unmarked. A Very Good copy of this important work. Included in the list of Subscribers to this work are David Garrick (actor, playwright), David Hume (philosopher), Joshua Reynolds (painter), Horace Walpole (author, politician), James Adam (Robert’s brother) and William Adam (Robert’s cousin, historian) who wrote the introduction to this work. Robert Adam (1728-1792) was educated at the University of Edinburgh and later studied with and became friends with Piranesi in Italy. Their architectural ideas developed along similar clean, classical lines. Adam spent five weeks in Spalatro in July and August of 1757, accompanied by Clerisseau and two other draftsmen, making the drawings that are the basis of the present volume. Adam's original intention had been to go to Greece to produce a work to rival that of Stuart and Revett, but his decision to go to Spalatro (located in present-day Croatia where the town is now known as Split) instead, and to record the late Roman imperial palace there, offered particular opportunities for grand engravings in the manner of Piranesi. Publication of the book took some years, for production of the engravings was shared between a team of Italian engravers (Bartolozzi, Cunego, Santini, Zocchi) supervised in Venice by his brother James, and English engravers who produced the simpler elevations and ground plans. The result was a volume of very considerable distinction which advertised Adam's taste and professional abilities, as well as showing that Roman architecture could be as impressive as the best Greek buildings portrayed by Stuart and Revett. Robert and James Adam have long been credited with giving birth to the eighteenth century neo classical movement that changed the face of architecture in Britain.         The Elements of Navigation; containing the Theory and Practice

London,: J. Nourse, 1764.. Two volumes, large octavo, 11 folding plates and five folding maps (two celestial), many diagrams, engraved headpieces; an attractive set in contemporary sprinkled calf, hinges worn but strong; spines numbered but unlettered. A fine set of the rare second edition of the standard textbook on navigation for the eighteenth-century British navy. First published in 1754, Robertson's Elements of Navigation was considered important enough that it was updated and republished every decade or so, meaning that it was used and studied by everyone from Carteret to Matthew Flinders, and undoubtedly by Cook as well. Notably the fourth edition of 1780 was revised by William Wales, astronomer and member of Captain Cook's second voyage.Robertson had a long and important career, and was involved in many practical and theoretical developments in navigation and mapping. In 1747 he was appointed assistant to James Hodgson at the Royal Mathematical School at Christ's Hospital in the City of London, and two decades later was appointed clerk and librarian to the Royal Society. He was also involved in trialling Harrison's chronometers. Most of the engravings are by the famous London engraver Thomas Jefferys, who produced many important 18th-century maps. Attractively, in a standard naval reference work of its daThe double-globe map of the world is by Basire, perhaps better known for his portrait of Captain Cook. Basire's map shows tropical currents and winds, and depicts Terra Australis/New Holland in the years before Cook's first voyage. (Torres Strait is not shown, as it was not known in the English tradition until 1769). This edition was improved by the addition of an excellent dissertation on the rise and progress of modern navigation by Dr James Wilson.Perhaps attesting to this particular edition's use and importance, this is a surprisingly scarce work: when Helen Wallis edited the journals of Carteret she had to resort to using the later third edition, rather than the second which actually travelled with Carteret, as the second 'is rare and no copy is in the national collections in Great Britain' (Helen Wallis, Carteret's Voyage, vol. I, p. 144). A copy of this edition is now listed at Cambridge.

Handmaid to the Arts ... The Second Edition, with considerable Additions and Improvements

London: printed for J. Nourse, 1764. 2 volumes, 8vo. (8 x 5 inches). Contemporary tree calf, skilfully rebacked to style, the flat spines divided into six compartments by gilt roll tools, red morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, red circular morocco label bearing the volume number in the fourth compartment. The second enlarged edition of this valuable work. This work was first published in 1758, and it contains information on all aspects painting, engraving, colouring of prints, transfer of prints onto glass, colouring of glass, etching of glass, Japanning, lacquering, papier mache, marbling paper, etc. A fascinating compendium. Robert Dossie (1717-1777) was an apothecary, but his interests were very wide ranging and spanned the gulf between the Sciences and the Arts. His training and his knowledge of chemistry allowed him to understand the science behind many of the processes used by artists, artisans and manufacturers of the day, and his wish was to explain and improve on the results that were achieved. He strove for this in his publications, including the present work, and the same motivation led him to help fund the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in 1754. His works were appreciated during his lifetime, were translated into various languages and contain information that remains valuable today.

L'ouvrage est composé comme suit : I. - De Causis in genere - De Scorbuto - De Diarrhoea - De Morbis in Portubus - De Febre Humorali - De Febre Critica - De Morbis in Portubus (2) - De Sanitatem Conservandi modo II.         An Account of Travels Into the Interior of Southern Africa In the Years 1797 and 1798

Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) was born the son of Roger Barrow in the village of Dragley Beck, in the parish of Ulverston (then in Lancashire, now in Cumbria). He started in life as superintending clerk of an iron foundry at Liverpool and afterwards, in his twenties, taught mathematics at a private school in Greenwich. In 1797 he accompanied Lord Macartney, as private secretary in Maccartney's delicate mission to settle the government of the newly acquired colony of the Cape of Good Hope. Barrow was entrusted with the task of reconciling the Boer settlers and the native Black population and of reporting on the country in the interior. On his return from his journey, in the course of which he visited all parts of the colony, he was appointed auditor-general of public accounts. He now decided to settle in South Africa, married Anne Maria Trüter, and in 1800 bought a house in Cape Town. But the surrender of the colony at the peace of Amiens (1802) upset this plan. He returned to England in 1804, was appointed Second Secretary to the Admiralty by Viscount Melville, a post which he held for forty years. During his travels through South Africa, Barrow compiled copious notes and sketches of the countryside he was traversing. In his position at the Admiralty, Barrow was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of discovery, including those of John Ross, William Edward Parry, James Clark Ross, and John Franklin. The Barrow Strait in the Canadian Arctic as well as Point Barrow and the city of Barrow in Alaska are named after him. He is reputed to have been the initial proposer of St Helena as the new place of exile for Napoleon Bonaparte following the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Barrow was a fellow of the Royal Society, and in 1821 received the degree of LL.D from the University of Edinburgh. A baronetcy was conferred on him by Sir Robert Peel in 1835. He was also a member of the Raleigh Club, a forerunner of the Royal Geographical Society. He retired from public life in 1845 and devoted himself to writing a history of the modern Arctic voyages of discovery (1846), as well as his autobiography, published in 1847. He died suddenly on 23 November 1848. Here are two volumes from 1801 and 1804, both first editions, professionally rebacked to expertly marry the original calf boards to an extensively gilt and tooled brown leather spine with red title label.  The condition of the binding is now fine.  The contents are very good indeed.  All the signature maps and fold-out illustrations of this edition are present, several hand-colored.  Minor spotting is intermittent, but mostly confined to the early leaves of Volume I.  The Volume I folding map has been professionally reinforced.

Tagli a spruzzo azzurri. Fregi tipogr. ai frontespizi. Fregi tipogr. n.t. Cfr. Fondo Olschki, V, 1081 (ed. del 1755 e del 1771-73). Graesse, VII, 257. Wellcome, II, p. 192.

Volgens eigen ondervinding beschreeven ... Kleemann. Uit den echten Hoogduitschen Druk ... vertaald. Haarlem en Amsterdam, C.H. Bohn en H. de Wit, (1764-1768). 4 volumes (bound in 8). Large-4to (278 x 220mm). With 3 handcoloured engraved frontispieces, 1 engraved portrait of Rösel and 359 (3 folded) handcoloured engraved plates (printed on 288 leaves). Contemporary half calf, richly gilt ornamented spines, with red and green gilt lettered labels (skilful repair to top of spines). Nissen ZBI, 3467; Landwehr 161. A fine uncut uniformly bound copy of one of the most beautiful entomological publications. This Dutch edition is more attractive than the original German edition, which was published in Nuremberg from 1746-1792. The Dutch edition is printed on almost twice as large, much thicker, paper, and has far better colouring. The translation was made by C. Kleemann, the son-in-law of the author. He added new material and the excellent colouring of the plates is by him and his wife Katharina Barbara Roesel von Rosenhof. Kleemann also published a "Vervolg" with 26 plates, which was never finished and which is not present as almost always. "Roesel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After living in Copenhagen from 1726 to 1728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there, besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation, and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleeman tells us. His manuscripts, with 406 illustrations, are now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. Roesel also made the engravings of his drawings ..." (Nissen, Bestiaries).

Nürnberg, A.L. Wirsing, 1764. Folio (420 x 265mm). pp. 48, with engraved handcoloured title with rococo border and 12 engraved handcoloured plates [together with:] 12 superbly handcoloured engraved plates on South African plants. Contemporary pink board (spine rebacked). The Jean-Baptiste Huzard copy of this finely illustrated work on microscopical plant research. The elaborately handcoloured plates are after drawings by the author and engraved by A.L. Wirsing, a precise artist who did engravings for several natural history works including C.J. Trew's "Hortus nitidissimus". (Rautenberg, 'Beitr. alter Naturwiss. Werke', V). "Ledermüller shows a discerning interest in the art and science of botany, and in the newer science of microscopy which made it possible to study the characteristics of plants; and it was he who prepared the good drawings and the text for the book" (Hunt 581). The plates show a.o. the Iris, the Rose, and the Ranunculus. The text is in German and French. Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-69) was a German physician and keeper of the natural history collection of the Margrave of Brandenburg-Colmbach. The twelve added plates are of a high quality, 4 show Aloes (Aloë linguiformis, Aloë disticha variegata, Aloë Margariti fera, Aloë Abissinica,), 4 Mesembryanthemums (Mesembryanthemum tuberosum, Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum, Mesembryanthemum cordifolium, Mesembryanthernum globuleformis), as well as the following: Ornithogalum longibracleatum, Sedum anacampseros, Crassula pellucida, Cactus tuna flavicans. The plates are after drawings by Fossier and probably from one of Buchoz's botanical works. Provenance: Huzard's stamp on verso of title. J.B. Huzard put together one of the largest natural history libaries of his time, containing some 40,000 books. Nissen BBI, 1160; Hunt 581.

Dimensioni 2160x505. Magnificent view of the city from Posillipo, depicting the whole coast at Chiaia. Together with the view from the sea, this map is part of a tween set of prints engraved by Sclopis with dedication to the viscountess of Spencer, and that is the reason why they are called with her surname. The Spencer?s, maybe the most important views for size and details, have been realized on three plates each, with a slight difference on the size. The view of Chiaia is particularly interesting for it depicts a part of the city that has changed a lot nowadays, with the alternation of different fachades, typical characteristic of stratified housing. The view has been decorated with contemporary scenes and two cartouches on the sides, containing 66 references, among which the eruption of the Vesuvio. Copperplate, signs of light blue on the sea, corners perfectlly repaired, in good condition considering the big size. Nug frame of late XVIII century.       [Nuremberg], Christian de Launoy seel. Erben, 1764 [recte: 1763-66]. Folio. Contemporary half calf with gilt lines to spine. Corners a bit bumped. In magnificent, completely clean and fresh condition. (6), 8, (4), 72, 40, (8), 26 ff. + 51 magnificent engraved plates - all plates in astonishing, contemporary hand-colouring. Plates numbered as thus: 1-5 + 2b (i.e. 6 plates - depiting the microscope), I-XXX + A-E (i.e. 35 - details of floral structure and pollens), Anhang 1-10 (i.e. 10 - mainly insects). The plates are engraved by (and coloured by/under the auspices of) Christoph Keller after drawings by Gleichen-Russworm. With several beautiful, large engraved vignettes (by Johann Michael Stock, efter Keller).. The scarce first edition of this splendid work, in which the outstanding microscopist Baron Gleichen-Russworm recorded his observations of plants and insects. The 51 astonishingly beautiful hand-coloured copperplates show the morphology of plants and insects in great detail as well as his magnificent specially constructed microscope and its different parts, making it of the utmost importance to the history of the microscope as well as the fertilization processes in plants. With his thorough study of the pollen, stamens, and pistils as well as the process connected with them, magnificently presented in great detail on beautifully produced plates, the work became a great source of inspiration for many biologists and microscopists of the 18th century. The microscope described and depicted here was frequently reproduced from the detailed plates and Gleichen-Russworm's experiments widely repeated in order to investigate the true nature of the plant. The plates depicting the microscope are among the most frequently reproduced depictions of microscopes. The work appeared in three fascicles, between 1763 and 1766 and were issued with a title-page stating 1764. Wilhelm Friedrich von Gleichen, known as Russworm (1717 - 1783) belongs to the outstanding microscopists of the eighteenth century. He was the elder son of Heinrich von Gleichen and Caroline von Russworm. "He received little formal education and in 1734, after some years as a page at the court of Prince Thurn und Taxis in Frankfurt, he decided to make his career in the forces of the margrave of Bayreuth. [...]. Gleichen-Russworm remained in the army until 1756, when he resigned his commission in order to devote himself to the management of the Greifenstein estates, inherited from his mother in 1748. His first published writings appeared after his departure from Bayreuth, in the periodical "Fränkische Sammlung aus der Naturlehre, Arzneigelahrtheit, Ökonomie und der damit verbundenen Wissenschaften"; they deal, inter alia, with natural history, physics, and chemistry but are, for the most part, quite fanciful.[...] In the summer of 1760 Gleichen-Russworm made the acquaintance of Martin Ledermüller, who had already begun publication of his "Mikroskopische Gemüths- und Augenergötzungen" (1759-1762); it was this work which led Gleichen-Russworm to concentrate on microscopy. Ledermüller visited Schloss Greifenstein in 1762, and Gleichen-Russworm continued to benefit from his advice until the former took offense at certain criticisms of his work which appeared in "Geschichte der gemeinen Stubenfliege" (1764).Gleichen-Russworm was particularly interested in the processes of fertilization in plants and animals, and in 1763 he published the first fascicle of Das neueste aus dem Reiche der Pflanzen. This work contains fifty-one colored plates illustrating numerous details of floral structure and various pollens; in addition, his interest in the construction of the microscope is reflected in the six plates devoted to the different modifications and accessories which he designed for the instrument. His account of the pollen of Asclepias syriaca L. in Auserlesene mikroskopische Entdeckungen (1777-1781) contains what appears to be the first observation of a pollen tube, although he remained unaware of its significance." (D.S.B.). Nissen BBI: 716. Pritzel: 3367 (merely stating 46 plates). Honeyman: 1515. Wellcome: III:125 (merely having an incomplete copy of the French translation)

Sthlm, L. Salvius, 1764. 8:o. Soulsby Catalogue of the works of Linnæus 1095a. &c. &c. in quo animalia rariora imprimis & exotica: aves, amphibia, pisces describuntur. Tomi secundi prodrumus."

The Residual Analysis; A New Branch of the Algebraic Art, Of very extensive Use, both in Pure Mathematics, and Natural Philosophy. Book I [all published]

London: Printed for the Author; and sold by L. Hawes…[et al.], 1764 First edition. Recent tan calf over marbled boards, Gilt-ruled spine with crimson morocco label. . Quarto. Five engraved folding plates. With list of subscribers. A little light foxing. A very good copy of a scarce book. John Landen (1719-1790) was the most notable British mathematician in the second half of the eighteenth century. At the time when British mathematics was held back by inadequate notation, an unfortunate consequence of the Newton-Leibniz dispute, he was the only Englishman to score major advances in mathematics and in the art of computation. In this, his most important work, he attempted to replace the fluxional calculus with an analytic method "founded entirely on the anciently received principles of algebra." A second volume was planned, but it never appeared. According to Lacroix, this was the first attempt to reduce the infinitesimal calculus to "purely mathematical notions" (Oxford DNB). Landen's writings served as the starting point for investigations by Euler, Lagrange, and Legendre. He also developed the theorem known by his name for expressing the length of a hyperbolic arc in terms of the lengths of arcs in two ellipses.
