München, In Commission bey E. A. Fleischmann, 1826. 4to. (25,5 x 20,8 cm). 72 S. Neuer Leinwandband.

. . Einzige Ausgabe (gedruckt in 800 Exemplaren). S. 300. - Engelmann S. 20. - Preuß/Preuß: Lex. Eisenbahn S. 24f. - Ottley 265 ("Railway experiments in England discussed, including Palmer's Suspension Railway."). - Röll² I, S. 344. - Matschoss S. 10. - Hoeltzel S. 49. - Gering stockfleckig.

1764. Nuremberg, Adam Wolfgang Winterschmidt, 1764-1768. 3 volumes. 4to (265 x 215mm). With 1 fine handcoloured allegorical frontispiece and 150 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Later half vellum. The rare French edition of probably the most beautifully illustrated work on microscopical research. Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-1769) settled down in Nuremberg in 1749, after having been wandering about for many years as a soldier and a secretary, and started his valuable microscopical observations under the protection and direction of the famous Dr. C.J. Trew. The publication of the results, with the finely engraved and coloured plates by the successful Adam Wolfgang Winterschmidt, met with close attention and interest, and for years to come the "Mikroskopieren" was a fashionable pastime for many of the well-to-do classes. The work describes and illustrates a wide range of objects: parts of plants and insects, small shells, plancton, the crystallization of salts in solution etc. The author was the first to use the term 'infusoria'. A fine uncut copy. Graesse IV, 139; Brunet III, 919: "Ouvrage tres estime"; Nissen BBI, 1156..

Signed Manuscript Letter Reporting on Matters of Slavery, Insurrection, and Governance in the Dutch Colony of Berbice, now Part of Guyana, South America

London: , 1764. London, 1764. ALS written by a prominent American plantation owner in the Dutch Colony of Berbice, to Dutch nobility, discloses paramount concerns regarding the leadership and economic progress of the slave-dependent colony. The author, slave trader and plantation owner Gedney Clarke (Jr.) who was also affiliated with the Dutch West India Company, addresses nobleman and politician Count de Bentinck of Holland, and mentions other key administrators of this and neighbouring Dutch plantation colonies. 8vo. 4 pages on two single-leafs, laid watermarked paper measuring approximately 7 x 9 inches. Very good, original condition document with significant content. The letter is contemporary to the Berbice Slave Uprising, a major event in Guyana's anti-colonial struggles, which began on 23 February 1763, and continued for almost a full year into 1764. On that February day, Plantation Magdalenenberg on the Canje River in Berbice experienced a rebellion by their slaves in protest of harsh and inhumane treatment. They torched the plantation house, then went to other plantations to mobilize other enslaved Africans to join the rebellion. Cuffy, a house slave at Lilienburg, another plantation on Canje, is said to have organized them into a military unit. As plantation after plantation fell to the slaves, the Dutch settlers fled northward and the rebels began to take over control of the region. For almost a year, the rebels held on to southern Berbice, while the whites were able to hold on to the north. Eventually only about half of the white population that had lived in the colony remained. Superb and early manuscript correspondence from Guayana 1764, written by an influential slave owner and trader of American descent, reveals the death of a Dutch colony's governor, suggests scandalous behaviours of others whom are named, presents allegedly sage and prudent advice for appointing new leaders encourages the involvement the Dutch West India Company, and boasts of a purchase of ninety female slaves. It further serves to illustrate the consanguinity of pioneer settlements abroad. A document of excellent content, dating to an era of slave uprisings and the dawn of an annexation of the Dutch colony by the British, key administrators and delegates, foremost settlers, planters and slavers, mentioned or described herein include the following: - Laurens Storm van's Gravesande (Governor of Guiana, Directeur-General of colonies Essequibo and Demerara, Administrator and Commander for the West India Company) - Honorable Laurens Lodewyk van Bercheyck (Land surveyor and Commander of Demerara) - Victor Amadeus Heyliger (first Marshal of the Demerara Colony, later Acting President of the colony and of the Court of Justice).. Signed.

Uniformly bound in contemporary plain paper wrappers, frayed, brown paper spines, one with remnants of old paper strengthening; dog eared, bit soiled in places. Still a charming, unsophisticated set, preserved in the original state. ~ First edition. Exceedingly scarce in the original state. A series of fictitious letters written by the orientalist Belin de Monterzi. Monterzi's book, his claims to historical veracity notwithstanding, was fiction disguised as history. It was an epistolary exchange between Byzantine princesses, the Sultan, and his officers. Hardened warriors though they were, in Monterzi's portraits they had a tender heart for the nobel Byzantine ladies, who did not resist their gallantries. One of them was Irene, the only surviving member of an illustrious Byzantine family. When Constantinople fell, some of its most highly prized spoils were its maidens, valued for their beauty and nobility. And so she was presented to the Sultan, who became deeply enamoured of her. In her tragic story there are themes of beauty, desire, and violence placed in an early oriental setting. (Buturovic, Women in the Ottoman Balkans: Gender, Culture and History). Contemporary half calf, richly gilt ornamented spines, with red and green gilt lettered labels (skilful repair to top of spines). Nissen ZBI, 3467; Landwehr 161. A fine uncut uniformly bound copy of one of the most beautiful entomological publications. This Dutch edition is more attractive than the original German edition, which was published in Nuremberg from 1746-1792. The Dutch edition is printed on almost twice as large, much thicker, paper, and has far better colouring. The translation was made by C. Kleemann, the son-in-law of the author. He added new material and the excellent colouring of the plates is by him and his wife Katharina Barbara Roesel von Rosenhof. Kleemann also published a "Vervolg" with 26 plates, which was never finished and which is not present as almost always. "Roesel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After living in Copenhagen from 1726 to 1728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there, besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation, and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleeman tells us. His manuscripts, with 406 illustrations, are now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. Roesel also made the engravings of his drawings ..." (Nissen, Bestiaries)..

Paris: Chez A.M. THE ORIGIN AND PROGRESS OF DESPOTISM: IN THE ORIENTAL, AND OTHER EMPIRES, OF AFRICA, EUROPE, AND AMERICA

Amsterdam [i.e., London], 1764. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH . Hardcover. 184 x 117 mm (7 1/4 x 4 5/8"). 1 p.l. (title), 285 pp. (BB and BB2 bound in reverse order.) Translated by John Wilkes. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Excellent contemporary crimson morocco, covers with gilt rule border, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral spray centerpiece and foliate cornerpieces, green morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Sabin 6885; Minuti, Rolando. "Oriental Despotism." European History Online (EGO), published by the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG), Mainz 2012-05-03. URL: http://www.ieg-ego.eu/minutir-2012-en. Joints and top of spine slightly rubbed (and carefully refurbished), occasional faint browning, half a dozen pages of text with rather light printing (but still entirely legible), one opening with offsetting from ribbon bookmark, but A VERY APPEALING COPY, the unsophisticated decorative binding bright and solid, with no serious wear, and the text fresh and clean throughout. This is a pretty copy of the first appearance in English of an Enlightenment-era examination of the roots of despotism, a work that denounces religion and theocracy as key elements in tyrannical rule. As stated on the title page and in the text, "this theologico-political [work] is calculated for an introduction and key to Montesquieu's 'Spirit of laws,'" a treatise primarily concerned with the separation of powers. However, Boulanger and Montesquieu disagreed on a key point. Montesquieu saw religion, specifically Islam, as the potential ally of a despot, but he considered it an overall stabilizing force in society. Boulanger, on the other hand, saw little or no redeeming social value in religious institutions, and strongly emphasized the link between religion and despotism. As Rolando Minuti observed in "Oriental Despotism," "Boulanger did not define religion as socially useful but as the anthropological source of a fundamental mystification that creates power. Its political consequence, reinforced by superstition and idolatry, would then be despotism." Boulanger (1722-59) was a road and bridge engineer with a keen interest in philosophy, particularly in the area of politics and human rights. He wrote several articles on the rights of man for Diderot's "Encyclopedia," and several books critical of religion, all of which were published posthumously. The first edition of the present work, in French, appeared in Geneva in 1761; English politician John Wilkes (1725-97) privately printed another French edition in London in 1763, and is believed to have prepared this translation. While one can find copies of the 1764 English edition, they almost never show up in pleasing contemporary bindings, as here.

Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
