(South Africa) De la Caille, M. l'Abbé [Nicolas Louis]
Paris: Ches Guillyn, 1763. First edition. 3 figures and a folding map. xxxvi, 380 pp. 1 vols. 16mo. Nicolas Louis De La Caille (1713-62), an eminent French mathematician and astronomer, arrived at the Cape of Good Hope on March 30, 1751 and began a study of the parallax of the moon. In this diary, he gives descriptions of Rio Janeiro, the Cape, Bourbon, and Ascension. De La Caille's account of the Hottentot and other customs and societies dissented from and superseded Kolbe's narrative, although he made almost as great errors as his predecessor. However, after the publication of this journal by De La Caille, Kolbe was no longer considered a standard author on the topic. (See Theal, History of South Africa, 1691-1795). Mendelssohn I, p. 434; for de la Caille: Dictionary of Scientific Biography, VII, pp. 542-545. Quarter modern vellum, gilt spine, uncut. Fine.

PATUZZI Joanne Vincentio & VINCENTIO
ex typographia Remondiniana 1763 - - ex typographia Remondiniana, Venetiis (Venise) 1763, in 4 (25,2x19cm), XXII. 1f. 232pp., Un Vol. relié. - Edition Originale. XXII. 1f. 232pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BROOKES (R).:
J. Newbery, at the Bible and Sun, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1763. 12mo., First Edition, on laid paper, with 24 fine copper-engraved plates, title very lightly age-browned at margins, signature erased leaving small hole at upper margin of 'Contents' leaf; contemporary calf, sides with double gilt frame border, neatly rebacked in calf to style, leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, speckled fore-edges, a very good, crisp, clean copy. Part I: Of Foreign Vegetables, and their Roots, Barks, Woods, Leaves, Flowers, Fruits, Seeds, Resins, Gums, and Concreted Juices; Part II: Of indigenous Herbs, Plants, Shrubs and Trees, and their Uses in Medicine. This important work, complete in itself, forms the sixth and final volume of Brookes' 'New and Accurate System of Natural History', a comprehensive encyclopaedia of natural history similar to, but quite independent of, Buffon. The plates are detailed and quite charming; the descriptions are surprisingly broad and must appeal to the cook as well as the apothecary. A second edition, with slight corrections and an appendix containing observations on hot-beds and the watering of plants (but adding no plates) appeared in 1772. Very scarce, especially in this condition. Freeman 505; Henrey 516. . Catalogs: sports & pastimes: cookery & gastronomy.

"It has always been deemed a book of authority ; and Blackstone, in his Commentaries, mentions it as one of the very few publications on the subject of Ecclesiastical Law on which the reader can rely with certainty. Burn, by his diligent and accurate research, and by great judgment in the selection and use of his materials, laid the foundation of a work which subsequent editors have reared to a complete and full Treatise upon English Ecclesiastical Law. BELLIN, Jacques Nicolas (1703-72)
Paris: J.N. Bellin, 1763. Copper-engraved map, in excellent condition, stamped on upper-center with the stamp of the French royal maritime printing office: "De l'Imp. de Dep. de la Mar. à Versail". 24 1/8 x 32 1/2 inches. A very elegant and detailed map of St. Lucia by one of the greatest French cartographers This very fine map of St. Lucia surrounds the island in seas traversed by rhumb lines. The rugged topography of this, one of the most scenic islands of the Caribbean, is captured in great detail. Oriented with the east towards the top of the map, the island features two broad ranges of mountains, which were formed by extreme tectonic activity. In the centre of the island is a plain that features a road, "Chemin de la Longue Chasse ou de la Soufriere" that runs the length of the island. In the lower left of the map is the "Pointe du Gros Piton", the distinctive mountain formation that cascades into the sea, and that is today St. Lucia's most celebrated site. The various aspects of the coast are labelled in great detail, and many places near the sea are dotted with the cultivated fields of sugarcane and banana plantations. Three cartographic insets adorn the upper portions of the map, each depicting one of the island's best harbours. Intended for practical use by mariners, each harbour is heavily detailed with depth soundings and notations of hazards. The insets are "Plan du Port du Carenage" (site of St. Lucia's modern capital of Castries), "Plan du Cul de Sac Des Roseaux" and "Mouilliages du Grande Islet et du Choc". The map is embellished with a very f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chiari Pietro
presso Filiberto Carmignani, 1763. Reimprimatur finale. Dedica a stampa "all'eruditissimo Midonte Priamideo Milanese Pastor Arcade di Roma", pseudonimo che cela l'identità di Pietro Verri (v. Lancetti, p. 181). Fioriture. Buon esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]

[EMERSON, William, 1701-1782]
London: Printed for J. Nourse, Bookseller in Ordinary to his Majesty, 1763. First Edition. First Edition. 8vo; viii,183, [1]; iv,32 pp, with 296 geometrical figures and perspective designs on 14 folding engraved plates. Prefaces to both titles signed: W. Emerson. Both First Editions of elementary works on geometry and perspective, the first divided into eight books. Both works start with definitions, axioms, and postulates, followed by numerous problems (keyed into the 296 figures, in the case of the first book) and their solutions. ESTC Citation Nos. T77181 and T77180. Like his fellow County Durham savant John Bird, the astronomer and instrument designer, Emerson makes a fictional appearance in Thomas Pynchon's 'Mason and Dixon.' He was the very archetype of the English eccentric: According to onAge of Enlightenmente account, Emerson dressed in old clothes and his manners were uncouth. He wore his shirt back to front and his legs wrapped in sacking so as not to scorch them as he sat over the fire. He complained about the expense of all the candles he had used during a lifetime studying mathematics, mechanics (he apparently never advanced … [Click Below for Full Description]
