[L-A. CARACCIOLI]
Bassompierre, Liege, 1763. 8vo., on laid paper, with decorative title, small neat contemporary signature on half-title, some negligible marginal age-staining on a few leaves; contemporary full speckled calf, back with five raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments framed and tooled in gilt to a floral design, marbled endpapers, red edges, upper hinge cracked (but binding entirely sound), two small worm-holes at tail of backstrip, a crisp, clean copy. Complete with half-title; wanting one blank preliminary.Louis-Antoine Caraccioli (1723-1803) was a prolific writer of poetry, history, fiction and biography. Born in Paris, he served as colonel to Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, and so travelled widely throughout Europe. Despite close ties to both Louis XV and Louis XVI he managed to survive the Revolution, though eventually he died in penury. The broad thematic range of his works makes him interesting to scholars of manners and many other subjects. He is best known among bibliophiles for two publications printed with coloured inks: Le livre de quatre couleurs (1757) and Le livre à la mode (1759) But the full list of his works is much longer ('trop fécond' complains the ungenerous Nouvelle Biographie Générale), and many of them are of interest. The present work was first published in Paris by Nyon earlier in the same year. It remained popular throughout the eighteenth century and was translated into English as 'The Language of Reason' in 1802. This edition, the first non-French issue, is scarce … [Click Below for Full Description]

[La Court van der Voort, Pieter de]
Amsterdam, K. v. Tongerlo & F. Houttuin, 1763, 2. edition, pp. [i, ii*], xvi, 522, (18), 1 text-illustration and 15 folding (except 1) engraved plates, 4to (203 x 255 mm), plain half calf with sprinkled boards (neatly rebacked, preserving original backstrip). Fine unpressed copy.Note: "Pieter de la Court van der Voort [1664-1739], a cloth merchant at Leiden discusses in this book theoretical aspects of garden design. He published the book very late in his career, but practised his ideas certainly before 1700 at his estate 'Allemansgeest' (todays 'Berbice') at Voorschoten near Leiden. His father Pieter de la Court (1618-1685) was an influential politician who also had a taste for gardening. Besides a theoretical treatise De la Court also gives much practical information on gardening. He discusses amply the cultivation of the pineapple, one of his favourite subjects. He grew these plants in quantities and kept them during the winter in a heated glasshouse and in summer in the 'tan frame'. ... It is sometimes believed that Pieter de la Court sr. popularized pineapple growing in his day. This seems most unlikely as by the time of his death in 1685, the necessary facilities were hardly available, and the production of only a single fruit was nothing short of a miracle ..." (Wijnands). "The book of Pieter de la Court published after 50 years of experience in 1737, has a very long title, though with its accurate descriptions of the construction of greenhouses as well as the cultivation of pineapples, it seems to me to be one of the most important books of the 18th century concern … [Click Below for Full Description]

(AUCTION CATALOGUE: JESUIT: MAISON PROFESSE, PARIS)
1763. xx (i.e. xxiv), [2], 448, 59 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled calf, spine nicely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Pissot & Gogue, 1763. An important sale catalogue of the library of the Maison Professe des Jesuites of Paris, founded in 1580. This library was comprised of many donations, the most notable being that of Pierre Daniel Huet (1630-1721), bishop of Avranches and scholar. Huet, whose scholarship was very well-known, made considerable scientific researches as well as classical studies; he edited the famous Delphin series of the Latin classics in about sixty volumes. Huet formed a great library of books and MSS. which he donated to this Jesuit house upon his death. When the Jesuits were expelled from France in 1762, the entire library of the house was offered for sale by auction. However, Huet's books were withdrawn before the sale due to the terms of his donation and were given by his heir to the Royal Library in 1765. This was one of the best and most complete Jesuit libraries in France. It numbered 30,000 volumes in 1754 (this sale catalogue has 7252 lots). It must be noted that this catalogue gives us the best idea of the contents of Huet's rich collection. Fine and handsome copy. This copy is unusually complete: it has the two unnumbered pages following the preliminary leaves ("Livres en Feuilles") and the 59-page author index. Another six leaves, which are not present in most copies, listing the withdrawn books, is not found in this copy. ❧ Franklin, Les Anciennes Bibliothèques de Paris, pp. 269-77-"une collection t … [Click Below for Full Description]

FENNING, D[aniel]
London: R. Baldwin, J. Richardson [et al.], 1763. Second edition improved, 8vo, viii, 16, plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; with the approbation leaf, in which George III (to whom the book is dedicated) grants Fenning a license to print his dictionary for a period of 14 years. Occasional dampstaining, extremities neatly repaired, edges lightly rubbed and scuffed, overall a very good, sound copy in contemporary full calf with raised bands and red morocco label lettered in gilt on spine. Little is known of Fenning. He was a compiler of several school texts, including an arithmetic, a geography, and a speller, the last of which had notable popularity in America before Webster. Webster himself was no doubt well acquainted with Fenning's speller, which in London made a 71st edition in 1823. This dictionary contains terms used in mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, architecture, printing, natural history and navigation, with "each word followed by an initial letter to denote the part of speech" --the first time I believe in a dictionary. A competent, trustworthy dictionary on "so extensive a plan as to unite the different excellencies of all other English dictionaries." Alston V, 288; Kennedy 6259.

PLATO [H. Spens, translator.]
Glasgow Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1763. First edition, with scarce publisher's advertisement leaf at end, small 4to., [4], [v], vi-xl, [1)-430, [2 ad] pp., contemporary polished calf, red morocco lettering piece, contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper (see note), foxing to endpapers, a few light spots to title, faint and shallow corner creases pages 1 & 3, light soiling to upper edge of page 4, binding with short professional repair to upper hinge, rubbed, corners bumped and usual age patina otherwise exceptionally good conditon throughout. This first published English translation of The Republic. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the Republic has been Plato's most famous and widely read dialogue. As in most other Platonic dialogues the main character is Socrates. It is generally accepted that the Republic belongs to the dialogues of Plato's middle period. In Plato's early dialogues, Socrates refutes the accounts of his interlocutors and the discussion ends with no satisfactory answer to the matter investigated. In the Republic however, we encounter Socrates developing a position on justice and its relation to eudaimonia (happiness). He provides a long and complicated, but unified argument, in defense of the just life and its necessary connection to the happy life. This edition was translated by Harry Spens, who was the minister of the parish of Wemyss in Fife. Robert and Andrew Foulis gained international renown as publishers for their editions of the Greek and Latin classics. The contemporary ink inscription reads: 'This translation is executed with great fid … [Click Below for Full Description]
