[Click Below for Full Description]

(BARBAZZA FRANCESCO).
Roma, 1763. Edition-originale.com - [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition, and probably the first in-4 that brings together three stories published between 1760 and 1765.Traduction Ms. Belot, des … [Click Below for Full Description]

Second edition, published the same year as the original, and like this one at the address of Amsterdam alone.Binding in full veal blond marbled. Smooth back decorated. Title piece in red morocco. Worn head cap. Split upper bit at the top. A blunt corner. Friction. It is undoubtedly the best work of Mably (1709-1785), historian, moral and political philosopher, who was later considered one of the first communist theorists. Presenting itself as a translation of Greek and talks between Phocion, leader of Athens and Aristias, a young citizen. Mably develops the relationship between morality and politics at length and leads to the idea that private property is at the root of social injustice. He nonetheless recognizes the irreversible nature of the money, while deploring the concentration of money. Mably was, however, suspicious of any political system; his true belief was that of the man of nature as Rousseau explained it. His works reveal the proximity of his political thought to those of Condillac, Plato and Locke.Blue Buffer: Good Press Library. ART (on the false title and the title). S.n. The plate is of a greenhouse and is signed by De Poilly. Adanson, a pupil of Antoine and Bernard de Jussieu, provided the most extensive systematic approach to classification of plants in this seminal work. Unlike Linnaeus, Adanson did not apply a priori conditions for his classification. His empirical approach provided him with a better natural system of classification. Stafleu in his contribution to the bicentennial of Adanson's Familles(Hunt pub. 1973) states "When we compare Ananson's work with that of his contemporaries and especially with that of Carolus Linnaeus and of Bernard de Jussieu we shall find that the merits of the natural systems put forward by thes three men we of equal value, but that Adanson's contribution was the only one accompanied by a methodical treatment and by ample descriptions and discussions of the taxonomic units, mainly his families. S.n. 1763 - - S.n., A Amsterdam 1763, In-12 (10x16,5cm), xxxvj 238pp. A.R.T. (sur le faux-titre et le titre). MURATORI LUDOVICO ANTONIO
Cfr. Iccu. PLATO [H. Spens, translator.]
Glasgow Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1763. First edition, with scarce publisher's advertisement leaf at end, small 4to., [4], [v], vi-xl, [1)-430, [2 ad] pp., contemporary polished calf, red morocco lettering piece, contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper (see note), foxing to endpapers, a few light spots to title, faint and shallow corner creases pages 1 & 3, light soiling to upper edge of page 4, binding with short professional repair to upper hinge, rubbed, corners bumped and usual age patina otherwise exceptionally good conditon throughout. This first published English translation of The Republic. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the Republic has been Plato's most famous and widely read dialogue. As in most other Platonic dialogues the main character is Socrates. It is generally accepted that the Republic belongs to the dialogues of Plato's middle period. In Plato's early dialogues, Socrates refutes the accounts of his interlocutors and the discussion ends with no satisfactory answer to the matter investigated. In the Republic however, we encounter Socrates developing a position on justice and its relation to eudaimonia (happiness). He provides a long and complicated, but unified argument, in defense of the just life and its necessary connection to the happy life. This edition was translated by Harry Spens, who was the minister of the parish of Wemyss in Fife. Robert and Andrew Foulis gained international renown as publishers for their editions of the Greek and Latin classics. The contemporary ink inscription reads: 'This translation is executed with great fid … [Click Below for Full Description]
