The Art of Cookery, Made Plain and Easy

London: A. Millar, 1763. Eighth edition. Hardcover (rebound in cloth). Very Good Condition. Rebound in modern red cloth. Light foxing, finger soiling, a few mild creases internally, title page a little loose - a nice, clean copy overall. Facsimile signature of Glasse on page one. vi, (24), 384, (24)pp. Cagle 702, Vicaire 414. Eighth edition of perhaps the most influential of all English 18th century cookbooks. Though her advances were partly fictitious, and her cookbooks were heavily plagiarized from Eliza Smith and, especially, The Whole Duty of a Woman (1737), she was responsible for the first English curry recipe "To make a currey the Indian way" and an early recipe for raspberry ice cream, one of the earliest in an English cookbook, only predated by one in Bailey's Dictionarium Domesticum (1736). She also advanced the simplicity and economy of English cooking - even if sometimes just to run down French cooking techniques (e.g. her chapter devoted to ridiculing the extravagance of French sauces). Size: 8vo (octavo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Cooking, Wine & Dining; Inventory No: CAT000160.

        The Reign of George VI

London: for W. Nichol,, 1763. Duodecimo, pp. xxi, [1], 192; sig. A12 folded back to form initial blank. Contemporary mottled calf. Spine chipped at head and tail, joints cracked but held by cords, title leaf repaired at head with loss of first word "The", a few minor marks, a good copy. First edition of a scarce futuristic novel. "Uncanny in its choice of dates and in its prediction of the emergence of Russia and the United States as world powers, it describes a war between Britain and Russia (1900?-01) which escalates into a world war between the British Empire and a coalition of Russia and France (1917?-20) who between them have occupied much of Europe" (Howgego). The anonymous novel has sometimes been attributed to the Irish writer Samuel Madden, though only because that shares its futuristic concept with Madden's earlier work, Memoirs of the Twentieth Century (1733), and, as Howgego remarks, other than these two and Mercier's L'An 2440 (1771), "futuristic works of this character were virtually unknown to 18th-century readers". Although reasonably well-held institutionally, no copy of this title appears in auction records going back at least to 1975.

Gotha, J.C. Dieterich, 1763-64. 2 volumes (bound in one). 8vo. (8), 520, (14): (2), 318, (8), with engraved title vignette and 20 engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spine with gilt lettered label. Johann Wilhelm Baumer (1719-1788) was professor of medicine and physics at the Universities of Erfurt and Giessen. "General remarks on amber, copal, jet, p 28-34; marble, p. 185-8; nephrite, p 209-10; 'glass-like' stones include gemstones, p 221-59. Many text references to literature. While none of the information is remarkable, the organisation adopted by Baumer in an attempt to present his material in some systematic order is noteworthy. Thus he treats the materials of the earth as follows: underground fire agencies, including combustible and air, water agencies, salts, earths, stones, accidental forms of stones and petrifications, metals and ores, and mountains and large rock masses. (Second volume:) Supplementary material presented in the same order, ie, amber, p 25-7; jet, p 27-8; marble, p 117-20; and gemstones, etc p 142-62" (Sinkankas 481 & 482).//B.M.(N.H.)I, 113.

TRAITÉ DE PAIX ENTRE LE ROI, LE ROI D'ESPAGNE ET LE ROI DE LA GRANDE-BRETAGNE, CONLU A PARIS LE 10 FÉVRIER 1763. AVEC L'ACCESSION DU ROI DE PORTUGAL

Paris: Imprimerie Royal, 1763.. 56pp. Quarto. Contemporary red morocco, gilt, with gilt crest and floral gilt designs on spine. 19th century inscription on front flyleaf. Very minor foxing. A fine copy. The official French printing of the Treaty of Paris, the most important American Treaty of the 18th century except the treaty ending the American War of Independence. It closed the long conflict of the Seven Years' or French and Indian War, and marked the end of France as a power in North America, producing a major shift in the balance of power on the continent. The removal of France from the North American continent opened the door for the expansion of the British colonies over the Alleghenies and gave them a self- sufficient posture never before possible. The removal of the French counterweight opened the door for American Independence. By the terms of the treaty all of Canada except two small islands off Newfoundland was ceded to England, as were all French lands east of the Mississippi. All of Louisiana was ceded to Spain, and France's New World holdings were reduced to several Caribbean islands, including Martinique, Guadeloupe, and several smaller islands. At the same time, East and West Florida went from Spain to England, who also received the Grenadines and Dominica. A vital landmark in the political history of colonial North America, in its first edition and in contemporary French red morocco. HOWES D213, "aa." DAVENPORT 150. SABIN 19275. SERVIES 433.

[Autograph letter, signed, to Jean-Baptiste Massieu].[Paris], 9 Floréal An 3 [= 28 April 1795]. Small 8vo (17 x 11 cm). Signed autograph letter in dark brown ink on laid paper, with a list of printed books in and on the Malay language.

A letter written by Louis Mathieu Langlès (1763-1824), leading French orientalist (especially for the languages of India and the East Indies) and conservator of oriental manuscripts at the Bibliothèque Nationale (the former Bibliotheque Royale), to Jean-Baptiste Massieu (1743-1818), a former bishop and professor who had joined the Revolution and established the Temple de la Raison in Sedan. On 30 March 1795 the Convention had established the Ecole des Langues Orientales Vivantes and appointed Langlès director. He notes here that the Ecole was to teach Malay, but that "we" (meaning the Bibliothèque Nationale) have not a single grammar nor even a book in Malay except for one Bible at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. He further notes that it cost him much trouble and money to assemble his own small collection before the Revolution, and that the Dutch printed several grammars and dictionaries both in Europe and in the East Indies. Massieu had apparently found a copy of François Valentijn's 1724 Oud en nieuw Oost-Indien for him earlier ("Valentyn sur l'Inde"), so he turns to him once again. Finally, as he also notes in his letter, he appends a list of works on Malay known to him that he would like to acquire for the library. It is headed "Livres à demander pour la Bibliotheque Nationale", occupies the last two pages, and contains eleven works ranging from 1604 to 1780, all printed either in Amsterdam or in Batavia (Jakarta) in the Dutch East Indies. In very good condition, with only a small water stain in one corner of the second leaf. An interesting letter giving insights into the state of knowledge and progress in studies of the Malayan language in Revolutionary Paris.

Crepy, Paris 1763 - "The French edition of the Popple index map of 1733. Imrprint information is in what would normally be considered the title cartouche. The plate was later acquired by Crepy, ca. 1756." (McCorkel 96) This is a scarce and unusual German variant of the key map for Henry Popple's seminal map of North America. Unlike the Dutch and French versions, this German edition contains a geographical difference from the British original - Lake Champlain has two branches on the south end instead of just one. The thirteen British colonies are clearly delineated, just one year before the formal peace treaty between the United States and Britain. At right is a column of inset maps including Boston, New York, Charlestown, St. Augustine, Bermuda and several others. Shows the Spanish galleons' route from Vera Cruz to Havana is marked. The pictorial cartouche features Native Americans. Title above map, "Amerique Septentrionale Suivant la Carte de Pople?", Size : 520x510 (mm), 20.5x20.125 (Inches), Hand Colored, 0

Centuria Insectorum Rariorum quam... praeside... Carolo von Linné... submittit Boas Johansson.

Upsalia (1763). 8vo. (180 x145mm). pp. (6), 32. Cloth strip on spine. First edition. The 'Centuria Insectorum' (one hundred insects) is a 1763 taxonomic work by Carl Linnaeus, and defended as a thesis by Boas Johansson; which of the two men should be credited with its authorship has been the subject of some controversy. It includes descriptions of 102 new insects and crustacean species that had been sent to Linnaeus from British America, Suriname, Java and other locations. Most of the new names included in the 'Centuria Insectorum' are still in use, although a few have been sunk into synonymy, and one was the result of a hoax: a Common Brimstone butterfly with spots painted on was described as the new "species" Papilio ecclipsis./The specimens used by Linnaeus or Johansson in writing Centuria Insectorum include some provided by Dr Alexander Garden, a horticulturist from Charles Town in the Province of South Carolina, by Carl Gustav Dahlberg in Suriname, by Hans Johan Nordgren in Java, and from the collection of Baron Charles De Geer from the Province of Pennsylvania. The work appeared also in the 'Amoenitates Academicae'.//Soulsby 2251.

The World describ'd; or, a New and Correct set of Maps ... Each map engraved on Copper by Herman Moll

[London: Robert Sayer, 1763. Broadside (15 5/8 x 9 1/4 inches). A rare print and mapseller's broadside, advertising a late issue of Moll's atlas "The World Described" and a number of other atlases and county maps, and "upward ot 1200 single Sheet Maps, and Plans, by several Hands" Robert Sayer came to be one of the dominant figures in mid to late 18th-century print and map selling, latterly in partnership with John Bennett. The present broadside was published by Sayer alone: he took over the business of Philip Overton in about 1750, and the reference to "the late war" in the second to last line, suggests that it was published just after the end of the Seven Years' War which ended in 1763. This work, aside from the detailed descriptions of the 29 maps in the 'The World describ'd; or, a New and Correct Set of Maps', also describes the "English Gentleman's Guide" "portable in a Cloak Bag, or the Pocket'; and lists a number of the large-format surveys of the individual English counties (Oxfordshire by 'Mr. Oliver' and equivalent maps of Essex, Middlesex, Hertford, Kent, Sussex and Yorkshire); aa well as mentioning a de l'Isle atlas with 110 maps, Le Clerc's "Atlas of Ancient Geography" with 100 maps; wall maps; "Friex's 28 Sheet Map of Flanders and Brabant"; "several large Maps of Holland and Flanders, and upwards of 1200 single Sheet Maps, and Plans, by several Hands". This broadside is apparently unrecorded by ESTC, but does mention two other similar but earlier broadsides published by Moll himself, N27709 and T142508, both of which performed the same function as the present work.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

To Martin Folkes Esq.r President of the Royal Sociery: This Plan of the Cities of London and Westminster and Borough of Southwark, with the Contigious Buildings; is humbly Inscribed by his most humble Servants John Pine and John TInney.

1763 - London: John Ryall, John Bowles & Son & Thomas Bowles, 1763. 515 x 940mm. Minor repairs to edges. A reduction of Rocque's monumental 24-sheet map of London, here on one sheet, albeit an unusually large sheet of paper for the period. With the plan engraved by Isaac Basire and the letters by R.W. Seale, it was apparently published as an advertisement for the full-size map: the text under the map transcribes the endorsement of Folkes and Davall, two members of the Royal Society, for the accuracy of Rocque's trigonometrical survey. First published in 1749, this example comes from the third state; only the publication line has been changed. Usually a map of this size would have been printed on two sheets and then joined. Producing a map of this size needed not only a large sheet of paper, but also a large copper printing plate and press. HOWGEGO: 100. (3).

        The Reign of George VI.

London: for W. Nichol, 1763 - Duodecimo, pp. xxi, [1], 192; sig. A12 folded back to form initial blank. Contemporary mottled calf. Spine chipped at head and tail, joints cracked but held by cords, title leaf repaired at head with loss of first word "The", a few minor marks, a good copy. First edition of a scarce futuristic novel. "Uncanny in its choice of dates and in its prediction of the emergence of Russia and the United States as world powers, it describes a war between Britain and Russia (1900–01) which escalates into a world war between the British Empire and a coalition of Russia and France (1917–20) who between them have occupied much of Europe" (Howgego). Howgego, Imaginary Voyages and Invented Worlds, M4.

Garrison & Morton, 2203 : « Sauvages adopted the botanical system of Linnaeus for a classification of diseases ; his book exerted a wide influence on his contemporaries. He enumerated 2.400 different diseases.¿ ; Heirs of Hippocrates, 873 (éd. française) : « It is a unique work that served simultaneously as a medical textbook, lexicon, and dictionary. ¿ ; M.D.

      R. and J. Ottens, Amsterdam 1763 - Unrecorded issue of the Ottens map of the French and English possessions, published after the Treaty which ended the French and Indian War. In 1755, the Ottens issued a Dutch version of Jean Palairet's important map. The map showed the French and English territorial claims on the eve of the French and Indian War, with the colouring reflecting those claims. A unrecorded second issue of the map was published, however, following the Treaty of Paris which ended the war. In that issue, as in this copy, the date has been removed from the title and the colouring keys removed from either side of the scale of miles. More importantly, the colouring on the map reflects the new boundaries following the war: the English colonies are extended to the Mississippi, Louisiana is no longer coloured to be owned by France (the treaty ceding this vast region to Spain), a hashed boundary line now appears running the length of the Mississippi and extending northwest into the unexplored region presumed to be its source and a hashed boundary now divides Newfoundland and separates Labrador from British Canada. A very rare issue of the map reflecting the changing geo-political boundaries following the French and Indian War. Sellers & Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies 58 (1755 issue); McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps 755.9 (1755 issue); Phillips, A List of Maps of America , p. 575 (1755 issue). A PLAIN AND FAITHFUL NARRATIVE OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN, RISE, PROGRESS AND PRESENT STATE OF THE INDIAN CHARITY-SCHOOL AT LEBANON, IN CONNECTICUT

Boston: Printed by Richard and Samuel Draper, 1763.. 55pp. 19th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Extremities lightly rubbed. Bookplate of C.L.F. Robinson on front pastedown. Front fly leaf and titlepage loose. Minor toning and foxing; p.39 torn at edge, minutely affecting text. Pencil notes of Thomas W. Streeter, but without his bookplate. Very good. At the conclusion of the text (at the bottom of the recto of the final leaf) is a contemporary manuscript note reading: "Memorandum. Mr. Wheeler has transmitted an account of ye school for 2 years to Dr. Gifford who his ready to communicate it to any enquirer." Andrew Gifford (1700-84) was a Baptist minister and numismatist who donated a collection of books and a pair of globes to Wheelock's school in 1764. The first installment in Wheelock's series of publications giving the history of the first Indian school in America. This volume covers 1754- 62 and was followed by eight more such reports, taking the story up to 1775. Wheelock discusses the origins of the school and defends the missionary endeavor. The school, founded by Wheelock, opened in 1754 under the name of Moors Charity School.
