In certain of his statements Robinet appears to be heralding the theory of transformism and the idea that all living beings are constructed according to a single basic plan. Robinet`s work illustrates several important elements in the scientific thinking of the second half of the eighteenth century: the unity of nature, the chain of beings, universal dynamism and sensibility and vitalism. It also illustrates the role of Leibnitz in the development of enlightenment ideas on living nature. Robinet`s writings cast an interesting light on the genesis of the theory of transformism\".

Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

TEMPORARY ACTS AND LAWS OF HIS MAJESTY'S PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND. [with]: [CONSECUTIVE RUN OF MASSACHUSETTS COLONIAL LAWS, 1755 - 1763].

Boston. 1755-1763. - Paginations included in the individual listings below. Folio. Three- quarter calf and marbled boards in antique style. Title with closed tear, neatly repaired, p.455 mounted and partially supplied in manuscript, some tanning and foxing, mild occasional marginal dampstaining. Very good. An exceedingly rare collection of Massachusetts colonial laws with much content related to the French and Indian War. A 1755 act encourages and facilitates removal of "French Encroachments on his Majesty's North American Territories." Numerous acts prevent the exporting of provisions and "War-like Stores" from leaving the Massachusetts colony in order to keep them from the French, with one act specifically forbidding any subjects of "the French King" from being supplied with provisions. Some laws from 1755 and 1756 provide soldiers for the skirmishes near Crown Point, and also provide instructions for preventing and punishing desertion amongst the troops during the "Expedition against Crown- Point" and during the general defense of the "Frontiers of this Government." Other French and Indian War-related acts include "An Act for providing and maintaining two armed Vessels to Guard the Coast" (1756), "An Act for the more speedy levying Eighteen Hundred Men inclusive of Officers, to be employed in his Majesty's Service" (1757), "An Act to prevent the Desertion of Soldiers during the present War with France." (1757), "An Act for the Encouragement of Seamen to enlist.during the present War with France" (1757), "An Act making Provision for the Quartering and Billeting Recruiting Officers and Recruits in his Majesty's Regular Forces, employed for the Protection and Defence of his Majesty's Dominions in North-America" (1757, 1759), "An Act providing for the Reception and Accommodation of His Majesty's Forces within this Province" (1758), "An Act for the speedy Levying of Soldiers, for an intended Expedition against Canada" (1759), "An Act to prevent Soldiers and Seamen in his Majesty's Service fom being Arrested for Debt" (1760), and more. These types of demands by the British Crown on the local citizenry during the French and Indian War, especially the quartering acts, created tensions between the colonists and the Crown that grew over the next two decades into rebellion. Includes laws providing supplies, regulating trade, and preventing abuses to the Eastern Indians, and for laws "better regulating the Indians." In addition, there are laws covering debtors and creditors, roads, schools, militia, several acts governing livestock grazing, and more. Also includes the usual laws granting tax revenue to the colonial governor and the Treasury. A report of some proceedings on the commission of oyer and terminer and gaol delivery for the trial of the rebels in the year 1746 in the county of Surry [sic], and of other Crown cases. To which are added discourses upon a few branches of the Crown law.

Dublin: Printed for Sarah Cotter 8vo (20.3 cm, 8"). xii, 412, [16] pp.. 1763 First Irish edition, following the Oxford first of the preceding year: one of the most authoritative and scholarly of such reports of the time, accompanied by examinations of treason, homicide, accessories, the writings of Lord Hale, etc. Cotter's printing seems to have appeared in two variants, as per ESTC; in the present example, the catchword on p. 406 is "to." Cotter was the daughter of Joseph Cotter and successor to his printing business. She was active from 1757 to 1767 and published/printed law, technical and religious books, belle lettres, and a wide variety of other productions. The trial mentioned in the title refers to that of those arrested for participation in the Jacobite rising of 1745, an attempt by "Bonnie Prince Charlie" (i.e., Charles Edward Stuart) to regain the British throne. (He had timed his effort for a moment when much of the British military was occupied on the continent by the War of the Austrian Succession.) Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and blind-tooled tulip decorations between raised bands; hinges (inside) reinforced. Front pastedown and free endpaper each with one small early inked annotation (shelf and price?); first and last few leaves with offsetting to margins; pages generally mildly age-toned with a very few scattered light spots.

Oxoni: E typographeo Clarendoniano 8vo in 4s (23.5 cm, 9.25"). [4], 676 pp.. 1763 Sole octavo printing of the Greek New Testament using Baskerville type (i.e., Greek type that Baskerville designed and cut himself); and indeed this pleasingly was printed from the only set of Baskerville type that survives to this day, still at Oxford's Clarendon Press. The text was based on the Mill edition of the Greek N.T.; Darlow and Moule notes that while the text "generally reproduces that of Mill . . . Reuss notes seven variations." => An important example of 18th-century fine printing of the Bible. This copy retains its half-title. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released).         THE HISTORY OF LOUISIANA, OR OF THE WESTERN PARTS OF VIRGINIA AND CAROLINA...

London: Printed for T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, 1763. Half titles. 12mo. Antique half calf and marbled boards. Very good. First English language edition of one of the most useful contemporary authorities on French Louisiana, based on the author's sixteen-year residence there. Jefferson owned a copy of this London edition, and instructed Lewis and Clark to take a copy on their expedition (Lewis borrowed Benjamin Smith Barton's single-volume second London edition of 1774). Le Page du Pratz offers a great deal of useful information about the Natchez and other Mississippi tribes, and his work as a whole has been the basis for many later studies of the period. "...Valuable for showing French claims to southern territory east of the Mississippi and for particulars concerning Indian nations there" - Howes. Of special interest is a short account of Louis de St. Denis' expedition to New Mexico in 1715. "...A curious mixture of history, travel narrative, tall stories, and reminiscences...touch[ing] upon almost every phase of Louisiana in his time..." - Clark. There is a folding plan of New Orleans and a "Carte de la Louisiane," which shows a large eastward- flowing Missouri River. HOWES L266, "b." CLARK I:75. PILLING, PROOF-SHEETS 2261. GRAFF 2463.         THE DREADFUL VISITATION IN A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE PROGRESS AND EFFECTS OF THE PLAGUE, THE LAST TIME IT SPREAD IN THE CITY OF LONDON IN THE YEAR 1665 EXTRACTED FROM THE MEMOIRS OF A PERSON WHO RESIDED THERE, DURING THE WHOLE TIME OF THAT INFECTION

Germantown: Christopher Sower, 1763. Dbd. Minor foxing. Good plus. First American edition of this abridgement of Daniel Defoe's JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR, and notable for its imprint. Christopher Sower (Sauer) was an early American publisher based in Germantown who took over his father's publishing business in the mid-18th century. By 1754 the English publications of the Sauer press began to bear his imprint. He became a bishop of the Dunkers, or German Baptist Brethren, and as such was suspected of treason during the Revolution. His property was seized and sold "at auction" for a pittance, and, Sabin states, "The British used the poor fellow's books for making cartridges!" This Sower imprint is scarce, with only twenty-five copies recorded in ESTC, and rarely encountered in the marketplace. EVANS 9373. HILDEBURN 1885. AUSTIN 632. ESTC W6026.

TRAITÉ DE PAIX ENTRE LE ROI, LE ROI D'ESPAGNE ET LE ROI DE LA GRANDE-BRETAGNE, CONLU A PARIS LE 10 FÉVRIER 1763. AVEC L'ACCESSION DU ROI DE PORTUGAL

Paris: Imprimerie Royal, 1763. Quarto. Contemporary red morocco, gilt, with gilt crest and floral gilt designs on spine. 19th-century inscription on front fly leaf. Very minor foxing. A fine copy. The official French printing of the Treaty of Paris, the most important American Treaty of the 18th century except for the treaty ending the American War of Independence. It closed the long conflict of the Seven Years' or French and Indian War, and marked the end of France as a power in North America, producing a major shift in the balance of power on the continent. The removal of France from the North American continent opened the door for the expansion of the British colonies over the Alleghenies and gave them a self-sufficient posture never before possible. The removal of the French counterweight opened the door for American Independence. By the terms of the treaty all of Canada except two small islands off Newfoundland was ceded to England, as were all French lands east of the Mississippi. All of Louisiana was ceded to Spain, and France's New World holdings were reduced to several Caribbean islands, including Martinique, Guadeloupe, and several smaller islands. At the same time, East and West Florida went from Spain to England, who also received the Grenadines and Dominica. A vital landmark in the political history of colonial North America.         An essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances In Philosophical Transactions

London, 1763. Bayes, Thomas (1702?"61). An essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances. In Philosophical Transactions 53 (1763): 370?"418. Whole volume. [12], 529, [15, including index and errata]pp. 25 engraved plates. 225 x 170 mm. 18th century paneled calf, rebacked with new leather label, lower corners bumped. Fine, crisp copy. Small ownership stamp on general title. First Edition, journal issue. of Bayes?s extremely influential work on the concept of ?inverse probability,? the basis of modern statistical inference. Bayes?s paper marked ?a truly Copernican revolution in statistical concept,? giving rise to ?one of the most widely known eponyms in all of science, Baysian inference . . . The ideas this essay contains have been of vast influence? (Stigler, The History of Statistics, p. 97). With the advent of the World Wide Web, Baysian networks have been applied extensively to fundamental search structures such as those used by Google. Bayes?s Essay contains the first statement of Bayes?s Theorem for calculating ?inverse probabilities,? which forms the basis for methods of decision analysis, statistical learning machines, and Bayesian networks. Bayesian networks are complex diagrams that organize the body of knowledge in any given area by mapping out cause-and-effect relationships among key variables and encoding them with numbers that represent the extent to which one variable is likely to affect another. Programmed into computers, these systems can automatically generate optimal predictions or decisions even when key pieces of information are missing. Bayesian or subjective decision theory is arguably the most comprehensive theory of decision-making; however, until the late 1980s, it had little application due to the stupefying complexity of the mathematics involved. The rapid advances in computing power and the development of key mathematical equations during the late 1980s and early 1990s made it possible to compute Bayesian networks with enough variables to be useful in practical applications. Bayes, a Nonconformist minister (i.e., one who did not subscribe to the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Established Church of England), published only two works during his lifetime: Divine Benefits (1731), a religious treatise; and Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions (1736), in which he responded to Bishop Berkeley?s attack on the logical foundations of Newton?s calculus. For the latter work he was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1742. In 1763, two years after Bayes?s death, Richard Price, a fellow Nonconformist minister, economist, and actuary to whom Bayes had bequeathed his papers, found Bayes?s ?Essay? and submitted it to the Royal Society for publication. The arguments in Bayes?s paper were adopted by Laplace, who saw in them the basis for statistical inference; they were later challenged by George Boole in his Laws of Thought.         Carte de L'Isle de Sainte Lucie

Paris: J.N. Bellin, 1763. Copper-engraved map, in excellent condition, stamped on upper-center with the stamp of the French royal maritime printing office: "De l'Imp. de Dep. de la Mar. à Versail" A very elegant and detailed map of St. Lucia by one of the greatest French cartographers This very fine map of St. Lucia surrounds the island in seas traversed by rhumb lines. The rugged topography of this, one of the most scenic islands of the Caribbean, is captured in great detail. Oriented with the east towards the top of the map, the island features two broad ranges of mountains, which were formed by extreme tectonic activity. In the centre of the island is a plain that features a road, "Chemin de la Longue Chasse ou de la Soufriere" that runs the length of the island. In the lower left of the map is the "Pointe du Gros Piton", the distinctive mountain formation that cascades into the sea, and that is today St. Lucia's most celebrated site. The various aspects of the coast are labelled in great detail, and many places near the sea are dotted with the cultivated fields of sugarcane and banana plantations. Three cartographic insets adorn the upper portions of the map, each depicting one of the island's best harbours. Intended for practical use by mariners, each harbour is heavily detailed with depth soundings and notations of hazards. The insets are "Plan du Port du Carenage" (site of St. Lucia's modern capital of Castries), "Plan du Cul de Sac Des Roseaux" and "Mouilliages du Grande Islet et du Choc". The map is embellished with a very fine title cartouche, bordered by transitional Rococo and Neoclassical motifs, and surmounted by the French royal arms. St. Lucia was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1500, and named for St. Lucy of Syracuse. The French assumed auspices over the island in 1660, having signed a treaty with the indigenous Carib tribe. Over the next century and a half, the island went back and forth fourteen times between French and British sovereignty before the British assumed an enduring hegemony in 1814. The island became an independent member of the Commonwealth in 1979. This map was part of the l'Hydrographie Française, a great sea atlas, published by Bellin in two volumes from 1755 to 1766. This was one of the finest works of the prolific Bellin, the "Hydrographer to the King", who was so highly regarded that the British (who were almost always at war with France) made him a member of their Royal Society. Map Collector's Circle 81, (St. Lucia) 6-9, pl.1.
