An essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances In Philosophical Transactions

London, 1763. Bayes, Thomas (1702?"61). An essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances. In Philosophical Transactions 53 (1763): 370?"418. Whole volume. [12], 529, [15, including index and errata]pp. 25 engraved plates. 225 x 170 mm. 18th century paneled calf, rebacked with new leather label, lower corners bumped. Fine, crisp copy. Small ownership stamp on general title. First Edition, journal issue. of Bayes?s extremely influential work on the concept of ?inverse probability,? the basis of modern statistical inference. Bayes?s paper marked ?a truly Copernican revolution in statistical concept,? giving rise to ?one of the most widely known eponyms in all of science, Baysian inference . . . The ideas this essay contains have been of vast influence? (Stigler, The History of Statistics, p. 97). With the advent of the World Wide Web, Baysian networks have been applied extensively to fundamental search structures such as those used by Google. Bayes?s Essay contains the first statement of Bayes?s Theorem for calculating ?inverse probabilities,? which forms the basis for methods of decision analysis, statistical learning machines, and Bayesian networks. Bayesian networks are complex diagrams that organize the body of knowledge in any given area by mapping out cause-and-effect relationships among key variables and encoding them with numbers that represent the extent to which one variable is likely to affect another. Programmed into computers, these systems can automatically generate optimal predictions or decisions even when key pieces of information are missing. Bayesian or subjective decision theory is arguably the most comprehensive theory of decision-making; however, until the late 1980s, it had little application due to the stupefying complexity of the mathematics involved. The rapid advances in computing power and the development of key mathematical equations during the late 1980s and early 1990s made it possible to compute Bayesian networks with enough variables to be useful in practical applications. Bayes, a Nonconformist minister (i.e., one who did not subscribe to the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Established Church of England), published only two works during his lifetime: Divine Benefits (1731), a religious treatise; and Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions (1736), in which he responded to Bishop Berkeley?s attack on the logical foundations of Newton?s calculus. For the latter work he was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1742. In 1763, two years after Bayes?s death, Richard Price, a fellow Nonconformist minister, economist, and actuary to whom Bayes had bequeathed his papers, found Bayes?s ?Essay? and submitted it to the Royal Society for publication. The arguments in Bayes?s paper were adopted by Laplace, who saw in them the basis for statistical inference; they were later challenged by George Boole in his Laws of Thought.         Carte de L'Isle de Sainte Lucie

Paris: J.N. Bellin, 1763. Copper-engraved map, in excellent condition, stamped on upper-center with the stamp of the French royal maritime printing office: "De l'Imp. de Dep. de la Mar. à Versail" A very elegant and detailed map of St. Lucia by one of the greatest French cartographers This very fine map of St. Lucia surrounds the island in seas traversed by rhumb lines. The rugged topography of this, one of the most scenic islands of the Caribbean, is captured in great detail. Oriented with the east towards the top of the map, the island features two broad ranges of mountains, which were formed by extreme tectonic activity. In the centre of the island is a plain that features a road, "Chemin de la Longue Chasse ou de la Soufriere" that runs the length of the island. In the lower left of the map is the "Pointe du Gros Piton", the distinctive mountain formation that cascades into the sea, and that is today St. Lucia's most celebrated site. The various aspects of the coast are labelled in great detail, and many places near the sea are dotted with the cultivated fields of sugarcane and banana plantations. Three cartographic insets adorn the upper portions of the map, each depicting one of the island's best harbours. Intended for practical use by mariners, each harbour is heavily detailed with depth soundings and notations of hazards. The insets are "Plan du Port du Carenage" (site of St. Lucia's modern capital of Castries), "Plan du Cul de Sac Des Roseaux" and "Mouilliages du Grande Islet et du Choc". The map is embellished with a very fine title cartouche, bordered by transitional Rococo and Neoclassical motifs, and surmounted by the French royal arms. St. Lucia was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1500, and named for St. Lucy of Syracuse. The French assumed auspices over the island in 1660, having signed a treaty with the indigenous Carib tribe. Over the next century and a half, the island went back and forth fourteen times between French and British sovereignty before the British assumed an enduring hegemony in 1814. The island became an independent member of the Commonwealth in 1979. This map was part of the l'Hydrographie Française, a great sea atlas, published by Bellin in two volumes from 1755 to 1766. This was one of the finest works of the prolific Bellin, the "Hydrographer to the King", who was so highly regarded that the British (who were almost always at war with France) made him a member of their Royal Society. Map Collector's Circle 81, (St. Lucia) 6-9, pl.1.

Germantown: Christopher Sower, 1763. - 16pp. Dbd. Minor foxing. Good plus. First American edition of this abridgement of Daniel Defoe's JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR, and notable for its imprint. Christopher Sower (Sauer) was an early American publisher based in Germantown who took over his father's publishing business in the mid-18th century. By 1754 the English publications of the Sauer press began to bear his imprint. He became a bishop of the Dunkers, or German Baptist Brethren, and as such was suspected of treason during the Revolution. His property was seized and sold "at auction" for a pittance, and, Sabin states, "The British used the poor fellow's books for making cartridges!" This Sower imprint is scarce, with only twenty-five copies recorded in ESTC, and rarely encountered in the marketplace. EVANS 9373. HILDEBURN 1885. AUSTIN 632. ESTC W6026.

Leeuwarden: Abraham Ferweda [vol. 1]; ... en Gerrit Tresling [vols. 2-3], 1763. Folio, 3 volumes in 2. (13 7/8 x 9 7/8 inches). Titles with a typographic border printed in red, engraved arms on the dedication. 39 hand-coloured plates engraved by Jan C. Philips or Jacob Folkema after Knoop. Contemporary speckled calf, spines with raised bands in seven compartments, bands tooled in gilt, red morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, red stained edges A lovely set of the first editions of Knoop's fruit monographs: "among the earliest books on the subject to be illustrated with coloured plates" (Oak Spring Pomona). Knoop served as the head gardener to the Dowager Princess of Orange et Marienburg, near Leeuwarden. "[His] fruit monographs, apples and pears in the first, plums, peaches, cherries, nuts and soft fruit in the second, are among the earliest books on the subject to be illustrated with coloured plates, the Pomologia ones packed with a dozen or so varieties, each with a label giving its time of ripening ... As descriptive records of varieties of fruit in cultivation, observed by a dedicated and scientific gardener late in his career, they are often cited by later authors" (Oak Spring Pomona). In all, Knoop published four monographs in the series, three of which are found here, with the fourth on herbs and vegetables being published in 1769 over a decade after the first part. Raphael notes that "the last part is very rare and most sets lack this final section on the contents of the kitchen garden." The plates, based on Knoop's own drawings, are made up as follows: in the first work are 12 plates of apples showing 103 varieties; 8 of pears showing 82 varieties. The plates in the second work include one plate with 2 quince varieties; 3 varieties of cherry on one plate; 3 varieties of plum on one plate; 1 apricot, 1 peach, 1 almond, 1 fig, each on a single plate; 2 grapes on one plate; 1 chestnut, 1 walnut, 1 hazelnut, 1 medlar, 1 mulberry, 1 raspberry, 1 blackberry, each on a single plate; 3 currants on one plate; 1 gooseberry, 1 unidentified fruit tree, 1 cornelian cherry, each on a single plate. No illustrations appear in the third part concerning trees. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3766, 3767 & 3768; Oak Spring Pomona , p. 131.

The World describ'd; or, a New and Correct set of Maps ... Each map engraved on Copper by Herman Moll ..

[London: Robert Sayer, 1763. Broadside (15 5/8 x 9 1/4 inches). A rare print and mapseller's broadside, advertising a late issue of Moll's atlas "The World Described" and a number of other atlases and county maps, and "upward ot 1200 single Sheet Maps, and Plans, by several Hands" Robert Sayer came to be one of the dominant figures in mid to late 18th-century print and map selling, latterly in partnership with John Bennett. The present broadside was published by Sayer alone: he took over the business of Philip Overton in about 1750, and the reference to "the late war" in the second to last line, suggests that it was published just after the end of the Seven Years' War which ended in 1763. This work, aside from the detailed descriptions of the 29 maps in the 'The World describ'd; or, a New and Correct Set of Maps', also describes the "English Gentleman's Guide" "portable in a Cloak Bag, or the Pocket'; and lists a number of the large-format surveys of the individual English counties (Oxfordshire by 'Mr. Oliver' and equivalent maps of Essex, Middlesex, Hertford, Kent, Sussex and Yorkshire); aa well as mentioning a de l'Isle atlas with 110 maps, Le Clerc's "Atlas of Ancient Geography" with 100 maps; wall maps; "Friex's 28 Sheet Map of Flanders and Brabant"; "several large Maps of Holland and Flanders, and upwards of 1200 single Sheet Maps, and Plans, by several Hands". This broadside is apparently unrecorded by ESTC, but does mention two other similar but earlier broadsides published by Moll himself, N27709 and T142508, both of which performed the same function as the present work.

1763 - 5 vol. 1 front. 16 pl. Amsterdam, E. Van Harevelt, 1763-1768, in-8, 5 vol. 1 front. Bon exemplaire. Traces de mouillures marginales, des rousseurs. Kress, 6100 ; INED, 1772. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

NEWFOUNDLAND: Carte Réduite de l'île de Terre-Neuve. Dressée d'après les Plans anglois de J. Cook et M. Lane .

      - A fine French edition of James Cook & Michael Lane’s magisterial chart of Newfoundland, considered to be one of the finest scientific surveys conducted anywhere in the world during the Enlightenment Era. This exquisitely engraved, large-format sea chart was produced by the Dépôt Général de la Marine (the maritime chart printing office of the French government) just after the end of the American Revolution, and features James Cook (the future Pacific explorer) & Michal Lane’s ground-breaking survey of Newfoundland and southern Labrador. Cook & Lane’s survey is widely considered to be one of the most technically impressive accomplishments of scientific mapping done during the Enlightenment Era, and the present edition of the map was made by the French government to manage its extensive interests in the fishing industry in the region. The incredibly jagged coasts of the Island of Newfoundland and Southern Labrador are portrayed with amazing accuracy, based on almost a decade of painstaking trigonometric surveys. All coastal features are meticulously labelled and the extensive offshore banks are carefully sounded with bathymetric readings. Cook & Lane’s Epic Survey of Newfoundland The story behind the creation of this chart is fascinating and one of the most consequential in the history of 18th Century cartography. In 1763, Britain had won the Seven Years' War, however, the Treaty of Paris compelled Britain to cede the tiny islands of St. Pierre & Miquelon (located off the southern coast of Newfoundland) to France and to provide the French with limited fishing rights along Newfoundland's shores. The Newfoundland fishery was then big business, in fact, it was annually worth nearly as much as Virginia's tobacco crop, which was Britain's largest single source of revenue from British North American colonies. The British had an imperative to properly manage the fishery (and limit French activities to strictly what was conceded in the Treaty), the problem was, all existing charts of Newfoundland's coasts were wildly inaccurate. For instance, the contemporary chart of record for the region was Mount & Page's A Chart Shewing Part of the Sea Coast of Newfoundland, from ye Bay of Bulls to Little Placentia Exactly and Carefully Lay'd Down by John Gaudy, first issued in 1715, it as so imprecise as to be scarcely useful. That year, Admiral Thomas Graves, the Governor of Newfoundland, appointed Lt. James Cook (1728-79) to survey the shores of Newfoundland and southern Labrador. Cook had already won acclaim for his masterly chart of the St. Lawrence River that was used by the British fleet to successfully besiege Quebec City in 1759. However, given the ferocious weather and the exceptional cragginess of Newfoundland's shores, this would prove to be a dramatically more difficult assignment. Fortunately, Cook was assisted by Michael Lane (fl. 1763-84), a highly competent surveyor who refined his skills to the highest levels under Cook's mentorship. The Newfoundland survey proceeded expeditiously until 1767, when Cook was appointed by the Admiralty to lead the first of the three Pacific Voyages that would make him the foremost explorer of the 18th Century. The superlative quality of the surveys already sent back to England, combined with glowing reports from Cook's superiors had been responsible for this august appointment. From that point onwards, Lane was left to lead the project to survey Newfoundland on his own. From that point onwards, Lane was left to lead the project to survey Newfoundland on his own, completing the endeavour in 1773. Cook & Lane’s general chart of Newfoundland was first published as A General Chart Of The Island Of Newfoundland with the Rocks & Soundings. Drawn from Surveys taken by Order of the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. By James Cook and Michael Lane Surveyors and Others (London, 1775). This chart and the various larger-scale regional surveys of the coasts immediately became the authoritati

A report of some proceedings on the commission of oyer and terminer and gaol delivery for the trial of the rebels in the year 1746 in the county of Surry [sic], and of other Crown cases. To which are added discourses upon a few branches of the Crown law.

Dublin: Printed for Sarah Cotter 8vo (20.3 cm, 8"). xii, 412, [16] pp.. 1763 First Irish edition, following the Oxford first of the preceding year: one of the most authoritative and scholarly of such reports of the time, accompanied by examinations of treason, homicide, accessories, the writings of Lord Hale, etc. Cotter's printing seems to have appeared in two variants, as per ESTC; in the present example, the catchword on p. 406 is "to." Cotter was the daughter of Joseph Cotter and successor to his printing business. She was active from 1757 to 1767 and published/printed law, technical and religious books, belle lettres, and a wide variety of other productions. The trial mentioned in the title refers to that of those arrested for participation in the Jacobite rising of 1745, an attempt by "Bonnie Prince Charlie" (i.e., Charles Edward Stuart) to regain the British throne. (He had timed his effort for a moment when much of the British military was occupied on the continent by the War of the Austrian Succession.) Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and blind-tooled tulip decorations between raised bands; hinges (inside) reinforced. Front pastedown and free endpaper each with one small early inked annotation (shelf and price?); first and last few leaves with offsetting to margins; pages generally mildly age-toned with a very few scattered light spots.

Boston: Reverend the President and Fellows of Harvard-College, 1763. Half title. Contemporary half calf and marbled paper boards, raised bands. Binding rubbed and edgeworn. Contemporary gift inscriptions on front free endpaper, ownership signatures excised from upper margin of half title and titlepage. A few instances of ink notes, emendations, and cross-outs in the text. Some tanning and foxing. A good copy, in original condition. A presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Mr. John Lovell from his most Hble. Servt. S.S." Stephen Sewall (1734-1804) was professor of Hebrew at Harvard and was one of the leading scholars of his day, specializing in Oriental languages and Hebrew. In 1761, Sewall succeeded Judah Monis as instructor in Hebrew at Harvard, a position Sewall held for more than twenty years. The recipient of this volume was almost certainly the John Lovell who was the longtime headmaster of the Boston Latin School. This is the second Hebrew grammar produced in America, preceded only by a work by Monis published in 1735. Rosenbach asserts that the Hebrew types used in it were destroyed by fire in 1764. The final twenty-three pages are comprised of a study of Hebrew poetry. There are several early corrections in the text, possibly in the hand of Sewall or Lovell.

Centuria Insectorum Rariorum quam. praeside. Carolo von Linné. submittit Boas Johansson.

      - Upsalia (1763). 8vo. (180 x145mm). pp. (6), 32. Cloth strip on spine. First edition. The 'Centuria Insectorum' (one hundred insects) is a 1763 taxonomic work by Carl Linnaeus, and defended as a thesis by Boas Johansson; which of the two men should be credited with its authorship has been the subject of some controversy. It includes descriptions of 102 new insects and crustacean species that had been sent to Linnaeus from British America, Suriname, Java and other locations. Most of the new names included in the 'Centuria Insectorum' are still in use, although a few have been sunk into synonymy, and one was the result of a hoax: a Common Brimstone butterfly with spots painted on was described as the new "species" Papilio ecclipsis. The specimens used by Linnaeus or Johansson in writing Centuria Insectorum include some provided by Dr Alexander Garden, a horticulturist from Charles Town in the Province of South Carolina, by Carl Gustav Dahlberg in Suriname, by Hans Johan Nordgren in Java, and from the collection of Baron Charles De Geer from the Province of Pennsylvania. The work appeared also in the 'Amoenitates Academicae'.Soulsby 2251. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[N.p., 1763. Quarto sheet. Separation at old fold, repaired on verso with contemporary paper. Minor wear otherwise. Very good. Croghan, a deputy Indian agent serving under British agent William Johnson, writes to an unnamed recipient concerning a map of the northern British colonies. This letter presumably accompanied the map in question, and both this letter and the map were likely sent to a cartographer or artisan of some kind; due to the date and the available resources, it is almost certain that the map to which Croghan refers is that of Lewis Evans. The letter reads, in part: "I Send you this Map wh. is to be Inlarged Takeing In all the province of New York to Connecticut River and as far back as the Limits of Cannada all the Jersey Pensylvaine Maryland & Virginia the Lackes & back Cuntry is properly & well Lay'd. Down in this & the Larger Scail its Lay'd. Down on the better, one Copey is for Sir William Johnson to Settle the Boundry with the Indians by the other is to be Sent the proprietors when the boundry is [pricht?] of, on itt." In the lower left corner is written in another hand: "The Map when Enlarged was 7 ft 2 in Length & 4 ft 3 inches in Breadth. Takeing in Connecticut River & the Massisippa all Virgina & Canda to the Lat. of Montreal." As indicated in the letter, the map was to assist in the boundary dispute between the British and the Native Americans, giving a probable date for the letter to circa 1763, around the end of Pontiac's Rebellion and the Royal Proclamation of 1763, which legally curtailed white settlement past the Appalachian Mountains. George Croghan (1718-82) was an Irish-born fur trader who became acquainted with the Great Lake Region Indians and their languages through his trading pursuits. Breaking the traditional modus operandi of British traders, Croghan traveled to the Indians, rather than waiting for them to arrive at a British post. This allowed him to spend time among the native peoples, whom he grew to respect, learning their customs and languages. In 1756 he began service as the deputy Indian agent under William Johnson, the British Indian agent in the area, a position he held until retiring in 1772. A fascinating document, which gives rise to the question of whether or not such a large scale map was created, and if so, does it still exist somewhere.

Dublin, 1763. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt leather label. Extremities rubbed. Minor scattered foxing and soiling. Very good. An interesting work, first published in Dublin, comprised of selections from the ANNUAL REGISTER from 1758 to 1763, this work provides an excellent contemporary account of the military events of the French and Indian War, especially the Siege of Quebec. This work is sometimes ascribed to Edmund Burke, as he was editor of the ANNUAL REGISTER during the period covered. The attribution to John Wright stems from the London 1765 edition which gives that name, possibly a pseudonym for Burke as author. With a large folding map of the British and French territories in North America, a folding view of Montreal, a plan of Louisbourg, and several engraved portraits, subjects of which include Admiral Boscawen, Gen. James Wolfe, George III, Prince Ferdinand, and Frederick III.

Contemporary manuscript notations to endpapers. Very good to near fine. In a cloth box, gilt leather label. The second edition of the first European language Bible printed in America, after the first of 1743. The text is based on Martin Luther's version by way of the thirty- fourth edition of the Halle Bible, with Book Three of Edras, Book Four of Edras, and Book Three of Maccabees supplied from the Berlenburg Bible. The present edition, rumored to have been issued in 2000 copies, was printed by Christopher Saur II, son of Christoph Saur the elder, a native of Wittgenstein, Germany. The elder Saur emigrated to Germantown, Pennsylvania and practiced medicine before turning to printing. It was he who printed the 1743 first edition.       Boston, 1763. Early 20th century three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Bookplate of C.L.F. Robinson on front pastedown. A large, untrimmed copy. Minor toning and foxing; p.39 torn at edge, minutely affecting text. Pencil notes of Thomas W. Streeter, but without his bookplate. Very good. From the famous collection of C.L.F. Robinson in Newport, and later Thomas W. Streeter, an interesting copy of this famous work. The first installment in Wheelock's series of publications giving the history of the first Indian school in America. This volume covers 1754-62 and was followed by eight more such reports, taking the story up to 1775. Wheelock discusses the origins of the school and defends the missionary endeavor. The school, founded by Wheelock, opened in 1754 under the name of Moors Charity School. In 1772 it was removed to Hanover, "where it formed the germ of the institution, known as Dartmouth College" (Field). At the conclusion of the text (at the bottom of the recto of the final leaf) is a contemporary manuscript note reading: "Memorandum. Mr. Wheeler has transmitted an account of ye school for 2 years to Dr. Gifford who his ready to communicate it to any enquirer." Andrew Gifford (1700-84) was a Baptist minister and numismatist who donated a collection of books and a pair of globes to Wheelock's school in 1764.

Album of 18th Century miniature portraits of the Austrian Nobility].

      - A historically important an exquisitely rendered 18th Century collection of miniature portraits of members of the Austrian nobility, attributed to Karl Alexander von Schell, in the manner of Jean-Étienne Liotard. Manuscript portrait album, with 78 drawings (pen and ink and watercolour) on 66 sheets of paper and parchment, 2 volumes, bound in contemporary dark calf, each 16 x 22.5 cm. Condition: Overall very good; some portraits trimmed and mounted (without loss to artwork), probably by the author; some drawings with minor staining, otherwise in good clean condition; some leaves loose; fly leaves of volumes slightly stained; one list at the back of one volume with small worm holes; paper leaves bearing watermark of C.I. Honig, bindings rubbed at extremities. Presented here are two albums containing 78 miniature portraits, generally of members of the Austrian nobility, executed roughly between 1763 and 1775 in Vienna and Trieste. The portraits, drafted on both paper and parchment, are of exceptional artistic merit, in line with the style for the genre introduced to the Habsburg Court by Jean-Étienne Liotard. While unsigned, strong evidence leads to the attribution of the portraits to Karl Alexander Schell, a Swabian nobleman who was a highly gifted artist and who inhabited the same rarified social circles as the subjects of the portraits. The portraits are by the hand of a highly virtuous painter, as the precise lines of the draftsmanship are softened by the elegant use of watercolor accents. The visages are made to come to life, framed by the elegant coiffure, clothing and jewelry favoured by the contemporary elite of the Habsburg Empire. Some of the portraits of the female figures are drafted on parchment, giving the subjects a wonderfully luminous appearance. The portraits depict many influential figures in the Austrian Empire during the mid to late 18th Century, including many members of the higher nobility in Vienna and Trieste, most of them well recorded in novels and histories regarding the period. Also featured are Habsburg government officials, foreign diplomats and senior members of the clergy. A list at the end of each volume identifies the subjects portrayed. The album includes portraits of the members of eminent noble families, such as Lantieri, Zinzendorf, Herberstein, Kollonitsch, Harrach and Khevenhüller, amongst many others. Highlights include the portrayal of Anton Franz de Paula Graf Lamberg-Sprinzenstein, a well-known art collector and the director of the Imperial and Royal Unified Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Johanna Katharina von Zois, was the mother of the celebrated natural scientist Sigmund Zois.Michel de Pinet was a Consul of France in Trieste and an art collector, as well as a friend and colleague of the archeologist Ésprit-Marie Cousinéry.Maria Anna von Posch, together with her husband, the scientist Franz Anton Mesmer, was one of the earliest patrons of the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Some of the subjects in the album, such as Emanuel Anton, Count von Torres and the playwright Pietro Chiari, belonged to the circle of Giacomo Casnanova, as did the countess Maria Aloysia Lantieri. Casanova met Lantieri in 1773 and wrote about her as beeing "as beautiful as a star; she inspired me with a passion that would have made me unhappy if I had not had strength enough to wrap my love with the veil of the greatest reverence." Lantieri also befriended Johann Ludwig von Goethe, who mentioned her in his account of his Italian travels. The portraits within the albums can be dated to approximately between 1763 and 1775, during the height of the glorious reign of Empress Maria Theresa. Three of the portraits are dated and all of the miniatures seem to have been drafted in either Trieste or Vienna. The volume that is bound in contemporary brown leather predates the volume bound in dark, almost black leather, and seems to generally feature portraits that were executed in Trieste. Most of the portraits in the latter

Antique half calf and marbled boards. Very good. First English language edition of one of the most useful contemporary authorities on French Louisiana, based on the author's sixteen-year residence there. Jefferson owned a copy of this London edition, and instructed Lewis and Clark to take a copy on their expedition (Lewis borrowed Benjamin Smith Barton's single-volume second London edition of 1774). Le Page du Pratz offers a great deal of useful information about the Natchez and other Mississippi tribes, and his work as a whole has been the basis for many later studies of the period. Of special interest is a short account of Louis de St. Denis' expedition to New Mexico in 1715.
