Rome Bouchard & Gravier 1763 - First edition. Large folio (51 x 40 cm). Engraved title-page [2pp] advertisement, 72pp, 44 engraved double-page plates, all captioned in Italian and French, 21 text engravings, large engraved plan of the Gran Basilica di S. Pietro in Vaticano bound in before title-page some very minor spotting throughout, some repairs to the tears to folds, few restored marginal defects, repaired tears to last two text leaves. Small stamp to title. All plates and text leaves mounted on new guards. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, restored and repaired. Jean Barbault ( 1718-1762) was a French artist working in Rome. He was part of the circle of artists which included Piranesi, Duflos and Legeay and contributed to Piranesi's "Vedute di Roma" and also collaborated on "Antichita romane". His work was extremely successful and though influenced heavily by Piranesi, he is an impressive and energetic topographical artist in his own right. "Barbault's presentation of views and fragments of ancient sculpture are extraordinarily tactile and appealing" (Millard). This work contains impressive views of important churches, places, palaces, fountains and bridges of Renaissance and Baroque Rome. Each plate is accompanied by an extensive and informative text which included a history of each building. The high quality plates were made by Domenico Montagi and an entire team of engravers. There was a later edition of this work published in 1773 by Bourchard but this lacked the text and the quality of the engravings is inferior. Fowler 37, Millard: Italian and Spanish Books, p. 41.

One folding engraved plate. 2 p.l., cccxxv, 189, [1] pp.; 1 p.l., 24, [4], 640 pp. Two vols. 8vo, cont. pale brown morocco (a bit of wear), arms in gilt on covers of Louis XV, triple gilt fillet rounds sides, gilt fleur de lys in corners, flat spines gilt, crowns in gilt in four compartments, red morocco lettering pieces in the other two, dentelles gilt, red silk endpapers. Paris: Vincent, 1763. First edition of this important work in botanical classification, this is the copy of Louis XV, bound in pale brown morocco with arms in gilt on each cover. In this book Adanson proclaimed his contempt for "systems" and proposed a natural classification based upon all characters rather than upon a few arbitrarily selected ones, an attempt that brought him into conflict with Linnaeus. Adanson (1727-1806), was sent to Senegal in 1748 to catalogue the natural resources of the country. "The bewildering diversity of tropical vegetation makes the systems of classification proposed by Tournefort and Linnaeus appear pitifully inadequate, based as they had been on the wild flora of Europe and a limited number of cultivated plants...he concluded that, by making a large number of systems and then putting together those plants which belonged together in the greatest number of systems without attaching greater importance to one set of characters than another, he could make one generally satisfactory natural system."-from the "Introduction" to Vol. II, pp. xcii-xciii of the Hunt Botanical Catalogue. The first volume contains a history of botanical classification and a detailed chronological table of botanical authors. Adanson was also a proponent of phonetic spelling and employed it to some extent in this work. Fine set. Engraved bookplate of Henri Lambert and another. ❧ D.S.B., I, pp. 58-59. Hunt 577. Morton, History of Botanical Science, pp. 301-11-"Its effect was profound and permanent." .

All but the first 12 plates with Latin names supplied in neat contemporary manuscript captions. FIRST EDITION OF JACQUIN'S FIRST MAJOR PUBLICATION AND HIS FIRST ILLUSTRATED WORK First edition. The 184 engraved plates after Jacquin "are excellent for the period" (Zimmer). "Jacquin's first major publication and his first illustrated work is based on his travels to the West Indies, 1755 and 1759" (De Belder). The additional engraved frontispiece-title shows two Native Americans holding up a banner containing a map of the West Indies, surrounded by Caribbean flowering plants and animals, and the title within a ribbon. The engraved title vignette depicts colonists arriving on a Caribbean island in a stormy sea. "In 1754, at the age of 27, a botanist born in Leiden, Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin, made his first expedition to Central America. He was collecting seeds and plants for the Imperial gardens at Schonbrunn in Vienna. He took with him his Dutch head gardener and two Italian zoologists, and initially they concentrated on Grenada, Martinique, and Domingo, then under the control of the French. Von Jacquin sent the others home, in succession, laden with plants, but was himself captured by the British and kept prisoner for over a year. On his release, he remained in America, visiting Cuba and Jamaica to collect more plants before returning to Vienna in 1759. His books are among the finest of the period: 'Selectarum stirpium Americanarum historia' was first published in 1763" [as here] (Martyn Rix, "The Golden Age of Botanical Art," p. 114).Stafleu and Cowan call this book "an important complement to the 1760 'Enumeratio' and should always be consulted with it."

1 p.l., v-xliv, 543 pp.; 1 p.l., [3]-829 pp. Two vols. 8vo, cont. sheep (corners worn, head of spine of Vol. II a bit chipped), spines gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines, a.e.g. Paris: Barrois, 1763. The sale catalogue of one of the most important and largest of all private book collections, especially strong in medicine and natural history; Peignot states (p. 97) "ce catalogue est un des plus considérables qui existent." Falconet (1671-1762), French court physician, was a book collector for more than seventy years and this catalogue contains 19,798 lots (the library comprised about 60,000 books; many of the lots are bundles) of which over 6000 lots are of medical, natural historical, or scientific interest. Falconet came from a long line of physicians and he himself was consulted during the last illness of Louis XIV, and became "médecin consultant" to Louis XV. The catalogue is preceded by a biographical sketch of the collector (including a list of his publications) and bibliographical notes. At the end of Vol. II is a most useful author index of 698 columns. Falconet presented to the Bibliothèque du Roi (today's Bibliothèque Nationale) some 11,000 volumes not contained in that library, but reserved their use for his lifetime. They are indicated in the catalogue by brackets (an absolutely unique feature in an auction catalogue). This was one of the largest donations ever made to the B.N. Clearly, Falconet's gratitude for his appointment as court physician prompted his bequest, one of the largest on record, to the Royal Library. Diderot felt that the love of books was only pardonable in two cases: 1) "lorsqu'on sait les estimer... 2) lorsqu'on les possède pour les autres autant que pour soi... On peut sur ces deux points proposer M. Falconet pour modèle." Very good set. Priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Priced copies are very uncommon. ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 457. Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 169. In certain of his statements Robinet appears to be heralding the theory of transformism and the idea that all living beings are constructed according to a single basic plan. Robinet`s work illustrates several important elements in the scientific thinking of the second half of the eighteenth century: the unity of nature, the chain of beings, universal dynamism and sensibility and vitalism. It also illustrates the role of Leibnitz in the development of enlightenment ideas on living nature. Robinet`s writings cast an interesting light on the genesis of the theory of transformism\".

Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

TEMPORARY ACTS AND LAWS OF HIS MAJESTY'S PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND. [with]: [CONSECUTIVE RUN OF MASSACHUSETTS COLONIAL LAWS, 1755 - 1763].

Boston. 1755-1763. - Paginations included in the individual listings below. Folio. Three- quarter calf and marbled boards in antique style. Title with closed tear, neatly repaired, p.455 mounted and partially supplied in manuscript, some tanning and foxing, mild occasional marginal dampstaining. Very good. An exceedingly rare collection of Massachusetts colonial laws with much content related to the French and Indian War. A 1755 act encourages and facilitates removal of "French Encroachments on his Majesty's North American Territories." Numerous acts prevent the exporting of provisions and "War-like Stores" from leaving the Massachusetts colony in order to keep them from the French, with one act specifically forbidding any subjects of "the French King" from being supplied with provisions. Some laws from 1755 and 1756 provide soldiers for the skirmishes near Crown Point, and also provide instructions for preventing and punishing desertion amongst the troops during the "Expedition against Crown- Point" and during the general defense of the "Frontiers of this Government." Other French and Indian War-related acts include "An Act for providing and maintaining two armed Vessels to Guard the Coast" (1756), "An Act for the more speedy levying Eighteen Hundred Men inclusive of Officers, to be employed in his Majesty's Service" (1757), "An Act to prevent the Desertion of Soldiers during the present War with France." (1757), "An Act for the Encouragement of Seamen to enlist.during the present War with France" (1757), "An Act making Provision for the Quartering and Billeting Recruiting Officers and Recruits in his Majesty's Regular Forces, employed for the Protection and Defence of his Majesty's Dominions in North-America" (1757, 1759), "An Act providing for the Reception and Accommodation of His Majesty's Forces within this Province" (1758), "An Act for the speedy Levying of Soldiers, for an intended Expedition against Canada" (1759), "An Act to prevent Soldiers and Seamen in his Majesty's Service fom being Arrested for Debt" (1760), and more. These types of demands by the British Crown on the local citizenry during the French and Indian War, especially the quartering acts, created tensions between the colonists and the Crown that grew over the next two decades into rebellion. Includes laws providing supplies, regulating trade, and preventing abuses to the Eastern Indians, and for laws "better regulating the Indians." In addition, there are laws covering debtors and creditors, roads, schools, militia, several acts governing livestock grazing, and more. Also includes the usual laws granting tax revenue to the colonial governor and the Treasury.         A report of some proceedings on the commission of oyer and terminer and gaol delivery for the trial of the rebels in the year 1746 in the county of Surry [sic], and of other Crown cases. To which are added discourses upon a few branches of the Crown law.

Dublin: Printed for Sarah Cotter 8vo (20.3 cm, 8"). xii, 412, [16] pp.. 1763 First Irish edition, following the Oxford first of the preceding year: one of the most authoritative and scholarly of such reports of the time, accompanied by examinations of treason, homicide, accessories, the writings of Lord Hale, etc. Cotter's printing seems to have appeared in two variants, as per ESTC; in the present example, the catchword on p. 406 is "to." Cotter was the daughter of Joseph Cotter and successor to his printing business. She was active from 1757 to 1767 and published/printed law, technical and religious books, belle lettres, and a wide variety of other productions. The trial mentioned in the title refers to that of those arrested for participation in the Jacobite rising of 1745, an attempt by "Bonnie Prince Charlie" (i.e., Charles Edward Stuart) to regain the British throne. (He had timed his effort for a moment when much of the British military was occupied on the continent by the War of the Austrian Succession.) Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and blind-tooled tulip decorations between raised bands; hinges (inside) reinforced. Front pastedown and free endpaper each with one small early inked annotation (shelf and price?); first and last few leaves with offsetting to margins; pages generally mildly age-toned with a very few scattered light spots.

Oxoni: E typographeo Clarendoniano 8vo in 4s (23.5 cm, 9.25"). [4], 676 pp.. 1763 Sole octavo printing of the Greek New Testament using Baskerville type (i.e., Greek type that Baskerville designed and cut himself); and indeed this pleasingly was printed from the only set of Baskerville type that survives to this day, still at Oxford's Clarendon Press. The text was based on the Mill edition of the Greek N.T.; Darlow and Moule notes that while the text "generally reproduces that of Mill . . . Reuss notes seven variations." => An important example of 18th-century fine printing of the Bible. This copy retains its half-title. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Contemporary acid-stained calf, rebacked some time ago with morocco, spine with gilt-stamped title and publication information; edges and extremities rubbed, sides and spine with small scuffs. New endpapers with pencilled annotations; back pastedown with California bookseller's small ticket. No library markings. Title-page with tiny nick in upper edge.
