Mary Katherine Goddard
Perhaps the only example of her autograph in private hands, and a uniquely significant autograph Perhaps the most influential woman of the Revolutionary War era, she actively espoused the patriot cause In 1762, 22 year old William Goddard opened the first newspaper in Providence, Rhode Island, and the next year began publishing the annual West's Almanack. A few years later his sister Mary Katherine Goddard and mother Sarah Goddard came to join him. Mary Katherine forewent many of the usual activities for young ladies to work as a typesetter, printer, and journalist. Although the younger William was ostensibly in charge, he traveled a great deal, and it was his sister and mother who were the true publishers of these publications. The mother/daughter team took over altogether in 1766 when William went to Philadelphia, and the women made their print shop a hub of activity at a time when newspapers exerted great political influence. They added a bookbindery, and in addition to the Gazette and almanac, published pamphlets and occasionally books. They were the first woman publishers in America. In Philadelphia William began another print shop and newspaper, the Pennsylvania Chronicle and Universal Advertiser. The women joined him there in 1768 and helped run the paper. After Sarah Goddard's 1770 death, Mary Katherine kept the business running, as William was frequently jailed for public outbursts and rabble-rousing articles in the paper. His sister's contrasting business ability is clear in that, according to William Goddard's biographer, "the shop [became] one of the larg … [Click Below for Full Description]

LA CHALOTAIS, Louis-René de Caradeuc de;
[Click Below for Full Description]

Rousseau, Jean Jaques.
Marc Michel Rey, 1762. [...] ('Chapitre I. Sujiet de ce premiere Livre', p. 3). T.A. The world famous tales and fables of Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695), neatly printed in verse, are joined by a 'Dissertation sur la Joconde' by Nicolas Boileau Despreaux (1636-1711); and the best work of the great illustrators & engravers Charles Eisen (1720-1778) and Pierre-Philippe Choffard (1730-1809). Justly considered one of the greatest examples of French rococo illustration. The Fermiers Generaux, an entrepreneurial financial association responsible for gathering and banking certain kinds of taxes, commissioned this edition of La Fontaine's zesty tales. Determined that the book should be the best of its kind, they allowed their agent, the Chevalier d'Agincourt, unlimited resources. It is still provocative to consider that patronage of the arts by this new plutocracy produced the greatest monument and triumph of this renowned age of illustration. BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. BINDING
Cambridge, Printed by John Baskerville, Printer to the University; by whom they are sold, and by B. Dod, Bookseller, in Ave-Mary Land, London. 1762. Large 8vo, 228 x 144 mms., 344 unnumbered leaves, collating a-b8 c4 B-2S8 2T4, with printed slip over price and below imprint (but rubbed and obscured) contemporary red morocco, with a Greek vase and floral motif border, gilt oval on each cover surrounding back and green oval, with the Christogram JHS in gilt, spine ornately gilt in compartments to a lozenge motif, all edges gilt; a very good copy with some minor wear to binding, but somewhat wormed in the 4th spine compartment. With the red morocco bookplate M. H. Lee and the library shelf label of Porkington Library on the front paste-down marbled end-paper. This conforms to what Gaskell 19 describes as the third edition, but the printed slip over the price below the imprint is usually found in the 12mo edition of 1762 (Gaskell 20). Baskerville printed an edition of 4000 copies. The Porkington Library label is presumably Brogyntyn, or Porkington, in Somerset, home of the Orsmby-Gore family from 1815 and abandoned in 1985. Nevertheless, the early history of the library at Brogyntyn is obscure. Some of the family had collected early printed books during the nineteenth century but this does not acc … [Click Below for Full Description]
