Rousseau J J
Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey, 1762. (4), VIII, 323, (1) pp. 8to (192*126 mm). []2 *4 A-V8 X2. 1st edition, 3rd and final issue. Recent brown quartercalf with brown marbled boards and gilt title on spine. New plain endpapers. Edges sprinkled blue (not recent). A fresh, crisp and unpressed copy. Our copy of the Contract Social conforms to Dufour's Type B issue, with the title-page having the vignette of Liberty seated and the contentious section on marriage in the second corrected state. The publishing history of the Contract Social is a complicated one. When the press was set up and the first copies already printed, Rousseau received a proof of the title-page which he disliked. He had also decided to tone down his note on marriage where he criticised the monopoly of the Catholic clergy. He therefore instructed his publisher, Rey, to change the title-page and the final section. Printing and the Mind of Man 207; Dufour 133; Tchemerzine V 543. See also Leigh, Unsolved Problems in the Bibliography of J.-J. Rousseau, Cambridge, 1990, who refines the printing history to 3 issues: (1) original title and note on marriage, (2) same note omitted and (3) new title and note omitted. 3 copies in NCC (Leiden missing halftitle (autopsy), Utrecht and UVA)..

Bon exemplaire. Une coiffe et quatre coins usés. [Attributes: First Edition]

Gray, Thomas
, 1762. 1762. 4 pp. 4to. Generally fine (old repairs to address leaves of 1760 letters. Custom red morocco slipcase and chemise. 4 pp. 4to. 'a Concert of Poultry under every window'. Three lively letters from 26 July 1760, August 1760, and 19 July 1762, addressed to Rev. Mr. James Brown, master of Pembroke, giving news of Gray's comings and goings, some gossip and fine turns of phrase. Brown, a friend from Gray's undergraduate days (long past), was a frequent correspondent and one with whom the poet had long ties of friendship. In the letter dated 26 July 1760, Gray notes, "This very night Billy Robinson consummates his good fortune, she has 10,000 £ in her pocket, & a Brother unmarried with at least as much. He is infirm, & the first Convoy, that sails, they all three set out together for Naples to pass a year or two." In the letter dated to August 1760, Gray warns of a visit to Cambridge and writes, "pray let Black make an universal rummage of cobwebs, & massacre all spiders old & young, that live behind window shutters, & books. As to airing, I hear Dick Forester has done it." The letter of 19 July 1762, written from Old Park, in Co. Durham, the residence of another long time Cambridge friend, Thomas Wharton, suggests the pleasures of country life: "there is a Concert of Poultry under every window, we take in no newspaper or magazine, but the cream & butter is beyond compare." A choice group of letters from the poet. Provenance: Arthur Houghton

LA FONTAINE, Jean de (1621-1695)
Amsterdam [ie. Paris], 1762. Fermiers-generaux Edition 2 vols 8vo,Vol. 1. xiv, (2), 268, (4) [last leaf blank], portrait of La Fontaine, 39 eng. plates, Vol.2. (2), viii, (2), 306, (6) [last leaf blank], 16 pp, portrait of Eisen, 41 eng. plates, (but a total of 86 plates; see below) culs-de-lampe by Choffard, text and plates ruled in red throughout, occasional very slight foxing, bound, circa 1780, in blue morocco, gilt multi-roll borders of dots, greek key pattern, and flowers, spines gilt in six compartments, turn-ins gilt, doublures of pink watered silk with borders in gilt, a.e.g, pink silk ribbon markers, by Alexis Pierre Bradel, with his ticket in Vol.1.A fine copy of this celebrated edition, Eisen's master-work and generally acclaimed the most beautiful illustrated French book of the eighteenth century. It was commissioned, no expense spared, by the Fermiers genereaux, a group of powerful tax-collectors, and such was the rigour of control over the illustrations that some twenty plates were rejected and had to be re-engraved. These 'figures refusées' are very occasionally found and the present copy has no less than six of them (i.e. 'La servante justifiee', 'Les Oies de Fr. Philippe', L'Oraison de S. Julien', 'Le Remois', 'Le Diable en Enfer', and 'Le Tableau'). They demonstrate unequivocally the superiority of the new plates. The plates 'Le Cas de Conscience' and 'Le Diable de Papefiguiere' are both in the 'decouverte' state. The binder's ticket in vol. 1 reads "Relié par BRADEL l'Aine Succeseur du Sr. Derome le Jeune son Oncle, Rue St. Jacques, Hotel de l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mary Katherine Goddard
Perhaps the only example of her autograph in private hands, and a uniquely significant autograph Perhaps the most influential woman of the Revolutionary War era, she actively espoused the patriot cause In 1762, 22 year old William Goddard opened the first newspaper in Providence, Rhode Island, and the next year began publishing the annual West's Almanack. A few years later his sister Mary Katherine Goddard and mother Sarah Goddard came to join him. Mary Katherine forewent many of the usual activities for young ladies to work as a typesetter, printer, and journalist. Although the younger William was ostensibly in charge, he traveled a great deal, and it was his sister and mother who were the true publishers of these publications. The mother/daughter team took over altogether in 1766 when William went to Philadelphia, and the women made their print shop a hub of activity at a time when newspapers exerted great political influence. They added a bookbindery, and in addition to the Gazette and almanac, published pamphlets and occasionally books. They were the first woman publishers in America. In Philadelphia William began another print shop and newspaper, the Pennsylvania Chronicle and Universal Advertiser. The women joined him there in 1768 and helped run the paper. After Sarah Goddard's 1770 death, Mary Katherine kept the business running, as William was frequently jailed for public outbursts and rabble-rousing articles in the paper. His sister's contrasting business ability is clear in that, according to William Goddard's biographer, "the shop [became] one of the larg … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rousseau, Jean Jaques.
Marc Michel Rey, 1762. [...] ('Chapitre I. Sujiet de ce premiere Livre', p. 3). T.A. Dufour, Recherches bibliographiques sur les œuvres imprimées de J.-J. Rousseau, 1925, no. 133; Printing and the Mind of Man, 207
