Cambridge: printed by J. Baskerville, printer to the University. 12mo, 198 leaves; this copy with the cancellans title page, the last line reading "Price Five Shillings, unbound" and without the star & lozenge slip pasted over the last line; bound with: Brady, N., A New Version of the Psalms of David... Birmingham: printed by John Baskerville, 1762, 52 leaves; together in contemporary full green goat, fancy gilt borders on covers with floral devices in the corners, enclosing a central gilt lozenge, gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, unlettered, a.e.g.; the binding is darkened and slightly worn, and 2 old bookseller descriptions are tipped in at the front; all else quite good and sound. An old note in pencil on the verso of the front free endpaper proclaims this to be an "Irish binding." "Baskerville printed three octavo editions of The Book of Common Prayer. The first, which appeared in 1760, was set in long lines of Great Primer. There were two impressions, one with and the other without a border round each page. .. cancelled title pages were substituted later in 1760 and in 1761... The second edition appeared later in 1760. .. and two impressions were printed, with and without borders. It was first published at 7s. 6d, but in 1761 the price was raised to 8s.6d. The Royal Prayers are found in the second state only, as cancels... The third and final edition was published in 1762, set in long lines of Great Primer, without borders" (Gaskell). Bunyan, J.; [James Burdwood]
London: Printed for W. Johnston, 1762. Early Edition. Bound in modern full red crushed morocco, gilt stamping to the boards and spine, raised bands, black morocco spine label, marbled end papers. A small 12mo volume (pages 139 x 80 mm) collating: [iii]-x, 11-143, [1]; complete as to text, lacking the portrait. While Bunyan is marked on the title page as the author, many scholars believe that James Burdwood was really the author. First published in 1690, all early editions are quite scarce in the auction record and in institutional holdings. "A slim devotional volume on the causes and cures of 'heart trouble.' [The author] arranges his book by topics such as suffering, loss, and sorrow, and he exhorts readers to put all their trust in Jesus to provide comfort and consolation. The text includes verses to illustrate these points. He encourages readers to believe in the Lord's promises and faithfully meditate upon them, declaring how sweet the 'glimpses and glances' of divine love are" (Woychuk). Heart's Ease serves to provide readers with a reminder not only of divine love, but of the presence of a Puritan community that shares this same faith in salvation. It urges readers to remember to turn to scriptures as a means for keeping contact with their God. "The literature of Puritanism was the soul of its ecclesiastical body and the blood of its political veins" (White). This text, which has been variously attributed to John Bunyan and James Burdwood, is a testament to this important tradition which the Puritans drew upon in times of difficulty and persecution.

ROUSSEAU, J.J.
Amsterdam, Chez Jean Néaulme, 1762. 12mo. Bound in four very nice later, uniform full mottled calf pastiche-bindings with raised bands to gilt spines and inner gilt dentelles. A lovely copy with only occasional minor browning. (4), VII, (1), 358 pp. + (4), 270 pp. + (4), 256 pp. + (4), 342 pp. + 5 engraved plates in all. Early 12mo-edition, from the same year as the first printing, of the seminal work that constitutes the climax of Rousseau's genius as well as the most important work on education since Plato. Rousseau, Jean Jaques
Amsterdam, Marc Michel Rey, 1762 (MDCCLXII), Edizione originale, emissione «B».
[Click Below for Full Description]

GEORGE III. [PYE (Henry James)], inter alia. BROWNE (Josephus), editor
Oxonii E Typographeo Clarendoniano. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Folio, 367 x 233 mms., pp. [174], contemporary red morocco, two gilt panels on covers within gilt border, spine ornately gilt in compartments to a regal motif, all edges gilt, Dutch end-papers, bookplates of John Peyto Verney, Lord Willoughby de Boke (1738 - 1816) and Robert John Verney Lord Willoughby de Broke (1762 - 1820) on the front paste-down end-paper; front hinge slightly cracked, very slight wear to corners, but generally a fine and attractive copy This collection of poems, mostly in Latin, but including others in English, Greek, Hebrew, and Welsh, was published to celebrate the birth of King George III and Queen Charlotte's son, the future George IV. Henry James Pye (1745 - 1813; poet laureate, 1790 - 1813) published his first poem in this volume, in English, and there are several other, minor versifiers that can be identified, e. g., James Merrick and Professor Joseph Spence, Professor of Poetry at Oxford 1728 - 1738. An intriguing story of Spence's poem, which appears on the recto and verso of H2 is recounted in The London Magazine for 1822, pages 577 - 580, in which it is asserted that Spence's original poem was deemed unsuitable and verses by William Lowth were used instead. GRONOVIUS, Johannes Fridericus (1686-1762); and John CLAYTON (1693-1773)
Leiden, 1762. 4to. [12], 176, [8]pp. Engraved folding map. Errata on verso terminal leaf. Contemporary manuscript annotations throughout. Uncut. Contemporary flexible blue paper covered boards, expertly rebacked to style. Housed in a blue morocco backed box. Provenance: J. Davis Second and best edition of the first Virginian flora, based on specimens collected by John Clayton at the beginning of the 18th century; this edition the first to include a map of Virginia. The first London edition of 1739- 43 of Gronovius' work, based on Clayton's specimens, comprised the first systematic flora of Virginia and was responsible for establishing many new genera. John Clayton had an estate on the Piankatank River in Mathews County, spent much time in collecting Virginia plants, particularly in the middle tidewater region. Clayton corresponded with J.F. and L.T. Gronovius, Linnæus, Kalm, Collinson, and Bartram. "Because Clayton's herbarium specimens formed the basis of this work, it is often asserted that it should be called 'Clayton's Flora Virginica,' but the final identification of the specimens, the science and system of the book, were largely the work of Gronovius" (Hunt). The map is "one of the earliest botanical maps of any region of the world" (Maps in Virginia). The map further documents Clayton's travels, "which show that he was seldom north of the Rappahannock or south of the James, and that his knowledge of the mountains did not extend beyond the Blue Ridge. He was thorough, however, in his exploration of the middle Tidewater districts, and recent botanica … [Click Below for Full Description]

[...] ('Chapitre I. Sujiet de ce premiere Livre', p. 3). Dufour, Recherches bibliographiques sur J.-J.
In Émile, Rousseau poses an entirely new approach to education and the upbringing of children. His thoughts were exceedingly controversial, the work was burnt by the executioner immediately after its first appearance and Rousseau had to flee the country due to a warrant for his arrest.
[Click Below for Full Description]

ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques)
Dufour, 195. Sénelier, 768. [Attributes: First Edition]
