Birmingham: printed by John Baskerville, for R. and J. Dodsley [...] 1761. 8vo., pp. [ii], iii, [i], lxxviii, 204, [xxviii] + engraved frontispiece and 15 plates (with usual errors in pagination). Larkins' at head and 'For E.W. [Stibbs]' at tail. Collected by Robert Dodsley, also partly translated and partly written by him. Includes de Meziriac's 'The Life of Esop', translated into English and annotated, and 'An Essay on Fable' by Robert Dodsley. 'Although at least thirteen printers had a hand in producing Dodsley's volumes, John Hughs seems to have been his primary printer, and the latter sometimes farmed out work to William Bowyer junior and William Strahan. John Baskerville printed Dodsley's Fables of Aesop, and the bookseller acted as the Birmingham printer's London agent for the sale of his Horace … [Click Below for Full Description]

Adam Fitz-Adam [pseud. Edward Moore] [Humphry Repton interest]
R & J Dodsley, London, 1761. Third edition, four volumes (complete). Full leather binding, with five raised bands and contrasting leather title label to spine. Each 16.5 × 10cm. Pagination: Vol 1: 327pp + index, v2: 323pp + index, v3: 312pp + index, and v4: 338pp + index and list of contributors. This set belonged to Humphry Repton (1752¿1818), the famous English landscape gardener. Each volume carries his bookplate which he has overlaid on another belonging to a Roger Smith. He has also handwritten an index to each volume to the ffep, along with other annotations. Volume 1: bookplate and 2pp manuscript index. This copy also has previous owner's reference mark and name in ink to the ffep. Rather tantalisingly, the rear endpaper has a faint doodle in pencil of what could be a garden ornament. There are also a few pencil annotations to the title page and margins which appear to be in Repton's hand. Volume 2: bookplate and 2pp manuscript index. Also with a few pencil manuscript annotations to the margins. Vol 3: Partial bookplate (Repton's bookplate has been mostly removed revealing the name plate of Roger Smith, with 1pp manuscript index. Numerical pencil annotations to rear endpaper, unknown hand. Vol 4: bookplate and 2pp manuscript index. Pencil annotations to final index of contributors and endpapers, appear to be in Repton's hand. A comparison with online copies of Repton's Red Books and garden plans indicate that the handwritten is by the same person. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1761 1st ed History of Russian Empire Peter the Great by VOLTAIRE Folding MAPS While Voltaire was known most-known for his historical works, this history of the Russian Empire under Peter the Great is an excellent work of French and Russian history. This particular edition is translated into German. François-Marie Arouet (1694 - 1778), known by his nom de plume Voltaire was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher famous for his wit, his attacks on the established Catholic Church, and his advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and separation of church and state. Voltaire was a versatile writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including plays, poems, novels, essays, and historical and scientific works. He wrote more than 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books and pamphlets. Peter the Great (1672 - 1725) ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire from 1682 until his death, jointly ruling before 1696 with his elder half-brother, Ivan V. Through a number of successful wars he expanded the Tsardom into a much larger empire that became a major European power. He led a cultural revolution that replaced some of the traditionalist and medieval social and political systems with ones that were modern, scientific, westernized, and based on The Enlightenment. Peter's reforms made a lasting impact on Russia and many institutions of Russian government traced their origins to his reign. Outer margins of e/ps. and title browned, some occ. foxing. Inner hinge visible but sound. The whole contained in a purpose made clam-shell marbled box with leather lettering piece. Norton 1. He let Dr. Maty of the British Museum read it and on gaining approval revised and completed it in 1759. It was only published due to his fathers urging. The dedication to his father is both sincere and touching. The book, mostly due to being written in French, was more successful abroad than in England. The publishers covered the costs of producing the book and took the profits, Gibbon retained the copyright and received a number of free copies. According to Norton 42 copies were made available to Gibbon. 21 copies were presented by the author to several eminent characters in England and France, one was presented to the Duke of York and 20 were given by the author to his friends in Lausanne. This copy is one of these 42. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Printed on fine clean writing-paper. ¶ These two separate works were issued by the same printer at the same time, but are independent treatises. They both remain fundamental texts of Siberian scholarship, and both are some of the first descriptions at all of the areas concerned. First issued in Paris 1761 together with an atlas. Chappe: second edition of his work. Kracheninnikow: the third edition, but the first translated directly from the Russian and approved by a member of the Academy in St. Petersbourg. The first French, the first English and the first German editions were only issued in abridged form. The first Russian edition appeared in 1755. Kracheninnikow joined the Russian scientific expedition to East Siberia, lead by Gmelin, and he was the only member of the expedition to penetrate Kamtchatka; he stayed there for four years. The work contains a detailed description of the North-east Coast of America, Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands and thus constitutes one of the first descriptions at all of these parts of the world. Binninger, Caspar:

Printed for Robert Smith at the sign of the Gilt Bible, Salt mercat, 1761. If you need a lift, just read the title here. This is an => apparently unrecorded Glasgow printing of Johnson's famous and popular romance of St. George, St. Andrew, St. Patrick, St. Denis, St. James Boanerges, St. Anthony the Lesser, and St. David (respectively the patron saints of England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, and Wales). Powerr; on the final blank page (19th-century hands) of Frances Cowley, Charles Cowley, and John Howe Booth. Most recently in the children's book collection of Albert A.
