[London], 1761 [but later?]. [London],, 1761 [but later?].. Polychromed carved wooden panel, inscribed at the top “GRII 1761 H.M. Dockyard Chatham Charts Room”. A sign presumably intended to fit above the doorway for the Charts Room at Chatham Dockyard in Kent. Decorated with a dramatic sea-battle between French and British warships; at the top is a globe, dedicated to George II (1683-1760), and dated 1761, flanked by dolphins. The borders of the sign, with a windhead at each lower corner, are carved to look like rope - the dockyard ropery was a centre of rope-making from 1618 - each ship needing approximately 30 miles of rope, 20 of which were used to rig the sails. Chatham was the single-most important dockyard in Britain, established in 1547 when the Royal Navy rented two storehouses on ‘Jyllingham Water', on the River Medway, at Sunne Hard. By 1570 full dockyard facilities were concentrated below Chatham Church. The first ship, the Merlin, slipped the docks in 1579, followed by Queen Elizabeth I's warship the Sunne, in 1586. In 1618 the dockyard moved downstream to its current location, well placed to support the Royal Navy through a series of trade wars with the Dutch that were mostly fought in the English Channel and North Sea. Many famous ships were built at Chatham before it closed for good in 1984, including the HMS Victory, Horatio Nelson's flagship.

MORGAGNI, Giovanni Battista.
Venice: Remondini, 1761. First edition. First edition, first issue, an exceptional copy, completely untouched in the original printer's interim-boards, of "one of the most important [works] in the history of medicine" (Garrison & Morton). "After Antonio Benivieni (1443-1502), Giovanni Battista Morgagni is considered the founder of pathological anatomy. His 'De sedibus', regarded as one of the most important books in the history of medicine, established a new era in medical research" (Norman). "Morgagni's contribution to the understanding of disease may well rank with the contributions of Vesalius in anatomy and Harvey in physiology" (Heirs of Hippocrates). "On the basis of direct examination and records of some 700 post mortem dissections, he advanced the procedure of basing diagnosis, prognosis and treatment on a detailed and comprehensive knowledge of the anatomical conditions of common diseases. In the above volumes, some of the cases are given with a precision and details hardly surpassed in medical history. His proposal was a shift of emphasis from the traditional 'nature' of a disease to its anatomical 'seat'. It combined the approach of anatomist and pathologist, making their special knowledge available to the diagnostician" (Dibner). Due to this work, "Morgagni may thus be considered to be the founder of pathological anatomy" (DSB). "Rudolf Virchow epitomized Giovanni Battista Morgagni's influence on the development of modern medicine when he wrote, 'The full consequences of what he worked out were harvested in London and Paris, in Vienna and in Berlin. And thus we … [Click Below for Full Description]

Engravings take up most of the pages. Overall in good condition with wear and soiling. There are pencil marks throughout along with some small sketches. Most are on the rear or blank sides of the engravings but a couple marks are on the engravings and one of the human form in particular has had some red coloring applied. All marks appear very old. Signature of Werner in 1772 on the front, first title page and a second Werner on the second page. There are no pages before title page or after the last engraving of the second et.
