Robins, Benjamin.
London: Edited and published by James Wilson MD Printed for J NourseTwo volumes complete , 1761. First Edition. Two volumes. Octavo, original tan polished calf nicely rebacked in old-style calf, calf labels, xlvi, [ii], 341, [iii ads] pp. + [vi], 7-380 pp. Two plates and numerous diagrams. Benjamin Robins (1707-1751) was a scientist, mathematician and military engineer whose pioneering work on gunnery influenced the development of rifled gun barrels, the study of ballistics, and 18th century British artillery. This copy was formerly owned by the physicist and inventor Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford (1753-1814). The reverse of the title in Volume I bears a holograph inscription reading, “Presented to the Royal Institution / of Great Britain by Count Rumsford / 23 March 1801.” The title itself bears the red stamp of the Royal Institution, with a contemporary holograph note indicating that this copy was a “Duplicate sold 1806.” Born in Massachusetts, Thompson served in the loyalist army during the American Revolution as first a Lieutenant Colonel, and later a full Colonel. While working with the British army in America, he conducted experiments to measure the force of gunpowder. Thompson is better known, however, for his work after the war in the field of thermodynamics and for his improvements in chimney and furnace designs. The set was later owned by Edward Neville da Costa Andrade (1887-1971), with both volumes bearing his bookplate. Andrade was an English physicist primarily known for his work in determining the wavelength of a type of gamma rad … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORGAGNI, Giovanni Battista
Venice: Remondini, 1761. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE. Separate titles to each volume. Frontispiece portrait by Jean Renard (i.e. Giovanni Volpato, 1733-1803), engraved title vignettes. Contemporary annotation on first blank more extensive annotations (possibly notes dealing with medical diagnoses and remedies for specific patients) on last blank. Beautiful contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments; minor spotting and browning. First edition, second issue (the sole difference apparently being that the first issue title page is in red and black), of one of the most important works in the history of medicine. The five books include the written records of Morgagni's investigations and an extensive series of post mortem which he performed himself. These records of dissections are given with precision and exhaustiveness of detail. By comparing the clinical symptoms with the post mortem findings, Morgagni laid the foundations of pathological anatomy. "The books include a number of brilliant descriptions of new diseases, some of which have remained classics until our own day, particularly those of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, and throat. He described syphilitic tumours in the brain, recorded a case of heart-block ("Stokes Adams Disease"), identified the clinical features of pneumonia with consolidation of the lungs, described lesions in angina pectoris, acute yellow atrophy of the liver, tuberculosis of the kidney, etc." (PMM). Morgagni (1682-1771), professor of anatomy at Padua, was an expert clinician and the first to identify the symptomatic condition associat … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROUSSEAU, Jean Jacques (1712-1778)
Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey, 1761. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 6 volumes in bound in 2, 12mo (157 x 97mm). Vols. I: 407pp. II: 319pp. III: 255pp. IV: 331pp. V: 311pp. VI: 312pp. (includes advertisements at end of Vol. I-III and IV, without errata leaves). Half-title: Julie, ou, La nouvelle Héloise. Title pages printed in red and black with engraved ornaments. 12 full-page engraved plates illustrating the letters. Contemporary calf, red edges; (clean; calf slightly scuffed). First Edition. Rousseau’s epistolary novel, later known as “Julie, or the New Héloïse,” was first published in 1761 by Marc-Michel Rey in Amsterdam. The novel’s title (translated “Letters from two lovers living in a small town at the foot of the Alps”) is a nod to the history of Héloïse d’Argenteuil and Pierre Abélard, a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was initially put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel, a philosophical theory about authenticity, namely “secret principles” and feelings, and being constituent of one’s core identity, permeated through it. Rousseau explored autonomy and authenticity as moral values and in turn created in Julie a story of temptation, sin and redemption that was easily relatable. According to Historian Robert Darnton, there were at least 70 editions in print before 1800. So immensely popular, publishers could not print copies fast enough so they rented the book out by the day and even by the hour. The work stirred a strong emotional response from readers and … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Paris), 1761. viii, 148 pp. 4to. Modern half morocco, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering, marbled boards. GIOBERT (Jean-Antoine)
Belle lettre scientifique. ».

1761. 95, [1] pp. 8vo, cont. vellum over boards (lower portion of spine neatly repaired at an early date, some occasional light browning and foxing as usual with this book). Vienna: J.T. Trattner, 1761. First edition of the first book to suggest percussion of the chest as a diagnostic measure, "one of the greatest of all medical classics."-Heirs of Hippocrates 954. "With the introduction of percussion of the chest, which offered a new and dependable method of diagnosing diseases of the heart and lungs in living persons, Leopold Auenbrugger made the first advance in physical diagnosis since the age of Hippocrates. The son of an innkeeper, Auenbrugger had learned as a boy how to establish the level of wine in a cask by thumping the barrel?Applying the same technique to the human chest, he noticed that different sounds - tympanic, dull, or obscure, were produced when there was underlying disease of the heart or lungs in the interior of the chest. He verified his diagnoses by experiments on cadavers and by postmortems."-Grolier Club, One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine, 45. At first Auenbrugger's discovery attracted little attention, but he lived to see Corvisart's classic translation of the book in 1808, after which the value of percussion was universally recognized. Very good copy. This copy is of the second issue, with the errata on the final page. Bookplates of Piergiorgio Borio. ? Garrison-Morton 2672. Lilly, Notable Medical Books, p. 127. BOCCACCIO Giovanni
S.l., s.t. Gamba, n. 1876; Olschki, Boccaccio, n. 22. Su Francesco Mannelli (Firenze, 1356 ca. - 1427), secondogenito di Amaretto, cfr. A. Terzi, in D.B.I., … [Click Below for Full Description]
