"RESIDENCIA" TRIAL OF THE GOVERNOR OF CHILE - A BEAUTIFUL LIMA IMPRINT. Folio; modern hard wrappers. The residencia trial involved the placing under consideration of the authorities the actions of functionaries when leaving their posts for any reason; accounts were examined and salaries were withheld until it was shown that all was in order; such occurred in this case when Amat was elevated to Viceroy of Peru; curiously, it includes poetic praise at the beginning and end of the imprint; the quality of printing of this work is remarkable, especially the title page framed by 4 types of ornamental irons, entirely unusual in this press. 2 copies in OCLC. 11 pp páginas [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Joinville Jehan (de), Nangis Guillaume (de)
Imprimerie Royale, Parigi, 1761.

Anon.
Vienna, February 2nd . 1761 - Copper engraving (Very Good, uncut margins, remainder of other platemark in the lower blank margins) 58 x 44 cm (22.8 x 17.3 inches). An extremely rare 18th century broadside in Old Slavic Church Cyrillic, printed in Vienna, showcases an icon, made by the bishop of the Serbian Orthodox church, Arsenije Radivojevi_, for the only Serbian church in Slovakia. This extremely rare broadside is a copper engraved copy of an Orthodox painted icon, and showcases an image of young Virgin Mary, accompanied by her parents St. Anna and St. Joachim to the presentation to the temple to St. Zacharias, followed by a group of angels. The interior of the temple is decorated with Baroque rocaille ornaments and an image of the Annunciation in the upper part. The text below is written in the old Slavic Church Cyrillic script and is ornated with an image of the Serbian church in Komárno in today’s Slovakia. The painted icon was ordered by a bishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Eparchy of Buda, Arsenije Radivojevi_ (1759-1769) for the decoration of the Serbian church in Komárno, consecrated to the Presentation in the Temple. The Eparchy of Buda (Budapest) in the 18th century covered the Serbian Othodox church on the territory of Hungay, which included parts of today’s Croatia, Slovakia and Czech Republic. The beginnings of this only Serbian Orthodox Church in Slovakia go to the year 1756, when the bishop of the Eparchy of Buda, Dionisije Novakovi_, started building the church. In 1759 Radivojevi_ took over the patronage over the construction, which wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHOISEUL, E.F. DE.)
A Paris, De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1761. (2), iv, 194 pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt with raised bands, red label with gilt lettering, joint with short split at head and foot, lightly rubbed, extremities slightly shaved. Sabin 47516; Howes M.507; JFBL C309; Conlon 61:583; Beinecke Lesser Antilles Collection, 230. First edition. A document of great importance, marking the important beginning of the negociations which later resulted in the British securing much of North America. Deals also with Treaty of Paris which ended the French-Indian War, the cession of Canada, limits of Louisiana, Cape Breton, etc.Choiseul, Comte de Stainville and later Duc de Choiseul, had served as ambassador in Rome and in Vienna when he was appointed Secretary for War in 1761 and two years later Secretary for Marine. He was therefore the statesman who directed France through the closing scenes of the Seven Years War. A man of energy and ability, he could not save his country from defeat, but at least he perceived the defects of her military and naval organisation, defects which he did much to remedy. It was mainly by his reforms that France proved such a formidable adversary in the War of the American Revolution. -With small library stamp (Bib. du Dist. d'Amiens) on the title-page. Robins, Benjamin.
London: Edited and published by James Wilson MD Printed for J NourseTwo volumes complete , 1761. First Edition. Two volumes. Octavo, original tan polished calf nicely rebacked in old-style calf, calf labels, xlvi, [ii], 341, [iii ads] pp. + [vi], 7-380 pp. Two plates and numerous diagrams. Benjamin Robins (1707-1751) was a scientist, mathematician and military engineer whose pioneering work on gunnery influenced the development of rifled gun barrels, the study of ballistics, and 18th century British artillery. This copy was formerly owned by the physicist and inventor Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford (1753-1814). The reverse of the title in Volume I bears a holograph inscription reading, “Presented to the Royal Institution / of Great Britain by Count Rumsford / 23 March 1801.” The title itself bears the red stamp of the Royal Institution, with a contemporary holograph note indicating that this copy was a “Duplicate sold 1806.” Born in Massachusetts, Thompson served in the loyalist army during the American Revolution as first a Lieutenant Colonel, and later a full Colonel. While working with the British army in America, he conducted experiments to measure the force of gunpowder. Thompson is better known, however, for his work after the war in the field of thermodynamics and for his improvements in chimney and furnace designs. The set was later owned by Edward Neville da Costa Andrade (1887-1971), with both volumes bearing his bookplate. Andrade was an English physicist primarily known for his work in determining the wavelength of a type of gamma rad … [Click Below for Full Description]
