Rarissimo. Etching and engraving, circa 176. Likely been exemplary in the thirtheenth state of twenty - seven, dating back to 1767. A very good impression, printed in brown ink on laid paper with watermark contemporary "double encircled fluers de lys", trimmed to the platemark or with thin margins, light oxidation and paper folds visible on the reverse, otherwise in good condition. Common practice of many publishers in the eighteenth century, was to draw up and give the prints catalogs or price lists - prices of graphic works offered for sale, for the purpose of advertising them, facilitate their orders and obtain subscriptions. Piranesi was not limited to make a simple written catalog, but actually illustrated one, better known as catalog the way, which he published for the first time in 1761. The occasion for the printing of the catalog was that of the new Palazzo Tomati, where he went to settle in 1761. The first catalog contained a list of the 59 views of the series Views of Rome, the list of published books and other prints made, that catalog was updated from time to time with the addition of new material for sale, producing a large number of different states, of which 27 are now known. The catalog recorded is a key element for the dating of the works of Piranesi, irreplaceable means of study and research, the analysis of which states can also determine the approximate all the late works of the artist. In the realization of this work, which is rightly regarded as yet another masterpiece, Piranesi mainly studies the decorative aspect that it had to take. The technique used is the same that we find in some of his books, of an architectural background he gives life to a trompe l'oeil effect, drawing pins that hold the cartouches containing some titles of his works. The first floor consists of ruins and fragments of sculpture, while the white space was intentionally added to later add other items. Copies of the catalog are considerably rarer than the other engravings of Piranesi, probably because of the limited edition, but also for the fact that the catalogs were considered advertising material so ephemeral, and not to be kept. Some of these, bearing engraved dedications to friends and patrons of the artist, while on others often are ink annotations to items published recently added by hand, often handwritten. Rare. Hind p. 6, Focillon 1, xiii/xxvii; K. Meyer - Haunton in Piranesi, Incisioni, Rami, Legature, Architetture, 4. Dimensioni: 405x295.

        Catalogo delle opere

1761. Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1761, firmata in lastra in alto a sinistra. Etching with engraving, circa 1761, signed on plate at upper left. Example presumably in the second state of twenty - seven, datable from 1761. Magnificent proof, printed with dark ink on contemporary laid paper without watermark, wide margins, in excellent conditions. There are various modifications: a view of the Pantheon has been added to the Vedute di Roma, the collection of the Carceri has been completed and includes sixteen plates, on sale at the price of 20 paoli and, finally, the Trofei di Ottaviano are now made up of ten sheets, on sale at the price of 23 paoli. Exceptionally beautiful example. Extremely rare. A common custom among many editors in the eighteenth century was to compile and print catalogues or price lists of the graphic works they sold with the promotional intent of advertising them, uphold orders and obtain subscriptions. Piranesi did not limit himself to a common written catalogue but even published an illustrated one, better known as the engraved catalogue, which he issued for the first time in 1761. This happened in the circumstance of his moving to new premises at the Tomati Palace. The first catalogue included the list of the fifty - nine views belonging to the collection Vedute di Roma, which he had created up to then, together with an inventory of other published books that featured his prints. This catalogue was constantly updated by adding new items that were put on sale, giving rise to a number of different states, of which twenty - seven are currently known. The engraved catalogue is of primary importance for the dating of Piranesi's works, an essential means of study and research as the analysis of its states allows the approximate chronological classification of all of the artist's later works. When creating this work, which is correctly considered as another of his masterpieces, Piranesi focused his studies on its decorative aspects. He used the same technique that can be found in some of his books, creating a trompe - l'oeil effect on an architectural background, depicting pins which seemed to fasten a number of cartouches with titles pertaining to his works. The foreground consisted of ruins and sculptural fragments while an additional white space was included on purpose to allow for the addition of new items in the future. The items included in this catalogue are considerably rarer than Piranesi's other engraving, probably because they were printed in a smaller number, as well as for the reason that they were considered as short - lived promotional material, and therefore were not preserved. Some of these bear dedications to the artist's friends and benefactors, while, on other ones, pen - written notes enumerating the latest items, often by the artist's own hand, can be seen.         I. B. Piranesii Lapides Capitolini sive fasti consvlares..

1761. Acquaforte e bulino, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Etching with engraving, signed at lower left. From the first edition, showing Piranesi's address. A fine proof, printed on contemporary laid paper with "circle and fleur - de - lis with letters BV" (Robison 14), wide margins, in perfect conditions. This work, of remarkable architectural fascination, exemplifies the volume's contents. For the composition of this print Piranesi was inspired by the critical edition of his friend Cantuccio Cantucci, keeper at the Kircherian museum and the artist's aide for his works of erudition. Lapides Capitolini A list of Roman magistrates from the times of the monarchy until the end of the reign of Augustus was sculpted on marble and fixed on a wall at the Roman Forum by mandate of the Roman historian Valerius Flaccus. These inscriptions were uncovered in fragmentary conditions in 1547 and placed at the Capitol, within an architectural setting of his own design, by Michelangelo. This minor work by Piranesi was finished in 1761 and published the following year, depicting the inscriptions in conformity with Michelangelo's arrangement. Furthermore, as in his earlier works, the artist did not restrict himself to simple duplication and depicted the plaques not as in reality, inserted into a wall, but representing them as if leaning on corbels or supported by clamps, therefore restoring an impression of their three - dimensionality, drawing attention on empty spaces, damaged sections, and chisel - marks, displaying them as ruins and fragments of an ancient and lost environment.

Vienne, Thomae Trattner 1761 - Vienne, Thomae Trattner, 1761. Auenbrugger was the son of an innkeeper, and legend has it that it was his experience thumping wine casks to determine their fullness that led him to attempt an analogous diagnostic technique on his patients. It is certain that he was 'aided in developing this diagnostic technique by his musical knowledge (he wrote the libretto for a comic opera by Antonio Salieri), which enabled him to perceive differences in tone when the chest was tapped. For seven years he had observed the changes in tone caused by the diseases of the lungs or the heart in patients at the Spanish Hospital, checking and controlling his findings by dissections of corpses and by experiments. In the Inventum novum he presented his findings . Auenbrugger’s method permitted the determination of disease-caused changes in the lungs and heart of a live patient and thus gave a new, dependable foundation to the diagnosis of chest diseases' (DSB). His discovery met with little enthusiasm among his peers, but shortly before his death Napoleon’s physician Jean Nicolas Corvisart published a French translation of the book, substantially enlarged with his own observations which finally led to its general acceptance by the medical community. Some foxins at the beginning and the end and a restoration in the inner margin from pages 17 to 33 with some lack of letters on 6 pages (see pictures). Garrison-Morton 2672 ; Grolier Medicine 45 ; Norman 81 ; Heirs of Hippocrates 954 ; DSB I, page 332-333. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rescrit de l'Empereur de la Chine.

      - S.l.n.d. [1761].

A View of the Church of Notre Dame de la Victoire; Built in Commemoration of the raising of the Siege in 1695, and destroyed in 1759

London: published by Richard Short, to be sold by Thomas Jefferys, 1761. Engraving by A. Benoist, after Short. Titled in French and English. Expert restoration. Sheet size: 14 1/4 x 20 7/8 inches. A fascinating and very rare print from "one of the finest sets of Canadian historical prints ever produced. They are invaluable as records of the effect of the British bombardment during the siege of Quebec. Their careful and detailed draughtsmanship shows internal evidence of their accuracy, and gives a faithful picture of the appearance of the city at the time of its surrender" (Jefferys, 'Samuel Collection' p.35) Richard Short was the purser of H.M.S. Prince of Orange, and served at the siege of Quebec in 1759. He was commanded to make a record of the city by Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Saunders KCB (whose engraved arms or crest appears in the legend beneath each image). Short's drawings were engraved by a number of well-known and highly talented London engravers and the results published by Short himself. The plates, according to Charles Jefferys, "reveal a highly intelligent choice of points of view, a skillful arrangement of lines and masses, and broad treatment of light and shade. In addition to their detailed realism, these engravings are admirable pictorial compositions." (op.cit. p.35). Above all they are the most accurate existing record of early Quebec in general, and in particular of the immediate aftermath of the devastating Naval bombardment of the city. "The engraving gives the church the name 'la Victoire'. Such was its original title, in recognition of the defeat of Phips in 1690. Later it was changed? to 'les Victoires', to commemorate also the destruction of the fleet of Sir Hovendon Walker and the consequent failure of the projected attack on Quebec in 1711" (op.cit. p.38).         An album of forty-nine botanical paintings on vellum. Drawings dated 1761-1782.

      - Large 4to (the mounts 390 x 330 mm, the vellum sheets 236 x 161 mm), comprising 49 original paintings in body- and watercolours on vellum, mounted on card within wash borders, the paintings captioned in ink; in contemporary red morocco, elaborate gilt panels on sides, gilt urns on spine, gilt edges, marbled endleaves, bookplate and shelf label of Kimbolton Castle on pastedown, spine labelled ‘Drawings’. A fine series of beautifully executed paintings of flowering plants in the style of Ehret, mostly exotic ornamentals fashionable in horticulture or plants recently introduced into cultivation. Elizabeth Montagu (1741-1832) was an accomplished botanical artist, who may have been taught by Peter Brown (fl 1758-99), court painter to the Prince of Wales, and probable pupil of Georg Dionysius Ehret. These paintings are highly skilled both artistically and technically and clearly show the influence of Ehret. One, ‘Optuntia vulgo herbariorum, the common Indian Fig, Apis violacea’, dated 1769, a large Opuntia cactus, features a violet-coloured bee. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Dictionnaire Portatif De La Langue Francoise Extrait Du Grand Dictionnaire De Pierre Richelet; George Washington's Copy - Together with A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenaeum

Chez Pierre Bruyset - Ponthus, Lyon 1761 - President George Washington's copy, with his bookplate which was restruck before 1863, from the original copper plate. "The inventory of Washington's books made at the time of his death.shows that his library then numbered about nine hundred volumes. These under his will became the property of his nephew Judge Bushrod Washington, who also inherited his papers and the Mansion House of Mount Vernon. Here Judge Washington lived and added to General Washington's library a part at least of his own books. In his will in 1826, he provided as follows: 'All the papers and letter books devised to me by my uncle, Gen'l Washington, as well as the books in my study, other than law books, I give to my nephew Geo. C. Washington; the books in the cases in the dining-room, I give to my nephew John A. Washington.' In the inventory of his estate are these items: In the dining-room, 468 vols. miscellaneous works left to John A. Washington, 658 vols. of miscellaneous works left to Geo. C. Washington, 1125 N. of miscel. Pamphlets left Geo. C. Washington, beside 169 vols. of State papers, 22 vols. of Journals of Congress and 649 vols. of Law Books, 22 law pamphlets. These latter were destined for Bushrod Washington Herbert , the son of a niece, in case he should be trained for the law. Mount Vernon was next occupied by John A. Washington. The books left to George C. Washington remained there for many years, but in 1847 or 1848, a considerable portion of them, perhaps all that remained, were sold to Henry Stevens, the bookseller. Mr. Stevens announced his intention of sending them over to the British Museum. To prevent this and to secure them for Boston a number of Boston and Cambridge men, particularly Prof. Jared Sparks, Prof. Andrews Norton, Mr. George Livermore, and Mr. Charles Eliot Norton.(raised $3,800 to purchase them from Stevens). This amount and $450 beside was collected, the Athenaeum itself contributing $500; and at a meeting of the subscribers it was voted to place the books permanently in the Boston Athenaeum. The remainder of Washington's library has been scattered, and no large number of his books now exists in any one place beside the Boston Athenaeum. What became of the rest of the books left to George C. Washington can only be conjectured. Those given to John A. Washington passed to his son John A. Washington, and then to his son Lawrence Washington, of Alexandria, Va.other sales have given an opportunity to book collectors to bid for books which once belonged to Washington. The titles of the Catalogues of these sales will be found on pp. 470-475 of this volume. A sale of books claiming to be from Washington's library, but having spurious book-plates, took place in Washington, in 1863." The present title is one of those. So the "spurious" bookplate was struck by the Washington family, from the original copper plate and placed into some of the books in the collection - so to call it "spurious" is a misnomer. The collection of General Washington, in the Boston Athenaeum contains 13 volumes with this bookplate - they were purchased in Washington in 1863 (see page 565 of "A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenaeum"). 12mo, 775 pages; contemporary calf, marbled end papers, red leather lettering piece on spine; all edges stained red. Internally very good; binding shows considerable wear. Bookplate of George Washington on front pastedown (a 19th century restrike from the original copper plate). Housed in a contemporary full leather box, with a slide-off top.
