Opera mineralia, sive de lapide philosophico, omnia, duobus libris comprehensa.Middelburg, Richard Schilders, 1600. 8vo. With dozens of small woodcut illustrations in the text. Contemporary vellum; in modern green half morocco slipcase and green cloth chemise.

      - Duveen, p. 300; Honeyman 1761 (this copy); Partington II, pp. 203-208 & item 1; STCN (5 copies). The first edition of any work by the mysterious Johannes Isaac Hollandus, a Latin translation of a German manuscript of his treatises on mineralogy, alchemy and the philosopher's stone, and especially on the use of metal oxides to colour stones and crystals to make fake gems and precious stones. The charming little woodcuts show distilling and other equipment.Little is known about Johannes Isaac Hollandus (active 1572-1610?), but the Görlitz astronomer Bartholomeus Scultetus had a German manuscript of some of his treatises on mineralogy that survives in the form of a copy made in Prague in 1572 and Ben Jonson's 1610 play The Alchemists refers to him apparently as still living. His name suggests he was a Dutchman living abroad, but if his father was called Isaac Hollandus, as has been claimed, he may have been born abroad in a Dutch family. With the red morocco bookplate of Robert Honeyman IV. In very good condition, with only a minor transparent stain at the head of the last few leaves and a small marginal rust hole in 1 leaf. Contemporary binding also very good.       [Nürnberg]:: Gedruckt von Christian de Launoy, 1761.. Two parts in one volume. 258 x 206 mm. 4to. [xvi], 202, [4] pp. 2 engraved allegorical frontispieces (first plate is hand-colored), title vignette, portrait of Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg, historiated initials, headpieces, tailpieces, 100 hand-colored engraved plates by Adam Wolfgang Winterschmidt, after drawings by Ledermüller, indexes; plates XIV and XXXVI margins torn (verso repaired with cellophane tape), plate LXXV torn and repaired (paper mounted on verso). Contemporary full mottled gilt-ruled calf, marbled endleaves; scar to upper cover, joints splitting, spine ends chipped, cords holding, corners showing. Ownership signature on title [Dr. Fritz vo[n] Neuenstein... 1830]. FIRST EDITION. A fine work on microscopy illustrated with some remarkable plates of magnified insects, shells, plants, and many others. A very attractive copy of the most beautiful microscopical of all eighteenth century works. The 100 hand colored plates depict all kinds of specimens as witness using a very simple microscope. This work was issued in various states, documented in the bibliographic references cited below. Some copies on the market have 150 plates and are bound in 3 parts, with a title-page showing 1763. There is a special title-page, dated 1760, for the first 50 plates – called a re-issue (BM Readex, XIV, p. 1132). The period of issue is between 1760 and 1763, suggesting the publisher issued plates and text at progressive rates. ¶ Martin Frobenius Ledermüller was a follower of Leeuwenhoek. By 1749 he settled in Nuremberg. In the early period of microscopic analysis, and under the direction of Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769), Ledermüller applied the new scientific tool to the study of botany and produced a number of publications. ¶ See: Poggendorf, I, col. 1403; Hirsch, III, pp. 645-646. En blyertsnotering på försättsbladet, Edinburgh April 1762. Med Wauchope of Edmonstones grav. exlibris. A masterpice of descriptive travel. The most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century. (Hill).

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The most informative work on all aspects of Mexican mining Printed by Ibarra. Folio; full contemporary Spanish calf. First edition; a fine copy of an Ibarra publication, being a commentary on the laws affecting the mining industry of New Spain, etc., addressed to Charles III. by Francisco Xavier de Gamboa, advocate to the Royal Chancery and Inquisition at Mexico. The work contains many statistical tables, and is an interesting and important study of mineral law in Spanish America, by an authority. Francisco Xavier Gamboa was born at Guadalajara (Mexico) in 1717. The sudden death of the lawyer Martinez brought him into prominence at an early age: Gamboa was unexpectedly entrusted with the conduct of a very important lawsuit, which resulted in his being acclaimed as the foremost Mexican lawyer of his time. The Espasa Encyclopedia states: "In 1755 he was sent on an important mission to Madrid, and whilst there, made an exhaustive study of mining law, as many of the lawsuits upon which he was engaged dealt with this branch. Of his rectitude, intelligence and enlightenment, Gamboa left an imperishable record in his works, amongst which figures the code for the guidance of the slaves of Santo Domingo, and the ordinances of that Audiencia. 534 pp páginas [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rarissimo. Etching and engraving, circa 176. Likely been exemplary in the thirtheenth state of twenty-seven, dating back to 1767. A very good impression, printed in brown ink on laid paper with watermark contemporary "double encircled fluers de lys", trimmed to the platemark or with thin margins, light oxidation and paper folds visible on the reverse, otherwise in good condition. Common practice of many publishers in the eighteenth century, was to draw up and give the prints catalogs or price lists - prices of graphic works offered for sale, for the purpose of advertising them, facilitate their orders and obtain subscriptions. Piranesi was not limited to make a simple written catalog, but actually illustrated one, better known as catalog the way, which he published for the first time in 1761. The occasion for the printing of the catalog was that of the new Palazzo Tomati, where he went to settle in 1761. The first catalog contained a list of the 59 views of the series Views of Rome, the list of published books and other prints made, that catalog was updated from time to time with the addition of new material for sale, producing a large number of different states, of which 27 are now known. The catalog recorded is a key element for the dating of the works of Piranesi, irreplaceable means of study and research, the analysis of which states can also determine the approximate all the late works of the artist. In the realization of this work, which is rightly regarded as yet another masterpiece, Piranesi mainly studies the decorative aspect that it had to take. The te

Thomas Leland (1722–1785) was an Irish historian, translator and academic and the author of the early gothic novel, "Longsword, Earl of Salisbury: An Historical Romance", published in 1762. He was born in Dublin and educated at Thomas Sheridan's school and then at Trinity College, where he became Professor of Oratory in 1763. He translated the Orations of Demosthenes in three volumes and wrote a life of Philip of Macedon in 1758. He wrote an influential "History of Ireland from the Invasion of Henry II" in 1773. His portrait, by John Dean, is held by the National Portrait Gallery. Leland was made a fellow of Trinity College Dublin in 1746. He was ordained a Church of Ireland priest in 1748, he served as vicar in Bray, Co. Wicklow, in 1773 he was appointed Vicar of St. Ann's Church, Dawson Street, in Dublin. (Wikipedia) ________________________________________ Provenance: Earl of Glandore, in the County of Kerry, was a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1776 for the Irish politician William Crosbie, 2nd Baron Brandon. He was the son of Sir Maurice Crosbie, who had previously represented County Kerry in the Irish House of Commons for over forty years, and was raised to the peerage as Baron Brandon in 1758. The first Baron was succeeded by his son, the second Baron. He was a member of the Irish Parliament for Ardfert. In 1771 he was created Viscount Crosbie, of Ardfert in the County of Kerry, and in 1776 he was further honoured when he was made Earl of Glandore, in the County of Cork. Both titles were in the Peerage of Ireland. On his death the titles passed to his son, the second Earl. He sat in the House of Lords as one of the original twenty-eight Irish Representative Peers. He was childless and on his death in 1815 the viscountcy and earldom became extinct. He was succeeded in the barony by his cousin, the fourth Baron. He was the son of the Very Reverend the Hon. Maurice Crosbie, Dean of Limerick, younger son of the first Baron. Lord Brandon was a clergyman and served as Rector of Castle Island in County Kerry. He had no surviving male issue and on his death in 1832 the barony became extinct as well. The family seat was Ardfert Abbey, Ardfert, County Kerry. (Wikipedia) ________________________________________ Philip II of Macedon (Phílippos II ho Makedon; 382–336 BC) was the king (Basileus) of the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon from 359 BC until his assassination in 336 BC. He was a member of the Argead dynasty, the third son of King Amyntas III, and father of Alexander the Great and Philip III. Philip was the youngest son of the king Amyntas III and Eurydice I. In his youth (c. 368 – 365 BC), Philip was held as a hostage in Thebes, which was the leading city of Greece during the Theban hegemony. While a captive there, Philip received a military and diplomatic education from Epaminondas, became eromenos of Pelopidas, and lived with Pammenes, who was an enthusiastic advocate of the Sacred Band of Thebes. In 364 BC, Philip returned to Macedon. The deaths of Philip's elder brothers, King Alexander II and Perdiccas III, allowed him to take the throne in 359 BC. Originally appointed regent for his infant nephew Amyntas IV, who was the son of Perdiccas III, Philip managed to take the kingdom for himsel

Printed for Robert Horsfield, London 1761 - 16mo., [Part I] 130 pp.[ dated 1761]; [Part II] 126 pp. [dated 1760], 1 p. advert. Contemporary full calf, with the spine expertly repaired; board edges are rubbed. Previous owner's name on endpaper, few light pencil notations, light foxing and offsetting to endpapers and tile page from the binder's glue. See PHOTOGRAPHY: ESSAYS & IMAGES (1980) edited by Beaumont Newhall, p. 13-14 "In 1760 the French writer Charles François Tiphaigne de la Roche wrote a novel that today would be considered science fiction. Titled Giphantie, an anagram of his name, it describes his imaginary travels. He was lifted into the air and transported half unconscious, to a beautiful garden in a strange land. There he met a Spirit who said, 'I am the Prefect of this island which is called Giphantie.' With the Prefect as guide, Tiphaigne explored the wonders of 'the island.'" In GIPHANTIA, Chapter XVII, Part I, The author prophecies the fixing of transient images of nature by the action of light. "Thou knowest that the rays of light, reflected from different bodies, make a picture and paint the bodies upon all polished surfaces, on the retina of the eye, for instance, on water, on glass. The elementary spirits have studied to fix these transient images: they have composed a most subtle matter, very viscous, and proper to harden and dry, by the help of which a picture is made in the twinkle of an eye. They do over this matter a piece of canvas, and hold it before the objects they have in mind to paint. The first effect of the canvas is that of a mirror; there are seen upon it all the bodies far and near, whose image the light can transmit. But what the glass cannot do, the canvas, by means of the viscous matter, retains the images. The mirror shows the objects exactly; but keeps none; our canvases show them with the same exactness, and retains them all. This impression of the images is made the first instant they are received on the canvas, which is immediately carried away into some dark place; an hour after, the subtle matter dries, and you have a picture so much the more the valuable, as it cannot be imitated by art nor damaged by time." This is considered a cornerstone book in any collection of photographic literature, and photography's first fictional work.Roosens and Salu No. 10421. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Systeme de Copernic

Paris: Louis Charles Desnos, 1761. unbound. Copper plate engraving with original hand color. Image measure 15" x 21.5" This impressive chart by Desnos and Brion de la Tour depicts the astronomical model developed by Nicolaus Copernicus. The Copernican Heliocentrism shows a stationary Sun at the center of the Universe with all the planets rotating around it. The Copernicus model is believed to have given birth to modern astronomy as it departed from the prevailing Ptolemaic system, which for centuries placed the Earth at the center. The whole is surrounded by text with remarks and descriptions of the map and enclosed in a decorative border which was only added to the deluxe editions of his atlas. The map is in good condition with minor wear and creasing along the centerfold. Centerfold split at bottom, not affecting printed image. Original plate mark is visible.Louis Charles Desnos (1725 - 1805) was a cartographer and globe maker from Paris, France. He was the Royal Globe Maker for the Kind of Denmark, Christian VII, and published a large number of maps during his time. Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1823) is best known for his 'Atlas General' published in collaboration with Louis Charles Desnos. He held the title of Royal Cartographer to the King of France. This is an uncommon example of their collaborative work.

Recherches sur l'origine du despotisme oriental

Good binding and cover. Tails of boards starting. Minor edge wear. Clean, unmarked pages. Nicolas Antoine Boulanger was an Enlightenment French philosopher, cartographer, and engineer. Boulanger had some fluency in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, Chaldean, and Arabic. Intended as an introduction and key to Montesquieu's L'Esprit des Loix, Boulanger's theological-political treatise was edited and first published posthumously in 1761 by the Baron d'Holbach. This, his most famous work, Research into the Origins of Oriental Despotism, speculates on the origin of human societies. The main theme described aptly by Paul Sadrin, is that "Man, after escaping the Flood, was terrified.Everything was gradually spoiled by forgetfulness and imposture - the forgetfulness of most men and the imposture of a few leaders. Religion, which had only been the memory of the disaster and the commemoration of the "renewed world," became the Revelation." This was in Boulanger's eyes the worst of crimes, as the Revelation deprives man of his humanity and gives birth to the cruelest of despotisms, the theocratic regime, of which God is the monarch and the monarch is God.What matters to Boulanger is to expose the direct relationship between theocracy and civil despotism." (p. 36-37) Sadrin, Paul. "NICOLAS-ANTOINE BOULANGER (1722?59)". The Yale University Library Gazette 71.1/2 (1996): 32?42. The value to the modern reader is perhaps greater in what it says about how Boulanger, and those he influenced, thought about how society is constructed and the destruction of freedom within society.
