The memoirs of Ninon de l'Enclos, with her letters to Monsr de St Evremond and to the Marquis de Sevigné. Collected and translated from the French, by a lady

London, printed for R.and J.Dodsley 1761.. 2 vols, 12mo, xii, 274, 247 p., a fine copy in contemporary calf. First edition. Apparently put together by Elizabeth Griffith (1727?-1793), the actress and novelist. It consists of the (genuine?) letters to St Evremond, a lengthy introduction by the translator based mainly on Douxmenil's 'Memoires et lettres pour servir a l'histoire de la vie de ...', and the letters to the marquis de Sevigné, forgeries attributed to Louis Damours. Ninon has never had the glamour in England that she had in France, but this book ran through several editions. This is an eighteenth-century English book of a kind hard to find nowadays, a perfect copy in calf of a good, pale colour. "At length the polite Abbe de Gedoine pressed and obtained an assignation. He came, and found the enchanting Ninon reclining on a couch, like the Grandmother of the Loves, in the most galant deshabille. He asked her, but with the greatest air of respect, why she had deferred so long the completion of his happiness? I must confess, replied she, that it proceeded from a remain of vanity: I piqued myself on having a lover at fourscore, and it was but yesterday that I was eighty compleat."

"Dictionary of scientific biography" skriver apropå dess betydelse: "Wallerius established as a fundamental, necessary principle that agricultural chemistry should be based on comparative study of the chemical composition not only of plants but also of the earth in which they grow." Carl Gustaf Lewenhaupt (1834-1908) ägde gården Aske i Håtuna socken i Uppland. The History of the Proceedings in the Case of Margaret, Commonly called Peg, only lawful Sister to John Bull, Esq

London: Printed for W. Owen, near Temple Bar, 1761 First edition. Contemporary pale polished calf, spine with raised bands and simple gilt rules, contemporary red morocco label. . Octavo. Title a little soiled, and the occasional small stain, but generally a fine, fresh copy. In dark green cloth clamshell case. Until recently this work , a witty political satire, was usually attributed to Adam Ferguson but David Raynor, in his edition (Cambridge University Press, 1982), has cogently argued that the work is in fact by David Hume. Hume had written to the Rev. Alexander Carlyle of Inveresk on 3 February 1761, claiming that he had written the work, but Carlyle thought that this was a device to direct attention away from Ferguson as the likely author. The evidence – and there is a lot of it – is unclear, but many scholars are persuaded that the work is by Hume. The ledgers of William Strahan in the British Library reveal that he was the printer of the work, and that the Edinburgh published Patrick Neill participated silently in the publication (Add Mss. 48803A, f.43r). Strahan printed 1000 copies of the first edition, which was published on 3 January 1761; he printed 750 copies of the second edition, published on 11 February 1761.

Withal, a. pleasing all-original VG set.. Rousseau a "Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of 18th-century Romanticism of French expression. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological and educational thought." Rousseau's epistolary novel Julie, ou la nouvelle HŽlo•se, was first published 1761, É and this, the first translation into English, was published in the very same year. "The novel's subtitle points to the history of 'HŽlo•se dÕArgenteuil and Peter Abelard', a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel, a philosophical theory about authenticity permeates through it, as he explores autonomy and authenticity as moral values. A common interpretation is that Rousseau valued the ethics of authenticity over rational moral principles, as he illlustrates the principle that one should do what is imposed upon him by society only insofar as it would seem congruent with one's 'secret principles' and feelings, being constituent of one's core identity. Thus unauthentic behavior would pave the way to self-destruction." [Wiki]. The novel was extremely popular in its day, touted by some as the top 'best seller' of the century. According to Black, the novel saw 14 English editions by 1800. Today, the first edition somewhat uncommon on the market. . Printer's device to t.p.

This particular image was worked up into a painting by Pugh and it was from this that the engraving was made by Canot. The complete Scenographia Americana (with a total of 28 plates) is a legendary rarity: no copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. Individual prints are therefore all that the collector can hope for, and the present image is one of the most important. Governor Thomas Pownall, one of the few sympathetic colonial governors in North America, was also an artist, author and mapmaker. He first came to America as secretary of the governor of New York, Sir Danvers Osborn, in 1753, who committed suicide a few days after arriving. Pownall stayed on in America and became deeply involved in colonial politics during these critical years (the French and Indian War). He contributed to and supported Pitt's strategy in the war against the French and was appointed governor of Massachusetts, replacing Shirley, in August of 1757. He was at first very popular, energetically raising troops and prosecuting the war with the French, but political rivalry and objections to his own rather free lifestyle and manners led to his retirement from the position at his own request, returning to England in 1760. He remained a staunch supporter of the American causes as they arose in the 1760s. Interestingly, he was very much in favor of emancipation of the slaves in America. Pownall was a long time friend of Benjamin Franklin. Deak, 106

Cosmologische Briefe über die Einrichtung des Weltbaues

Augsburg: Eberhard Kletts Wittiv, 1761 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (19.4x12.0cm). xxviii, 318 pp., 1 folding printed table. Text with minor browning, first free endpaper with old ownership entries. Contemporary papercard board, gilt, somewhat rubbed. ---- Houzeau-L. 8886. Poggendorff I, 1355 ; Goed. IV 1, 479, 1. Ziegenfuss II, 11. - The scarce first edition of Lambert's sensational "Cosmological Letters", his most important astronomical work, in which he to a large extent fore-shadowed the documentation of the basic features of the universe that Herschel later carried out. The work became very popular and was translated into French, Russian, and English, and it was later re-written and published as "Systeme du Monde" in Berlin, 1770. "Of special interest among Lambert's astronomical writings - apart from applications of his physical doctrines - are his famous Cosmologische Briefe über die Einrichtung des Weltbaues" (Augsburg, 1761). Not familiar with the similar ideas of Thomas Wright (1750) and with Kant's "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte und Theorie des Himmels" (1755), Lambert had the idea that what appears as the Milky Way might be the visual effect of a lens-shaped universe. On this basis he elaborated a theory according to which the thousand of stars surrounding the sun constituted a system. Moreover he considered the Milky Way as a large number of such systems, that is, a system of higher order... Only when William Hershel systematically examined the heavens telescopically and discovered numerous nebulae and "telescopic milky-ways" did it become obvious that Lambert's description was not mere science fiction but to a large extent a bold vision of the basic features of the universe" (Scriba in D.S.B. VII:598). --- Kant's mentor (Martin Knutzen) died in 1755, three years before the pre-critical project unfolded. But Kant still had the chance of meeting kindred spirits. One of these was the great philosopher and mathematician Johann Heinrich Lambert, whom he admired a great deal. Finally he had encountered a thinker who appreciated both the scientific and metaphysical perspective, who worried about their tensions, and who was searching for a truce. In his "Cosmologische Briefe." (Cosmological Letters on the establishment of the universe), Lambert worked on the same topic as Kant had worked on in his earlier Universal Natural History. The tasks and results of both works resemble each other, in so far as they were both proposals of integrating Newtonian physics into a larger framework, and they both contained a theory of the dynamic constitution of the universe. Furthermore, as Kant's scientific works should be viewed under the perspective of his general philosophical outlook, so must Lambert's work in physics and astronomy be seen in relation to his general philosophical outlook and his perpetual quest for introducing mathematical exactness into the sciences. "Lambert's efforts to improve communication and collaboration in astronomy were noteworthy. He promoted the publication of astronomical journals and founded "Berliner astronomisches Jahrbuch oder Ephemeriden". Many of the articles that he contributed to it were not published until after his death... He also favored the founding of the Berlin observatory. These suggestions, in line with Leibniz' far-reaching plans for international cooperation of scientific societies, inaugurated a new period of scientific teamwork." (D.S.B., VII:598)..

These suggestions, in line with Leibniz' far-reaching plans for international cooperation of scientific societies, inaugurated a new period of scientific teamwork." (D.S.B., VII:598)

Band (Tomus I-V, = Fasc. 1-15).

Kopenhagen (Copenhagen), Nicolaus Möller, (1761) 1766-82. Folio. (37,5x25,5 cm.). Bound in five beautiful contemporary uniform full mottled calf w. six raised bands, creating seven compartments, which are profusely gilt. Leather title-labels reading "FLORA DANICA" All edges marbled. Capitals of 2 volumes w. a few minor tears, corners a bit bumped, otherwise very well-kept. Each volume w. title-page in red and black (the third volume has the Latin title-page: "Icones Plantarum", though). Half-titles and text-leaves w. the plant-names of each fascicle (15) and all 900 engraved plates in exquisite, uniform original hand-colouring. 14 plates are folded because of the size (a few of these w. a small tear and a few are a bit shaved). Internally a practically mint copy, in which all of the plates for all five volumes are printed on handmade paper w. the water-mark "J. Haring og Zonen"; also w. the tissue-guard for each plate has this water-mark (this fine paper is characteristic for the first volumes of the work, the later volumes are printed on less good paper). Volumes 1-4 have the super ex-libris of the German natural scientist August Zorn on the inside of front boards and a little circular stamp on verso of Title-pages.. This is the original printing of the first 5 volumes of the greatest illustrated work in Danish book-production, and the largest Flora ever produced. The Flora Danica ranks among the finest floras ever compiled. The earlier plates, in particular, are extremely delicately engraved and beautifully coloured; the later fascicles and volumes, however, were printed on an unattractive type of paper, and the colouring gradually deteriorated. The colouring in this copy of the first 900 plates is of the highest uniform quality throughout, and must be seen as superior in quality in comparison to an average copy, as these often show variation in the colouring. The work became the model for the most prestigious 18th century luxury dinner service in production today, bearing the same name "Flora Danica" and produced by the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory. The decorations on the porcelain are copied from the engraved plates. - Sitwell, Great Flower Books, p. 124 - Nissen: 2249 - Hunt: 594 - Pritzel: 6799
