Withal, a. pleasing all-original VG set.. Rousseau a "Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of 18th-century Romanticism of French expression. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological and educational thought."& & Rousseau's epistolary novel Julie, ou la nouvelle HŽlo•se, was first published 1761, É and this, the first translation into English, was published in the very same year. "The novel's subtitle points to the history of 'HŽlo•se dÕArgenteuil and Peter Abelard', a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel, a philosophical theory about authenticity permeates through it, as he explores autonomy and authenticity as moral values. A common interpretation is that Rousseau valued the ethics of authenticity over rational moral principles, as he illlustrates the principle that one should do what is imposed upon him by society only insofar as it would seem congruent with one's 'secret principles' and feelings, being constituent of one's core identity. Thus unauthentic behavior would pave the way to self-destruction." [Wiki]. & & The novel was extremely popular in its day, touted by some as the top 'best seller' of the century. According to Black, the novel saw 14 English editions by 1800. Today, the first edition somewhat uncommon on the market. . Printer's device to t.p.

Venice: Ex Typographia Remondiniana, [1761]. 2 volumes bound in one. First edition, first issue, large-paper copy and a copy with pleasing “old world” provenance. Fine woodcut head- and tailpieces, without the engraved portrait by Renard which is often lacking. Folio, 41 x 24.5 cm, full contemporary calf expertly rehinged at an early date, gilt tooled spine, red and green morocco lettering labels. xcvi, 298; 452 pp. A very good copy with wide margins, minor dampstain at the lower blank margin, most noticeable in the index and diminishing toward the end of this section, some wear to the corners of the covers. Bookplate and small title-page stamp of the Medical Society of Norwich and Norfolk. The Medical Society bookplate is pasted over the eighteenth-century bookplate of Johannes Manning, M.D., with the inscription on an early blank, "Presented by the executors of the late Dr. Manning." THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS IN THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE, and “a foundation of modern pathological anatomy. Vast in scope, it is one of the most fundamentally important works in the history of medicine. In it he (Morgagni) reports in precise and exhaustive detail his findings in nearly seven hundred autopsy dissections, introducing and insisting on the concept that diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of disease must be based on an exact understanding of the pathologic changes in the anatomical structures” (Heirs to Hippocrates 501). The work focused attention on the "seat" rather than the "nature" of the disease, which had been the principle concern of medicine since Hippocrates. "By this great work, one of the most important in the history of medicine, Morgagni was the true founder of modern pathological anatomy. The work was completed in Morgagni's 79th year and consists of a series of 70 letters reporting about 700 cases and necropsies. As best he could, he correlated the clinical record with the post-mortem findings. Morgagni gave the first descriptions of several pathological conditions [including descriptions of nitral stenosis and heart block (Letter III), and of angina pectoris]. He was Professor of Anatomy at Padua." The Coat of Arms of the Manning family was used by Dr. Johannes Manning for his bookplate which is affixed to the front pastedown, and which is currently underneath the plate of the Norwich and Norfolk Medical Society. Concerning the Manning family, there is much known. “The surname of MANNING was derived from the Old English word 'manningi' a nickname for a brave and valiant man. The name was brought to England in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066. Early records of the name mention MANNIG ( without surname ) listed as a tenant in the Domesday Book of 1086. Algarus Manning est Upsune, was recorded in 1130 in County Northumberland. Semem filius Manning, was documented in the year 1181 in County Essex. Henry Maninge was recorded in County Cambridge in the year 1273. Nicholas Mannyng, 1273 ibid. Johannes Manning was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379 and Norah Mannyng was also recorded Thomas Renshaw and Jane Mannin were married at St. George's, Hanover Square, London in the year 1757. This originally English name, which is numerous in County Cork, and County Dublin, is sometimes used as a synonym of Mannin. Ireland was one of the earliest countries to evolve a system of hereditary surnames. They came into being fairly generally in the 11th century, and indeed a few were found before the year 1000. The maritime county of Cork, in Munster, is bounded by the sea on the south-west, the south and the south-east. To the east it has land boundaries with the counties of Waterford and Tipperary, and to the north with Limerick and to the west with Kerry. Anciently the country formed part of the kingdom of Desmond. After the Anglo-Norman Invasion the whole of the present county, save the City of Cork (which had been founded by the Vikings) and its surroundings, was granted in 1177 by Henry 11 to Anglo-Norman knights who brought over their followers and established a military colony. A notable member of the name was Thomas Manning (1772-1840) the English traveller, born in Suffolk. He entered Caius College, Cambridge, to study Chinese and in 1806 went out as a doctor to Canton. In 1811, he visited Lhasa in Tibet, the first Englishman ever there. He returned to England in 1817, and then went to travel in Italy. He returned, and died in Bath. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. Registered at the Ulster Office.”

The self named Alexander The Corrector nonetheless created a work which to this day is "the" concordance for the bible.- Alexander Cruden was born in Aberdeen in Scotland (baptised on June 8, 1699, St. Nicholas Kirk, Aberdeen, according to recent research) and was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Marischal College, University of Aberdeen, and became an excellent Latin, Greek and Biblical scholar.-As well as producing the concordance, Cruden worked as a proofreader and bookseller, several editions of Greek and Latin classics are said to have owed their accuracy to his care. Cruden opened a booksellers shop in the Royal Exchange. In April 1735 he obtained the title of bookseller to the Queen by recommendation of the Lord Mayor and most of the Whig aldermen. The post was an unremunerative sinecure. After failing to obtain the honour of knighthood, he was nominated as Parliamentary candidate for the City of London in 1754, but he decided to withdraw. Some point after this, Cruden adopted the title of Corrector. Cruden saw it as his personal mission to safeguard the nation's spelling and grammar, and through that, the nation's moral health.         JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE TO NORTH- AMERICA...CONTAINING THE GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION AND NATURAL HISTORY OF THAT COUNTRY, PARTICULARLY CANADA. TOGETHER WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE CUSTOMS, CHARACTERS, RELIGION, MANNERS AND TRADITIONS OF THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS

London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley..., 1761.. Two volumes. viii,382; viii,380,[22]pp. plus folding map and 4pp. of ads. Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked with antique gilt-extra spine, leather labels. Corners worn. Internally clean. Overall very good. Lacks the half titles. This is the George Brinley-Brayton Ives copy, with their bookplates from their sales in 1879 and 1891. Brinley was one of the greatest American book collectors of all time, and he amassed an astounding collection of books from dealers, at auction, and by travelling throughout New England and “scouting” for himself. His library was sold at a series of sales between 1879 and 1893. Brayton Ives, a graduate of Yale, was commissioned a brigadier general during the Civil War and was subsequently very active on Wall Street, where he was elected president of the New York Stock Exchange in 1877. Ives himself built a significant collection of Americana, and was an active participant at the Brinley sales, where he bought this copy, in 1878, for $1.75. It sold at the 1891 sale of Ives’ books for $6. Charlevoix was sent to Canada by the Jesuits at the age of twenty-three. After four years of missionary work, he returned to France, whereupon he accepted the commission for this trip from the regent of France. During 1720- 22 he travelled in the Great Lakes region and down the Mississippi. Although his trip was publicly stated to be for the purpose of inspecting interior posts and settlements, he was actually under orders to seek out information relating to the existence of a passage to the Pacific via continental North America. During his travels, Charlevoix questioned the Sioux and traders he found returning to the Mississippi via the Missouri River. Although he hoped to return up the Mississippi in 1723, he fell ill at Biloxi and was forced to return to France from there. "...One of the most interesting of 18th century travel books" - Graff.         Carceri D"invenzione plate II: 2nd State

Rome: Piranesi G B, 1761. Carceri, plate first added to Second Edition. Etching with engraving, on wove paper, 565 x 415mm., an excellent impression, with wide margins, slight wear on soft central horizontal fold, a few short tears at sheet edges, well outside the platemark, partially laid on support, framed and glazed, This plate was not included by Piranesi in the first (light) edition of 14 plates issued by Bouchard which make up the Carceri. When Piranesi rssued his reworked (dark) version in 1761 he added two plates not previously issued, of which this is one. It is therefore, strictly speaking, the first edition of this plate - but is referred to by Robison (207) as Second Edition because 14 of the other plates issued with it were second editions. This plate is generally described as no 2 in the series, because of the presence of the inscribed Roman Numeral II in the top right corner of the third and subsequent states. However, this print is of the second state, before the addition of the numerals. This second state is distinguished from the first state by the addition of the signature, address and price in the bottom margin. (Only one copy of the first state is known to exist - that in the Marciana Library, Venice). emailed photos available on request.. Illus. by Piranesi G B. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

Piranesi's enthusiasm for Rome and superior abilities made him able to faithfully imitate the actual remains of a fabric; his invention in catching the design of the original architect provided the missing parts; his masterful skill at engraving introduced groups of vases, altars, tombs that were absent in reality; and his broad and scientific distribution of light and shade completed the picture, creating a striking effect from the whole view.

The History of the Proceedings in the Case of Margaret, Commonly called Peg, only lawful Sister to John Bull, Esq

London: Printed for W. Owen, near Temple Bar, 1761 First edition. Contemporary pale polished calf, spine with raised bands and simple gilt rules, contemporary red morocco label. . Octavo. Title a little soiled, and the occasional small stain, but generally a fine, fresh copy. In dark green cloth clamshell case. Until recently this work , a witty political satire, was usually attributed to Adam Ferguson but David Raynor, in his edition (Cambridge University Press, 1982), has cogently argued that the work is in fact by David Hume. Hume had written to the Rev. Alexander Carlyle of Inveresk on 3 February 1761, claiming that he had written the work, but Carlyle thought that this was a device to direct attention away from Ferguson as the likely author. The evidence ? and there is a lot of it ? is unclear, but many scholars are persuaded that the work is by Hume. The ledgers of William Strahan in the British Library reveal that he was the printer of the work, and that the Edinburgh published Patrick Neill participated silently in the publication (Add Mss. 48803A, f.43r). Strahan printed 1000 copies of the first edition, which was published on 3 January 1761; he printed 750 copies of the second edition, published on 11 February 1761.

London, the author, 1761-1775. 26 volumes bound in 13. Folio (445 x 290mm), with 1546 engraved plates on 1544 leaves. Contemporary calf, richly gilt decorated new spines in 7 compartments with red and green gilt lettered label, frontcover with gilt ornament. First editions (excepting volumes 1, 4 and 5 which are in the second edition) of the greatest and largest botanical publication of the eighteenth century. The work is in complete state exceptionally rare and the present copy is one of the most complete ones to come on the market. In our catalogue 285 (2006) item 96 we offered a complete copy with 1548 engraved plates. Most sets contain a mixture of first and later issues. Our copy lacks plate 13 of volume 1; plate 50 of volume 21 (in its place is bound plate 36 which is double), and a text leaf in volume 2. A few copies of the work were also issued with the plates coloured. A total of some 26,000 plants are illustrated and described. 'The Vegetable system is of great importance because it gave for the first time in the vernacular a comprehensive treatment of the plant kingdom, on a lavish scale... adopting the Linnaean generic names and introducing binary nomenclature' (Stafleu). Numerous species are described for the first time, most being recently introduced exotics. The Vegetable system is dedicated to the Prince of Wales, later George III. Its publication was instigated by, and partially financed by, John Stuart, Earl of Bute, a notable patron of botany and the initiator of Kew Gardens as a botanic garden. He may well have contributed to the text. John Hill was involved in lengthy financial disputes with Bute, and the publication of the Vegetable system ended in Hill's bankruptcy and death. "Wallerius' interest in agriculture naturally led him to pursue agricultural chemistry, especially since agriculture was of great importance for the national economy. His research proved so basic and of such scope that he was called the father of agricultural chemistry. His principal work in this field was 'Agricultura fundamenta chemica ...' which was published in Latin and Swedish, in parallel columns, and was later translated into German, French, Spanish, and English. Wallerius established as a fundamental, necessary principle that agricultural chemistry should be based on comparative study of the chemical composition not only of plants but also of the earth in which they grow" (D.S.B. Inside page are pleasantly age toned evenly throughout. Attractive book in fine condition. This scarce biography of the first Bishop of Quebec (1623-1708) contains much useful information about the late 17th century history of the region. Although the terminal leaf indicates this to be the end of the first volume, only one was published. First Edition of this scarce book, the earliest biography of François Xavier de Laval de Montigny [1623-1708], first bishop of Quebec (1674-88) and one of the most powerful and influential figures in seventeenth century New France., Although Sabin cites the first edition of this work, Paris, 1761, as existing in two volumes, only one volume is all that was published. A scarce little book that Winsor says "is worth looking into, though not with the object of accepting all its statements. Frontenac is bitterly attacked, his faults magnified, and many serious charges preferred against him." Streeter Sale 129. Sabin 39216; Dionne 653; Winsor, IV. pp. 358--59. Faribault, No. 378.
