The Philological Miscellany; Consisting of Select Essaya..... Including: Considerations concerning the first formaations of Languages, and the diffefrent genius of original and compounded Languages

[London]: Editor, 1761 1761, 1st ed, VG+. In skillful modern 'old' half speckled calf over red marbled boards. Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling, gilt titles to red morocco label. Internally, [2], (iii-viii), 510 pp, page 303 numbered 333, new 'old' endpapers, circular blind and ink stamp of the Education board to titlepage each with a cancelled stamp, very occasional light foxing. Very Rare. (Folio, 126209 mm). (ESTC P6093. Alston III 271, 823).Please contact for more information. This was the first appearance of Smith's influential essay on language. Along with 4 articles by Sallier, 2 by Pouilly, 3 by Fraguier and others including a 40 pp of essays by Maupertius. Smith, moral philosopher and political economist, had a hard-headed, even cynical awareness of the political and moral dilemmas of his own day, and he made many fruitful suggestions designed to minimize if not remove their consequences. When considering later versions of these dilemmas Smith continues to provide a benchmark, but if his work lives on it is as an example of humane speculation at the highest level combined with detailed observation and insight into the human condition.

      - Barbier III, col.400; KVK (3 copies); Polak 13070; cf: Duncan, The Mariner's Chronicle III, pp. 180-198; not in Huntress. Very rare narrative of the loss of the English East Indiaman Fattysalam off the coast of Coromandel on 28 August 1761. It was written by the French counsellor, man of letters and employee at the Royal library of King Louis XV, Anne-Gabriel Meusnier de Querlon (1702-1780), Comte de Kearny. The account ''is given in a letter from M. de Kearny, a captain in Lally's regiment, who was taken prisoner by the English, to the Count D'Estaing, lieutenant-general, commanding the French troops in the East Indies, during the war of 1756 . The Fattysalam had been built at Bombay, and had never been employed in the Indian seas. She was intended to carry great part of the stores taken by the English, and near 500 troops, which it had been thought fit to send to Bengal, because after the regiment of Pondicherry, they were not wanted on that coast.'' (Duncan).Kearny was one out of 12 who had escaped from the ship, which had been lost, together with most of the crew. By way of the dominion of the Rajah of Arsapour, Cuttack, Barrasole and Calcutta, the company arrived at Goupil (Gupil) where they spotted several of the East India Company's ships. ''On the 2d of February I [Kearny] left Calcutta and returned to Goupil, on the Ganges, where I embarked in the Holdernesse, commanded by Captain Brooke. I was received with great kindness by the captain, who had on board thirteen or fourteen other French officers, prisoners like myself'' (Duncan). After a month the ship arrived at London, from where he was permitted to return to France.Only slightly trimmed. In very good condition, with only a small marginal stain at the foot of pp. 35-36. The front wrapper with 2 tears along a fold.

N.p., n.pr., 1761. - 2 parts in 1 volume. 8°, nineteenth-century red quarter morocco over marbled boards (worn, compartment at head of spine defective, smaller defect at foot of spine, hinges cracking), spine gilt with raised bands in five compartments, gilt letter title in second compartment from head, marbled endleaves, text block edges sprinkled red. Woodcut tailpieces and vignettes. Each part with letterpress title-page. First title-page partially detached; somewhat browned, scattered light foxing. The title-page for part 2 follows p. 46. Overall in good condition. Bookplates of Joaquim de Sousa Leão and Salvador de Mendonça. 46 pp., (1 l.), (1), 47-89 pp., (1 l. errata). *** One of at least four editions in French of this defense of the Jesuits. Pages 7-11 and 23-5 analyze Jesuit actions in Brazil. The remainder of the first part describes the Marques de Pombal's reaction to these events and his interpretation of other activities of the Jesuits that led to their expulsion from Portugal in 1759. The second part discusses Jesuit relations with the pope and Pombal's attempts to turn the pope against them. The work was originally published in Italian: the first part, Osservazioni sopra la condotta tenuta dal ministro di Portogallo nell' affare de' Gesuiti, in an undated edition with the false imprint "Cosmopoli," and the second part, Appendice alle osservazioni ., in an edition without imprint or date. Three other editions in French appeared at Avignon - one in 1760 (with an added appendix of documents) and two in 1761. The work was also translated into Spanish, German and Dutch. Although this edition lacks an imprint, one possible clue to its place of publication is that both parts bear a reimprimatur signed in type by Felix Turski, vicar of Warsaw.Backer-Sommervogel attributes this work to the Jesuit Francesco Benincasa (1731-1793), although he notes that others have credited the first part to Gaetano Forti and the second part to Julio Césare Cordara. Born in Sassuolo (Modena), Benincasa entered the Jesuit order in 1749 and taught grammar for many years at Parma and Imola. His advocacy of the Jesuits prompted ecclesiastical authorities to arrest him in 1773 at Rome, where he was imprisoned for two years. In 1780 Benincasa was appointed bishop of Capri, a post he held until his death.Provenance: Joaquim de Sousa-Leão, a distinguished Brazilian historian and diplomat of Portuguese ascendancy, was a significant book and art collector. He wrote on art and historical subjects, being an expert on the Flemish painter Frans Post: see Frans Post 1612-1680, Amsterdam: A.L. Gendt & Co., 1973, and Frans Post, São Paulo: Civilização Brasileira, 1948.*** Not in Lisbon, Biblioteca Nacional, Marquês de Pombal, which lists no edition in Italian or French. Not in Backer-Sommervogel; see I, 1305 and XI, 1195 for Avignon editions of 1761, and VIII, 1814 for an Avignon, 1760 edition. Not in Borba de Moraes. Not in Sabin. Not located in Porbase.         Het Hernhutsche nachtegaaltje, in eene vrolyke luim, zingende honderd nieuwe en nooit te voren gedrukte airtjes, zoo menuëtten, contredansen, marsen, etc. etc. Gedrukt voor den auteur. Amsterdam, [z.n.], 1757.

      - Amsterdam, F. Houttuyn, 1761-1785. Three sections in 38 volumes. 8vo (21.0 x 13.0 cm). With 296 finely hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary uniform half calf over speckled boards, spines with gilt-stippled bands, and orange and white vellum labels with gilt titles.= A rare hand-coloured (over)complete set (with supplement) of the definitive Dutch natural history encyclopaedia of the 18th century, compiled by Martinus Houttuyn and often referred to as the "Houttuyn" edition. The work is divided in three sections as follows: section I: Zoology in 18 volumes with 143 plates; section II: Botany in 14 volumes with 105 plates, illustrating 275 species of plants and "including well over 100 new species of plants"; section III: Minerals in five volumes with 48 plates. Bound in the rear of the 37th volume are the "Systematische bladwijzer der Planten" (Systematic index of plants), the "Na-bericht van den schryver" (author's epilogue), and the "Korte inhoud der geheele natuurlyke historie" (summary of the contents of each volume). These three appendices are not paginated. A 38th part, the "Kortbegrip van het zamenstel der natuur van den heer C. Linnaeus" (summary of the Linnaean system) is also included. The taxonomic part of the book is extremely detailed and contains a wealth of incidental information brought together in a form found nowhere else, not even by Linnaeus himself. The 38th part supplement is by P. Boddaert and was published in Amsterdam by D. Schuurman [1783; c, 437, (ii) pp.]. It deals only with mammals and birds and is very rare. Soulsby list it as wanting from the BM(NH) library. A few labels slightly chipped, a few plates a bit spotted, but generally very clean. Provenance: the bookplate of Buijnsters-Smets on the front pastedowns of the Houttuyn volumes; the pictorial bookplate of AJKV "Alle jeucht wil kennen" in the Boddaert volume. A very beautiful set. Nissen ZBI, 2011, Soulsby, 73; Soulsby 102 (part) for Boddaert. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Duveen, p. 300; Honeyman 1761 (this copy); Partington II, pp. 203-208 & item 1; STCN (5 copies). The first edition of any work by the mysterious Johannes Isaac Hollandus, a Latin translation of a German manuscript of his treatises on mineralogy, alchemy and the philosopher's stone, and especially on the use of metal oxides to colour stones and crystals to make fake gems and precious stones. The charming little woodcuts show distilling and other equipment.Little is known about Johannes Isaac Hollandus (active 1572-1610?), but the Görlitz astronomer Bartholomeus Scultetus had a German manuscript of some of his treatises on mineralogy that survives in the form of a copy made in Prague in 1572 and Ben Jonson's 1610 play The Alchemists refers to him apparently as still living. His name suggests he was a Dutchman living abroad, but if his father was called Isaac Hollandus, as has been claimed, he may have been born abroad in a Dutch family. With the red morocco bookplate of Robert Honeyman IV. In very good condition, with only a minor transparent stain at the head of the last few leaves and a small marginal rust hole in 1 leaf. Contemporary binding also very good.

The book supports the demand of Lioncy firm that the Jesuits reimburse one and a half milion pounds. This refers to the trade actions of Father La Vallette on the island of Martinique. In 1753, without the consent of his superiors, he founded a trading company which went bankrupt after its ships were seized by the English. This in turn led to the bankrupcy of the Marseille trading company Lioncy Frères et Gouffre. This company started a lawsuit before the Paris court, not only against Father La Valette and his Martinique Jesuits but also against the Paris Jesuits. 2) Gazin S. 275 (éd in-4to; Sommervogel XI-1775 (12).Please notify before visiting to see a book. By Wyndham Beawes, Esq; his Britannick Majesty's consul at Seville and St. Lucar

London: London: printed for R. Baldwin at the Rose, and S. Crowder and Co. at the Looking-Glass, in Pater-Noster-Row. M.DCC.LXI. [1761], 1761. Book. Very Good. Leather. 2nd Edition. Description: Folio (14¾ × 9½ in): vii, [3], 898, [20] p. Modern half leather over cloth. · Condition: Light to moderate foxing and toning. Lacks the preliminary imprimatur leaf. · Comments: Second edition. A massive work covering every subject of law important to the merchant, including ships and shipping, insurance, bills of exchange, money, banking, bankruptcy, piracy, prizes, and topics in public international law that affect trade. In addition to the legal topics, the Beawes wrote detailed descriptions of the commerce of particular countries and regions, including their customs and products. Although aimed at the lay merchant in addition to the lawyer, Beawes supported his discussion with citations to legal treatises and case decisions. Kent in his Commentaries wrote that the courts accepted Beawes' opinions as evidence of the custom of merchants in several cases. Holdsworth considered the book so important that he gave a table of its contents in an appendix to volume 12 of his History of English Law. The work went through six editions in London by 1813 (the last edited by Joseph Chitty) and was reprinted five times in Dublin as well. · Title continued: "... and tables of the correspondence and agreement of the European coins, weights, and measures, with the addition of all others that are known. Extracted from the works of the best writers both at home and abroad; more especially from those justly celebrated ones of Messieurs Savary; improved and corrected by the author's own observations, during his long continuance in trade. The whole calculated for the use and service of the merchant, lawyer, senator, and gentleman." · References: Johnson 10 (6 copies); S&M 1:518(7); Bridgman 15; Worrall 229; Kent, Commentaries 3:126; Marvin 104; Holdsworth, HEL 12:384; Holdsworth, Sources 213; ESTC T136427..

Ownership signature on title [Dr. Fritz vo[n] Neuenstein... 1830]. FIRST EDITION. A fine work on microscopy illustrated with some remarkable plates of magnified insects, shells, plants, and many others. A very attractive copy of the most beautiful microscopical of all eighteenth century works. The 100 hand colored plates depict all kinds of specimens as witness using a very simple microscope. This work was issued in various states, documented in the bibliographic references cited below. Some copies on the market have 150 plates and are bound in 3 parts, with a title-page showing 1763. There is a special title-page, dated 1760, for the first 50 plates – called a re-issue (BM Readex, XIV, p. 1132). The period of issue is between 1760 and 1763, suggesting the publisher issued plates and text at progressive rates. ¶ Martin Frobenius Ledermüller was a follower of Leeuwenhoek. By 1749 he settled in Nuremberg. In the early period of microscopic analysis, and under the direction of Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769), Ledermüller applied the new scientific tool to the study of botany and produced a number of publications. ¶ See: Poggendorf, I, col. 1403; Hirsch, III, pp. 645-646. The most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century. (Hill). [023]
