Viani (Padre)-
Very good.

Hyde, Thomas
Oxford Clarendon Press, 1760. Second edition 4to, pp.[38], 580, 20 (of 21) plates, 4 folding. A very good copy bound in recent half calf, cloth boards. Small hole through first four leaves, not affecting text. Title page lightly soiled. Marginal damp stain to pages 470 ff. Ownership signature. Otherwise a very clean copy. Lacking plate 1, and the normally folding plates 2 & 3 cut and separately bound. Thomas Hyde, an Oxford Orientalist and divine, was the first westerner to make a serious study of the Zoroastrian religion. He researched in Greek, Latin and Arabic sources, and made use of the few Zoroastrian texts he could get hold of. Although later scholars have criticised this work it was an admirable pioneering effort, and virtually the only book on old Iranian religions available in the eighteenth century. The first edition was published in 1700. The two appendices to this second edition are: Magorum Liber Sad-der, Zoroastris Praecepta et Canones Continens: In usum Ecclesiae Magorum & Fidelium eorum omnium, and, Historiae Religionis Veterum Persarum Appendix, Continens Aliquot Tractatiunculas seu Dissertationes, in quibus paulo uberius tranctatur Pauca quaedam, tantum leviter tacta in superiore Opere. KAGAWA, Genteki
N.p.: ca. 1760. The father of Genteki Kagawa, Genetsu (or Shigen) Kagawa (1699-1777), is famous for originating the practice of gynecology and obstetrics in Japan. His "San-ron was destined to be the standard authority on obstetrics in Japan for at least a hundred years. That classic work was followed by the San-ron yoku written in 1775 by Genteki (or Shikei) Kagawa (1739-1779), the adopted son of Genetsu, as a 'supplement' to the San-ron and to correct the errors in the published work of the elder Kagawa, resulting in a considerable improvement in obstetrical methods."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part II, pp. 493-94. Genteki Kagawa is famous for using many unconventional devices for facilitating a successful delivery and was the first obstetrician in Japan to understand that the head of the foetus should be down during delivery. In the 18th century, due to the considerable poverty in Japan, many babies were aborted. Makers and polishers of mirrors also filled the profession of abortionists as they had access to mercury which could be used to terminate foetuses. When the procedure went wrong, women were brought to Kagawa who noticed that the unborn children's heads were almost always at the bottom of the womb. This album - an illustrated practical manual - discusses many case histories of complications, special observations, and remarkable occurrences observed by Kagawa during pregnancy and birth; 33 are finely drawn and colored. It was issued by Kagawa as a sort of examination for his disciples, requi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thin strip of tape from previous matting at mid upper and lower edge (barely visible); very good condition. A view of the elaborate garden design at Sceaux in the vicinity of Paris, featuring cascades, lake and much more. This is an example of a "vue d'optique" or perspective view, a popular print from the second half of the 18th century, designed to be projected with a viewing device (a zograscope or perspective glass) which enhanced the illusion of depth and perspective, providing something of a 3D effect.
