Ingesamt guter Zustand. Johann Elias Ridinger (1698 Ulm - 1767 Augsburg). Deutscher Tiermaler, Radierer und Verleger. Mayhew, Jonathan:
Boston: Printed and sold by Richard Draper, and Edes and Gill, 1760. - [6],377,[2]pp. Contemporary calf, raised bands, gilt leather spine label. Joints rubbed, bookplate removed from front pastedown. Moderate, even tanning; an occasional fox mark. Very good in original condition. An interesting work from the independent minded Boston Congregationalist minister, Jonathan Mayhew. The Cape Ann earthquake of November 18, 1755 remains the largest earthquake in the history of Massachusetts. Felt as far away as Nova Scotia and South Carolina, it damaged hundreds of buildings in Boston. It came just a few weeks after the devastating Lisbon earthquake of November 1, and the events were interpreted by many in Massachusetts as God's anger at their sinfulness. A consistent espouser of a benevolent God, Mayhew here brings together thirteen sermons on the themes of sinners needing to turn their attention to God's testimonies, to keeping the commandments, and to thinking seriously on one's ways. Beckford, William [illustrator : Dorn, Marion V.]
Hardcover with brown paper covered boards and vellum spine. Marbled endpapers. The front displays a stamped and gilded decoration of Arabic typography. The spine contains the title information also in gold. The top edge is gilded. The corners and edges of the boards are slightly damaged. Overall the book is in good condition. No foxing. 16,5 x 23,2 cm, [8] 1-172 [4] pp. The second to last page shows that this book is number 856 of 1050 limited editions that were published in England. This work contains eight full-page lithographs and two small vignette by Marion V. Dorn. Vathek is an early example of a Gothic novel by the British writer William Beckford (1760-1844). The lead character, caliph Vathek, goes on several adventures to gain supernatural powers. Instead of obtaining these powers, Vathek is doomed to live in hell for eternity. On these quests he meets eerie individuals and travels to fantastical places. This work is a beautiful example of the oriental influence in the 19th century. The illustrations are made by the American illustrator and textile designer Marion Victoria Dorn (1896-1964). These expressive and rather modern illustrations are the only pictures by her that were published as book illustrations. The repetition and variation of the motifs demonstrate her powerful way of designing and can easily be converted into patterns for textiles or rugs. B2391

[Click Below for Full Description]

The map is dedicated to Francisco Retz (1673-1750), Superior General of the Society of Jesus Between 1609 and 1780, the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) established an autonomous Christian Indian state on the territory of present-day Paraguay, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina and Brazil. Ouvrage rare complet. His force included 3 regiments of regulars, several companies of Canadian militia, and numerous Indians. He first captured Fort Ontario, then began the assault on Fort Oswego. Oswego was the stronger fortification, but it was now downhill from 120 cannons in the abandoned Fort Ontario. Montcalm swept the fort with cannon fire, killing the British commander, Colonel Mercer, in the bombardment. British forces were forced to surrender on August 15, 1756. Montcalm gave much of the British supplies to his Indian allies, and destroyed the fort. He returned to Quebec in triumph with 1,700 prisoners.
