Nissen ZBI, n° 356. EROTICA. DAMNED STUFF
London: Prnted for C. G. Seyffert n Pall-mall. 1760. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small 8vo, pp. [viii], 168, contemporary calf, recently rebacked, raised bands between gilt rules, red leather label; lack half-title and last leaf of Contents, both of which are supplied in photocopy, pp. 1 -2 repaired, first three leaves of text dampstained, but clean after that. Mentions or discussions of this work appear in scholarly books on eighteenth-century erotica, e. .g, Karen Harvey: Sex and Gender in the Eighteenth Century (2004), but it is really a fairy story with occasional snatches of possible flagellation or other such popular activities for the 18th century gallant. It was mentioned or reviewed in at least three periodicals, The Monthly Review for 1760 (which suggested the original was in French). The Critical Review confirmed the French origin: "This is a wretched translation of a silly attempt to humour in the French, with scarce any other addition than that of the title-page." Sir Walter Scott had a copy in his library at Abbotsford. ESTC T77689 locates copies in BL (2), NLS (Advocates); McMaster, Wisconsin-Madison, UCLA, and Penn.

Dated 26 Park Road, Regent's Park, March 2 [no year] Two old faint glue marks on top centre of 1st page and 4 inch tear along fold, otherwise good condition. To an unknown recipient "Dear Madam" Setting out thoughts regarding the establishment of a "periodical work for children." The suggestion, Austin writes corroborates "my own and that of everyone without a single exception, of my female friends and acquaintances." She then goes on to cite the reasons not to it, including "the difficulty of finding a publisher." She writes: "Murray, though he expressed himself in the handsomest manner both as to the plan and the matter (which he saw) has his hands tied with his family Library. Baldwin is arriving at some older magazine and Harris though with the scheme and that matter dreads his expense and fatigue." She goes on to discuss potential content and ways of realizing the project with "volunteer assistants" and ends with an invitation to visit. Sarah Austin was an English a writer, translator, and wife of jurist John Austin. She urged the establishment in England of a national system of education and is best known for her work Germany from 1760 to 1814, a survey of German institutions and manners.

HARRIS, John and John WALLIS.
Harris and Wallis Corner of St Paul's Churchyard London early 19th Century - Engraved children's game, dissected and mounted on linen, orginal hand-colour. Dimensions: 550 × 510mm (21.75 × 20 inches). An uncommon and early edition of a popular historical race game designed for the education of young children, beginning at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and ending with the accession of King George III in 1760. In an advertisement for the game, the author hoped that the 'utility and tendency of this Game must be obvious at first sight; for surly there cannot be a more agreeable study than History'. The game saw children using a teetotum, or spinning top, to progress through English history in a clockwise direction, with each child assigned a letter to play with and a set of rules that either rewarded or fined the players dependent on which of the 158 medallions they landed upon during the game. The rules for each of the medallions greatly differed, for example the player had to land on the Doomsday medallion in order to continue, and could not share medallions with other players apart from The Holy Land. Despite the monarchic character of the game, medallions also highlight controversy, such as Edward II's supposed love affair with Pierre Gaveston. The game also saw later Victorian editions, with the Queen in the centre. Available here, as usual, without the separately published booklet of rules, this example belongs to an early edition, quite possibly the first of 1803 which was published 6 years before King George III's Golden Jubilee - an event that set a precedent for the … [Click Below for Full Description]
