There were no more in this projected series, but Camper's pupil, S. T. Soemmerring, after Camper's death, published 'lcones herniarum.' Camper's plates for these anatomical and pathological books take their place alongside the illustrations prepared by the artists Lairesse and Wanderlaar for the anatomists Bidloo and Albinus. Together the achievements of these atlases represent, both scientifically and aesthetically, a high point of Dutch civilization in the eighteenth century." K. Roberts and J.D.W. Contemporary mottled calf, richly gilt ornamented spines, with 2 red gilt lettered labels (3 vols. old spines laid down, the others rebacked matching the other vols.). The work deals with 1336 species in addition to 150 "varieties" distributed over 115 genera, which are again grouped in 26 orders. Brisson did not use the binominal system and his systematical classification of the birds differed from that of Linnaeus, surpassing it and being less artificial. The text is written in Latin and French. One plate with marginal paper repair not affecting the illustration. An attractive uniformly bound set.Anker 69; Nissen IVB, 145. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Benvenuti Giuseppe
nella Stamperia di Jacopo Giusti, in Lucca. In-4° (260x190mm), pp.112, cartonatura muta coeva. [Click Below for Full Description]

FRANKLIN, Benjamin.
London: printed for T. Becket, 1760 - 7 pamphlets bound in one volume, octavo (190 × 128 mm). Franklin: pp. [2], 58, including the additional leaf at the end. Late 19th-century half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, narrow bands, gilt lozenges to compartments, marbled endpapers. A little rubbed, contents variably soiled and browned; half-title and title of item (b) torn, no loss of text, half-title laid down, last leaf of the same torn across and with an old sewn repair backed with paper; final leaf of Franklin slightly crumpled and torn at the inner margin, loss of a few characters but overall very good. Full-page table to item (e). First edition of Franklin's "Canada Pamphlet", an important contribution to the debate on the relative merits of the retention of Canada or sugar-rich Guadeloupe following the impending victory in the Seven Years' War. Although contemporary opinion credited Franklin – this copy is annotated "by Mr. Frankland [sic] of America" on the title page – 19th-century scholarship attributed the pamphlet to Richard Jackson. However, the publication of The Papers of Benjamin Franklin returned "The Canada Pamphlet" to the canon: "in recent years Franklin's authorship has been re-established in the minds of all but a few doubters, though, as Franklin himself seems to have acknowledged, he received some help from his friend and ally Jackson. With this attribution to Franklin the present editors wholly concur" (Papers 9:53). As well as arguing strongly for the retention of Canada, in this, "one of his most important publications in pamphlet fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

American Mathematical Textbooks 1760-1850
1760-1850. A substantial collection of American textbooks of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, including representative selections of primers combining lessons in spelling, reading, and writing with arithmetic, designated for use in schools, academies, and lyceums; textbooks of natural philosophy, astronomy, and mathematical geography specified for use in colleges; and ready-reckoners and other books of tables intended for tradesmen. Although textbooks for all levels of instruction are offered, the collection is strongest in those prepared for use in elementary and secondary schools. The reform of mathematical education through the introduction of "Pestalozzian" or child-centred methods of instruction is thus amply documented. The collection was built using as a guide Louis C. Karpinski's magisterial Bibliography of mathematical works printed in America through 1850 (Ann Arbor 1940, with three supplements published 1941-1954). Karpinski investigated the holdings of more than one hundred libraries and found that nine had purposefully collected in this field. According to his tabulated analysis, our collection would have occupied sixth rank, nearly approximating the holdings of Columbia University, exceeding those of Boston Public Library and New York Public Library. We offer 269 different works, plus 192 subsequent editions, for a total of 511 printed books, and in addition five manuscript ciphering and exercise books. Thirty-three eighteenth-century books are offered, fifty-five printed 1801-1810, sixty-five printed 1811-1820, ninety-five printed 1821-1830, 129 printed 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista.
1760. Etching with engraving for the "Veduta di Roma", 405 x 615 mm., Rome edition, third state with artist's address and price. The Palazzo della Consulta was only a recent addition to baroque Rome when depicted by Piranesi, having been erected in the 1730s. It was designed by Ferdinando Fuga for Pope Clement XII to house the Papal secretariat of the main council of state, the Sacra Congregazione della Consulta. However, it subsequently passed through many manifestations, at the turn of the century housing the Prefecture of Rome, after Italian unification becoming the residence of Prince Umberto I, and by the turn of the next century it was home to the Foreign Ministry. In the 1950s, it took on its current role as the Constitutional Court of Italy. The top of the facade is dominated by the large sculptural coat of arms of the Corsini family of Clement XII, as also seen at the Trevi Fountain. F.737; H.22; W-E.175

Plate : 'A Flemish Club'. Tavern scene with six men and a woman; one holding a tobacco paper over a bowl, looking at a companion, who smokes, holding a jug, with another standing behind them and a fourth urinating in an alcove on the left; two men and a seated woman by the hearth in the background to right. Mezzotint engraving on a verge type of hand-laid paper. Description: This original antique print was published in London ca. 1760.Artists and Engravers: This plate engraved by C. Corbutt after David Teniers. David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was a Flemish artist, born in Antwerp. He was the son of David Teniers the Elder, while his son and grandson also became painters. He was a wildly prolific painter, creating over 900 works. During his life he started the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, after having presided over the Antwerp guild of painters. Richard Purcell (1736 - 1766) was a native of Dublin and a pupil of John Brooks. After Brooks went to London in 1746, Purcell remained in Dublin for some time, working for the print-sellers and probably assisting Andrew Miller. Of his work done in Dublin twelve mezzotints are known, most of them signed R. Purcelle. Many of his prints are signed Chas. Corbutt, or C. Corbutt, an alias he adopted to hide his identity on account of his pecuniary embarrassments. Condition: Fine/good. CRISTIANI Girolamo Francesco
Brescia, Giambatista Rossini, 1760. Fowler Coll.. n. 95; Riccardi, I/col. 383: "Utile trattato". Comolli, Bibl.
