SPINAROSA (Filiberto Antonino).
S.l.n.d. (c. 1760). Petit in-folio. 1f. CVI. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Printed for S. Richardson, T. Osborne, C. Hitch, et alia, 1760 - 1758 [sic]. Respectively 492, 543, 483, 445, 664p., illustrated with 8 copper-engraved maps, genealogies, and a view, all these in the terminal volume. Ex library, find a "Library of Congress duplicate" stamp impression on each titlepage. Hardbounds in matching 8x5 inch speckled calf boards with red and black labelings gilt; textblocks and folded illustrations are (pace some foxing and toning) uniformly good, textblocks quite sound and square, the eight folded items (only three of which re Africa) in good shape, most blanks present; but the leather is shot. A not-often-resorted-to set evidently left to itself, the casings very powdery, only five separate labels currently intact, the last tome now stripped of spine panel entirely and its front board detached. As is, for recasing or possibly complete divesting of all leather traces to prevent spread of mouldered dust. The first three plates deal with Africa. Folded copperplate engravings from volume 18 are: (1) map of Libya/Egypt, image is 8x12 inches, mild foxing; (2) The Tribe of Koreish, genealogical tree (traces back to Mohammed); (3) map of Mauretania, Numidia, Gaetulia &c, 8x12, mild foxing --thereafter, nothing on Africa; (4) map of Arabia, Petraea and Deserta, 8x12, slight foxing; (5) lineage, Tribes of the naturalized Arabs, being the descendants of Ishmael, 12x13 inches; (6) lineage, Tribes of Kahtan aka Joktan, 13x14; (7) Ancient Gaul, 8x11, just a touch of foxing; (8) Plan of Ye Famed Temple of Montmorillon both Above and Under Ground with a … [Click Below for Full Description]

KAMPEN, Nicolas van et fils.
Cat. Lindley Libr., p. 231; Krelage, p. 17 etc.; cf. BMC NH, p. 956. First edition of a treatise on the cultivation of bulb flowers, signed by the author. The Dutch export of bulbs began to develop in the 17th century. Foreigners held the view that only the Dutch climate and soil were suitable for the cultivation of bulbs and that only Dutch florists possessed the necessary knowledge for this craft. European courts, with nobility and gentility following suit, bought their bulbs directly from Holland, with Haarlem as centre for this trade. Nicolaas van Kampen was among the circa 10 Haarlem florists who monopolized this lucrative business. He treats the hyacinth, the most popular bulb in the 18th century and a favourite of an important trendsetter like Madame de Pompadour, the tulip, the Persian buttercup and the anemone as well as other flowers.Curiously, our copy contains the author's signature on the verso of the title with the text "Les auteurs de cet ouvrage désavoüent tous les Exemplaires qui ne seront pas signés de leur propre Main." The Traité des fleurs a oignons was translated into English and German.Boards damaged; a good, untrimmed copy from the library of J.H. Krelage.

(6), 484 pp.; some light toning of the paper; a distinguished copy with ms. note at beginning "Ex Libris Josephi Uriot, historiarum Professoris et S.mi Wurtemb. Ducis Bibliothecarii", the bookplates of the musicologist Sir John Stainer (1840-1901), and of the pianist Alfred Cortot (1877-1962). First edition of a revolutionary treatise which brought about major reforms in ballet production. «No book has exerted so incalculable an influence for good on the manners and production of ballets and dances» (Beaumont, pp.134-5). «There has been considerable debate as to whether this issue or the one with the imprint "A Stuttgart, et se vend a Lyon" is the earlier... Apart from the title-page and the privilege leaf, the books are identical... The wording of the dedication suggests that although Noverre was, at the time of writing, in the service of the Duke of Wurtemberg, he had not yet taken up his appointment... These facts seem to point to the priority of the Lyon issue» (Fletcher, Forty Rare Dance Books, 34). Also Derra de Moroda, Dance Library, 1965, lists this issue first.
