Artist: Seutter Albrecht Karl d ; issued in: Augsburg; date: d1760 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Printed on 2 sheets joined together; - size (in cm): 56 x 98; - description: Map shows the area of Meissen in Saxonia with a decorative title cartouche and index.; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

BELLIN, Jacques Nicolas
c1760, French edition.. Map of the Falkland Islands. 120. Copper engraving. Later colour. Very good condition with nice margins. Size: 35 x 23 cm. (14 x 9 inches) An interesting map of the Falkland Islands with very scant detail. The outline of West Falkland is incomplete, and that of East Falkland fairly inaccurate. In January 1690, English sailor John Strong, captain of the Welfare, was heading for Puerto Deseado in Argentina, when he was driven off course by contrary winds. He reached the Sebald Islands instead, landing at Bold Cove. The only place names given on the map are the Sebald Islands and Baye Francois, now Berkeley Sound.

First edition, variant state; some copies of the book have a line of erratum on page 224 which is absent here, but with the erratum corrected in the text. Editions would be published in Edinburgh, Dublin and Cork later in the same year. Sackville had been stripped of his military position after refusing to allow a British cavalry charge in the Battle of Minden. He demanded a court martial believing that it would vindicate him, of which this is the record; not only did the court martial find him guilty, but declared him "unfit to serve his Majesty in any military capacity whatsoever". This was a surprisingly strong condemnation, although it was also a sentence designed to avoid a repeat of the execution of Admiral Byng three years earlier. London: Printed for S. Richardson, T. Osborne, C. Hitch, et alia, 1760. Hardcover. Respectively 492, 543, 483, 445, 664p., illustrated with 8 copper-engraved maps, genealogies, and a view, all these in the terminal volume. Ex library, find a "Library of Congress duplicate" stamp impression on each titlepage. Hardbounds in matching 8x5 inch speckled calf boards with red and black labelings gilt; textblocks and folded illustrations are (pace some foxing and toning) uniformly good, textblocks quite sound and square, the eight folded items (only three of which re Africa) in good shape, most blanks present; but the leather is shot. A not-often-resorted-to set evidently left to itself, the casings very powdery, only five separate labels currently intact, the last tome now stripped of spine panel entirely and its front board detached. As is, for recasing or possibly complete divesting of all leather traces to prevent spread of mouldered dust. The first three plates deal with Africa. Folded copperplate engravings from volume 18 are: (1) map of Libya/Egypt, image is 8x12 inches, mild foxing; (2) The Tribe of Koreish, genealogical tree (traces back to Mohammed); (3) map of Mauretania, Numidia, Gaetulia &c, 8x12, mild foxing --thereafter, nothing on Africa; (4) map of Arabia, Petraea and Deserta, 8x12, slight foxing; (5) lineage, Tribes of the naturalized Arabs, being the d escendants of Ishmael, 12x13 inches; (6) lineage, Tribes of Kahtan aka Joktan, 13x14; (7) Ancient Gaul, 8x11, just a touch of foxing; (8) Plan of Ye Famed Temple of Montmorillon both Above and Under Ground with a … [Click Below for Full Description]
