Sterne, Laurence
York and London, 1760-67 Nine volumes in five. Contemporary calf, morocco labels. Front free endpaper of vol. I detached, light touchups to spine of vol. I, light wear to joints. A fine set. An excellent copy of Tristram Shandy, one of the most innovative and ambitious works in English literature, from the library of Col. Ralph Isham, discoverer of the Boswell Papers. First edition. Signed by Sterne as usual in volumes 5, 7, and 9 to protect the book from piracy. After the first two volumes were rejected by Dodsley, the leading publisher of literature in London, Sterne revised them and had them published in York. The remaining volumes were published in London to great acclaim, though Johnson, Richardson, and Goldsmith expressed reservations on artistic and moral grounds. Johnson commented, "Nothing odd will do long. Tristram Shandy will not last." "Sterne's first genuine experiment in literature brought him in an instant a worldwide reputation" (DNB). This classic of English literature is one of the most innovative novels in the language and the progenitor of the "stream-of-consciousness" genre. The word "shandy," meaning "half-crazy," is fitting in this madcap, digressive novel, one of the strangest ever published. The famously inventive novel is also noteworthy for its fanciful typography and book design, such as the marbled paper leaf inserted at vol. 3, page 169, the blank page for the reader's imagined portrait of the widow Wadman (vol. 6, page 147), and the black page in the Alas, Poor Yorick! section (vol. 1, pp. 73-74). Because of its episodic nature, fine sets of … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: C. Hitch and L. Hawke, et al, 1760. Fifth edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. xvii, 474 [484] p. 8 fold-out illustrations, the first three coloured. Two fold-out vouchers. Numerous in-text tables. Binding repaired. Pencil and ink notes on endpapers. Damp stains affecting upper corners. Faint marginalia page 296. Small worm hole in bottom half of page affects second half of book but does not become large enough to affect text until about page 408 onwards. A "gauger" was an officer whose business it was to ascertain the contents of casks, mainly to assist in the prevention of illicit shipments of alcohol. The job of an exciseman, however, also involved checking shipments of soap, starch, candles, coffee, tea, chocolate, etc. and rules for these are also given. Special sections give advice on how to become an excise officer and "cask-Gauging" as practised in the Port of London. Judging by the book's thickness, there was a lot to learn.

WATELET, Claude-Henri (1718-1816)
de H. L. Guerin & L. F. Delatour, rue Saint jacques, à Saint Thomas d'Aquin : 1760 : Paris : 8vo: a8 b4 A-I8 K4 (E1 signed E* and H2 signed Hij* are presumably cancels, 88 leaves, pp. xxiv 152. Etched device on title signed 'pierre in C H Watelet sc 1860', 5 vignettes and 8 portrait medallions similarly signed, 10 culs-de-lampe, three signed 'margueritte le comte sc 1760'. : Watelet's didactic poem on art, dealing with design, colour and invention, won him election to the Académie française. A talented etcher, Watelet's decorative vignettes and culs-de-lampe were praised by Diderot who said that they should be cut out and framed and the rest of the book burned, although Watelet had been charged with writing the entry on engraving for the Encyclopédie (in vol. 7, 1757). Watelet's etchings are after designs by Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre (1714-1789) and three of the culs-de-lampe were etched by Marguerite Lecomte (1717-1800) who shared a ménage à trois with Watelet and her husband Jacques Lecomte for 40 years.A model of French book design on a small scale with a vignette (headpiece) to start each section of the poem and a cul-de-lampe (tailpiece) at the end. There was also a large paper de-luxe issue but this does no favours to the layout, given the small type-size used for the poem, equivalent to roughly 9 on 91/2pt, and the already generous margins. Antony Griffiths uses this book as an example of the combination of intaglio and letterpress, noting that the platemarks overlap the text which was printed first (The Print Before Photography, 2016, p. 182).A calligraphic manusc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, Na Officina de Franc. Ambr. Didot, 1760. XVI,382,(2 blank) p. Calf 17.5 cm (Details: Back gilt with floral elements, boards with triple fillet gilt borders and gilt corner pieces, the edges of the bookblock also gilt. Endpaper marbled) (Condition: Some faint wear to the binding. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Front pastedown slightly damaged by the removal of an older bookplate. Library stamp on the front flyleaf) (Note: Port-Royal was a cistercian monastery for women, in Magny-les-Hameaux, south-west of Paris. Several schools were founded there at the beginning of the 17th century, the so-called 'Petites-Écoles de Port-Royal'. The 'Little-Schools' were famous for the exceptional quality of the education that was provided there. The masters of Port Royal recognized that Latin had lost its utilitarian value, for it was no longer the only language of the learned. As Comenius had recommended, they adopted the vernacular as the ordinary medium of instruction. Their ingenuity to find the easiest and best teaching methods is preserved in the schoolbooks of the Port-Royalists. The masters of Port-Royal tried to remove difficulties from the path of the learner, and wanted to render instruction as pleasant as possible. Teachers therefore should not speak Latin, but speak the same vernacular as the pupil, and all explanations, and every grammar and lexicon should be adapted to the mother-tongue. The Port-Royalists found that children must especially be practised in the art of translation from Latin and Greek 'because the concentration needed for weighing all the phrases, an … [Click Below for Full Description]

[HANDEL, George Frederic (1685-1759)] - [MAINWARING, John (d. 1807) and other authors]
London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1760. 8vo (8 x 5 inches). [iv], 208pp. Half-title. Contemporary English speckled calf. Rebacked, some offsetting from binding at edges of preliminaries and terminal leaves, free endpaper slightly chipped at edges, L1-2 with offset stain. Provenance: armorial bookplate from a member of the Clayton family with motto "quod sors ferit fermus." FIRST EDITION of the first full biography of Handel in any language, with a catalogue of his works. It also provides a summary of music at the end of the Baroque era. The English theologian Mainwaring collaborated with John Christopher Smith, Jr. and Robert Price on the text, and the catalogue was prepared by James Harris. The biography occupies the first 143 pages and is followed by the catalogue of his works, divided into Church Music, Theatrical Music, and Chamber Music. This is followed, on pages 159 to the end, by observations on Handel's works (by Price). "Though he was evidently conversant with music, he devoted most of his attention to the broad outlines of Handel's life and to a multitude of charming anecdotes about the great man, reserving the detailed discussion of the music for Price's portion of the book. Mainwaring probably obtained most of his information from John Christopher Smith, Jr. (1712-1795), a composer who--like his father--worked for Handel for many years in a variety of capacities and consequently knew him well. It is not clear if Mainwaring ever had the opportunity to interview Handel directly" ("Histories of Music," exhibit at Yale University Libraries, Winter-Spring 2011).
