Lyttelton, George]; [Montagu, Elizabeth]
W. Sandby, in Fleet-street, London, 1760. First edition of this collection of imagined conversations between historical figures, featuring three contributions by Elizabeth Montagu, "Queen of the Bluestockings." Dialogues of the dead, as a genre, date back to Lucian and Erasmus, but were particularly suited for the eighteenth-century English literary salon, where a balance of classical learning and conversational wit was prized. In this volume, Louis IV speaks with Peter the Great, Fernando Cortez with William Penn, Lucian with Rabelais, and Pericles with Cosimo de Medici. The primary author of the dialogues is George Lyttleton, later secretary to the Prince of Wales and Chancellor of the Exchequer. An "amiable, absent-minded man," Lyttleton was a patron of Alexander Pope and Henry Fielding, who dedicated Tom Jones to him, and was so well known for his inattention that he became a cautionary tale in one of Lord Chesterfield's letters to his son (DNB). The final three dialogues were contributed anonymously by Lyttleton's friend Elizabeth Montagu, whose London salon was frequented by the likes of Edmund Burke, David Garrick, Joshua Reynolds, Horace Walpole, and Samuel Johnson, although Montagu would later sever ties with Johnson over his caustic treatment of Lyttleton in Lives of the Poets. These three conversations represent Montagu's first appearance in print, and her only work to be published in her lifetime besides her 1769 Essay on the Writings and Genius of Shakespear. In her final dialogue, between a disapproving Plutarch and "a modern bookseller," Montagu offers a sati … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAREY, Mathew
1760. Philadelphia: Carey, Matthew. unbound. Map. Engraving with outline hand coloring. Images measures 17.25 x 13.75 inches. Page measures 21.5 x 17.25 inches. This elegant map of Brazil emphasizes the region's terrain and rivers as they fill the space encompassed by the eastern coast. A simple, hand-colored yellow line highlights the point where land meets sea, creating a visual rhythm that complements the stylized hachures indicating elevation. Important rivers, ports, cities, and surrounding states are labeled. The map appeared in Carey's "General Atlas" and is in good condition with wide margins as issues. Shows some foxing and staining. Some wear along center fold line, with two inch tear at bottom.Raised in a family of publishers and book sellers, Mathew Carey (1760--1839) became one of the most important figures of early American cartography. Carey was based in Philadelphia, where he owned a publishing firm and oversaw a cottage system of independent artists and craftsmen. His important "Atlas" was the first American-published atlas of the United States. Furthermore, the maps his firm produced represent some of the best quality and most informative depictions of the United States in the early period after it gained independence. This map is a wonderful example of his fine work.

A LADY (GLASSE, Hannah)
A. Millar, J. & R. Tonson, W. Strahan, P. Davey and B. Law, London, 1760. 384 pages - (24 ind.) First published in 1747, the book was reprinted within its first year of publication - 20 editions in the 18th century followed. It was not uncommon for a female scribe to keep her identity hidden, but by using the title "A LADY", erroneous claims of authorship flourished. A common narrative (true or false?) in Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, the publisher Dilly hints that John Hill was the true author of The Art of Cookery, stating - "women can spin very well, but they cannot make a good book of cookery." Oh dear, these gents were living in the dark ages, truly. Unfortunatley for Glasse, her finanacial situaltion was never secure and se filed for bankruptsy and even spent some time in debters prison.

GALILEO. [BRESSANI (Gregorio)]:
In Padoua, Nella Stamperia Penada, Appresso Angelo Comino, 1760, 1760. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 193 x 121 mms., pp. [vi], 204, original limp boards, paper label at top of spine; lower portion of text lightly water-stained throughout. Bressani (1703 - 1771) began his literary career publishing poems and short essays as well as a treatise on the Italian language in 1740. The present work was preceded by a similar one, l modo difilosofare introdotto da Galilei ragguagliato al Saggio di Platone e di Aristotele (1753). In the "Proemio," Bressani notes that one of the greatest impediments that Galileo had to overcome was the persistent deference by physicists to the hypotheses of Aristotle. Three editions of the work were published in 1760.
