Chez Briasson, à Paris 1760, In 8 (12,5x19,7cm), (6) xxij, 404pp. (2) 35Pl., relié. - New edition, the original seems to have appeared in 1755; illustrated with a frontispiece by Gazot, engraved by Manner and 34 folding plates at the end of volume engraved by Meunier, and a large folding map of France drawn by Good. Full mottled calf time. Back tooled raised. part of title in red morocco. 3 corners bumped. Good copy. Undoubtedly one of the best generals treated gnomonic also well illustrated, produced under the auspices of the Academy of Science by Benedictine scholar and scientist François Bespine de Celles (1709-1779). The advantage of this treaty is entirely contained in the clarity of his practice and exposure, which allow easy and thorough application. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Selbstverlag, Frankfurt 1760 - (1) ff. engraved title-page with putti and calligraphy instruments, (3) ff., 54 engraved plates, (1) p. ¿Nachricht.¿ Bound in early half-vellum with patterned paper over boards; faint damp mark to upper left corner of some leaves. Generally fresh. An unusually fresh example of the rare first edition of a Baroque German penmanship textbook self-published by this ¿Schul-, Schreib- und Rechnenmeister¿ from Frankfurt am Main, with 54 engraved plates. After assuring his readers that these methods have been honed throughout his tenure as a teacher of penmanship, Schirmer begins with simple morphological exercises¿single ligatures and glyphs¿that soon evolve into the writing of whole words, sentences, and finally paragraphs, a process that is repeated for each script: Kurrent, Kanzlei (chancellery), Fraktur, and Lateinische Cursiv (with a page on Rotunda and Quadrata). While this accretative method is not uncommon, Schirmer¿s use of dotted or unbroken lines to mark the angle, length, and space between typographical features is more unusual¿as is a plate comprised exclusively of tails, loops and figure-eights, to be practiced as if they were capital letters. More visually striking are the 25 plates that follow, among which are a number of features rarely seen in contemporary Schreibmeisterbucher: entire plates devoted to a single word, exercises in trompe l¿oeil, and the juxtaposition of detailed figurative engravings with their more decorative counterparts. In these plates, Schirmer first provides a broad selection of edifying quotes in each script, often with elaborately decorated headlines. The ornamentation reaches a pitch in two plates of single words¿Wir and Ich¿whose capitals blossom into elegant intertwining mazes of leaves, scrolls, and fasces. The volume also contains a plate in which the crosshatched and shaded figures of a horse, swan, soldier, etc., are mirrored in the looping command-of-hand drawings popularized by the 17th-century Italian masters. Yet Schirmer¿s last exercises, such as the trompe-l¿oeil calling-cards, sample receipts and formal business letters, seem to suggest a uniquely German sense of calligraphy, not as fanciful (i.e. Italian) doodling, but as an artistic discipline of purpose and profit. OCLC: Library of Congress, Winterthur, Newberry, Metropolitan Museum. * Bonacini 1634, Doede 176; S.K.B. 4917. Not in Hofer (or Osley). New editions of the work appeared in 1772 and 1773; this is the earliest edition we have been able to locate. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ELIXIR DE VIE. . . [manuscript caption title]

ca. 1760s], [France - Bifolium, approximately 10 x 7½ inches. [3]pp. of text. Early folds, light dampstains in corners, mild foxing. Very good, untrimmed, in a fine custom cloth folding case with printed paper label. 18th-century manuscript recipe for the "long life elixir" closely associated with a 17th-century Swedish doctor known variously as "Samst," "Vornets," "Xermet," "Yerner," "Yernest," "Gernest," and, here, "Guernai." The recipe, which has ancient origins and a millennia-long history of revision and rediscovery, has been widely credited in its present form to the Swedish doctor at least since the 1760s, when several similar manuscripts and a handful of printed notices appeared throughout France. In a 2012 article in the REVUE D’HISTOIRE DE LA PHARMACIE, "> ou > précieux manuscrit de > nouvellement découvert," Jean-Pierre Grelaud argues persuasively for a 1700-1710 date of another recently discovered—and, at this point, earliest known—comparable manuscript, suggesting a date no later than the turn of the 18th century for the death of the Swedish doctor. The true name of the doctor has never been conclusively determined, nor specific details (or proof) of his life uncovered. It is certain, however, that his formula either was derived from or shared common roots with recipes Paracelsus discussed during the 16th century. A consistent key element was Venetian theriac (here, "thériaque de Venise," known also as "Venice treacle" and therica andromachi), which is usually thought to have originated in Greece, particularly with Andromachus the Elder of Crete, in the first century C.E. This compound traditionally contained viper flesh, scorpion venom, opium, and myrrh among its scores of ingredients and appears to have traveled as far as China in its first several centuries. The elixir of life, in general, appears to have origins as old as Babylon and was discussed extensively by European and Arabic alchemists, eventually attaching itself to the legends of Nicolas Flamel and the Comte de Saint Germain. Most early copies of the present version of the recipe inform us that the original manuscript was found in the papers of a Swedish doctor who died at an advanced age (almost invariably 104, but here 110) from a fall from a horse. The "secret" had existed in his family for "several centuries," and daily consumption helped his grandfather, father, and mother live similarly long lives (in the present copy, to 130, 112, and 104 years, respectively). The handful of known 18th-century examples of the recipe are remarkably consistent regarding the elixir’s ingredients and their proportions, method of preparation, and uses. When there is some variation among the lists of ingredients, it tends to occur in the proportion of aloe (this copy shows the greatest amount, at "un once et trois gros" to the single "gros" of most other elements) and rhubarb (here, a gros and a half) and in the specific names used for the different ingredients (e.g., "safran du levant" here is usually "le meilleur safran," sometimes "d’orient" or "oriental"). Unique to the present manuscript is an interesting final paragraph referring to a "frere Nicolas de friardel," presumably a monk at the Augustinian priory of Saint-Cyr at Friardel in Calvados, Lower Normandy. Brother Nicolas has mentioned that using the elixir regularly for two years has largely cured him of a "cruel gout" which had "robbed him of the use of his feet and hands."         Poésies de M Haller

Berne: Aux dépens de la société, 1760. Fine. Aux dépens de la société, Berne 1760, 3 vol. petit in-8 (10,5x17cm), viij ; 9-207 pp. (1) et 196pp. et 254pp., relié. - New edition retouched and enhanced. Full blond calf granita time. Back smooth decorated with flower boxes and golden jewels, coins title and volume numbers garnet and tan morocco. Cuts outlined a golden net. All marbled. Bookplate exceptional pen, library Joseph-Ignace Guillotin guards on each volume. Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotin is an heir of the Enlightenment, a member of the famous Masonic Lodge of the Nine Sisters. He makes friends with Benjamin Franklin, Lavoisier, Bailly, Buffon or Lacepede, and writers and artists such as Condorcet, Voltaire, Restif de la Bretonne and Moreau Le Jeune. In his dressing Guillotin also met his future father-Antoine-Claude Saugrain, printer and bookseller soon appointed chief librarian of the Arsenal by the Comte d'Artois. Great scholar, Guillotin is also a major player in the French Revolution from its outset. Initiator in 1788 of the Petition of six bodies, claiming the vote by poll and not least the States-General, it is also the one who led the members in the room of the Tennis Court. In April 1789, he wrote with Bailly Booklet grievances of the Third Estate of Paris which established the first version of Human Homme.La Criminal Law Reform shall submit it to the Assembly the same philanthropic concern for equality with men before the law: A single sentence regardless of the rank of the criminal; lack of consequences for his family; non-forfeiture of the convicted; and especially one type of execution "by the effect of a simple mechanism. ".The Guillotine, inspired by vintage prints and improved by Dr. Antoine Louis machinery, is an instrument that is supposed to have killed painlessly and replace execution of the regime's main modes: decapitation by ax saber or sword, hanging and roue.Or if book of poetry Haller is a precious relic of the library near the great scientists and artists of the time humanist, it also allows us to suppose Guillotin knowledge on medical issues raised by his invention.En Indeed, Albrecht von Haller is not only a poet. It is also an anatomist and physiologist renowned, best known for his research on irritability, highlighting the persistence of movements in parts of the body. "Haller wondered how the life of an animal is still possible after removal of the brain and reported number of observations relating to insects, cold-blooded quadrupeds (...) that remain for a few days able to walk and even to mate" (see Canguilhem, Formation of the concept of reflex the eighteenth and eighteenth centuries) .OR this reflection is crucial in the process of Guillotin, since mechanization is primarily intended to end the suffering caused by the executions. If from 1752, Dr. Antoine Louis participated in the dispute over the "signs of death" we have no record of interest in the issue Guillotin. The presence of a work of Haller in Guillotin allows us to assume that the doctor philanthropist was fully aware of the scientific debate on the basic question of the immediacy of death due to the removal of the head. So knowingly uttered as Guillotin before the Assembly this sentence (the unfortunate statement earned him a bad reputation), "With my machine, I'll blow your head with a wink, and you do not suffer. Mechanical falls like lightning, head flies, blood gushes, man is no more. " --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! »

The second sheet after the title page bearing the signature well A2. Full Calf porphyry time. Smooth back decorated. Piece modern title redone. Rubbed back and epidermis, caps frayed, cracked joint, corners bumped. Comedy philosophers began a long feud and stirred the fire between philosophers and non-philosophers, there Palissot portraiturait satirically major philosophers whose Diderort and especially Rousseau.

Notated on two staves: solo violin and figured bass. Signed "P. Gavinies," at foot of dedication. From the collection of André Meyer, Paris, with handstamp to verso of title: "Provenant de la collection musicale d'André Meyer Décédé en Mai 1974 F. Meyer Octobre 84." Some soiling and offsetting; pp. 9-10 ceased at lower right corner; final leaf creased at upper outer corner; small stians to dedication and pp. 15-16; inner margin of title guarded. . First Edition, first issue. RISM G736. Lesure p. 225. Hirsch III, 212. "Gaviniés was best known to his contemporaries as a violinist; nearly every aspect of his playing was praised... [His] works for the violin, comprising sonatas, duos, concertos and études, reveal something of his own virtuosity. All of the sonatas and duos have three movements. Many of the slow middle movements are romances. In the early works, some of the finales take the form of a moderate theme and variations or a minuet. The first movements of the second set of sonatas usually have two strongly contrasting themes. The entire range of the violin is exploited, with unusual emphasis on the lower register. Double stopping is employed in various ways and there is much ornamentation, despite the broad, sweeping, melodic curves. Gaviniés was extremely explicit regarding dynamics and articulation, although fingerings were added infrequently. In the duos, the violins have parts of equal importance." Jeffrey Cooper and Anthony Ginter in Grove Music Online. The Meyer collection, formed over a period of some 75 years, was one of the most important collections of printed music, musical autographs, and books on music, with hundreds of items dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

Histoire d'Angleterre, contenant la maison de Plantagenet ; contenant la maison de Tudor ; contenant la maison de Stuart

New edition, and probably the first in-4 that brings together three stories published between 1760 and 1765.Traduction Ms. Belot, described by the author himself. Full sheepskin marbled time. Back to nerves decorated with nets. Piece blue morocco title and volume number of brown morocco. Scuffs in caps tail of six volumes. Some gaps on the boards, due to galleries and to the last nerve of Volume I. Border lower flat bare half a cm. Good copy, however, very fresh. The History of England is undoubtedly the most popular work and was a great success of the philosopher David Hume, the father of philosophical empiricism and its importance in the history of philosophy is the measure of Descartes France. The story could not but interest the philosopher effect since it is an unparalleled amount of experience, as such, it is a must for those seeking knowledge; the historian is an empiricist, since can not simply perceive the causal links between facts and events, it is constrained in its vision to design a movement. However, for Hume, there is no way to conceptualize the history and structure typically follows the chronology of events, it is a story provided detailed and England, which extends from the arrival of the Romans in Revolution of 1688; it is divided into three historic and dynastic contemporary: the house of Plantagenet, the Stuarts and the Tudors. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         See-Buch, oder: Gründlicher ausführlicher Bericht... Die Sechste Auflage

Lübeck: Peter Böckmann, 1760. Small quarto, 99 pp. & 6 unnumbered leaves, title-page with damage (upper corner with loss, laid down, marked, old stamps including deaccession stamp), first leaf with an old repair along fore-edge (not affecting text), last leaf with repair to gutter; some significant wear but withal very good in original marbled paper boards. "... Bought at sea of Captn. Cook..." A book with a plausible claim to have been owned by Captain Cook. This is the sixth edition of a rare title, the first navigation manual of the Baltic Sea. As is generally the case with such working books of navigation all editions are extremely scarce. This work has a tantalising and plausible ownership inscription in a very old hand to the front pastedown which reads: "Henry Murck his book bought at Sea of Captn. Cook". This intriguing note is clearly meant to refer to the great explorer himself, who had spent many years sailing on colliers in the Baltic Sea before he joined the Royal Navy in 1755, and would have always had an interest in navigational guides and pilots. In the 1760s, right up until he sailed on the Endeavour, Cook was doing his superb work in mapping coastlines in Newfoundland and North America, but it is certainly very likely that he would have kept up with any work being published regarding his old stamping ground. By the same token, while Cook is not known to have had much German, the language in which this book is written, as a good navy-man of the Hannoverian era he was surrounded by German speakers whenever he sailed. The name of the owner of the book, "Murck", is certainly one to conjure with, as that name recurs in the world of contemporary shipping: a Henry Murck is, for example, listed as joining the Marine Society of the City of New York in 1795, while an L. Murck, to cite just one meaningful example, is listed as a having a 1798-registered ship out of Gothenburg (Sweden) in the Register of Shipping for 1811. The Murck family, that is, show every sign of having been established sailors in the region in the late eighteenth century, which certainly adds weight to the early provenance. Without doubt there is a firm connection between the book and the naval officer named Henry Murck who, after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, was one of the founding officers of the modern Prussian Navy in Stralsund, not least because this copy has a later stamp for a research library in Stralsund, too neat a coincidence to ignore. This Henry Murck lived into the late 1840s, but it is no stretch of the imagination to suggest that he may have had a family connection to an earlier generation of the Murck family, and given their sea-going roots, a meeting with Captain Cook is certainly not impossible!

Citing earlier royal proclamations issued previously by Charles III concerning clemency for prisoners, this cedula reprints texts of decrees from January and February 1760. While most prisoners were to receive pardons, a long list of exceptions, based on the January 28 cedula, is provided. These included those accused of secular and religious treason, killing a priest, counterfeiting money, arson, blasphemy, sodomy, robbery, falsehoods, and duelling. Numerous other details regarding the earlier clemencies are also provided. The present royal amnesty was to be distributed to the Viceroys, Presidents, Audiencias, Governors, and other judges throughout the Indies in order that this resolution by properly executed. This copy, accomplished in manuscript at Buen Retiro on December 28, 1770, is signed by Juan Manuel Crespo with the additional annotation, "Yo El Rey. Por mandado del Rey Nuestro Señor." A manuscript inscription on the blank verso of the final printed page, dated February 27, 1762, confirms that the decree had been reviewed two days earlier by the President and other high officials in Santiago de Chile. A manuscript note in a separate hand on the recto and verso of the integral blank leaf provides additional information about the receipt of the document in Santiago in 1762. A rare and highly informative proclamation regarding royal pardons to be enacted throughout the Spanish New World and in Spain. Not in OCLC, Medina (BHA), or Palau.
