        L'uomo sulla cremagliera

1760. "Acquaforte, bulino, tinta allo zolfo e bruniture, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. "Etching, engraving, sulphur tint and burnishing, 1750, signed at lower left. From the Carceri set, plate II of the second edition. Example in the secondo state of six described by Robison, from the contemporary roman edition (Robison dated to 1761). A magnific impression, printed with black ink on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB"", with margins, very good condition. Magnificent example, from the contemporary second edition, printed on thick paper typically used by Piranesi. Undoubtedly these is the best known and most celebrated series among the works by Piranesi. The series, datable around 1745, consisted of fourteen plates, with the title page bearing the title Invenzioni Capric di Carceri all'acquaforte datte in luce da Giovanni Buzard in Roma, mercante al Corso. In the second issue, immediately subsequent, the title presents the publisher's name rightly corrected in Bouchard. There is no doubt that the innovative idea of this work comes from a very close connection with the series titled Prima Parte di Architetture not only for the proximity of the dates, but also because both the series reflect the Piranesi's precise ideology on architecture. The series was re - published fifteen years later , in 1761." Robison 43 II/VI, Hind 2, Focillon 25.

        Poésies de M. Haller

Aux dépens de la société, 1760. - Aux dépens de la société, Berne 1760, 3 vol. petit in - 8 (10,5x17cm), viij ; 9 - 207 pp. (1) et 196pp. et 254pp., relié. - Nuova edizione ritoccata e migliorata. Tempo granita vitello biondo completa. »

        L'Art de Peindre.

1760 1760 - WATELET, Claude-Henri. L'Art de Peindre. xxii, 152 pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, title-page vignette, 13 etched headpiece portrait medallions all by J.B.M. Pierre and engraved by Watelet, 10 elegant tailpieces- 4 by Marguerite Lecomte and 5 by Pierre all etched by Watelet, and two full-page line engravings of Antinoüs and Venus de Medicis by Pierre and etched by Watelet. 12mo., 158 x 89 mm, elegantly bound in near-contemporary English vertical straight-grained morocco, Greek key border ornaments, a.e.g. Paris: Guerin et Delatour, 1760. First Edition, the octavo edition, issued simultaneously in a quarto format. An elegant French treatise on the art of painting illustrated with a total of 27 images either etched or engraved by the author Claude-Henri Watelet. The portraits include: Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, Titian, Coreggio, Tintoretto, etc. The French painter Watelet (1718-1786) was a member of the famously wealthy Fermiers Généraux, which allowed him to pursue his interests as an amateur painter, a respected etcher, a writer on the arts and a connoisseur of gardens. As a close friend of Francois Boucher, Hubert Robert and Madame de Pompadour, Watelet was well-positioned to write with some insight on the prevalent theories of painting and art during the Ancien Regime. Watelet's book was divided into two parts: the first a long prose poem on the art of painting, containing sections on design, colour, picturesque painting, and poetic invention. The second part offers contemporary reflections of proportions, painting of the human figure, the movement of figures, aspects of beauty, the harmony of light and colours, the expression of the passions, etc. He was a contributor to the Diderot Encyclopédie on painting and engraving; he an honorary associate of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, and in 1760 he was elected to the Académie française after the publication of his L'Art de peindre. Watelet was also an early patron of Greuze. who painted the famous portrait of Watelet dressed in silver-coloured silk, with an artist's calipers in hand facing a bronze reduction of the Venus de' Medici on his table (see plate #2 page 72 of this volume). PROVENANCE: J. Taylor with his name gilt-stamped on front cover (perhaps John Taylor (1745-1806), English landscape painter, close friend of David Garrick and referred to by Benjamin Franklin as "the best landscape painter in England"; Lucien Tissot Dupont with red leather ex-libris; Peter Wick with ex-libris; Edmond Lincoln. Newton/March 12th 1761"Historical BackgroundIn 1760, future Declaration of Independence signer John Hancock lived in London while learning the English side of his Thomas Hancock's merchant firm. Thomas, his uncle, had adopted John upon the death of his father in 1744. Here, the 23-year-old writes to younger brother Ebenezer, sending season's greetings, and encouraging his sibling to work diligently to build himself up in business, considering the advantage of family connections given to the two orphans. When John returned to America in 1761, Thomas's health had declined to the point that John began playing a greater role in the business. His appeal to Ebenezer to "write.by every oppry [opportunity]. & acquaint me more particularly with the Circumstances of my Uncle's Family"may have reflected his uncle's poor condition. He notes his sister Mary's marriage to Richard Perkins, and inquires about the rest of the family, wishing to be "Remembered in the strongest Terms of Affection to my Uncle & Aunt" Thomas and Lydia Hancock. The "Hannah & Betsy" to whom he refers were aunts, both women being the sisters of Thomas. Most interestingly, he inquires about "Molly," asks if "Cato" was behaving, is curious if"Agniss" was pregnant or having children, queries whether"Prince" still had the gout, and if"Hannibal" remained"peevish."These five individuals were the Hancock family slaves, (although Molly, a maid, was possibly white) who lived with the family in the Hancock mansion on.         Milton's Poetical Works: Paradise Lost: A Poem in Twelve Books and Paradise Regain'd: A Poem in Four Books. To Which is Added Samson Agonistes and Poems Upon Several Occasions

Birmingham: Printed by John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson, 1760 Two volumes. Finely bound in contemporary full red morocco, with five raised bands to the spines, contrasting brown title labels lettered in gilt, with decorative flower and leaf devices to the spine in gilt, boards decorated in gilt, board edges tooled in gilt, all edges marbled, red marbled endpapers. Very good, with wear and rubbing to edges, minor toning to the spine and board edges, bright gilt, the slightest bowing to the boards, spines lightly cracked and holding inside the covers, otherwise sturdy bindings, former owners' bookplates to the front pastedowns, Vol. I with a former owner's 1779 inscription to the title page, a few very faint spots to the flyleaves, otherwise bright and clean interiors. Overall, a bright, unsophisticated set in a beautiful contemporary binding. Gaskell 9-10. This edition of Milton's Poetical Works was published as an unbound two volume set by John Baskerville in 1760. As originally issued, Volume II originally contained the biographical "Life of Milton," but this copy's former owner chose to have it bound into the front of Volume I. Paradise Lost is a blank-verse poem that relates the story of Adam and Eve's expulsion from the idyllic Garden of Eden. Originally published in ten books, Milton revised the first edition by breaking two longer chapters in half, creating a total of twelve books. Like Virgil's Aeneid, Paradise Lost is half the length of both of Homer's epics. Milton began composing Paradise Lost after he had gone completely blind; he memorized his verses and orated them to friends and family for inscription. Although this process was due to disability rather than lack of modern technology, the oration of the poem further solidifies this text's ties to earlier epic poetry. Paradise Regain'd is Milton's sequel text to Paradise Lost, focusing on the devil's forty-day temptation of Jesus and the ultimate triumph of good over evil. While the former concerns the temptation of man, the latter explores the temptation of God himself.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

The book of common prayer and administration of the sacraments : and other rites and ceremonies of the church according to the use of the Church of England, together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, pointed as they are to be fung or faid in Churches.

The book of common prayer and administration of the sacraments : and other rites and ceremonies of the church according to the use of the Church of England, together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, pointed as they are to be fung or faid in Churches.LONDON : Printed by Thomas Baskett, Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty, and by the Assigns of Robert Baskett, 1760.A product of the English Reformation following its break with Rome, The Book of Common Prayer was a prayer book used by the Anglican Church during its Communion and Liturgical services, usually containing Morning and Evening prayers, the Litany, the Holy Communion as well as orders for Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage and Burial. This book was essential to the churchgoers of the time, and those that could afford it did so; apparently, several vicars of the time were shamed into conformance with the Book of Common Prayer by their newly-empowered congregations. Truly, The Book of Common Prayer played an influential role in the religious and cultural development of England during the 16th and 17th century. Original leather with age related weathering and wear, as shown with boards firm at the hinges; the spine with raised bands. Within, both the Book of Common Prayer and Psalter remain complete. Light browning to some edges, a few instances of stains (moreso on last leaf), some chipping and a few small losses, a few leaves in front and back tatty with loss and some restorations, some loss of letterpress, back end page is missing. Forgiving a few flaws, overall still presented nicely within, as shown.A unique touch. Measures 7 inches by 4.5 inches by 3 inches thick.

        Giphantie.

2 p.l., 176 pp.; 2 p.l., 174 pp. Two vols. in one. Small 8vo, cont. mottled polished calf, spine nicely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. "A Babylone" [Paris]: 1760. First edition of this unusual imaginary voyage, describing a utopian community in the quicksands of the desert of Africa; it is a book of fantasies or prophetic fiction à la Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. It is most remarkable for its highly accurate forecast of photography in Chapter 18. Tiphaigne (1722-74), physician and author, wrote a series of novels, some anonymously, much in the spirit of Rationalism and the Enlightenment. He anticipated a number of inventions including synthetic food, photography, and television. Giphantie (a transposition of the letters of the author's last name) "contains certain fanciful allusions to the possibility of producing photographic images and provoked even very recently a great deal of discussion...in his book the first appearance of an original idea, namely, the production of images by light, was met."-Eder, History of Photography, pp. 89-90. We quote a portion of the extended passage from the English translation of 1761: "You know that the rays of light, reflected from different bodies, form a picture, and paint the image reflected on all polished surfaces, for instance, on the retina of the eye, on water, and on glass. The elementary [i.e. elemental] spirits have sought to fix these fleeting images; they have composed a subtle matter, very viscous and quick to harden and dry, by means of which a picture is formed in the twinkling of an eye...The mirror represents the objects faithfully, but retains them not; our canvas shows them with the same exactness, and retains them all. This impression of the image is instantaneous, and the canvas is immediately carried away into some dark place. An hour later the impression is dry, and you have a picture the more valuable in that it cannot be imitated by art or destroyed by time." Fine copy with the engraved armorial bookplate of the duc François de Bournonville. ❧ Gernsheim, The History of Photography, pp. 35-36.

An introduction to the law relative to trials at nisi prius.

First Irish edition, following the London first of the previous year, which in turn was based on Buller and Bathurst's 1760 Institute of the Law Relative to Trials at Nisi Prius. The materials that formed the basis of this work, attributed here to "a learned Judge," were originally compiled by Earl Henry Bathurst for his private use; his labors were adapted and incorporated into a more widely published form by Sir Francis Buller. The sections cover actions founded upon torts and upon contracts, injuries affecting personal property and real property, criminal prosecutions relative to civil rights, "evidence in general," and "General Matters relative to Trials." The Introduction was published by => Elizabeth Watts, later Lynch, the widow and successor of bookseller Richard Watts; the volume opens and closes with advertisements for other legal works either at the press or just published by Watts. This edition is uncommon: ESTC and WorldCat locate only eight U.S. institutional holdings.

Figures of the most Beautiful, Useful, and Uncommon Plants described in The Gardeners' Dictionary. To which are added, Their Descriptions, and an Account of the Classes to which they belong.

London: printed for the Author, and sold by John Rivington, A. Millar, et al., [1755-] 1760. - 2 volumes. Folio (17 2/8 x 11 inches). Engraved vignette on dedication leaf, 300 fine hand-colored engraved plates (including two folding with small closed tears near the gutter), many printed in green or sepia, Thomas Jefferys, and J. Mynde, after Georg Ehret (16), Johann S. Müller, Richard Lancake, J. Bartram, and W. Houston, woodcut headpiece and initial (some minor offsetting). Contemporary half-calf, marbled paper boards (extremities scuffed with some surface-wear). Provenance: Near contemporary ownership inscription of Ben Palmer on each title-page. " the most distinguished and influential British gardener of the eighteenth century" (DNB). First edition, and an attractive and unsophisticated copy, originally published in 50 parts of 6 plates each. Although Miller's plan had originally been to "exhibit the Figures of One or more Species of all the known Genera of Plants", he had ultimately been obliged by the expenses of production to "contract his Plan, and confine it to those Plants only, which are either curious in themselves, or may be useful in Trades, Medicine, &c., including the Figures of such new Plants as have not been noticed by any former Botanists" (Preface). Preceded by his celebrated "The Gardeners Dictionary" (which ran to eight editions (1732-1768) during Miller's lifetime his works were commended at the time for being ".drawn from nature in the best state of flowering, and for including illustrations of fruit and seed as they ripened" (DNB). In 1722 Miller was appointed by Hans Sloane and the Society of Apothecaries as gardener for their Physic Garden at Chelsea. A condition of Sloane's deed of conveyance of the garden to the apothecaries was that they present annually to the Royal Society fifty dried specimens grown in the garden in the previous year. This necessitated the continuous introduction of new plants, achieved only by Miller's wide correspondence: "from various parts of the world. Exchange with John Bartram of Philadelphia, a collector of plants in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, and elsewhere, was particularly fruitful. Kalm [a student of Linneaus at Uppsala] observed that 'the principal people in the land set a particular value on this man' (Kalm, 111). The fourth duke of Bedford [to whom this volume is dedicated] employed him on a regular basis to visit Woburn and inspect gardens and hothouses and to prune the trees. These included many American conifers, and Miller approved introductions of alternative timber owing to the great quantity of oak needed by the Royal Navy. He also catalogued numerous American plants grown by the young Lord Petre at Thorndon, Essex. His advice was sought by the dukes of Richmond at Goodwood, where his suggestions for a flower border remain. The Society of Arts consulted Miller on agricultural matters, from winter feed for domestic animals in England to grapes suitable for the climate of South Carolina. On the latter Miller often consulted growers in both France and Italy, and he was a member of the Botanic Academy of Florence; from both countries he received seeds" (DNB). Like his father before him Ehret trained as a gardener, initially working on estates of German nobility, and painting flowers only occasionally, another skill taught him by his father, who was a good draughtsman. Ehret’s "first major sale of flower paintings came through Dr Christoph Joseph Trew, eminent physician and botanist of Nuremberg, who recognized his exceptional talent and became both patron and lifelong friend. Ehret sent him large batches of watercolours on the fine-quality paper Trew provided. In 1733 Trew taught Ehret the botanical importance of floral sexual organs and advised that he should show them in detail in his paintings. Many Ehret watercolours were engraved in Trew's works, such as ‘Hortus Nitidissimus’ (1750–86) and ‘Plantae selecta’e (1750–73), in part two of which (1751) Trew named the genus Ehretia after him. "During 1734 Ehret travelled in Switzerland and France, [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
