        History of a Savage Girl

1760 - [LE BLANC, Marie-Angelique Memmie] [HECQUET, Marie-Catherine Homassel]. The History of a Savage Girl, Caught Wild in the Woods of Champagne. London: Sold by R. Davidson, circa 1760. Small octavo (4 by 7 inches), contemporary full brown sheep rebacked, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, black morocco spine label. $3800.Scarce London edition, likely the first edition in English of the life of "a savage girl," Marie-Angélique Memmie Leblanc, reportedly published barely a decade after the French first edition, a fascinating contemporary account of her mysterious appearance in the forests of France in 1731, a work that "marks out a new direction in the history of the feral child. In part, this is due to the particular nature of her case". a mirror-image of Robinson Crusoe a savage shipwrecked in the midst of civilization."Legends of wild children fascinated Europe during the 18th century. One of the most famous was the mysterious story of a young girl, later named Marie-Angélique Memmie Leblanc, found roaming the forests of France in the early 1730s. This very scarce contemporary account of her life, anonymously published in London circa 1760, is very possibly the first edition in English of the life of Leblanc, who came to embody the unresolved origin of the human race. The fascination with her "place of origin and hence with her racial identity marks out a new direction in the history of the feral child. In part, this is due to the particular nature of her case and the fact that she was effectively a castaway in populous France, a mirror-image of Robinson Crusoe, a savage shipwrecked in the midst of civilization". [Like] Shakespeare's Miranda, Leblanc comes upon a Europe that appears to her as a brave new world." Her importance was heightened by the publication of Rousseau's Discourse on the Origins of Inequality (1755): "Leblanc appeared in France just at that moment in which Rousseau revolutionized our understanding of the 'savage'" (Newton, Savage Girls and Wild Boys, 114-15). After centuries of speculation, in which Leblanc was variously believed to be from Scandinavia, the Arctic, the Caribbean or the American West, or was seen as a representative of the missing link, "the American scholar Julia Douthwaite and the French surgeon Serge Aroles unearthed hundreds of documents on Marie-Angelique" that confirmed certain key aspects her life (Stanley, Medical Marvels , 26). "Research suggests that she may have been born a Sioux from the Wisconsin region, bought by a French woman, and transported with her to Labrador then France. In September 1731 the girl was sighted in an orchard near the village of Songi". The villagers set a bulldog on her, which she killed with one blow before scaling the tree and swinging, branch to branch, back into the woods. The village nobleman, Monsieur d'Epinay, ordered that she be caught". the girl (who appeared to be anywhere from 10 to 18 years old, depending on sources) amazed her captors by skinning and eating a rabbit uncooked and devouring a chicken in the same way. After several washings, her skin became white. Her huge thumbs and long, tough fingernails were a source of astonishment, as were her sharp, piercing cries". To avoid further escapades, d'Epinay". placed the wild girl in the municipal Hopital St.-Maur in October 1731". Called the 'shepherd's beast' on the d'Epinay estate, she was henceforth named Marie-Angélique Memmie Leblanc". her once-robust health, weakened by the diet of cooked food and the sedentary lifestyle at the Hopital (and later at convents in Chalons and Paris) was permanently damaged". Once she became fluent enough to answer questions, her interrogators were able to piece together part of her past. She apparently had been seen roaming the Champenois countryside in the company of another girl". After a dispute over a trinket (some claim it was a rosary), Marie-Angélique wounded her companion with her club. She ran off to fend for herself when she was discove [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Stauffer Richard, in École pratique des Hautes études.

Finely engraved frontis. port. of the collector (with an earlier state bound-in, see below) & engraved arms on title. 2 p.l., iv, 151 pp.; 2 p.l., xliv pp. Two parts in one vol. 8vo, 19th-cent. red morocco-backed marbled boards, spine gilt, outer & lower edges uncut. Paris: Prault fils aîné, 1760. A marvelous association copy of this important catalogue of the notable book and art collections formed by the Comte de Vence (1703-60), one of the richest collections of the period. This special copy belonged to the painter Jean Baptiste Descamps (1714-91), who was also the Comte de Vence's art advisor, with Descamps's signature on the title. It is printed on superior paper and contains two states of the engraved portrait of the Comte by Watelet after Cochin, the first issue before "armes" and the other "aux armes." The first part of the catalogue describes the books (1771 lots). Of special interest to the Comte was Provence: there are 225 titles covering its geography, history, government, law, and literature, as well as genealogies of illustrious local families. His library has been recently described as one of the most important in France at that time (see François Moureau, La Plume et le Plomb: Espaces de l'Imprimé et du Manuscrit au Siècle des Lumières, 2006). The Comte de Vence's collection of paintings, drawings and prints was considered to be among the foremost of his day, selected with the assistance of Descamps, the author of the influential La Vie des Peintres flamands, allemands et hollandaise (1753-1763), for which see especially Vol. II, p. 165 ("Le Cabinet de M. Le Comte de Vence"). It should be noted that the Comte de Vence was the dedicatee of Descamps's book, reflecting their close relationship. The sale of art (247 lots) included major masterpieces by French and non-French artists (among the latter are Maes, Steenwyck the Elder, Breughel the Elder, and Rembrandt). This section of the catalogue has been priced in a contemporary hand (and with the occasional buyer's name in a later hand). Fine copy. I have not had this rare catalogue before. With the signature of Louis Clement de Ris (1820-82), purchased by him in 1864. He was a great art collector and served as a Conservateur at the Louvre and subsequently at Versailles. ? Lugt 1121. Decamps: Benezit, Vol. 4., p. 762.

Itstates that the book has been entered at Stationer's Hall and therefore, whoever prints a pirated editionshall be prosecuted along with the nine persons already caught. It states that the true editions are signed by Edmond Hoyle and Thomas Osborne. They also note that to reduce incentive to buy pirated editions, they have reduced the price which is stated to the title page as'three shillings, neatly bound'. This copy has been signed by both Hoyle, the author and Osborne, thepublisher. No date to the title page of this volume, dated from Copac. This book is a collection of rules and playof card games. The fifteenth and sixteenth editions were published after his death and had his autograph reproduced by a woodblock. The second title page follows the contents and is thefull title of 'A ShortTreatise. . 'Condition: In original full calf binding.         Did you ever see such Damned Stuff? Or, So-Much-The Better. A Story Without Head or Tail, Wit or Humor.

London: Prnted for C. G. Seyffert n Pall-mall 1760 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small 8vo, pp. [viii], 168, contemporary calf, recently rebacked, raised bands between gilt rules, red leather label; lack half-title and last leaf of Contents, both of which are supplied in photocopy, pp. 1 -2 repaired, first three leaves of text dampstained, but clean after that. Mentions or discussions of this work appear in scholarly books on eighteenth-century erotica, e. .g, Karen Harvey: Sex and Gender in the Eighteenth Century (2004), but it is really a fairy story with occasional snatches of possible flagellation or other such popular activities for the 18th century gallant. It was mentioned or reviewed in at least three periodicals, The Monthly Review for 1760 (which suggested the original was in French). The Critical Review confirmed the French origin: "This is a wretched translation of a silly attempt to humour in the French, with scarce any other addition than that of the title-page." Sir Walter Scott had a copy in his library at Abbotsford. ESTC T77689 locates copies in BL (2), NLS (Advocates); McMaster, Wisconsin-Madison, UCLA, and Penn. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In basso a sinistra, in lastra, ma fuori dall'inciso, "Domenico Maiotto Pinx."; in basso a destra, in lastra, fuori dall'inciso "Ant. Capellan Sculp. I. Wagner recognovit et vend. Ven.

Figures of the most Beautiful, Useful, and Uncommon Plants described in The Gardeners' Dictionary.

sold by John Rivington, A. Millar, et al. 1760 - Figures of the most Beautiful, Useful, and Uncommon Plants described in The Gardeners' Dictionary. MILLER, PHILIP (1691-1771). Published in London: printed for the Author, and sold by John Rivington, A. Millar, et al., 1760; Vi, 100,(1) 101-200, (2). 21,500.00. First edition, 2 volumes, folio (16 1/4 x 11 inches) in original full speckled calf with new spines and renewed endpapers, complete with 300 full-page engravings (2 folded), all gloriously hand-colored, and any one of which would be suitable for framing if you are a monster of that sort, or fit for quiet admiration, if you are a human being of that other sort. The plates were engraved from specimens in the Chelsea Physic Garden or from drawings sent in by Miller's correspondents including, among others, Nuerenberg artists G. D. Ehret and J.S. Miller as well as John Bartram, the Pennsylvania naturalist and Dr. William Houston, who had traveled quite extensively in the Americas and West Indies. This is outstanding book on gardening in an early international framework. The plates are bright and beautifully colored, with some occasional offsetting (my pix have some shadowing which was due to the lighting in the room); title page to volume 1 mounted with a vertical crease mark; truly an exquisite addition to a gardening library, or to any library whatsoever, for that matter. A high point in botany. Nissen BBI 1378; Stafleu-C. 6059; Hunt 566; Henrey 1097; Great Flower Books 68.         The Perpetual Calculator: or, time's universal standard. In three parts. To which is annexed, an appendix, containing several useful articles relative to those important sciences. A plain and easy introduction to chronology.... An account of the solar system.... pneumatics and hydrostatics...

8vo in fours, [v]iii, 150[2]pp including list of subscribers, various tables, text figures, folding table after page [142].A Quaker by birth and persuasion, Rowland Wetherald (1727-1791) ran a school at Great Salkeld, near Penrith, where 'boarding might be had on easy terms'. This, his sole published work- a general mathematical, astronomical and scientific vade-mecum, was supported by the subscription of 171 copies, the large majority going to Cumbrian households. However two significant buyers were the Newcastle booksellers Thomas Slack (12 copies) and William Charnley (6 copies). Sykes' 'Local Records' notes that Wetherald 'settled at Sunderland a year or two after publication of the above very curious work' and this is confirmed by Hunt who states he became that town's first printer. Hunt cites the 1771 work 'The world to come' by G.L.; this George Larkin piece is found in ESTC together with a 1780? 'Choice collection of poems in Cumberland dialect....'- no further Wetherald printed items have been located.
