The Hague ('s-Gravenhage), Jacob & Isaac Scheltus, 1758 (1760). - 4to. 22 pp., final blank. With woodcut device on title page and one initial. Red modern cloth with giltstamped spine title. First edition of the peace treaty between the Netherlands and Algiers on 23 November 1757 (or 12 Rabi' al-awwal of the year 1171, the Prophet's birthday), which ended a war that had lasted since 1755. After the War of Spanish Succession had left the Dutch navy neglected and their merchant fleet large and vulnerable, the corsairs of the Barbary states had begun a series of attacks on Dutch ships. Already the only major naval power to pay tribute to Algiers (under a 1679 treaty), the Netherlands increased their payments to bring about by diplomacy the peace they were unable to enforce by military means. While Algiers had agreed to the peace in 1726 (and the Dutch made new treaties with Tunis and Tripoli), relationships remained tense. The Netherlands were required to send large annual amounts of gunpowder, arms, and naval stores, and "occasionally, if the demands of the Barbary corsairs became too excessive, the Dutch would fight back. They were at war with Algiers from 1755 to 1757 and 1792 to 1793, and with Tripoli from 1789 to 1791. However, in the end peace would once more be concluded. Payment of tribute was always cheaper than maintaining a naval squadron in the Mediterranean for years on end" (Jamieson, Lords of the Sea: A History of the Barbary Corsairs [2012], p. 179). - The present copy is a new issue with an added final leaf (and blank leaf) containing three additional articles appended in 1760.         History of a Savage Girl

1760. First Edition . [LE BLANC, Marie-Angelique Memmie] [HECQUET, Marie-Catherine Homassel]. The History of a Savage Girl, Caught Wild in the Woods of Champagne. London: Sold by R. Davidson, circa 1760. Small octavo (4 by 7 inches), contemporary full brown sheep rebacked, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, black morocco spine label. $3800.Scarce London edition, likely the first edition in English of the life of ""a savage girl,"" Marie-Angélique Memmie Leblanc, reportedly published barely a decade after the French first edition, a fascinating contemporary account of her mysterious appearance in the forests of France in 1731, a work that ""marks out a new direction in the history of the feral child. In part, this is due to the particular nature of her caseÂ… a mirror-image of Robinson Crusoe a savage shipwrecked in the midst of civilization.""Legends of wild children fascinated Europe during the 18th century. One of the most famous was the mysterious story of a young girl, later named Marie-Angélique Memmie Leblanc, found roaming the forests of France in the early 1730s. This very scarce contemporary account of her life, anonymously published in London circa 1760, is very possibly the first edition in English of the life of Leblanc, who came to embody the unresolved origin of the human race. The fascination with her “place of origin and hence with her racial identity marks out a new direction in the history of the feral child. In part, this is due to the particular nature of her case and the fact that she was effectively a castaway in populous France, a mirror-image of Robinson Crusoe, a savage shipwrecked in the midst of civilizationÂ… [Like] Shakespeare's Miranda, Leblanc comes upon a Europe that appears to her as a brave new world.” Her importance was heightened by the publication of RousseauÂ’s Discourse on the Origins of Inequality (1755): ""Leblanc appeared in France just at that moment in which Rousseau revolutionized our understanding of the 'savage'"" (Newton, Savage Girls and Wild Boys, 114-15). After centuries of speculation, in which Leblanc was variously believed to be from Scandinavia, the Arctic, the Caribbean or the American West, or was seen as a representative of the missing link, ""the American scholar Julia Douthwaite and the French surgeon Serge Aroles unearthed hundreds of documents on Marie-Angelique"" that confirmed certain key aspects her life (Stanley, Medical Marvels , 26). ""Research suggests that she may have been born a Sioux from the Wisconsin region, bought by a French woman, and transported with her to Labrador then France. In September 1731 the girl was sighted in an orchard near the village of SongiÂ… The villagers set a bulldog on her, which she killed with one blow before scaling the tree and swinging, branch to branch, back into the woods. The village nobleman, Monsieur d'Epinay, ordered that she be caughtÂ… the girl (who appeared to be anywhere from 10 to 18 years old, depending on sources) amazed her captors by skinning and eating a rabbit uncooked and devouring a chicken in the same way. After several washings, her skin became white. Her huge thumbs and long, tough fingernails were a source of astonishment, as were her sharp, piercing criesÂ… To avoid further escapades, d'EpinayÂ… placed the wild girl in the municipal Hopital St.-Maur in October 1731Â… Called the 'shepherd's beast' on the d'Epinay estate, she was henceforth named Marie-Angélique Memmie LeblancÂ… her once-robust health, weakened by the diet of cooked food and the sedentary lifestyle at the Hopital (and later at convents in Chalons and Paris) was permanently damagedÂ…. Once she became fluent enough to answer questions, her interrogators were able to piece together part of her past. She apparently had been seen roaming the Champenois countryside in the company of another girlÂ… After a dispute over a trinket (some claim it was a rosary), Marie-Angélique wounded her companion with her club. She ran off to fend for herself when she was discovered in the apple orchard near Songi. Thanks to articles in the Mercure de FranceÂ… word of this prodigy quickly spread to the capital and beyond—to England, Scotland, even SwedenÂ… The powerful duc d'Orleans took Marie-Angélique permanently under his protection in 1744Â… She then moved to the capital and began preparations for taking the veilÂ… Mystery continued to shroud Leblanc's legacy into the next century and continues still today” (Douthwaite, 29-33).Anonymously issued in France in 1755 as L'Histoire d'une jeune fille sauvage: authorship attributed to French writer Marie-Catherine Homassel Hecquet or French scientist Charles-Marie de la Condamine. Library of Congress contains a copy of this 116-page edition published in London by R. Davidson: assigning it a date of ""about 1755"" (LOC IV:152). ESTC lists two London editions, each with no publication date, each assigned a possible publication date of 1760. The imprint (London: sold by R. Dursley, T. Davison, T. Manson, C. Bland, and P. Jones) of the 155-page London edition is believed “probably false. Most of these names appear with varying initials in other false imprints"" (ESTC T12460). This preferred 116-page London edition contains the imprint, “London: sold by R. Davidson"": with no bibliographic caution on the imprint's reliability (ESTC N51560). ESTC, LOC, OCLC list no edition in English with a publication date, approximate or otherwise, earlier than this editionÂ’s suggested publication dates of 1755, 1760. Title page with: ""Newly Translated from the French of Madam H——T."" ESTC N51560. LOC IV:152. Bookseller ticket.Text fresh, only light embrowning to preliminaries, mild edge-wear to boards. An extremely good copy, scarce in contemporary boards.

Augsburg: J. E. Ridinger and 1761 1760 - First (and only) edition of both works. 4to (29 x 22.5 cm). Texts in German and French. First work: engraved title, 36 pp., 46 engraved plates; Second work: 16 engraved plates numbered 1-15 with unnumbered plan of a joust, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, red sprinkled edges, an excellent example. Ridinger was a German painter and engraver who studied at Ulm before establishing himself in Augsburg where he soon made a great reputation for animal paintings. He became the official painter for several great nobles addicted to the hunt. As here he represented animals accurately and naturally in the midst of beautiful landscapes, his execution was remarkable. But it for his depiction of horses that he is rightly most renowned. The first suite of plates depict the exercises for riders in the riding school (plates 1-43) as well as on the battlefield (44-46). The riding school plates show the horse being introduced, then trotting, volting, galloping, the courbette, croupade, etc., through to the capriole. The battlefield plates show the horse being accustomed to the waving of flags, drumming, and shooting. The second suite depicts the exercises for participating in tournaments and jousts. This copy includes the unnumbered plate with the plan of the riding school which Dejager calls "very rare" noting that Thienermann found it very difficult to find a plate to list in his bibliography of Ridinger plates. Dejager 247 & 248; Nissen 3415; Thienemann 646–692 and 693–707. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bel exemplaire.

Haarlem, C.H. Bohn, 1760. 8vo. With frontispiece folding engraved plate of a hyacinth. 19th-century boards.

Cat. Lindley Libr., p. 231; Krelage, p. 17 etc.; cf. BMC NH, p. 956. First edition of a treatise on the cultivation of bulb flowers, signed by the author. The Dutch export of bulbs began to develop in the 17th century. Foreigners held the view that only the Dutch climate and soil were suitable for the cultivation of bulbs and that only Dutch florists possessed the necessary knowledge for this craft. European courts, with nobility and gentility following suit, bought their bulbs directly from Holland, with Haarlem as centre for this trade. Nicolaas van Kampen was among the circa 10 Haarlem florists who monopolized this lucrative business. He treats the hyacinth, the most popular bulb in the 18th century and a favourite of an important trendsetter like Madame de Pompadour, the tulip, the Persian buttercup and the anemone as well as other flowers.Curiously, our copy contains the author's signature on the verso of the title with the text "Les auteurs de cet ouvrage désavoüent tous les Exemplaires qui ne seront pas signés de leur propre Main." The Traité des fleurs a oignons was translated into English and German.Boards damaged; a good, untrimmed copy from the library of J.H. Krelage.

Tempo granita vitello biondo completa.

Small quarto, 99 pp. & 6 unnumbered leaves, in original marbled paper boards. A book with a strong claim to have been owned by Captain Cook. It is a rare work and the first navigation manual of the Baltic Sea. As is generally the case with such working books of navigation all editions are extremely scarce; this is the sixth edition. This book has a tantalising and plausible ownership inscription in a very old hand to the front pastedown which reads: "Henry Murck his book bought at Sea of Captn. Cook". This intriguing note is clearly meant to refer to the great explorer himself, who had spent many years sailing on colliers in the Baltic Sea before he joined the Royal Navy in 1755, and would have always had an interest in navigational guides and pilots. In the 1760s, right up until he sailed on the Endeavour, Cook was doing his superb work in mapping coastlines in Newfoundland and North America, but it is certainly very likely that he would have kept up with any work being published regarding his old stamping ground. By the same token, while Cook is not known to have had much German, the language in which this book is written, as a good navy-man of the Hannoverian era he was surrounded by German speakers whenever he sailed. The name of the owner of the book, "Murck", is certainly one to conjure with, as that name recurs in the world of contemporary shipping: a Henry Murck is, for example, listed as joining the Marine Society of the City of New York in 1795, while an L. Murck, to cite just one meaningful example, is listed as a having a 1798-registered ship out of Gothenburg (Sweden) in the Register of Shipping for 1811. The Murck family, that is, show every sign of having been established sailors in the region in the late eighteenth century, which certainly adds weight to the early provenance. Without doubt there is a firm connection between the book and the naval officer named Henry Murck who, after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, was one of the founding officers of the modern Prussian Navy in Stralsund, not least because this copy has a later stamp for a research library in Stralsund. This Henry Murck lived into the late 1840s, but it is feasible considering his family's sea-faring history, that this book had been passed down through his family. Title-page upper corner with loss, laid down, marked, old stamps including deaccession stamp; first leaf with an old repair along fore-edge not affecting text; last leaf with repair to gutter; some significant wear but withal very good.

I piatti presentano qualche abrasione, così come i labbri anteriori. Tagli rossi.

Bel exemplaire.

[6], iv, 151, [5], xliv pp. 1771 book lots, unpriced + 247 art lots, all prices and some buyer's names in contemporary MS. With two states of the portrait by Cochin, one "aux armes," the other with the name of the former owner. Bound in 19th-century French half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, full-gilt spine, lettered and dated, made marbled endpapers, top edge painted vermilion, green silk bookmark, extremities trifle rubbed, nice copy with many deckles preserved. The sale of books took place 25 June to 12 July, 1760; the art on 24 November 1760 (some sources emend this to 9-17 February, 1761). This fine copy belonged to the great painter and Villeneuve's own art curator Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1714-1791), printed on superior paper and containing two states of the Villeneuve's portrait by Watelet after Cochin. This is the two-part sale catalogue of the important collection of Claude Alexandre de Villeneuve, Comte de Vence, Lieutenant-Général des Armées du Roy, commandant à la Rochelle, & Colonel du Régiment Royal-Corse. The first component of the catalogue is the sale of the Library, the second being the sale of a selection of the most significant works of art (here with all the prices realized in contemporary MS). The auctioneer divided the books into two principal groups: A). History; B). everything else (the former outnumbers the latter by two to one). Of especial interest to Villeneuve was the study of Provence: there are 225 titles covering its geography, history, government, law, and literature, as well as genealogies of illustrious Provençois. Villeneuve's library has been recently described as one of the most important in France at that time (SOURCE: François Moureau, "La plume et le plomb: espaces de l'imprimé et du manuscrit au siècle des Lumières," 2006). Not in North, not in Taylor; not in Blogie. Friedhelm Beckmann, "Franzosische Privatbibliotheken," p. 125 (in: Archiv fur Geschichte des Buchwesens, XXXI, 1988). Villeneuve's collection of paintings, drawings and prints is justly considered to be among the foremost of his day, selected with discernment by J.-B. Descamps, the author of the influential "La Vie des peintres flamands, allemands et hollandaise" (1753-1763), for which see especially Vol. II, p. 165 ("Le Cabinet de M. Le Comte de Vence"). The sale included major masterpieces by non-French artists such as Maes, Steenwyck the Elder, Breughel the Elder, and Rembrandt. Only 5% of the lots failed to sell. We note with interest the unsold (?) lot 179, an ink drawing of Villeneuve by Charles-Nicolas Cochin -- almost certainly the same drawing used to cut the engraved portrait found at the beginning of the volume. REFERENCE: Lugt 1121. The Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana Sammelband, containing the two Villeneuve catalogues and four others (all but one priced), realized $2,640 eight years ago (Christie's New York, 23 March 2005, lot 466). This is the only other copy we've seen on the market. PROVENANCE: "Descamps 1760" (on title page) -- Louis Clement de Ris (1820-1882), purchased by him in 1864. Ris invariably employed the title "Comte" although as a child he was adopted and the title was not passed on to him. He became a great art collector and served as a Conservateur at the Louvre and subsequently at Versailles. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Giphantie.

Babylone (Paris): n.p. 1760. Octavo, with four engraved plates by Cochin after Desfriches illustrating the second work "Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge"; contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt with red label. First edition: a marvellous utopian community in Africa, prefiguring the uses of photography, television and the telephone.Tiphaigne de la Roche (1729-1774) a physician and polymath, wrote a series of works invested with the Enlightenment spirit of philosophical enthusiasm. In Giphantie (an anagram of the author's name) the protagonist is lifted semi-conscious and transported by air to an edenic garden, where a charming spirit guide shows him around their 'vaguely utopian society' (Lewis).Interestingly, the continuing importance of the book is largely due to the succession of technical devices which are taken for granted on the island, including prototype televisions and telephones. The work is particularly remembered for one intriguing passage which has been taken as an important foundation moment in the proto-history of photography. Thus, the English edition of 1761: 'You know that the rays of light, reflected from different bodies, form a picture, and paint the image reflected on all polished surfaces, for instance, on the retina of the eye, on water, and on glass. The elementary spirits have sought to fix these fleeting images... '.This work is bound together with Pierre Honoré Robbe de Beauveset's rococo poem in four verses Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge (La Haye, 1760), illustrated with four engraved plates. De Beauveset was an influential French writer known for his gentle satires and erotic works.

        Poésies de M. Haller

Aux dépens de la société. New edition retouched and enhanced. Full blond calf granita time. Back smooth decorated with flower boxes and golden jewels, coins title and volume numbers garnet and tan morocco. Cuts outlined a golden net. All marbled. Bookplate exceptional pen, library Joseph-Ignace Guillotin guards on each volume. Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotin is an heir of the Enlightenment, a member of the famous Masonic Lodge of the Nine Sisters. He makes friends with Benjamin Franklin, Lavoisier, Bailly, Buffon or Lacepede, and writers and artists such as Condorcet, Voltaire, Restif de la Bretonne and Moreau Le Jeune. In his dressing Guillotin also met his future father-Antoine-Claude Saugrain, printer and bookseller soon appointed chief librarian of the Arsenal by the Comte d'Artois. Great scholar, Guillotin is also a major player in the French Revolution from its outset. Initiator in 1788 of the Petition of six bodies, claiming the vote by poll and not least the States-General, it is also the one who led the members in the room of the Tennis Court. In April 1789, he wrote with Bailly Booklet grievances of the Third Estate of Paris which established the first version of Human Homme.La Criminal Law Reform shall submit it to the Assembly the same philanthropic concern for equality with men before the law: A single sentence regardless of the rank of the criminal; lack of consequences for his family; non-forfeiture of the convicted; and especially one type of execution "by the effect of a simple mechanism. ".The Guillotine, inspired by vintage prints and improved by Dr. Antoine Louis machinery, is an instrument that is supposed to have killed painlessly and replace execution of the regime's main modes: decapitation by ax saber or sword, hanging and roue.Or if book of poetry Haller is a precious relic of the library near the great scientists and artists of the time humanist, it also allows us to suppose Guillotin knowledge on medical issues raised by his invention.En Indeed, Albrecht von Haller is not only a poet. It is also an anatomist and physiologist renowned, best known for his research on irritability, highlighting the persistence of movements in parts of the body. "Haller wondered how the life of an animal is still possible after removal of the brain and reported number of observations relating to insects, cold-blooded quadrupeds (...) that remain for a few days able to walk and even to mate" (see Canguilhem, Formation of the concept of reflex the eighteenth and eighteenth centuries) .OR this reflection is crucial in the process of Guillotin, since mechanization is primarily intended to end the suffering caused by the executions. If from 1752, Dr. Antoine Louis participated in the dispute over the "signs of death" we have no record of interest in the issue Guillotin. The presence of a work of Haller in Guillotin allows us to assume that the doctor philanthropist was fully aware of the scientific debate on the basic question of the immediacy of death due to the removal of the head. So knowingly uttered as Guillotin before the Assembly this sentence (the unfortunate statement earned him a bad reputation), "With my machine, I'll blow your head with a wink, and you do not suffer. Mechanical falls like lightning, head flies, blood gushes, man is no more. " --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Histoire Naturelle, Volcans. Vue Généralle du Vesuve en 1757

Spectacular view of the Vesuve during the eruption of 1575, engraved by J. F. Bernard on a drawing by de la Rue. The view was published into famous Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers. The Encyclopédie was published under the direction of Diderot and d'Alembert, with 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates between 1751 and 1772. Containing 74,000 articles written by more than 130 contributors, the Encyclopédie was a massive reference work for the arts and sciences, as well as a machine de guerre which served to propagate the ideas of the French Enlightenment. The impact of the Encyclopédie was enormous. Through its attempt to classify learning and to open all domains of human activity to its readers, the Encyclopédie gave expression to many of the most important intellectual and social developments of its time. Copperplate, finely hand coloured, in very good condition. Parigi Paris 445 355

PARAGUAY / NORTHERN ARGENTINA / URUGUAY / SOUTHERNMOST BRAZIL: PARAQUARIAE PROVINCIAE SOC. JESU CUM ADIACENTIB. NOVISSIMA DESCRIPTIO: POST ITERATA PEREGRINATIONES & PLURES OBSERVATIONES PATRUM MISSIONARIORUM EIUSDEM SOC. TUM HUIUS PROVINCIÆ.

Venice 1760 - Copper engraving with original outline colour (Very Good, fine original outline colour, a few light small stains, old closed tear in lower corner extending to neatline), 78 x 59 cm (31 x 23 inches). The rare and exquisitely engraved Venice edition of the finest and most important 18th century map of Paraguay, Northern Argentina, and the Río de la Plata Basin, the earliest obtainable edition of Antonio Machoni’s work, revised and enlarged from Juan Francisco d’Ávila’s map. This is a lovely example of the rare Venice edition, printed in 1760, of the earliest obtainable version of Antonio Marchoni’s map of the Río de la Plata-Paraguay Basin, first issued by Giovanni Petroschi in 1732, which was, in turn, an improvement over Juan Francisco d’Ávila’s exceedingly rare 1726 map. It is the most accurate and detailed 18th Century map of the region, issued at a critical historical juncture, just before the Jesuit Order was expelled from its vast empire of inland missions by the Spanish and Portuguese crowns. The map embraces the south-central part of South America from the Atlantic to Pacific Oceans, including most of Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile; extending from Lake Chucuito, Peru, and the source of the Paraguay River at Xareyes Lacas to the Río de la Plata estuary at Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The various Spanish and Portuguese provinces are distinguished with outlining in their own original colours; all major cities and towns, innumerable Jesuit missions, and many Native villages are marked, along with several sites of Jesuit martyrdoms. The map is one of the finest examples of the rich tradition of Jesuit New World cartography and is one of the seminal historical maps of South America. The Story behind the Machoni / D’Ávila Cartography - While the present map, in its various editions, is well known to scholars, a great deal of confusion and misinformation has been written about the origins and publication history. Fortunately, the matter can be largely cleared up here. Our story begins in the early years of the 18th Century, when the Jesuit Order controlled a vast empire of inland missions in the Paraguay region. The Orders’s superiors in Rome had the task of allocating personnel and financial resources to various parts of the region. The problem was that they had absolutely no reliable maps of the area and in many cases had not even a basic conception of the vast distances involved in travelling between missions. In 1710, the Superior General of the Order asked the head of the Paraguay missions, the Father Provincial, to commission an accurate general map of the greater Paraguay region. The task of making the map fell to Father Juan Francisco d’Ávila (1663 - 1733), a native of Buenos Aires who already had over a generation of experience travelling through the region. After further decade of reconnaissance, armed with information supplied by his brothers in various missions, D’Ávila completed his manuscript map in 1722. The manuscript was dispatched to Rome, where, in 1726, it was published under the direction of the Procurator General of the Jesuit Order, Jerónimo de Herrán. This map is astoundingly rare and is considered virtually unobtainable. Enter Father Antonio Machoni (1671 - 1753), a Jesuit originally from Sardinia, who had travelled to Paraguay in 1698 to join the missions. In 1708, he participated in the expedition to the Chaco region led by Esteban de Urizar, the governor of Tucumán. In 1711, he fouded the mission of San Esteban de Miraflores, before becoming a professor and later rector of the Maximum School in Córdoba, Argentina. In 1728, Machoni was summoned to Rome to assume the senior admisntirative role of Procurator General of the Order’s Paraguay missions. There he was given access to D’Avila’s map. As Machoni had gained a vast wealth of geographical intellignece on the greater Paraguay region, many of it derived from his own firsthand reconaissance, he elected to draft a manuscr
