Prezzo realizzato 36.700 £. Douladoure; (back of half-title: Paris, Madame Huzard), 1824. 12mo. Slightly later dark green half sheepskin.

Bradley IV, p. 493; WorldCat (3 copies?). Very rare first edition of a treatise on the beech tree ( Fagus sylvatica ) by the French administrator and forester Étienne-François Dralet (1760-1844). It deals in particular with the beech in France, starting with its physical appearance (leaves, flowers, wood, etc.) and habitat. The second part deals mainly with the economic value of the tree, its wood and its beechnuts. It also includes an introduction to the management of a beech forest, with a chapter on beech forests in the north of France and another on forests in the south or up in the mountains. In 1801 Dralet was appointed as "curator" of the waters and forests of Toulouse, where he tried to restore to the state the forests that had fallen into private hands during the Revolution.First and last few pages browned and a water stain in the lower outer corner of the last 6 pages. Otherwise in very good condition.

Januar 1764 in Lindau gestorben. Weidlich, Zuverlässige Nachrichten von denen jetzt lebenden Rechtsgelehrten. Halle, Bd.         A finely illustrated album of case histories, with 33 careful full-page drawings, heightened in color, and text in manuscript. 26 folding leaves. 8vo (226 x 170 mm.), orig. wrappers (occasional light staining)

N.p.: ca. 1760. The father of Genteki Kagawa, Genetsu (or Shigen) Kagawa (1699-1777), is famous for originating the practice of gynecology and obstetrics in Japan. His "San-ron was destined to be the standard authority on obstetrics in Japan for at least a hundred years. That classic work was followed by the San-ron yoku written in 1775 by Genteki (or Shikei) Kagawa (1739-1779), the adopted son of Genetsu, as a 'supplement' to the San-ron and to correct the errors in the published work of the elder Kagawa, resulting in a considerable improvement in obstetrical methods."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part II, pp. 493-94. Genteki Kagawa is famous for using many unconventional devices for facilitating a successful delivery and was the first obstetrician in Japan to understand that the head of the foetus should be down during delivery. In the 18th century, due to the considerable poverty in Japan, many babies were aborted. Makers and polishers of mirrors also filled the profession of abortionists as they had access to mercury which could be used to terminate foetuses. When the procedure went wrong, women were brought to Kagawa who noticed that the unborn children's heads were almost always at the bottom of the womb. This album - an illustrated practical manual - discusses many case histories of complications, special observations, and remarkable occurrences observed by Kagawa during pregnancy and birth; 33 are finely drawn and colored. It was issued by Kagawa as a sort of examination for his disciples, requiring them to demonstrate advanced knowledge of obstetrics before they were granted a license or certificate to practice; it was kept in manuscript as secret or proprietary information. Kagawa has recommended a number of drugs and provided recipes for their manufacture for the health of the expectant mother and to induce childbirth. A very nice copy. Some worming, occasionally touching image or text, carefully repaired.

Histoire Naturelle, Volcans.

Spectacular view of the Vesuve during the eruption of 1575, engraved by J. F. Bernard on a drawing by de la Rue. The view was published into famous Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers. The Encyclopédie was published under the direction of Diderot and d'Alembert, with 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates between 1751 and 1772. Containing 74,000 articles written by more than 130 contributors, the Encyclopédie was a massive reference work for the arts and sciences, as well as a machine de guerre which served to propagate the ideas of the French Enlightenment. The impact of the Encyclopédie was enormous. Through its attempt to classify learning and to open all domains of human activity to its readers, the Encyclopédie gave expression to many of the most important intellectual and social developments of its time. Copperplate, finely hand coloured, in very good condition. Dimensioni 445 355mm

Two parts in one. Amsterdam: J.H. Schneider, 1760. Two parts in one, 12mo., [iv], iv, [ii], 205, [15]; 51, [1, bl.]pp., title page printed in red and black, a title page engraved vignette, and 24 folding engraved maps and plates, all but one hand-colored (as required). Contemporary cat's paw calf, red edges. Front hinge repaired with tape, lacking front free endpaper, some slight offsetting and browning within, a few slight tears and paper flaws, binding neatly restored along joints and at ends; very good copy. First edition of this truly rare children's introduction to geography and astronomy, many times reprinted and pirated. The maps are "blind" maps, with the outlines of continents, countries etc. only so children learn to find them by reading the text. Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America are covered, but not Australia or the Poles. The second part introduces children to globes and their usage, and principles of cosmography and astronomy. The world map is by Christian Sepp and had first appeared in a 1758 atlas, the plates for which must have been sold to Schneider for this book. OCLC 54151363 cites copies at Yale, Detroit and Amsterdam and there appear to be a further eight copies, none in the US.

Marifetname [The Book of Knowledge and Skills].

[Ottoman Empire, ca 1760]. - Folio (209 x 318 mm). 459, (2), 14 (but: 13) ff. of index, numerous errors in Arabic pagination, but complete according to catchwords, numbered throughout by a later owner in pencil from left to right, 1-474 ff. Ottoman Turkish on thin, polished, cream-coloured laid paper. Text is in fine naskh script with black and red ink within a red double-lined border, 31 lines of text within a written area of 232 x 112 mm. Occasional red underlining, sections usually demarcated by a single word of red text on a line with a red border on either side. 11 full-page colour illustrations of scientific diagrams, 8 full-page coloured tables and 5 coloured half-page illustrations, as well as a round, black and red ink diagram on leaf 448v. Contemporary full calf, expertly rebacked with six compartments of raised bands and gilt motifs, gilt red title label, all edges speckled red. A fine 18th century manuscript copy of the famous scholarly encyclopedia, not printed until 1835 (in Bulaq). The "Marifetname", or "Book of Gnosis" is a compilation of astronomical, astrological, mathematical, anatomical, psychological, philosophical as well as mystical religious texts. It is famous for containing the first treatment of post-Copernican astronomy by a Muslim scholar. - Ibrahim Haqqi Erzurumi (1703-80) is considered an outstanding figure of 18th century Ottoman Turkey. Based on an immense knowledge of the Sufi branch of Islam as well as his studies in Western science, he devoted himself to the domains of both religion and science, considering both a means of approaching God. - Occasional smudging of ink; minor offsetting on pages facing illustrations, leaves 7-11 with minor waterstains in the upper corner margins, leaves 12-18 expertly reinforced in the upper margin, with rather severe loss to text in upper half of leaves 14v and 15. Text appears to be lost on 378r (faint traces of text still remain). Leaves 343v-350v have dark pink stain in centre of text toward gutter (no loss), likewise on 443v-463v. Leaves 448-454 have had their margins reinforced. Leaves numbered 449 and 450 must be switched, as well as 453 and 454. Altogether a very appealing copy with the numerous illustrations showing fine detail. Cf. Zenker I, 1709. F. Gülen, "Key Concepts in the Practice of Sufism," p. 106, n. 69. Z.
