Woodcut vignette on title. 167 (i.e. 157), [15] pp. 8vo, fine red morocco of about 1760, triple gilt fillets round sides, tiny gilt stars at each corner, flat spine richly gilt "á la grotesque," green morocco lettering piece on spine, blue paper endpapers, a.e.g. Paris: F. Leonard, 1666. First edition of the catalogue of the first of two print collections formed by Marolles (1600-81), abbot of Villeloin and man of letters. He began acquiring prints in 1626 and by 1644, his collecting activities governed his life. At that time there was little competition, and Marolles bought several important collections en bloc, including those of Delorme, Maugis, Kerver, Petau, La Reynie, and others. His first collection amounted to 123,400 separate prints by more than 6000 print makers, mounted in 400 large volumes and 141 smaller ones. It was acquired in the name of the King by Colbert in 1667 for 28,000 livres. This was the largest and finest collection ever formed up to that time and is today the foundation of the Bibliothèque Nationale's Department of Prints. Marolles assembled "the first print collection on the grand scale…[and]…was among the first of the private collectors in history to sacrifice his life and fortune to his passion. He may truly be called the 'Father of Print Collecting'…by the very scope of his activity, and his interest in separating his many thousands of pieces of paper into artist schools, Marolles lifted the printed picture from a by-path of typography to being one of the major prizes of the born collector."-Taylor, The Taste of Angels: A History of Art Collecting. Fine copy, handsomely bound. Stamp on title of the Abbey of St. Germain de Près. Cipher "HDD" on title (Lugt 739). This is the stamp of Pierre Defer (1798-1870), expert to King Louis Philippe, and his nephew Henri Dumesnil (1823-98), who inherited Defer's collection. Defer formed an important private collection of prints and drawings in the first half of the 19th century. He devoted much of his life to the study of prints and drawings and is best remembered for his unfinished Catalogue général des Ventes Publiques de Tableaux et d'estampes. ❧ Besterman, Old Art Books, pp. 71-72. Editio quarta.

in aedibus academicis excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, Glasguae [Glasgow] 1760 - 4to, pp. [ii], xii, 307, [1]. Contemporary French red morocco, boards bordered with a triple gilt rule, spine divided by gilt rolls, orange morocco label, other compartments with central acorn tools and corner sprays all gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Corners a little worn (one more chipped) and several touched up with red dye, joints a touch rubbed and head of spine just slightly worn. Armorial bookplate with slogan 'Pro Republica' (Nicholson of Balrath, County Meath) above booklabel with the initials 'WRHJ' (i.e. Wynne Rice Hugh Jeudwine). The luxurious 'large-paper' quarto imposition - using the same setting of text as the octavo, and therefore capaciously-margined - of the fourth Foulis edition of Horace, following on from the 1744 'Immaculate' edition and reprints of 1750 and 1756 (the latter a medal-winning printing). The process of rearranging the frames has not gone entirely smoothly, with pages 20 (C2v) and 24 (C4v) swapped. This copy appears to have bounced around the British Isles and nearby points in Europe somewhat, having been bound in France not long after its printing in Scotland, and later belonging to collections in Ireland and England.         The Tears of Music. A Poem, to the Memory of Mr. Handel. With an Ode to the River Eden .

Printed for R. Griffiths ., London 1760 - First edition: a scarce, early work by Langhorne (1735-1779), written from Hackthorn, Lincolnshire (where he served as a tutor) and dedicated to the Honourable Mrs Lane, 'a great Lover and Patroness of Music'.'The Tears of Music may be considered as the genuine and animated wailings of Poetry, who deplores her Sister's loss, in Handel, very melodiously through the quill of a favourite Devoté to these tuneful Powers. Indeed, Mr. Langhorne appears, from these small specimens, to possess an exact ear, and a delicate taste for these fine arts . We are regaled with as delightful a concert as can be without actual instruments and voices. The pauses and cadences' (Monthly Review). The 'Ode to the River Eden' which accompanies the main poem Langhorne describes as on a subject 'merely personal'. Aubin quotes from it and describes it as 'an early example of a "youthful recollections" poem' (Topographical Poetry, p. 231). 4to (238 × 195 mm) in half-sheets, pp. 23, [1]; complete with half-title; title and final blank page rather dust-soiled; recent wrappers. The idea of irritability indicates a property that permits the different parts of the living body to react independently from the conscious mind, the central nervous system, and the whole of the organism. Vital forces, notably the capacity to respond to stimulation, are, so to speak, decentered, even to the point that they become the characteristic property of the structural element of the body, the elementary fiber.

Prezzo realizzato 36.700 £.       Bradley IV, p. 493; WorldCat (3 copies?). Very rare first edition of a treatise on the beech tree ( Fagus sylvatica ) by the French administrator and forester Étienne-François Dralet (1760-1844). It deals in particular with the beech in France, starting with its physical appearance (leaves, flowers, wood, etc.) and habitat. The second part deals mainly with the economic value of the tree, its wood and its beechnuts. It also includes an introduction to the management of a beech forest, with a chapter on beech forests in the north of France and another on forests in the south or up in the mountains. In 1801 Dralet was appointed as "curator" of the waters and forests of Toulouse, where he tried to restore to the state the forests that had fallen into private hands during the Revolution.First and last few pages browned and a water stain in the lower outer corner of the last 6 pages. Otherwise in very good condition.

A finely illustrated album of case histories, with 33 careful full-page drawings, heightened in color, and text in manuscript. 26 folding leaves. 8vo (226 x 170 mm.), orig. wrappers (occasional light staining)

      - N.p.: ca. 1760. The father of Genteki Kagawa, Genetsu (or Shigen) Kagawa (1699-1777), is famous for originating the practice of gynecology and obstetrics in Japan. His "San-ron was destined to be the standard authority on obstetrics in Japan for at least a hundred years. That classic work was followed by the San-ron yoku written in 1775 by Genteki (or Shikei) Kagawa (1739-1779), the adopted son of Genetsu, as a 'supplement' to the San-ron and to correct the errors in the published work of the elder Kagawa, resulting in a considerable improvement in obstetrical methods."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part II, pp. 493-94. Genteki Kagawa is famous for using many unconventional devices for facilitating a successful delivery and was the first obstetrician in Japan to understand that the head of the foetus should be down during delivery. In the 18th century, due to the considerable poverty in Japan, many babies were aborted. Makers and polishers of mirrors also filled the profession of abortionists as they had access to mercury which could be used to terminate foetuses. When the procedure went wrong, women were brought to Kagawa who noticed that the unborn children's heads were almost always at the bottom of the womb. This album - an illustrated practical manual - discusses many case histories of complications, special observations, and remarkable occurrences observed by Kagawa during pregnancy and birth; 33 are finely drawn and colored. It was issued by Kagawa as a sort of examination for his disciples, requiring them to demonstrate advanced knowledge of obstetrics before they were granted a license or certificate to practice; it was kept in manuscript as secret or proprietary information. Kagawa has recommended a number of drugs and provided recipes for their manufacture for the health of the expectant mother and to induce childbirth. A very nice copy. Some worming, occasionally touching image or text, carefully repaired.
