Two parts in one. Amsterdam: J.H. Schneider, 1760. Two parts in one, 12mo., [iv], iv, [ii], 205, [15]; 51, [1, bl.]pp., title page printed in red and black, a title page engraved vignette, and 24 folding engraved maps and plates, all but one hand-colored (as required). Contemporary cat's paw calf, red edges. Front hinge repaired with tape, lacking front free endpaper, some slight offsetting and browning within, a few slight tears and paper flaws, binding neatly restored along joints and at ends; very good copy. First edition of this truly rare children's introduction to geography and astronomy, many times reprinted and pirated. The maps are "blind" maps, with the outlines of continents, countries etc. only so children learn to find them by reading the text. Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America are covered, but not Australia or the Poles. The second part introduces children to globes and their usage, and principles of cosmography and astronomy. The world map is by Christian Sepp and had first appeared in a 1758 atlas, the plates for which must have been sold to Schneider for this book. OCLC 54151363 cites copies at Yale, Detroit and Amsterdam and there appear to be a further eight copies, none in the US.

Marifetname [The Book of Knowledge and Skills].

[Ottoman Empire, ca 1760]. - Folio (209 x 318 mm). 459, (2), 14 (but: 13) ff. of index, numerous errors in Arabic pagination, but complete according to catchwords, numbered throughout by a later owner in pencil from left to right, 1-474 ff. Ottoman Turkish on thin, polished, cream-coloured laid paper. Text is in fine naskh script with black and red ink within a red double-lined border, 31 lines of text within a written area of 232 x 112 mm. Occasional red underlining, sections usually demarcated by a single word of red text on a line with a red border on either side. 11 full-page colour illustrations of scientific diagrams, 8 full-page coloured tables and 5 coloured half-page illustrations, as well as a round, black and red ink diagram on leaf 448v. Contemporary full calf, expertly rebacked with six compartments of raised bands and gilt motifs, gilt red title label, all edges speckled red. A fine 18th century manuscript copy of the famous scholarly encyclopedia, not printed until 1835 (in Bulaq). The "Marifetname", or "Book of Gnosis" is a compilation of astronomical, astrological, mathematical, anatomical, psychological, philosophical as well as mystical religious texts. It is famous for containing the first treatment of post-Copernican astronomy by a Muslim scholar. - Ibrahim Haqqi Erzurumi (1703-80) is considered an outstanding figure of 18th century Ottoman Turkey. Based on an immense knowledge of the Sufi branch of Islam as well as his studies in Western science, he devoted himself to the domains of both religion and science, considering both a means of approaching God. - Occasional smudging of ink; minor offsetting on pages facing illustrations, leaves 7-11 with minor waterstains in the upper corner margins, leaves 12-18 expertly reinforced in the upper margin, with rather severe loss to text in upper half of leaves 14v and 15. Text appears to be lost on 378r (faint traces of text still remain). Leaves 343v-350v have dark pink stain in centre of text toward gutter (no loss), likewise on 443v-463v. Leaves 448-454 have had their margins reinforced. Leaves numbered 449 and 450 must be switched, as well as 453 and 454. Altogether a very appealing copy with the numerous illustrations showing fine detail. Cf. Zenker I, 1709. F. Gülen, "Key Concepts in the Practice of Sufism," p. 106, n. 69.

Map of Paraguay or the provinces settled by the Jesuits around 1732, first issued in Rome by Giovanni Petroschi (1715- 1766). Includes a key for identification of locations of the settlements of Spanish, newly-converted native Americans, and the non-Christian natives. Includes scale. The map is dedicated to Francisco Retz (1673-1750), Superior General of the Society of Jesus Between 1609 and 1780, the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) established an autonomous Christian Indian state on the territory of present-day Paraguay, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina and Brazil. After unsuccessful efforts to Christianize the warlike Guaycurú Indians of northeastern Paraguay, the Jesuits concentrated on organizing the Guaraní Indians into a series of reducciones (reductions or townships), in which a kind of communal living was practiced. The system of reductions was an attempt to correct earlier abuses, in which the Paraguayan Indians were transformed into virtual slaves who were compelled to work for the Spanish settlers. Copper engraving, hand coloured, perfectly executed restorations on verso, otherwise in good condition. Dimensioni 536 680mm

A Confession of Faith Owned and Consented to by the Elders and Messengers of the Churches in the Colony in Connecticut in New-England, Assembled, by Delegation at Say Brook September 9th 1708.

New London: Timothy Green, 1760. Small 8vo, contemporary tooled sheep, [1], 118 pp. Binding very worn, and spine is chipped and torn a bit, rear joint cracked, early owner's signatures and notes on endpapers, some foxing, aged and browned throughout. This work is a second edition of a title that was originally published in 1710 by Thomas Short. A third edition was published in 1810, a hundred years after the first, which was followed by one in 1831. The Saybrook Synod, which took place in 1708, produced one of the most important religious documents of that period. It produced a 15 point statement, which included a provision for an association of churches that could exercise some control over local congregations. It also appears to have developed regional ministerial associations that could review ministerial candidates. colonialwarsct website. Evans 8733. Sabin 77391.

Etching with engravings, signed and dated at lower center. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, some expert repairs at the back, otherwise in good condition. This plate is engraved by Cochin & Jacques Philippe Le Bas, after a painting by Joseph Vernet. Vernet was commissioned by Louis XV in 1753 to paint fifteen views of the main ports of France, and given the exceptional title of "peintre des marines de sa majesté". He spent twelve years travelling around the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Channel coasts with his family and servants in tow. The country was at war with England at the time, and Louis specifically requested that the artist show off the economic activities and maritime strength of France, which Vernet did to much acclaim. The majority of the paintings are in the Musée de la Marine in Paris. Arlaud 246; IFF 312.II. Dimensioni 750 540mm [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Rotterdam panorama - naar Werner.

?ROTTERDAM??.
