A View of Coombank near Sevenoak in Kent, the Seat of the Honble. Lieutt. Genl. Campbell / Veüe de Coombank, dans la Comté de Kent. Maison de L'honble. Lieutt. Genl. Campbell [Pl. 29]

London: Printed for John Bowles & Son, at the Black Horse in Cornhill, T. Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard, Robt. Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street. J. Boydell, circa 1760. Engraving, printed on fine laid paper. Very good condition. 14 1/2 x 21 1/8 inches. 17 x 23 3/8 inches. A fine image of the verdant country estate of General Campbell, Baron Sundridge of Coombank. Born in Maidstone in 1735, William Woollett was one of the most renowned landscape engravers of his time and the first English engraver to achieve popular success in continental Europe. His artistic aptitude became apparent at an early age, and he was sent to London to train at St. Martin's Lane Academy and apprentice with the engraver and printseller John Tinney. Woollett began his career with a series of topographical views, but first truly distinguished himself as skilled engraver with the publication of his print of Richard Wilson's Destruction of the Children of Niobe. His copious plates after artists such as Stubbs, Vernet, and Claude proved so popular, that many of them were copied by engravers on the Continent. Beginning in 1766, he became an active member of the Society of Artists, where he served in a variety of positions. Although he specialized in landscapes, Woollett also engraved a number of marine and historical scenes including the print for which he is most famous, Death of General Wolfe after Benjamin West, and for which he was received the honorable title of Historical Engraver to His Majesty.         The Royal Magazine or Gentleman's Compainion Vol. III. July-Dec 1760

Hard cover with the original marbled boards. Has been rebound to replace the spine leather about 25 years ago. Much shelf wear is found on the outer cover and top, bottom and edges of the paper pages. The book starts with the July, 1760 issue and ends with the December, 1760 issue. The list of engravings are: Genius, Truth and Science. Handed colored- American Goldfinch. Music- Belinda. Fort William in Bengal. View of the bridge in Hampton Court. Music- Reconcilement. Admiral Saunders. Hand colored- Red and black Manakin. Temple at Mount Laurium *this has a wear mark through the paper on this page. Music- Polly's Charms. Hand colored- Sapphore crowned Parrakeet. Map- Jamaica. Music- Retirement. Mr. Pope's House, Twickenham. Music- Jesse. Floor plan of the Royal burial vault. Temple of Corinth. Some of these are large fold-out sheets. , Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Saunders. At 46, this bulky man with fierce baggy eyes had seen 32 years of service in the British navy. Despite his deceptively quiet personality, Saunders carried out his orders with dogged determination. His career up to this point was marked by no outstanding sea victories yet he had a reputation for being one of the best and luckiest officers in the Royal Navy. Now he was placed in overall command of a quarter of the Royal Navy. , September 12 saw a good deal of activity on the part of the Royal Navy, causing Montcalm to wonder where Wolfe was with the main part of his army. Saunders had stationed his fleet opposite the Beauport Lines, he didn't give the French a moments peace all day or night. On September 18, Admiral Saunders and Brigadier General George Townshend accepted the surrender of Quebec. Yet Saunders accomplishments did not end with the conquest of Quebec, he also provided the garrison with cannons, ammunition and provisions before he left, even to the extent of reducing his ships' stores. It may be that Quebec might well have been recaptured by the French under Francis de Gaston, Chevalier de Levis the following spring if not for the troops and supplies Saunders had left behind. Horace Wallpole once said of Saunders, "No man said less and deserves more." He died in 1775 and is buried in Westminster Abbey near the Wolfe memorial.         Escrime (Alles was zum Thema Fechten erschienen ist. 53 Abb.).

The Surgeon's Theatre in the Old Bailey, c 1760

1760. [Engraving]. [Old Bailey]. Cole, Benjamin [fl. 1700-1767], Engraver. The Surgeon's Theatre in the Old Bailey, c. 1760. 8" x 13" copperplate engraving, handsomely matted and glazed, margins trimmed closely, image mounted on board. Negligible light toning to margins, negligible faint crease to right side of image. A nice copy in a handsome frame. * This engraving depicts the front elevation of the original home of the Royal College of Surgeons. From 1752 to 1832 death sentences for murder in Great Britain stipulated that the condemned person's corpse be "dissected and anatomised" for the benefit of medical students shortly after the execution. This is why the Old Bailey had a surgeon's theatre. Hogarth's "The Reward of Cruelty," The Four Stages of Cruelty, Plate 4, is a satirical depiction of a dissection in this building.

SEMIRAMIS; A TRAGEDY. Translated from the French of M. De Voltaire

London: Printed for G. Kearsly a the Golden Lion in Ludgate Street. London: Printed for G. Kearsly, a the Golden Lion in Ludgate-Street.. 1760. drab boards.. The front paste-down bears the bookplate of Alaskan bibliographer. James Wickersham, who attached to the rear paste-down the mailing. label (with canceled stamp) of the British bookseller, McLeish &. Sons, from whom presumably he obtained this book. Lacks the. advertising leaf at rear, a very good copy. (#140101). First edition in English. "Semiramis, ninth-century queen of Assyria (present-day Iraq), was, until the early twentieth century, a figure of legend that had been well- established as of the classical period: begotten of the fish-goddess Atargatis and fed by doves until her rescue by a royal shepherd; bride of general Onnes and successor to his power and eventually to the throne of Assyria; founder of Babylon and every other monument in the region; long- lived, brave, wise and sexually potent, she was turned into a dove at her death and worshipped subsequently as a surrogate of the Assyrian fertility goddess Astarte. Modern archaeological research by Lehman-Haupt and others has largely replaced legend with history, but the legend was still alive and well in Voltaire's time. She was a female personification of all that was gaudy and glorious in pre- Christian antiquity, and she furnished good material for this tragedy (Voltaire's preference in drama), composed in 1748, a year after his conte philosophique ZADIG. Voltaire's play has probably had more continuing vitality as the foundation of the libretto of the Rossini opera, 'Semiramide' (1823), widely considered as one of the best, and last, operas in the Baroque style." - Robert Eldridge.       Regensburg, typis Weissianis, 1760. 4:o. 24 s. & 1 utvikbar handkolorerad grav. plansch. Rödbrunt pappbd med mörkt blå titeletikett (Johanna Röjgård). Gamla marmorerade snitt. Fint ex.. Nissen Die zoologische Buchillustration 3627.

Lithographie koloriert.

8Tobias Pfeifer-Helke, 2007, SIK)

Le Berger Recompensé [The Shepherd Repaid]

Engraving. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some light foxing. Creases on side and bottom of sheet where it has been folded. Trimmed within the platemark on the upper margin. Image size: 17 1/4 x 14 3/16 inches. 19 3/4 x 15 inches. A lovely pastoral print after the celebrated French Rococo artist Francois Boucher. Francois Boucher (1703-1770) was one of the most versatile and influential French artists of the eighteenth century. He not only decorated palaces and private residences, but also painted portraits, landscapes, and mythological scenes; and designed opera sets, porcelains, and tapestries. He was a prolific painter and draftsman and he excelled in cabinet-sized paintings for collectors, many of which were reproduced in print in an effort to satisfy the demands of eager connoisseurs. He began his career producing reproductive engravings of Watteau's paintings, but he quickly became one of the most fashionable artists in Paris. He was favoured by the King's mistress, Madame du Pompadour, and quickly became "premier peintre" to Louis XV. Boucher rejuvenated the 'pastoral tradition' in French art, and was instrumental in developing the Rococo style which characterized French art during Louis XV's reign. This sublime print by the Parisian engraver Robert Gaillard is an evocative example of Boucher's sumptuous style of painting. A reclining shepherd has been playing the pipes beside the path where a pretty peasant girl passes by. They share a powerful gaze, and the girl offers him a wreath of spring flowers. The image is strikingly vibrant. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes, p. 261, no.27

Augsburg: Tobias Conrad Lotter, [circa 1760]. Copper engraving, coloured by hand. Fine condition. Plate mark: 19 3/4 x 22 7/8 inches. Sheet size: 21 1/4 x 25 1/2 inches. An excellent example of the second state of this map to carry Lotter's imprint: an important map of the American northeast with an inset view of New York City This is the fifth state (with the 'Boston' reading) of a map originally issued by Matthaeus Seutter (1678- 1757) in 1730, but is also a fine example of one of the much-pirated Jansson-Visscher New England series of maps, first published by Visscher in 1651. The present Seutter/Lotter plate `is the first map in the [Jansson-Visscher] series to show ... the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania'. There are three states with Seutter's imprint, and after his death in 1757 his son-in-law, Tobias Conrad Lotter, inserted his own name and three further states were published. This is the second of those three states with the spelling of Boston corrected. To this map of the northeast is added the famous 'Restitutio View' of New York City, which celebrated the brief return to Dutch governance from late 1672 until February of 1674. This is one of the earliest views of the city. Adorning the inset view is a very elaborate tableau in which the Emperor, Charles VI, is shown attended by Hermes, god of commerce, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hera, who is standing over a chest of gold coins. Behind the divine beings, dark-skinned workers of the world carry nature's products to lay at the Emperor's feet. The Seutter / Lotter dynasty was one of the most important of all eighteenth-century German map-making firms. The business was established by Lotter's father- in-law who had trained under the renowned cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremberg. By 1731 Seutter had been appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court. On his death, Lotter continued in the same post, and with his son Mathais Albrecht Lotter produced cartographical works of a consistently high quality throughout the 18th century. Cf.

[Twickenham]: Strawberry Hill Press. 1760. First Edition. Hardcover. Contemporary calf rebacked preserving original boards and lettering piece, boards with decorative gilt border and elaborate gilt corner pieces, spine with gilt decoration, corners a little bumped/rubbed, some surface wear to boards with small loss to gilding in a few places, edges of text-block marbled, marbled endpapers, engraved vignette on title page and vignette on 'Ad Lectorum' leaf both by Grignion, contents clean and bright. This copy is in the first state of what Hazen describes as " perhaps the most distinguished piece of printing to come from the Press at Strawberry Hill" (Hazen 7, p. 49)., Horace Walpole (1717-1797) was a politician, a patron of the arts and an author. Today he probably best known as the author of the gothic novel, 'The Castle of Otranto' and for his home in Twickenham, Strawberry Hill. Here Walpole indulged his taste for the gothic, slowly transforming the house into the finest example of Georgian Gothic revival architecture in the country. The house gave its name to Walpole's private press which was founded in June 1757. While the press published many of Walpole's own works it did not publish his most famous work, 'The Castle of Otranto' and in later life Walpole would describe his 'Anecdotes of Painting in England' as "‘the only thing I ever published of any use." Hazen it seems disagrees with this sentiment as did Thomas Dibdin, who described the 'Pharsalia' as the "most perfect specimen of that press.", 4to 11" - 13" tall, [3]ff., [1]-525, [1] pp .
