The Great Britain Coasting Pilot was the result of the first systematic survey of British coastal waters. It took eight years to complete, and was used by the Royal Navy for navigating British waters for many years. The charts are notable for both their accuracy and their charm.Captain Greenvile Collins was an outstanding naval officer who became 'Hydrographer to the King' before the Coasting Pilot was published.

Edges and corners lightly worn. Very slight chipping to tail of spine. Front hinge professionally repaired with Japanese tissue. A very good copy of the first edition of the English Prayer Book printed by Baskerville. Baskerville was an innovative printer and typographer whose works are considered to be some of the most beautiful printed in the English language. Tributes to his genius as a printer include the font that bears his name, as well as nods by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The Hound of the Baskervilles) and Umberto Eco (who named the protagonist in The Name of the Rose William of Baskerville).

[544] pp. Second edition of Cambridge University printer John Baskerville's Book of Common Prayer, including the Psalter, the articles of religion, and state prayers for George II. This impression, printed in the same year as the first edition, features decorative page borders; its title-page matches the description of Gaskell's Group 2, with the third line printed in roman and the price listed as "Seven Shillings and Six Pence, unbound." The final text leaf is Ll2; there are interpolated signatures (r–z) between Q and R. Binding: Contemporary red morocco framed and panelled in gilt rolls with gilt-stamped corner fleurons, board edges and turn-ins with gilt roll; later rebacked with red morocco, spine beautifully stamped in foliate and geometric designs originally gilt but now virtually entirely black/blind. All edges gilt. Provenance: Front pastedown with armorial bookplate ("A ma puissance") of the Earl of Stamford. ESTC N32874; Gaskell, Baskerville, 12. An excellent example of the second state of this map to carry Lotter's imprint: an important map of the American northeast with an inset view of New York City This is the fifth state (with the 'Boston' reading) of a map originally issued by Matthaeus Seutter (1678- 1757) in 1730, but is also a fine example of one of the much-pirated Jansson-Visscher New England series of maps, first published by Visscher in 1651. The present Seutter/Lotter plate `is the first map in the [Jansson-Visscher] series to show ... the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania'. There are three states with Seutter's imprint, and after his death in 1757 his son-in-law, Tobias Conrad Lotter, inserted his own name and three further states were published. This is the second of those three states with the spelling of Boston corrected. To this map of the northeast is added the famous 'Restitutio View' of New York City, which celebrated the brief return to Dutch governance from late 1672 until February of 1674. This is one of the earliest views of the city. Adorning the inset view is a very elaborate tableau in which the Emperor, Charles VI, is shown attended by Hermes, god of commerce, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hera, who is standing over a chest of gold coins. Behind the divine beings, dark-skinned workers of the world carry nature's products to lay at the Emperor's feet. The Seutter / Lotter dynasty was one of the most important of all eighteenth-century German map-making firms. The business was established by Lotter's father- in-law who had trained under the renowned cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremberg. By 1731 Seutter had been appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court. On his death, Lotter continued in the same post, and with his son Mathais Albrecht Lotter produced cartographical works of a consistently high quality throughout the 18th century. Cf. Condition good plus, corners and edges rubbed, calf a little chipped at top of spine, upper hinge cracked, gilt slightly dulled on front cover, a little toning and dust soiling to 15 pages, occasional light marginal spotting, else contents clean, complete and free from annotation. Inscription on front endpaper to William Kaye 1825 from J. S(?) Gibson craig. Baskerville's beautiful Book of Common Prayer is contained within an attractive contemporary binding of Black calf with wide ornate gilt borders on the front and back covers including Crowns, Griffins Feathers and Thistles, flowers, scrolls, foliage, zig zags, hatching. Six raised bands to the spine with gilt detail on the bands, gilt titles in the second and gilt decoration in the other compartments. Ornate gilt tooling to the cover edges and inner turn-ins. Marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Gilt page edges. The Title page and the texts on each page are printed within decorative borders. (Price Seven Shillings and Six Pence, unbound) Printed in Baskerville Type, the First Edition Baskerville Book of Common Prayer, printed by one of the greatest printers of the 18th Century, John Baskerville, whose typeface is still much used and loved today. Baskerville's fine printing a joy to behold, the beauty of the type on the page and the spacing make his work instantly recognisable and easy and enjoyable to read.

Apart from the title-page and the privilege leaf, the books are identical? The wording of the dedication suggests that although Noverre was, at the time of writing, in the service of the Duke of Wurtemberg, he had not yet taken up his appointment? Esemplare nel rarissimo primo stato di sei, prima dell?indirizzo dell?editore Bouchard e Gravier e dei ritocchi a bulino. Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva priva di filigrana, con margini, consueta piega centrale verticale, nel complesso in ottimo stato di conservazione. Opera molto rara in questa tiratura. Giovanni Battista Piranesi nasce a Mogliano Veneto o Mogliano di Mestre, vicino Venezia, nel 1720 e muore a Roma nel 1778. Si può senza dubbio considerare come il più notevole incisore del secolo, ed il maggiore artista in questa materia nel periodo che va da Rembrandt a Goya. La sua opera incisa consta di oltre 1000 lavori, realizzati dal 1743 (anno della pubblicazione della prima opera), e l?anno della sua morte. La sua produzione si può dividere in più periodi: un primo nel quale si dedica ai lavori di architettura fantastica nel quale realizza tra l?altro Prima Parte di Architetture, e Prospettive inventate ed incise da Gio. Batta Piranesi Architetto Veneziano dedicate al Sig. Nicola Giobbe (1743), i celebri Grotteschi (1750), oltre al suo capolavoro assoluto, le Carceri d?invenzione, pubblicate dal suo editore Bouchard nel 1750. Nel periodo successivo rivolge la sua attenzione sui lavori di archeologia pubblicando testi come : Trofei di Ottaviano Augusto (1753), Le Rovine del Castello dell?Acqua Giulia (1761), Le Lapidi Capitoline (1762), Il Campo Marzio dell?Antica Roma, Opera di G. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper watermark, with margins, usual vertical central fold, overall in very good conditions. The example of the print here presented is a rare collector's item. Giovanni Battista Piranesi was born at Mogliano Veneto or Mogliano di Mestre, near Venice, in 1720 and died in the whereabouts of Rome in 1778. Undoubtedly he can be thought of as being the most important engraver of his century and the leading artist in this field in the period going from Rembrandt to Goya. His catalogue comprises more than one thousand engravings, created between 1743 (the year in which his first work was published), and the year of his death. His output can be divided into distinct periods. In the first of these he devoted himself to depictions of imaginary architectures among which are Prima Parte di Architetture e Prospettive inventate ed incise da Gio. Batta Piranesi Architetto Veneziano dedicate al Sig. Nicola Giobbe [First Part of Architectures and Perspectives created and engraved by Gio. Battista Piranesi Venetian Architect dedicated to Mr. Nicola Giobbe] (1743), the famed Grotteschi [Grotesques] (1750) and, finally, his absolute masterpiece, the Carceri d'invenzione [Imaginary prisons] published by his editor Bouchard in 1750. In the following period he focused his attention on archaeology publishing works related to this topic, such as the Trofei di Ottaviano Augusto [Trophies of Octavian Augustus] (1753), Le Rovine del Castello dell'Acqua Giulia [The ruins of the Castle of Acqua Giulia...] (1761), Le Lapidi Capitoline [The Capitol Memorial Plaques] (1762), Il Campo Marzio dell'Antica Roma, Opera di G. Piranesi, member of the Royal Antiquary Society of London] (1762), together with prints depicting the Lake of Albano and the towns of Cori and Paestum. His most important work in this period is the Le Antichità Romane [The Roman Antiquities], in four volumes where archaeological documentation can be seen together with remarkable achievements of the artist's imagination. Finally, in the third and last period, Piranesi's activities were characterised, as an editor, by a more commercial flavour. By this time he was already very famous and created over two hundred decorative plates depicting antiquities collected in his works Diverse maniere d'adornare i cammini [Various manners of decorating paths...] (1769) and Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal. Furthermore, during the length of his whole artistic career, Piranesi drew, engraved and composed his most important and significant work of art, the renowned Vedute di Roma [Views of Rome], in which his professional contentment in being an architect together with a personal pride in his Venetian origins can be witnessed in the title-page, signed as ?Giovan Battista Piranesi Architetto Veneziano" ["Giovan Battista Piranesi Venetian Architect"]. Tagli rossi, sguardie in marmorizzatura policroma. Alcuni fregi tipografici ornati. Una carta ripiegata f.t. incisa su rame dei dintorni di Napoli e del Vesuvio. In fine, 5 tavv. ripiegate incise su rame con vedute del Vesuvio. Bellissimo esemplare. Ex-libris nobiliare del tempo. Prima edizione francese della "Storia e fenomeni del Vesuvio" del Della Torre (Napoli, 1755), importante descrizione delle eruzioni vesuviane avvicendatesi nei secoli. La traduzione è dell'abate Péton, che non si limitò a volgere l'opera in francese, ma la ampliò e aggiornò sino al 1760 basandosi su documenti fornitigli dal Della Torre stesso. Il Della Torre (Roma-1712-Napoli, 1782), sacerdote somasco, fu fisico e naturalista. Moncada Lo Giudice, 2167: "È forse questa la prima storia generale del Vesuvio, che prende le mosse dall'eruzione descritta da Plinio... Nel gennaio 1755 il Journal des Etrangers espresse un giudizio estremamente positivo sul lavoro, che del resto ottenne buona accoglienza nell'ambiente scientifico dell'epoca".

Numerose tabelle ed esempi numerici intercalati n.t. Bellissimo e fresco esemplare. Terza edizione, rara come tutte quelle che furono impresse, di questa vasta opera di matematica pratica in tutte le sue possibili applicazioni: commercio e mercatura, astronomia, ingegneria, agrimensura, computisteria, monetazione, insegnamento, ecc. In principio della prima parte sono presenti alcuni giochi ed anagrammi numerici del padre Paolo Andrea Buffetti. L'edizione originale dell'opera era stata pubblicata in Parma, per Paolo Monti, nell'arco di quasi un ventennio (1707-1726). Il Carisi (Correggio, 1675-Mantova, 1733) sacerdote carmelitano, fu professore di aritmetica e geometria. "Lemery (1645-1715) war der vorzüglichste Reformator der pharmazeutischen Chemie in Frankreich und hat sich dadurch einen besonderen Verdienst um diese Wissenschaft erworben" (Hirsch III, 665). Lemery's chief contributions to pharmacy were his two complementary works, the 'Pharmacopée universelle' and 'Drogues Simples'. These are alphabetically arranged lists of composites and simples respectively giving the sources, virtues, doses, and therapeutic action of the various medicaments" (D.S.B. VIII, 174). The 25 engraved plates depict 400 figures of plants and some of animals.

Johann Friedrich Henckel (1679-1744) was director of mines at Freiberg; because of his numerous merits he was called 'father of mineral chemistry'. "His work on pyrites and other minerals exerted a strong influence on J.H. Pott, J.G. Lehmann, and others engaged in mineral analysis" (D.S.B. VI, p. 259). Hard cover with the original marbled boards. Has been rebound to replace the spine leather about 25 years ago. Much shelf wear is found on the outer cover and top, bottom and edges of the paper pages. The book starts with the July, 1760 issue and ends with the December, 1760 issue. Some of these are large fold-out sheets. , Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Saunders. At 46, this bulky man with fierce baggy eyes had seen 32 years of service in the British navy. Despite his deceptively quiet personality, Saunders carried out his orders with dogged determination. His career up to this point was marked by no outstanding sea victories yet he had a reputation for being one of the best and luckiest officers in the Royal Navy. Now he was placed in overall command of a quarter of the Royal Navy. , September 12 saw a good deal of activity on the part of the Royal Navy, causing Montcalm to wonder where Wolfe was with the main part of his army. Saunders had stationed his fleet opposite the Beauport Lines, he didn't give the French a moments peace all day or night. On September 18, Admiral Saunders and Brigadier General George Townshend accepted the surrender of Quebec. Yet Saunders accomplishments did not end with the conquest of Quebec, he also provided the garrison with cannons, ammunition and provisions before he left, even to the extent of reducing his ships' stores. It may be that Quebec might well have been recaptured by the French under Francis de Gaston, Chevalier de Levis the following spring if not for the troops and supplies Saunders had left behind. Horace Wallpole once said of Saunders, "No man said less and deserves more." He died in 1775 and is buried in Westminster Abbey near the Wolfe memorial. Die edle Fechtkunst in vollendeter Ausführung. 1750 verfasste Diderot einen in ganz Europa verschickten Prospekt, in dem er Interessenten zur Subskription der Encyclopédie aufrief. 1751 erschienen die beiden ersten Bände der «Encyclopédie...». Der buchhändlerische Erfolg des Werkes war enorm, doch die Jesuiten und die Sorbonne diagnostizierten eine unchristliche Tendenz und erwirkten beim königlichen Kronrat ein Verbot. Da aber Madame de Pompadour (die Mätresse von Ludwig XV.), einige Minister, viele einflussreiche Freimaurer und der Chefzensor Malesherbes auf der Seite der Encyclopédisten standen, konnten 1753-1756 trotz des Verbots vier weitere Bände erscheinen. Danach jedoch wuchs der Druck der Gegner. 1758 wurde das Verbot erneuert, 1759 setzte Papst Clemens XIII. das Werk auf den Index. Inzwischen hatte aber die Regierung die Deviseneinnahmen schätzen gelernt, die trotz des Siebenjährigen Krieges (1756-1763) durch den Verkauf der Encyclopédie aus ganz Europa hereinkamen, und man ermutigte Diderot unter der Hand zum Weitermachen. Er brachte die letzten zehn Bände samt fünf Bänden Abbildungen heraus (1765).

Il Berghem (o Berchem), pittore e incisore di origine olandese (Haarlem, 1620 - Amsterdam,1683); soggiorn? a Roma, traendo dalla campagna romana molti temi per i suoi fortunati paesaggi. Bellissima scena, molto decorativa, del porto di Genova animata da grandi figure e da animali in primo piano; dominante il bel vascello attraccato in porto. Pur considerati alcuni piccoli difetti marginali, per lo pi? al di fuori della battuta della lastra, in ottimo stato di conservazione tutto l'inciso.

Negligible light toning to margins, negligible faint crease to right side of image. A nice copy in a handsome frame. * This engraving depicts the front elevation of the original home of the Royal College of Surgeons. From 1752 to 1832 death sentences for murder in Great Britain stipulated that the condemned person's corpse be "dissected and anatomised" for the benefit of medical students shortly after the execution. This is why the Old Bailey had a surgeon's theatre. Hogarth's "The Reward of Cruelty," The Four Stages of Cruelty, Plate 4, is a satirical depiction of a dissection in this building.

Titelsidan tryckt i rött och svart. Trevligt samtida stänkdekorerat skinnbd med upphöjda bind, rikt guldornerad rygg och röd titeletikett i marokäng med texten: "Wägled: ifrå. jorden". Sprängda snitt. Ryggen lite nött och med en del ytliga sprickor. Ren inlaga som på sina håll delvis är ouppskuren. Liten reva i övre marginalen på s. 279-81. "Riks-archivum" guldpräglat på främre pärm och enligt anteckning utbytt mot ett annat exemplar med Kungliga biblioteket 1874 samt med detta biblioteks duplettmarkering i blyerts. Med G. H. Stråles och Ericsbergs biblioteks exlibris.. Utgavs av Peter Murbeck som även skrivet förordet. Författarna var bl.a. A. H. Francke och A. W. Böhme. Dessa pietistiska traktater hade på 1720-talet tryckts på svenska i Reval, då de inte fått tryckningstillstånd i Sverige. This is an ex-library copy with a perforation on the title page and an acquisition number and withdrawn stamp at the foot of the first page of the Preface. Leaf B1 is in facsimile, else this is a very good copy. The first edition, first printing of Hannah Glasse's book on confectionary . It was later reprinted by J. Cooke ca. 1770, under the title 'The Complete Confectioner', and again in 1772. In 1799 it was issued in 10 parts, edited by Mrs. Maria Wilson; these were later issued in book form in 1800. Il Lotter (1717 - 1777), editore e incisore tedesco, spos? la figlia di Matthaus Setter il vecchio. Inizio a incidere molte delle mappe del Seutter, finch? ne eredit? la tipografia verso il 1756 - 1757 e, dedicandosi completamente alla produzione cartografica, divenne uno dei cartografi pi? famosi della scuola tedesca del XVIII secolo. Le sue mappe, oltre alla chiara derivazione seutteriana, sono accomunate da un'accesa coloritura. Dopo la sua morte, l'attivit? venne proseguita dal figlio M. A. Lotter. Le opere: "Atlas Minor" (1744 ca.); "Atlas Geographicus portabilis" (1760 - 1762); "Atlas Novus" (1770); "A map of the most inhabited of New England" (1776 ca.); "Atlas Geographique" (1778); "World Map showing Cook's voyages" (M.       Kobberstik af Martinet efter eget forlæg. Med folder i papiret som ved udgivelsen i 1760. Gammel - formentlig samtidig - håndkolorering. I nyere ramme med passepartout (Brock Rammer). Rammen måler 38 x 43 cm. Fint eksemplar.. Mathurin-Jacques Brisson (1723-1806) skrev teksten til et af det 18. århundredes mest imponerende værker om fugle : "Ornithologie, ou, Méthode Contenant la Division des Oiseaux en Ordres, Sections, Genres, Espèces & Leurs Variétés..." udsendt i Paris år 1760 i 6 bind på ialt 4000 sider. Teksten var på latin og fransk og ca. 1500 fugle blev beskrevet. Mange af arterne var eksotiske og blev her for første gang præsenteret for europæere. Omkring 500 af alle fuglene blev vist på værkets 261 tavler, tegnet og stukket i kobber af Martinet.François-Nicolas Martinet (født 1731) var oprindelig uddannet som ingeniør, men når han huskes i dag er det som en af Frankrigs højest estimerede illustratorer af fuglebøger i det 18. århundrede. Et af hans kendteste arbejder er illustrationerne til ovennævnte værk af Brisson

      Manoscritto cartaceo apografo in-4° (250x185mm), legato in cartonatura rustica coeva con titolo calligrafato al tempo al dorso, constante di pp. 1 di frontespizio e 245 di testo, vergate opistograficamente in bella e nitida grafia corsiva. Ogni pagina presenta 25 linee di testo ca. Bellissimo stato conservativo. Il Cardinal Passionei (Fossombrone, 1682-Roma, 1761), legato pontificio a Parigi e inviato in delicate missioni in vari stati europei (fu inquisitore a Malta e nunzio apostolico a Lucerna e poi a Vienna), bibliotecario della Vaticana, fu appassionato bibliofilo, raccoglitore di volumi e manoscritti rari oggi serbati nella Biblioteca Angelica di Roma. Il presente manoscritto si oppone recisamente alla beatificazione del Bellarmino, la cui causa aveva avuto inizio nel 1627, sotto Urbano VIII. Tale causa, assai controversa per le disparatissime valutazioni sulla figura del celebre gesuita, si arenò e venne reintrodotta a più riprese, venendo condotta a termine solo nel 1923, sotto il pontificato di Pio XI. La presente opera venne data alle stampe nel 1761 dal Bettinelli di Venezia (non è possibile determinare se il manoscritto sia antecedente alla pubblicazione a stampa o se le segua e si tratti, dunque, di una sua trascrizione apografa).

"Semiramis, ninth-century queen of Assyria (present-day Iraq), was, until the early twentieth century, a figure of legend that had been well- established as of the classical period: begotten of the fish-goddess Atargatis and fed by doves until her rescue by a royal shepherd; bride of general Onnes and successor to his power and eventually to the throne of Assyria; founder of Babylon and every other monument in the region; long- lived, brave, wise and sexually potent, she was turned into a dove at her death and worshipped subsequently as a surrogate of the Assyrian fertility goddess Astarte. Modern archaeological research by Lehman-Haupt and others has largely replaced legend with history, but the legend was still alive and well in Voltaire's time. She was a female personification of all that was gaudy and glorious in pre- Christian antiquity, and she furnished good material for this tragedy (Voltaire's preference in drama), composed in 1748, a year after his conte philosophique ZADIG. Jacob Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-90) var tysk präst, botaniker, mykolog, entomolog, ornitolog och uppfinnare. Parallellt med sin prästerliga bana utgav han 1759 "Erlechterte Arzney-Kräuterwissenschaft", en botanisk handbok för läkare och farmaceuter om medicinska effekter av växter. 1762-64 skrev han fyra rikt illustrerade volymer inom mykologi, "Natürlich ausgemahlten Abbildungen baierischer und pfälzischer Schwämme, welche um Regensburg wachsen". 1774 utkom "Elementa Ornithologica", i vilken han framlade ett system för klassificering av fåglar baserade på benens struktur. Detta arbete följdes upp med "Museum Ornithologicum" 1789, i vilket han beskriver arter i sina egna samlingar. Inom entomologien publicerade Schäffer 1779 ett arbete som omfattade tre volymer, "Icones insectorum circa ratisbonam indigenorum coloribus naturam referentibus expressae", vilket innehöll 280 handmålade planscher föreställande omkring 3000 insekter. En introduktion till entomologien, "Elementa entomologica", följde 1789. Schäffer hade även en omfattande kuriosakabinett, "Schaefferianum Museum", vilken var öppen för allmänheten och som Goethe besökte under sin resa till Italien. Som medlem av talrika akademier korresponderade han med många naturforskare, inklusive Carl von Linné. Naturforskning var inte det enda område som intresserade honom. Han utförde experiment med elektricitet, färger och optik och uppfann även en tidig tvättmaskin, vilket han presenterade 1767 i "Die bequeme und höchstvortheilhafte Waschmaschine". Andra uppfinningar var bl.a. en såg och en ny masugn. Pappersframställning var ochså något som han intresserade sig för under 1765-71, vilket resulterade i "Versuche und Muster, ohne alle Lumpen oder doch put einem geringen Zusatze derselben, Papier zu machen". Detta arbete visade att sådant som olika växter, t.ex. poppel, mossa och humle kunde användas vid papperstillverkning

      56 x 72 cm, unter Passepartout in blattvergoldetem Rahmen, 36 x 51 cm, Tadell. Johann Ludwig Aberli (1723-1786) stammte aus einer in Winterthur ansässigen Familie. Seine Lehre absolvierte er bei Heinrich Meyer. Mit 18 Jahren zog er nach Bern, wo er als Dekorationsmaler tätig war und sich in der Zeichenschule von Johann Grimm weiterbildete, dessen Nachfolge er 1747 antrat. Nach der Heirat wurde 1748 sein einziges Kind geboren. Unter dem Einfluss des damals in Bern tätigen Emanuel Handmann übte sich Aberli anfangs in der Porträtmalerei, die ihm die Existenz sicherte. Im Sommer 1759 reiste er zusammen mit dem Radierer Adrian Zingg nach Paris, um im Atelier von Johann Georg Wille zu arbeiten. Er nahm teil an Wanderungen in die ländliche Umgebung der Stadt und zeichnete «nach der Natur». Er lernte damals auch den Betrieb einer gut organisierten Arbeitsgemeinschaft von Kupferstechern, Radierern und Druckern kennen. 1762 unternahm er mit dem Frankfurter Landschaftsmaler Christian Georg Schütz (1718-1791) eine Malerreise ins Berner Oberland. Mit dem Zürcher Maler-Dichter Salomon Gessner stand er in Briefkontakt. Durch den Idylliker ermuntert, beschäftigte sich Aberli mit den Ideen der neuen Empfindsamkeit. Die politische Situation in Europa förderte damals die Produktion von Veduten. Nach Beendigung des Siebenjährigen Krieges ergossen sich Besucherströme an den Genfersee und ins Berner Oberland; die ausländischen Touristen und Touristinnen begehrten Abbilder dieser Gegenden. Aberli kam diesen Wünschen entgegen und begann, Schweizer Ansichten anzufertigen, die leicht zu transportieren waren, vorzugsweise auf Papier in kleinen Formaten. Aberli und bald auch seine Nachahmer wurden deshalb «Kleinmeister» genannt. Der junge Aberli zeichnete vorerst in der Art der zeitgenössischen Porzellanmalerei «erfundene Landschaften», die von Johann Andreas Pfeffel (1715-1768) in Augsburg 1750 radiert wurden. Es folgten weitere «Landschäftlein», Phantasiestücke in Kleinformat, angereichert durch architektonische Staffagen. Wohl im Zusammenhang mit dem Auftrag, die Planvedute der Stadt Bern von Gregorius Sikkinger aus den Jahren 1603-07 zu kopieren, für den er 1754 die Bezahlung erhielt, zeichnete Aberli zwei grossformatige wirklichkeitsgetreue Ansichten der Stadt Bern, die von Adrian Zingg radiert wurden. Nachdem er 1759 in Paris Landschaftszeichnungen namhafter Künstler, vermutlich auch von Claude Lorrain, studiert und ab 1762 Anregungen von Christian Georg Schütz aufgenommen hatte, gelang es ihm, vor Ort skizzierte Veduten im Atelier auf persönliche Art umzusetzen: Er zeichnete in einer Weise, die es erlaubte, die Örtlichkeiten wiederzuerkennen. Danach veränderte er die Topografie behutsam, schuf Bildkompositionen mit rahmenden Versatzstücken aus Bäumen und Hügelkuppen sowie mit Flächen gliedernden Bodenformationen und belebte diese Darstellungen mit wenigen Figuren. Auf das Liniengerüst legte er durchsichtige, zarte Farben. Er distanzierte sich von der handelsüblichen Prospektmalerei, indem er die darzustellenden Landstriche in eine arkadische Sphäre versetzte. Selbst wenn er eine Ansicht mehrmals kopierte, führte er Feder und Pinsel in einer stets gleichbleibenden Geschmeidigkeit, so dass auch die Repliken den Anschein von Frische und von der Spontaneität des Arbeitens «d'après nature» aufweisen. Um die Kopiertätigkeit zu erleichtern, entwickelte er eine rationellere Methode: Er übertrug die Hauptlinien der Tuschzeichnung mit der Radiernadel auf die Kupferplatte und druckte in Auflagenhöhe. Anschliessend folgte die Kolorierung der Umrissradierungen, zuerst sparsam in lichten Grautönen, dann in einigen stark verdünnten Grundfarben, hauptsächlich in Rosa und Hellblau, Grün und Rostrot, mit wenig Gelb. Aberli verfuhr dabei mit derselben Sorgfalt wie bei den Originalblättern. Die grosse Nachfrage rief nach erweiterter Produktion; es wurden Gehilfen eingestellt. Die Farbgebung kann deshalb in Werken aus dieser Zeit leicht variieren. Bald sprach man von der «Aberlischen Manier», die grosse Nachahmung fand. Obgleich Zeichner und Aquarellmaler, war Aberli auch fähig, grossformatige Gemälde zu fertigen, wie einige Werke, meist in Privatbesitz, zeigen. Die Radiertechnik beherrschte er zwar, aber da der Umgang mit Säure seiner Gesundheit abträglich war, zog er dazu Helfer bei: Adrian Zingg, Carl Gottlieb Guttenberg (1743-1790), Matthias Pfenninger, Balthasar Anton Dunker und zunehmend Heinrich Rieter. Spätestens ab 1766 edierte er die ersten kolorierten Umrissradierungen. Damals erhielt er von der Berner Regierung ein Schutzprivileg zum alleinigen Vertrieb seiner Blätter. Zunächst schuf er Landschaften in mittlerem Format; sie zeigen Örtlichkeiten im Kanton Bern, und zwar paarweise: Vue prise du Château de Thoun und Vue de Nidau, et du Lac de Bienne (1766); Une Partie des Glacieres du Grindelwald und Chute d'Eau apellée Staubbach dans la Vallée Louterbrunen (1768); Vue du Village et du Lac de Brientz und La Vallée Oberhasli (1769), La Ville de Berne du coté du Nord und eine Aussicht gegen die Alpen, Dessiné sur les Remparts a Berne (1770), schliesslich die Ansichten vom Genfersee: Vûë de Vevey und Vûë de Lausanne (1773-74). Nur drei dieser Motive übertrug Aberli eigenhändig auf die Platten: Die Ansicht der Stadt Bern von Norden, die Aussicht von der Berner Schanze sowie die Übersicht über das Haslital. Die Veduten erfreuten sich ausserordentlicher Beliebtheit. Als die geätzten Kupferplatten keine weiteren qualitätvollen Drucke mehr erlaubten, mussten neue hergestellt werden. Diese Aufgabe übernahm vermutlich Heinrich Rieter. Zwischen 1779 und etwa 1784 gestaltete Aberli grossformatige kolorierte Umrissradierungen: Vûe de Cerlier et du Lac de Bienne; Vûe d'Yverdon, prise depuis Clindi; Vûe du chateau de Wimmis et des environs; Vûe dessinée à Mouri prés de Berne. Die Skizzen dazu, gemalt und gezeichnet im Freien, sowie die im Atelier ausgeführten Studien und die Vorlagen, bestimmt zur Übertragung auf die Kupferplatte, befinden sich heute in verschiedenen Sammlungen. Es sind leicht hingemalte Aquarelle und Federzeichnungen in lockerem, feinnervigem Duktus. Die nach diesen Vorlagen angefertigten Radierungen wirken vergleichsweise trocken in der Nadelführung und kleinteilig in der Pinselarbeit. Für die technische Umsetzung war vermutlich Heinrich Rieter zuständig, der im Atelier ab 1777 der bedeutendste Assistent war. Nach Aberlis Tod im Jahr 1786 übernahm er aus dem Nachlass die Kupferplatten und besorgte weiterhin die Edition der beliebten Ansichten. 8Tobias Pfeifer-Helke, 2007, SIK)
