The prelims and pages 1-4 inclusive are, sadly, lacking, making it difficult to definitely identify which this is of the several editions published between 1720 and 1764, although it does include the County maps. The maps have not been coloured, the pages appear to be untrimmed, and minor chipping of the edges of a few pages has been professionally repaired. The spine and covers appear to be an early rebinding, with the original (?) tooled leather covers laid on. The end papers are quite new. Overall, a nice collectible copy.         L' Afrique Divisee En Ses Principaux Etats...

Double page engraved map (29" x 21"), hand colored in outline, decorative cartouche. Some chips and tears in margins, but margins are wide, a little creasing around the centerfold, minor aging; otherwise about very good, bright and with a strong impression. Janvier was a French geographer that was active in the second half of the 18th century. According to Norwich and Tooley, Janvier produced a series of maps in 1760, and collaborated in an Atlas Moderne in 1762 and 1771.The present map is number 28 from that atlas. This rather handsome engraved map, which has full color, appears to present the cartographic knowledge of Africa in the mid 18th century. The present map was originally published in 1762, in a slightly smaller version. However, this edition appears to have has greater detail, and this is especially true in the interior and southern portion of the continent. There is a decorative cartouche in the upper left corner that features a lion coming out of the jungle. Norwich 104. Tooley p. 59.

An Introduction to the True Astronomy: or, Astronomical Lectures, Read in the Astronomical School of the University of Oxford

London: J. Buckland and others, 1760. Octavo, with 25 folding plates in series and two finely engraved folding lunar charts, very good in worn contemporary calf, spine label chipped, front hinge becoming tender. From the library of John Harrison. A wonderful survival: an important eighteenth-century handbook of astronomy from the library of the great watchmaker John Harrison, inventor of the marine chronometer that revolutionised the study of longitude and which was prized by Captain Cook and his compatriots. The book bears Harrison's armorial bookplate and ownership inscription 'E Libris Jn. Harrison July 23d 1766' above the initials 'JH' to the title-page in Harrison's distinctive hand.Astronomer and mathematician John Keill (1671-1721) was one of the new generation of scientists who flourished alongside Sir Isaac Newton at Oxford University. This treatise on astronomy was first published in 1721 and enjoyed no less than seven editions through the eighteenth-century as new discoveries and theories came to light. It provided a summary of contemporary knowledge for students, scientists and all those whose work was affected by discoveries in astronomy. As a result, the presence of this scholarly work of astronomy in Harrison's library confirms that he had made a study of the theoretical aspects of the study of longitude, important because it would have helped him in his thorny dealings with the Commissioners of the Board of Longitude, many of whom were astronomers themselves. An Introduction to the True Astronomy contains three separate discussions of longitude showing widely accepted approaches to the problem. The first entry relates to the abandonment of the ancient rough reckoning of longitude from the most westerly known meridian and its replacement with the Greenwich prime meridian. The second entry describes the true method of finding longitude from eclipses of the sun and moon and is accompanied by a folding plate with five detailed figures. The last entry examines the use of eclipses on Jupiter's moons, a conceptually pleasing yet technically difficult method. Interestingly, the longitude of planets and stars themselves is also earnestly considered.

Ynddiddan Rhwng Wr Dall Ar ANGEU Neu Rybydd I Bawb Ynghyd Annogaeth I Ymbaratoi

Shrewsbury?: Thomas Durston?, 1760 Ynddiddan Rhwng Wr Dall Ar ANGEU Neu Rybydd I Bawb Ynghyd Annogaeth I Ymbaratoi Erbyn Awr Angeu. Gwrandewch Addyfc a Byddwch Ddoethion, Nag Ymwrthodwch a Hi. Dihar 8. 30.. Shrewsbury?, Thomas Durston? c 1760?, 10*16.5cm, 16 pp, large woodcut of death discoursing with a man on title page, some outer margins shaved, affecting a few letters. A rare 18th century Welsh Ballad, a dialogue between death and an old man in 98 stanzas, beginning: Yr heneint mwyn Penllwydion, gwyr Ifenge teg ei gram, A ddeweh yn nes ei wrando, yn fawrion ag yn fan .. The subtitle roughly translates as a warning for all with help for preperation for the hour of death. The woodcut on the title page shows a skeletal figure of Death with an arrow discoursing with an old man. The title-page of another 18th C edition of this ballad, printed by Thomas Durston at Shrewsbury, with the same woodcut of death and the old man, is reproduced as image 51 in Philip Henry Jones (ed), A Nation and its books, a history of the books in Wales (Aberystwyth, 1998). The accompanying caption reads An eighteenth-century Shrewsbury printed ballad, Ymddiddan rhwng Hen wr Dall ar Angeu. For once, the illustration related to the text: Death holds forth to the blind old man. First published in Cynghorian Tad i'w Fab (London, 1683). This ballad retained its popularity well into the nineteenth century. Due to the same woodcut being used it would seem likely that this edition was also printed in Shrewsbury. Not in Rees. Davies, A bibliography of Welsh Ballads (London 1911) records another edition printed by Thomas Durston (no 5). This edition not in ESTC.         Untitled Watercolor of a Maritime Scene

      - Little is known about Samuel Atkins, a watercolor marine artist, who worked during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in London in 1760, Atkins began exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy in 1787 and would continue to do so over the next 21 years. Atkins sailed with the East India Trading Company from 1796 to 1804, thus many of his works include Trading Company portraiture and vessels. The skillful mastery of Atkins's maritime scenes reflects the expertise he gained during these voyages. Upon returning to England, Atkins entered his last Royal Academy exhibition in 1808. He taught drawing before his death in 1810 at the age of 50. This untitled work demonstrates Atkins's remarkable skill as a watercolorist. Both vessels are finely detailed and nautically accurate in regards to their masts, and rigging from bow to stern. Each ship flies the civil ensign of the British Empire marking them as merchant vessels. Atkins's use of grays and blues demonstrates the powerful ocean on which he sails. Samuel Atkins works can be found in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, both in London, and the National Maritime Museum, in Greenwich England, and the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts.
