Scenographia Pontis hodie Mollis

Rome - John Wilton-Ely 600The watermark that is present is number 33 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1161 and is dated between 1760 to 1761.This print is from the series \"Il Campo Marzio dell\' Antica Roma\"\"The Campo Marzio occupies a special place in Piranesi\'s artistic development, in terms of both his ideas and his imaginative use of visual techniques in support of them. Like the other treaties of the 1760s, this work is a sophisticated blend of archaeology and polemic in which historical evidence is employed to defend the creative genius of Rome. There are also sugns of the artist\'s growing concern with the problem of modern design, and the publication is, significantly dedicated to the British architect Robert Adam, who shared Piranesi\'s belief in the imaginative use of antiquity.\" (John Wilton Ely II pg 613)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and \"like Callot makes great use of the swelling line\" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi\'s own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons,

Lettres et Memoires Pour servir a L'histoire Naturelle, Civile et Politique Du Cap Breton, Depuis Son Etablissment Jusqu'a La Reprise De Cette Isle Par Les Anglois En 1758

The Hague and London: Pierre grosse and Jean Nourse, 1760. 12mo., (6 4/8 x 4 inches). Half-title. Contemporary French mottled calf, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated with small floral tools (head of the spine chipped with minor loss and lower joint just starting, corners worn with minor loss). First Edition of "One of the few reliable published sources...about the French in Acadia during the 18th century"(DCB). "Pichon came to Canada from France in 1751 as secretary (till 1753) to the governor of Cape Breton (Jean-Louis de Raymond); he served in the vicinity till 1758...(TPL). "Pichon's work, composed in the form of letters written from Louisbourg, beginning in 1752 and ending with the capitulation of that fortress to the English in 1758, constitutes one of the few reliable published sources about the French in Acadia during the 18th century"(DCB). The letters provide a clear and accurate description of Ile Saint-Jean (Prince Edward Island), the trade with New England, the manners and customs of the Micmac and Malecite Indians, the French government in Louisbourg, military events and the causes of the war. One of Pichon's major responsibilities during his brief appointment was preparing the governor's reports to France, a task which allowed him to gather much valuable information he was to use in the writing of this book. Sent to Fort Beausejour (Chignecto), in 1753 he succumbed to the bribes of the commanding officer at Fort Lawrence, Captain George Scott and for more than a year engaged in espionage and subterfuge against the French under the assumed name Tyrell. The information he sold to Scott apparently enabled Col. Robert Monckton to capture the French fort at Chignecto in 1755. After some time spent as a prisoner of war, Pichon retired to England, where he was awarded a pension. Lande 710; Sabin 62610; Staton & Tremaine/TPL 274. Ynddiddan Rhwng Wr Dall Ar ANGEU Neu Rybydd I Bawb Ynghyd Annogaeth I Ymbaratoi.

Thomas Durston?, Shrewsbury? 1760 - Ynddiddan Rhwng Wr Dall Ar ANGEU Neu Rybydd I Bawb Ynghyd Annogaeth I Ymbaratoi Erbyn Awr Angeu. Gwrandewch Addyfc a Byddwch Ddoethion, Nag Ymwrthodwch a Hi. Dihar 8. 30. Shrewsbury?, Thomas Durston? c 1760?, 10*16.5cm, 16 pp, large woodcut of death discoursing with a man on title page, some outer margins shaved, affecting a few letters. A rare 18th century Welsh Ballad, a dialogue between death and an old man in 98 stanzas, beginning: Yr heneint mwyn Penllwydion, gwyr Ifenge teg ei gram, A ddeweh yn nes ei wrando, yn fawrion ag yn fan . The subtitle roughly translates as a warning for all with help for preperation for the hour of death. The woodcut on the title page shows a skeletal figure of Death with an arrow discoursing with an old man. The title-page of another 18th C edition of this ballad, printed by Thomas Durston at Shrewsbury, with the same woodcut of death and the old man, is reproduced as image 51 in Philip Henry Jones (ed), A Nation and its books, a history of the books in Wales (Aberystwyth, 1998). The accompanying caption reads An eighteenth-century Shrewsbury printed ballad, Ymddiddan rhwng Hen wr Dall ar Angeu. For once, the illustration related to the text: Death holds forth to the blind old man. First published in Cynghorian Tad i'w Fab (London, 1683). This ballad retained its popularity well into the nineteenth century. Due to the same woodcut being used it would seem likely that this edition was also printed in Shrewsbury. Not in Rees. Davies, A bibliography of Welsh Ballads (London 1911) records another edition printed by Thomas Durston (no 5). This edition not in ESTC. The Praise of Hell: Or, A View of the Infernal Regions (2 Vols.)

London: G. Kearsly, 1760. "Containg Some Account of the Advantages of That Place, With Respect to Its Antiquity, Situation, and Stability. Together with a Description of Its Inhabitants; Their Dresses, Manners, Amusements, and Employments. To Which Is Added A Detail of the Laws, Government, and Constitution of Hell." 1st English language edition, 1760, originally published in French the previous year as "Eloge d'Enfer". A very clean, well-preserved set. Modern quarter calf over marbled boards. Raised bands, bright gilt-lettering to spines, new endsheets. A solid VG+ to Near Fine set with only light, occasional foxing. 2 beautiful engraved frontispieces, 6 plates. 16 mos, 415 pgs. all told. A puzzling work in which the author appears to make Lucifer's home seem more attractive than the alternative. He tells of the many important figures of the church who reside there, such as Alexander VI, and the many learned divines, including Albertus Magnus and Duns Scotus. Hell is easy to get to, so legend has it, and one meets all the most important people there. A wonderfully wicked--and very attractive-- mid 18th century look at hell. . First Thus. Collectible; Very Good.

Alcuni finalini incisi.

Illustrated with Copper Plates [AND] Thompson (George): A Description of the Chapel Royal, called, The Pantheon or, Burial Place of the Kings of Spain. Translated from the Spanish of Frey Franciso de los Santos.

London Printed by Dryden Leach For S. Hooper. 1760 - FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION. 2 parts bound in one volume. 4to, 184 x 109 mms., pp. xxxvii [xxxviii blank], 299 [300 blank], including half-title, engraved coat of arms on verso of errata leaf before dedication and list of subscribers; xi [xii blank], 60, 12 folding engraved plates at end of volume, contemporary calf, red leather label; upper front joint cracked and front joint slightly creased, corners a bit worn, some other very slight wear to the volume, but a good copy. The subscribers include the usual clutch of Royal Highnesses and the nobility, and luminaries such as Ralph Allen, the playwright and novelist Richard Cumberland, the antiquary and book collector Richard Fenton, David Garrick, John Hall Stephenson [sic, for Stevenson], Jonas Hanway, Thomas North, Lawrence [sic] Sterne, Voltaire, and William Warburton. The first edition of Santos' book was published in 1657 in Madrid, Descripcio?n del Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo del Escorial. The Escorial is said to be based on descriptions of Solomon's Temple; whatever its inspiration or source, it can easily survive the cliché of being described as one of the most remarkable buildings in the world. Thompson's translation is still one of the most useful accounts of the palace. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Le Berger Recompensé [The Shepherd Repaid]

Paris: chéz L'Auteur reu St. Jacques au dessus des Jacobins, 1760. A lovely pastoral print after the celebrated French Rococo artist Francois Boucher. Francois Boucher (1703-1770) was one of the most versatile and influential French artists of the eighteenth century. He not only decorated palaces and private residences, but also painted portraits, landscapes, and mythological scenes; and designed opera sets, porcelains, and tapestries. He was a prolific painter and draftsman and he excelled in cabinet-sized paintings for collectors, many of which were reproduced in print in an effort to satisfy the demands of eager connoisseurs. He began his career producing reproductive engravings of Watteau's paintings, but he quickly became one of the most fashionable artists in Paris. He was favoured by the King's mistress, Madame du Pompadour, and quickly became "premier peintre" to Louis XV. Boucher rejuvenated the 'pastoral tradition' in French art, and was instrumental in developing the Rococo style which characterized French art during Louis XV's reign. This sublime print by the Parisian engraver Robert Gaillard is an evocative example of Boucher's sumptuous style of painting. A reclining shepherd has been playing the pipes beside the path where a pretty peasant girl passes by. They share a powerful gaze, and the girl offers him a wreath of spring flowers. The image is strikingly vibrant. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes , p. 261, no.27. Engraving. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some light foxing. Creases on side and bottom of sheet where it has been folded. Trimmed within the platemark on the upper margin. Image size: 17 1/4 x 14 3/16 inches.

A View of Coombank near Sevenoak in Kent, the Seat of the Honble. Lieutt. Genl. Campbell / Veüe de Coombank, dans la Comté de Kent. Maison de L'honble. Lieutt. Genl. Campbell

Printed for John Bowles & Son, at the Black Horse in Cornhill, T. Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard, Robt. Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street. J. Boydell, London 1760 - A fine image of the verdant country estate of General Campbell, Baron Sundridge of Coombank. Born in Maidstone in 1735, William Woollett was one of the most renowned landscape engravers of his time and the first English engraver to achieve popular success in continental Europe. His artistic aptitude became apparent at an early age, and he was sent to London to train at St. Martin's Lane Academy and apprentice with the engraver and printseller John Tinney. Woollett began his career with a series of topographical views, but first truly distinguished himself as skilled engraver with the publication of his print of Richard Wilson's Destruction of the Children of Niobe . His copious plates after artists such as Stubbs, Vernet, and Claude proved so popular, that many of them were copied by engravers on the Continent. Beginning in 1766, he became an active member of the Society of Artists, where he served in a variety of positions. Although he specialized in landscapes, Woollett also engraved a number of marine and historical scenes including the print for which he is most famous, Death of General Wolfe after Benjamin West, and for which he was received the honorable title of Historical Engraver to His Majesty. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography. Engraving, printed on fine laid paper. Very good condition.
