Nova relação do encontro que tiveram os Argelinos com hum navio Frances mercante: e noticia, que dahi resultou.

N.p., n.pr., ca. 1750-1760. - 4°, disbound. Caption title. Some small, relatively light waterstains at inner margins. In good condition. 8 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this Portuguese newsletter about the capture by Algerian pirates of a French merchant ship on its way from Cadiz to Marseilles. The French consul at Algiers, protesting the enslavement of the crew, was ineffectual until word came that Louis XV was assembling a squadron at Toulon. The ruler of Algiers repented and returned the ship and captives. When this account was published, it was unknown whether the squadron would be dispersed or sent to attack Algiers. The author, who clearly believes a show of force against the Barbary pirates is long overdue, cites the events of the 1680s, when Louis XIV sent a squadron to bombard Algiers, resulting in a 1690 treaty with France that protected its shipping for many years.*** Not in Innocêncio. Coimbra, Miscelâneas 498: lists as Relação (Nova) do encontro . Porbase cites a single copy, in poor condition, in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Not located in Copac, Catnyp, Hollis, Orbis or Melvyl. KVK (44 databases searched) locates of the copy cited by Porbase. No copy located in The European Library. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Antique Master Print-ROMANCE-FRENCH COSTUME-MARRIAGE-LOVE-Maucler-Challe-1760

      - Plate : 'Quand l'Hymen dort, l'Amour Veille'. (When marriage sleeps, love wakes). This plate shows a romantic scene with 18th century French costumes. A woman slips a love-note to her paramour into the quiver of a statue of Cupid. The lover is watching in excited expectation from behind a tree, while the woman's husband is sleeping beside her. A stunning romantic print exhibiting the best of French Rococo art. Very rare. Stipple and line engraving with plate colouring, on a verge type handlaid paper. This impression is a good example of early colour printing, which was developed as a means of reproducing the effects of painting in oils. It exemplifies the single plate colour printing technique used in England, then adopted in France, at the close of the eighteenth century The effect is achieved by inking a single plate with several colours, using a rag stump, known as "a la poupee". Description: This masterprint was published in Paris by Vidal ca. 1760. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters.Artists and Engravers: This plate engraved by Maucler after Challe. Engraver: E. Maucler (active 1750-1770). Artist: Charles Michel Ange Challe (1718-1778) was a French painter, architect and mathematician. He was born in Paris, and studied under Andre, Lemoine and Boucher. Although he never gained much fame as a painter, as an architect and draughtsman to the king he directed numerous feasts on the occasion of the birth of Louis XVI, as well as the funerals of the Dauphin and Dauphiness, the King of Poland, the Queen of Spain and Louis XV. Condition: Excellent, given age. Two small tears in the bottom margin, backed with acid-free archival tape. A small crease in the bottom margin. None of this affects the image itself. General age-related toning and/or occasional light stains from handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: TPCLA-P6-15 TPC The overall size is ca. 17.7 x 13.8 inch.         1760 Francis Parris - Cambridge Bible

      - Francis Sawyer Parris's 1760 Cambridge (Bentham, printer) edition, "Newly translated out of the original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by his majesty's special command." This is the final edition in Parris's lifetime. This edition is especially scarce. E.S.T.C. only finds five locations worldwide: British Lib; Univ. Cambridge (4 copies)' Lib. of Va. New York Public Lib.' Univ. Of Houston. This edition predates and is even rare than Parris's superb Cambridge (Bentham) 1762 folio edition, proof-read by Henry Therefold, for which Parris's contribution was first publicly recognized. (David Norton, in his A textual history of the King James Bible; Cambridge, 2005; p. 104, confirms as a myth, the story of the 1762 edition being destroyed in a fire.) Regard by Bible bibliographers and textual critics as the 'Standard Parris Edition,' notwithstanding that Parris had died two years before, and ignoring the earlier 1760 edition. (The 1762 folio edition included the impressive Parris/Therold marginalia, absent from the octavo edition.) Francis Sawyer Parris, Biblical scholar, had checked and proofed the text of Brenhaw's Cambridge edition of 1743 (Darlow & Moule, 807; Herbert, 1063). He continued work on Cambridge Bibles for the next 17 years, though his contribution appears not to have been publicly recognized until Bentham's 1762 folio edition 2 years after his death. This 1760 edition is one of the most important Bible printings of the 18th century. This 1760 Octavo edition the first to have Parris's finalized text. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

American Mathematical Textbooks 1760-1850 : Collection for sale

1760-1850. A substantial collection of American textbooks of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, including representative selections of primers combining lessons in spelling, reading, and writing with arithmetic, designated for use in schools, academies, and lyceums; textbooks of natural philosophy, astronomy, and mathematical geography specified for use in colleges; and ready-reckoners and other books of tables intended for tradesmen. Although textbooks for all levels of instruction are offered, the collection is strongest in those prepared for use in elementary and secondary schools. The reform of mathematical education through the introduction of "Pestalozzian" or child-centred methods of instruction is thus amply documented. The collection was built using as a guide Louis C. Karpinski's magisterial Bibliography of mathematical works printed in America through 1850 (Ann Arbor 1940, with three supplements published 1941-1954). Karpinski investigated the holdings of more than one hundred libraries and found that nine had purposefully collected in this field. According to his tabulated analysis, our collection would have occupied sixth rank, nearly approximating the holdings of Columbia University, exceeding those of Boston Public Library and New York Public Library. We offer 269 different works, plus 192 subsequent editions, for a total of 511 printed books, and in addition five manuscript ciphering and exercise books. Thirty-three eighteenth-century books are offered, fifty-five printed 1801-1810, sixty-five printed 1811-1820, ninety-five printed 1821-1830, 129 printed 1831-1840, 124 printed 1841-1850, and ten printed post-1850. Forty-one books in the collection are editions not recorded by Karpinski. Twenty-six books represent editions not yet recorded in the American Bibliography 1801-1819 (New York 1958-1966) and Checklist of American Imprints 1820-1844 (New York, Metuchen & London 1964-1993), the principal bibliographical tools available for the study of nineteenth-century American books. Another seventeen books in the collection have imprints different to those stated in the Checklist. With few exceptions, the books are offered in original condition and in original bindings, and the collection is thus of interest also to historians of the book. Textbooks published in the period before 1820 commonly were offered in three styles of binding: scaleboard (a shingle of wood, backed with leather, finished with either blue paper or marbled paper on covers), leather-backed boards covered by marbled paper, and full leather. In this collection, twenty books are in scaleboard bindings, forty-five in paper boards finished with marbled paper, and 259 in full-leather, the most expensive (and durable) binding. About 1820, a type of publishers' binding with printed covers became popular. Eighty-nine books are in such bindings, the earliest published in 1815, and several of these binding contribute valuable bibliographical evidence. A few books still retain coverings in cloth and paper fashioned by pupils to protect them from wear. As a rule, textbooks have been inscribed, drawn-on, or otherwise marked, more consistently than most books, by readers who are not usually purchasers. Few owners failed to write at least their names on the endleaves; many pupils added incantations against borrowers and thieves of books, sentimental verses of affection to other students, comments upon their classmates and teachers, drawings, rubbings of coins, pen trails and scrolls. Textbooks preserved in libraries are routinely rebound and this evidence of ownership discarded, to the detriment of scholarship. For example, forty books in this collection have ownership inscriptions by girls. When mathematics became inserted in the elementary curriculum, it was taught to boys and girls alike, however girls did not progress to study algebra and geometry. Ownership entries in books in this collection suggests that the moment of transition, when the stereotype of the non-mathematical feminine mind eroded sufficiently for algebra and geometry to be taught to girls, occurred about 1840. This early date contradicts suppositions about the elementary curriculum made recently by several historians. For additional information, click the PDF icon above.

Zeit mit typographischem Rückenschild u. dezenter Rückenvergoldung. Erste Ausgabe. Edinburgh Evening Courant. June 4, 1760 - Sept. 7, 1761. Approx. 195 issues. Folio.

Edinburgh: printed for R. Fleming and Company. 1760-61 - 36 x 24cm. (14 x 9½ inches.) 4 pages. Thrice weekly. Price 3½d. Halfpenny stamp. First 2, and final issue defective, issue for June 22, 1761 with rectangular paper repair to central crease not affecting sense; trimmed close to top edge with occasional sl. loss, some occasional water staining; issues mostly good & clean. Half calf, spine rebacked with paper. Published between Dec. 1718 - Dec. 1871. ESTC P2048. Preceded by only a handful of papers, most notably the Edinburgh Gazette, 1699, and the Edinburgh Courant, 1705. The 4 pages usually comprise two sides of advertisements (occasionally illustrated), foreign news - defeat of the French in India, the March of Russian troops into Berlin and battles in America between the British and French armies and Indian tribes - and a leading article or correspondence. These letters and articles provide both domestic & foreign news: from the death and interment of George II (Oct. 29 - Nov. 12, 1760), the court-martial of Admiral Byng (Aug. 23, 1760) and ?the unhappy murder of Mr Mathews? (Sept. 10, 1760), to a ?description of an entertainment given by the Indians of North America? (Oct 25 1760), an ?extract from the celebrated life of Mr Handel (Aug. 4, 1760) and numerous letters from soldiers in America (Oct. 4, 1760). For those unfortunate enough to be bitten by a mad dog, a rather painful remedy is suggested by J. Parsons on August 30, 1760 - the rubbing of salt into the wound.

The Works of Mr William Shakespear Volume the Third

Printed for Hitch and Hawes et al., London; 1760. 32mo. This is the third volume of the complete works of shakespeare, a very rare 18th century volume edited by Sir Thomas Hanmer, based on the editions by Pope and Theobold. This volume contains the plays 'As You Like It', 'The Taming of the Shrew', 'All's Well That Ends Well' and 'Tweflth Night; or What You WIll'.This exceptional book is tightly bound in leather with gilt lettering to the spine. There is the inevitable rubbing to the covers for a book this age and some bumping and chipping to the spine ends and corners. However, this little book is in excellent condition. Internally, there is a very small, neat ownership inscription to the front free endpaper and some mild age spotting and toning to the endpapers and page extremities. Apart from this, there is only very slight age spotting on the main pages, which is remarkable for a book of this age. In all, this little book is indeed a rare find, being both a scarce volume and in such lovely condition. This is a must have for any literature collector or Shakespeare enthusiast and would make an excellent investment as it is sure to grow in value with time. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you would like further details on this beautiful book.
