Homer [Greek; Classics; Fine Press; Fine Bindings]
Glasgow Robert & Andrew Foulis 1756 [-1758] - Four volumes bound in two. The First Edition of the very famous Foulis Press printing of Homer. Folio, [320 x 197 mm], bound in contemporary deluxe straight-grained English/Scottish red morocco, gilt-floral ornamental borders and spines. [iii]-xii, 312; iv, 336; viii, 297; iv, 336 pp. A superb copy, the finest we have ever seen. The morocco bindings in superior condition and the text-blocks well preserved. An absolutely beautiful set. General title not included as is most often the case. A spectacular copy of the quintessential eighteenth-century text of Homer in a fine English/Scottish deluxe binding. The Foulis Edition of Homer has been frequently cited as one of the most accurate and typographically splendid editions of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey in the original Greek. Printed in Wilson's Double Pica Greek type, here in its first use; Gaskell calls the Foulis Homer: "A magnificent achievement, a modern approach to type design." "One of the most splendid specimens of Greek typography extant. Its accuracy is equal to its magnificence" (Lowndes, II, 1097). "The Double Pica Greek type in which it is set was specially cut for it by Alexander Wilson, the University Typefounder; in designing this fount Wilson made the first deliberate break from the tradition of copying Garamond's grec du roi, with all its ligatures and contractions" (Gaskell, Printing the Classics in the Eighteenth Century, p. 106). This beautiful Foulis edition met with the approval of no less an authority than Edward Gibbon: "As the eye is the organ of fancy, I re … [Click Below for Full Description]

AKENSIDE, Mark.
Printed for R. and J. Dodsley. and sold by M. Cooper., London, 1758. First edition in book form. Published against a backdrop of the Seven Years' War, Akenside's address to the country gentlemen of England was intended to rouse them and their tenants to the defence of their country. Deploring the tendency for British interests to be left to mercenary troops in the pay of the British Army ('slavish ruffians hir'd for their command'), Akenside appeals to the historic sensibilities of the gentry of 'heedless Albion.'The poem was also printed in full in the London magazine, or, Gentleman's Monthly Intelligencer, of April 1758 and at least one provincial journal, the Newcastle General Magazine, in the same month. 4to (245 × 188 mm) in half sheets, pp. 11, [1]; ornament to title; minor spotting throughout and traces of an old transverse fold; twentieth-century panelled calf; armorial bookplate of Reginald Baliol Brett, Viscount Esher; a very good copy. Joh. Nicolaus Stoll, Stuttgart. Stuttgart, Joh. Nicolaus Stoll, 1758. 17 x 20. 222 S. OBr. [KNOWLES, Charles]
London: Printed for J. Clarke...A. Millar...and R. and J. Dodsley, 1758. 30pp. With an engraved folding map bound as frontispiece, an engraved folding plate, and an additional engraved plate extracted from an unidentified work depicting a ships waterlines. Early twentieth-century half-calf, marbled boards, contrasting green morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Extremities a trifle rubbed. Single tear to frontispiece, some marginal damp-staining, plates browned, lightly foxed. A personal account by Admiral Charles Knowles (d. 1777) of his conduct during the failed expedition against Rochefort in 1757. Knowles' actions, and those of Lieutenant-General Sir John Mordaunt, provoked considerable criticism. The aim of the British had been to capture the French Atlantic port, a strategic position during the Seven Years' War. Despite early successes for the expeditionary force in reaching the French coast, army commander Sir John Mordaunt refused to advance on the mainland, deeming a landing too hazardous - the fleet subsequently retreated. An inquiry followed, recommending the court-martial of Mordaunt, and the tarnishing of the reputation of Knowles, who here attempts to exonerate himself. The expedition cost approximately one million pounds and it was likened by politician Henry Fox to 'breaking windows with guineas'. ESTC T92816.. First edition. 8vo.

NOVI DE CAVEIRAC, Jean
, 1758. ______ Format : In-8. *-------*.
