He was born in Malaga, Spain, in 1729, of impoverished but nobleparentage. They contrived, however, to him a good education, and he subsequently obtained a post as advocate at the French Embassy, where he came in contact with many influential friends. He was sent to Mexico in 1761, as Inspector General, and three years later was given supreme powers. He did much to help the Indians, and organised the expedition to Monterey, which the Spanish reached in 1770, thus bringing to a successful end the two hundred years' effort of Spain to secure herself in California. Thompson, Thomas
London: Benjamin Dod(1758). London: Benjamin Dod, 1758. First Edition. Octavo. [iv], 87 pp. Bound in marbled paper covers with label. Some browning to title page and last leaf, otherwise a very good and bright copy. "Thompson's account of his proselytizing efforts in the American colonies and along the west coast of Africa on behalf of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. He was the first Anglican missionary to Africa, and two decades later wrote a defence of the slave trade at the behest of the S.P.G., which was active in the trade" (Christies). "Thompson published in 1758 An Account of Two Missionary Voyages, a lively narrative of his experiences. Then, when the abolition campaign began, he seems to have been asked by his former employers to write in their defence. As he had been for five years the employee of a company which was principally concerned with trading in slaves, and had associated in an always perfectly amicable way with their African suppliers and customers, it need be no surprise that he was ready to publish, in 1772, a thirty-one page pamphlet, The African trade for negro slaves shown to be consistent with principles of humanity and with the laws of revealed religion. He drew on the Bible to justify slavery, and also on African practice, remarking that: 'The customs of the blacks are many of them good rules of policy, such as would not disgrace a more regular constitution' (Thompson, The African Trade, 25). His pamphlet elicited a few pages of angry retort from Granville Sharp, beginning: 'For shame, Mr Thompson!' (Sharp, 29), incorporated in his … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Marshall, John.) Gilbert, Sir Geoffrey
London: Printed by Henry Lintot for J. Worral and W. Owen, 1758. SIGNED BY CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN MARSHALL. FIRST EDITION of this law book from the library of John Marshall, signed twice (on the front free endpaper and on the front cover). The most important chief justice in the history of the United States Supreme Court, John Marshall was one of the great figures in the establishment of our judicial, legal, and political system. John Marshall rose quickly from frontier log cabin beginnings (albeit from one of Virginia's leading families) to become one of the most respected statesmen in America. After serving for a year as secretary of state under John Adams, Marshall became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a post he held from 1801 to 1835. Over those 35 years he transformed the Court, established the power of judicial review, and helped define the Constitution for future generations, making the third branch co-equal with the executive and legislative branches. As Story wrote, "Your expositions of constitutional law enjoy a rare and extraordinary authority. They constitute a monument of fame far beyond the ordinary memorials of political and military glory. As a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Marshall chaired a committee in 1787 to amend the act establishing the High Court of Chancery in Virginia. It is likely that Marshall used this very book, Gilbert's Chancery, in preparing to reform the law, … [Click Below for Full Description]

[HELVETIUS (Claude Adrien)]
Paris, Chez Durand, 1758. "No book during the eighteenth century, except perhaps Rousseau's Emile, evoked such an outcry from religious and civil authorities or such universal public interest" (David Smith). (Peignot, 'Livres interdits', I, 177. D. Smith, E.1B, p. 121 : "deuxième tirage"). Contient relié à sa suite: HELVETIUS. "Lettre au Révérend Père *** Jésuite". S.l.n.d. [1759]. 4 p. Effrayé par l'orage qu'il avait soulevé et sous la pression de son environnement, Helvétius publia, en août 1759, cette rétractation partielle de son
