(Marshall, John.) Gilbert, Sir Geoffrey
London: Printed by Henry Lintot for J. Worral and W. Owen, 1758. SIGNED BY CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN MARSHALL. FIRST EDITION of this law book from the library of John Marshall, signed twice (on the front free endpaper and on the front cover). The most important chief justice in the history of the United States Supreme Court, John Marshall was one of the great figures in the establishment of our judicial, legal, and political system. John Marshall rose quickly from frontier log cabin beginnings (albeit from one of Virginia's leading families) to become one of the most respected statesmen in America. After serving for a year as secretary of state under John Adams, Marshall became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a post he held from 1801 to 1835. As a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Marshall chaired a committee in 1787 to amend the act establishing the High Court of Chancery in Virginia. It is likely that Marshall used this very book, Gilbert's Chancery, in preparing to reform the law, … [Click Below for Full Description]

"No book during the eighteenth century, except perhaps Rousseau's Emile, evoked such an outcry from religious and civil authorities or such universal public interest" (David Smith). (Peignot, 'Livres interdits', I, 177. D. Smith, E.1B, p. 121 : "deuxième tirage"). Contient relié à sa suite: HELVETIUS. "Lettre au Révérend Père *** Jésuite". S.l.n.d. [1759]. 4 p. Jacques Ozanam
Ant. Jombert, Paris, 1758. A fascinating 18th century work on surveying and measuring, in French (arpentage being surveying and toise being measuring), authored by the venerable Jacques Ozanam, and including 12 fold-out plates showing examples. This work also includes some of Ozanam's well-respected mathematical tables; these were the equivalent of 18th century calculators. I'm particularly drawn to the plates, which include examples of surveying the heights of mountains and buildings, which crosses several genres (cartology and construction). Also, there is a wonderful plate showing the surveyor's sight glass, which might make it a great gift for a surveyor or someone else employed in the construction trade. The binding is one of the most pronounced examples of "Cat's-paw Calf" that I've ever seen; you can almost picture the cat standing on it. Cat's-paw is one of the more recognizable and celebrated binding styles of the 18th century. Physical Attributes - Measures 17 x 10 x 3.5 cm. Cat's-paw calf. Marbled endpapers.
