FIELDING, Sir John. (Henry Fielding).
London A. Millar in the Strand. To which is added A PLAN for preserving those deserted Girls in this Town, who become Prostitutes from Necessity. Title page lightly browned, final page slightly dusty, otherwise contents clean and bright. A very good copy. Henry Fielding (1707 – 1754) the author of the famous novel Tom Jones was a magistrate and aside from his literary achievements, he has a significant place in the history of law-enforcement, having founded (with his half-brother John) what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners, using his authority as a magistrate. The pamphlet describes their plans for ridding London of violent gangs, for dealing with the problems of beggars and homeless boys and girls, and gaming in public houses. 1758. Eighteen century edition of one of the most comprehensive works on the history of Portugal, which was first published in 1594. This edition of 1758 is much more enlarged and vividly narrates pertinent historical events till the reign of King John V (1689-1750). Edition of utmost importance for the history of Brazil, since it describes the Dutch Wars and the 18th century French incursions in Brazil. Most interesting work details the early history of the Kingdom of Portugal, the life of its monarchs (till 1750), and early exploration around the world. It narrates battles against the moors, first Portuguese exploits in Africa including the famous voyage to the Kingdom of Prestes João (Ethiopia), conquests in the East Indies, Asia and America (including the discovery and early exploration of Brazil). The second volume, begins with a narration of the discovery and conquest of Santa Cruz (Brazil), it also accounts for the Dutch- Portuguese wars in Brazil, the French invasion of Rio de Janeiro (1710), etc. The volume ends with the memories of the most notable events during the reign of King John V of Portugal (1689-1750). Work illustrated with 25 portraits of the kings of Portugal, an important and early iconographic compilation of Portuguese monarchs. 1758. [POMBAL, SEBASTIAO JOSE DE CARVALHO (1699-1782). Breve relazione della republica, che i religiosi Gesuiti delle provincie di Portogallo e di Spagna hanno stabilita ne'domini Oltromarini delle due monarchie e della guerra... Lisbona; Madrid: 1758. Part of a larger smear campaign levelled against the Jesuits in the latter part of the 18th century, this small book is a relation of the "Republic" the Jesuits established in the South American regions of Paraguay and Brazil. In actuality this "Republic" was a series of autonomously governed Jesuit missions (much like Juniperro Serra's missions in California) among the Guarani territory of South America in which each mission included a church, basic housing, a school, farms, and light industry. These highly successful ventures endured for over 150 years, and provided protection for the Guarani people from the ruthless slave-traders of the area, particularly the Portuguese. Pombal, who either wrote or sponsored this work, was the Portuguese Prime Minister and was vehemently anti-Jesuit. After the Jesuits were expelled from the territory, under pressure from both the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns, the European powers moved in to destroy these "Reductiones". The Guarani's led a brief armed resistance (the Guarani War, 1756), but ultimately were defeated and forced to flee back into the rainforest. This book appears to mention the war in the title, and is published only a year following it. This work was first published in Portuguese in 1757 in Lisbon. 8vo (17 x 11cm), 48p., 16p., 38p. Bound in wrappers with some wear and chips. … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCOTTISH BINDING.)
Edinburgh: by Alexander Kincaid, 1758. Edinburgh: by Alexander Kincaid,, 1758. Bound in 2 volumes, duodecimo (135 x 72 mm). Contemporary Scottish binding of brown goatskin, covers tooled in gilt with a herringbone pattern panel within a frame with flower-head tools at corners, enclosed by a border with fleurons, flowers, and dots; gilt panel spines, unlettered, with dotted-rule saltires, flower-heads and fleurons; "Dutch gilt" endpapers, gilt edges. Inscriptions dated January 1858 and hand-coloured Edinburgh-engraved bookplates on each free endpaper of John F. Patrick. The leather on vol. 2 darker from use, a few gatherings at the end of that volume (the Psalter) sprung, the title page of the Psalter with some loss at centre not affecting text, overall very good. A pleasing and fairly typical example of the distinctively Scottish herringbone binding style. The style was established by 1725 and was in decline by the late 1770s. The herringbone consists of a vertical stem placed in the centre of the cover with "ribs" of paired tools placed symmetrically on either side. A variety of tools were used to adorn the space between the centre and the borders. It was customary to bind Bibles in two volumes, as here, with the metrical psalms being added to the second volume. As the psalms were used in the church services, this volume is normally found in a poorer condition than the first volume. It was usual for the endleaves of these books to be of "Dutch gilt" paper. These highly patterned and coloured papers came principally from France, Germany and Italy and were so-called becaus … [Click Below for Full Description]

The extremely rare seminal tenth edition of Linnaeus' main work (here bound together with the 3rd part, published 10 years later), being the most important edition of this foundational work, as "[i]t is in this edition that Linnaeus carried out the definitive plan of binominal nomenclature, with diagnosis and synonyms, for the fist time, including the generic and the trivial names, which together form the specific name of each animal. This edition has therefore been accepted as "the basis of zoological nomenclature". (Sandberg no. 12). Justi, Johann Heinrich Gottlob von.
Leipzig, Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf, 1758. 8vo. 2 vols. bound in one. XLVIII, 606, final blank. (2), 744, (52) pp. With 5 folding tables. Contemporary unsophisticated boards. Second, much enlarged edition of Justi's most important economic book, first published in 1755. Justi (1717-71) came up with a broad range of ideas for economic reform: apart from measures supporting population growth and fostering competition (by reducing the power of guilds and corporations), he viewed the increase in private consumption (by abolishing sumptuary laws), the spread of manufactures and companies as well as the growth in external trade (with the help of government-sponsored trade companies and the abolition of prohibitions regarding the import and export of goods) as cornerstones for economic success. These measures were to be accompanied by improvements in mining and agriculture. In his financial writings, the influence of contemporary French authors as well as cameralistic theories developed by Wolff and Pufendorf are evident. - Title stained and with a small repair. Occasional mild foxing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CRONSTEDT, AXEL FREDERIK). - THE FOUNDATION OF MINERALOGY.
Stockholm, Wildiska Tryckeriet, 1758. 8vo. Fine contemporary hcalf. 4 raised bands. Titlelabel with gilt lettering. (40),251,(1) pp. Clean and fine. On front free endpaper the name of ancontemporary owner "J. von Höpken d: 4. Junii 1765". Anders Johan von Höpken (1712-89) was a Swedish statesman and the leading figure in establishing the Hat-party's anti-Muscovite system. First edition of this landmark work in Mineralogy which set up a new rational system for classifying minerals. Cronstedt's system of classification - published the same year as Linné's famous tenth edition of Systema Naturae - stands as an important landmark in the history of Mineralogy. The system was to a large extent based on the results of chemical tests performed with the blowpipe, and his emphasis on these "internal" characteristics makes him one of the founders of mineral analysis; Bartow has suggested that he might be called "the father of analytical chemistry". By systematically using the blow-pipe analysis, Cronstedt divided the minerals into four groups: earths, salts, bitumen and metals. In 1751 he discovered Nickel."One of his greatest contributions to science was the treatise in which he reformed mineralogy and classified minerals not merely according to their ewxternal properties, such as form, hardness, and color, but also according to their chemical composition. (Weeks, p. 165). "here for the first time, he established the current distinction between simple minerals and rock minerals consisting of a mixture of several minerals" (DSB).Poggendorff I,499. - Neville, 309 (only the second ed.). … [Click Below for Full Description]

HELVÉTIUS, CLAUDE ADRIEN). - [A PUBLICALLY BURNT MAIN WORK OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT]
Paris, Chez Durand, 1758. 4to. Very nice cont. full mottled calf w. five raised bands on richly gilt back. All edges of boards gilt. Top-layer of leather on back-board gone. Upper hinges a bit weak, top-capital worn. Internally very nice and clean. W. the large armorial bookplate of Lord Viscount Lymington. W. half-title. Large woodcut title-vignette and many smaller vignettes throughout. (4), XII, 643, (1, Approbation + Privilege) pp. First edition, second issue of the monumental work of French Enlightenment. Helvetius' main work, because of which he is remembered today. The work caused an immense uproar, when it appeared. It was considered heretical, atheistic, immoral etc. and lost its privilege within a few weeks; it was heavily condemned by the Church and the State and was burnt by the Hangman, the plan being to destroy all copies of it. Rarely had a book been met with such opposition, condemned by both the son of Louis XV and the Sorbonne, and the priests succeeded in convincing the court that the doctrines presented in this work could hardly be more dangerous, so even though Helvetius wrote three retractions, the book was still publically burned. Probably due to the noisy condemnation of the work, it was almost immediately translated into all European languages, making it quite influential. The likes of Bentham and Mill were influenced by the early utilitarian thoughts presented in the work, but apparently France was not ready for these new thoughts. When the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert was suppressed for the second time, this had much to do with De l'Espr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lausanne: Marci-Mic. Bousquet & Soc, 1758. Tissot, Samuel Auguste André David (1728-97). Dissertatio de febribus biliosis; seu histori epidemiae biliosae . . . accredit tentamen de morbis ex manusturpratione. 8vo. xiv, 264pp. Lausanne: Marc-Michel Bousquet & Soc., 1758. 204 x 127 mm. 19th-century quarter morocco, marbled boards, vellum corners, light edgewear, 2 worn areas on spine, marbled paper a bit bubbled. Very good copy. First Edition of Tissot's notorious treatise on the dangers of masturbation, which forms the second part of the Dissertatio. According to Tissot, masturbation was responsible for a wide range of physical and psychological maladies including insanity, epilepsy, blindness, memory loss, impotence, vertigo and nymphomania; chronic masturbators could be distinguished by their "moist and clammy hands, stooped shoulders, pale sallow face with heavy, dark circles around the eyes, a 'draggy' gait, and acne" (Engelhardt, p. 6). Tissot's book played an important role in shaping the medical and social perception of masturbation as a debilitating illness, a view that persisted into the 20th century. A separate edition in French, considerably augmented by the author, was published in 1760 under the title L'Onanisme; ou dissertation physique, sur les maladies produites par la masturbation, and the work went through numerous later editions and translations, including one in English published as Onanism; or a Treatise upon the Disorders Produced by Masturbation (1766).
