Arithmetika Horvatszka, koju Za Obchinszku vszega Orszaga haszen, y potrebochu z-vnogemi izebranemi Példami obilnò iztolnachil, y na szvetlo dál je: Mihaly Sillobod, drugàch Bolssich

8 p.l., 384, [36] pp. Thickish 8vo, cont. Croatian (?) binding of calf over boards (three corners & head of spine a little worn, occasional minor foxing), covers ruled in blind. Zagreb: A. Reiner, 1758. First edition of the first Croatian book on arithmetic. This is an extremely rare book with no copy in OCLC. In 2008 a reprint with a new introduction was issued on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the publication of this work. At the same time, a Croatian postage stamp was issued to commemorate the anniversary. "Public education in Croatian regions under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy had not yet been organized even in the first half of the 18th century... "The growing needs in trade and economy forced the teachers of that time to pay more attention to doing sums and calculations. At that time, however, the only handbooks for mathematical operations existed only in foreign languages while it was necessary to teach the population in the Croatian language. This is why Mijo Šilobod Bolšic wrote his first arithmetic in the Croatian language, more specifically in the Kaikavian dialect, published in the year 1758 in Zagreb, entitled "Arithmetika Horvatszka"... "Mijo Šilobod Bolšic was born in the year 1725 in the village Sveti Martin pod Okicem. He attended the gymnasium in Zagreb, studied philosophy in Vienna and continued his studies of theology in Bologna. He served as parish priest in various parishes in the Kaikavian regions of Croatia. Šilobod wrote several works of different contents in the Croatian and Latin languages but had become best known for his very extensive book on arithmetic... "In writing his arithmetic handbook Šilobod used some foreign arithmetic books, among them the well known handbook of arithmetic written by the Italian author Giuseppe Maria Figatelli. Šilobod's handbook is divided into four parts: the first part contains the four mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; the second part describes all operations with fractions, the third part contains the simple and complex rule of three, and the fourth part contains practical trading accounts, debts, profits, losses, mix calculus and many others. In this fourth chapter there are also some more complex explanations, probably intended for pupils who have already sufficiently mastered the first three parts of the book. At the end of the book, on thirty-six un-paginated pages, we find displayed various practical tables. This entirely defines the task and purpose of this work, i.e. the knowledge of the basic accounts and all the accounts that appear in practical life, particularly in trade... "Since the handbook was written in the Croatian language, this is where the Croatian arithmetical terminology appears for the first time. Šilobod had obviously used terms that were already recorded in dictionaries; however, this was entirely insufficient because his needs were much greater. On the other hand, the more complex mathematical terms could not be easily found in dictionaries and they were not used by the wide population. "This is the reason that Šilobod found out he was facing a huge problem: it would be the first time to record the existing mathematical terminology in a published book, naturally, in the Kaikavian region for which he had written his handbook. He would then have had to adapt the terminology that had already been present in dictionaries, particularly in the dictionary of J. Belloszténëcz. Afterwards he himself would have had to coin the terms he needed, using the already existing roots of specific words of related meaning in the Kaikavian dialect of the Croatian language. He had obviously coined some names by translating Latin terms that he then adjusted to the Kaikavian expression... "Šilobod's arithmetic has great significance in the Croatian culture, particularly because this is the first arithmetic in the Croatian language: it was the first appearance of the systematically used Croatian mathematical terminology. Besides, the handbook had an important role in the education of the Croatian people at the time when great need occurred for the enhancement of the knowledge of accounting in trade and economy."-Žarko Dadic, http://www.croatia.org/crown/articles/9506/1/Arithmetika-Horvatszka-from-1758-the-oldest-Croatian-arithmetic.html. A very good copy of a very unusual imprint. .

Le droit des gens ou principes de la loi naturelle appliques a la conduite et aux affaires des nations & des souverains. A Leide: aux depens de la Compagnie, 1758.

      - Early edition of the classic text on international law, published in the same year as the first 'London' [i.e. Neuchatel] edition, and nine years before Vattel's death in 1767. This work was much read in the American colonies, and greatly influenced the thinking of the framers of the American constitution. 'No writer on the law of nations before Vattel had so consistently - and persistently - emphasized freedom, independence, and interdependence as the condition of states in their relations with one another. The authors of the American Declaration would soon adopt his repeated insistence that states were "free and independent" as the conception of their own states' condition. By doing so, they enacted Vattel's central contention that - in the words of his contemporary English translator - "independence is ever necessary to each state"; to secure that independence "it is sufficient that nations conform to what is required of them by the natural and general society, established among all mankind." In due course, this would become the standard modern definition in international law of independence as "the capacity to enter into relations with other states." In 1775 Benjamin Franklin sought out the latest edition of Vattel's work for the benefit of Congress" (David Armitage, The Declaration of Independence: A Global History, Harvard, 2007, pp. 40-41).         Civan, Roi de Bungo, Histoire Japonnaise , ou Tableau de l'Education d'un Prince

Londres: Jean Nourse, 1758. Two volumes, small octavo; a neat set in contemporary calf, flat spines gilt in compartments, slight rubbing. Educational use of an imaginary voyage setting. Second edition, following a 1754 version by the same publisher. Both works are of some rarity, NUC listing a single copy of the first and only two copies of this edition. The book is a roman d'éducation about an imagined kingdom of famed serenity and good government, written for Joseph II. Madame le Prince de Beaumont (1711-1780) was a prolific writer whose work was principally known for a 'cachet religieux, moral et sensé' (NBG). Civan is dedicated to Prince Joseph (later Joseph II, first emperor of the House of Hapsburg-Lorraine) best known for an ill-fated series of reforms which attempted to improve the conditions of the peasantry. As the introduction explains, the tale of the Roi de Bungo was intended to offer the young Princes 'un Modèle digne de leur émulation'. Moreover, Beaumont saw in the example of Civan what she contended would provide 'ces Guides qu'il eut besoin de chercher chez des Estrangers'. The work's rarity is confirmed by the entry in the NBG: clearly not having the work to hand, they refer to it as 'Cida, Roi de Burgo'. It has recently been released in a scholarly reprint, edited by Alix Deguise.

Internally fine and clean, printed on thick paper. Collation: F 1 Half-title in German and French (on verso Nachricht an der Buchbinder) followed by the engraved plate of Frederic V surrounded by allegorical representations of navigation and marine products. This plate is printed in sanguine, an indication of the copy being one of the ROYAL PRESENTATION COPIES (in other copies it is printed in blue). F 2 German title-page. F 3 French Title-page. F 4-5 Dedication to the King in German. F 6-7 Dedication in French. F 8 Vorbericht/ Advertissement by Regenfuss dated 31st March 1758 (the King's birthday). Pp. A German imperial privilege-leaf is not supposed to be in the the Royal presentation copies, and is consequently not here. According to C.C.A. Gosch (part 3, p. 152) a leaf with the imprint "Lectori benevolo Naturae Speculatori Atque Ingenuarum Artium Studioso S.P." is found in some copies where the engraved dedication leaf to the king lacks (the engraved dedikation is present here). The 2 large engraved vignettes is also printed in sanguine, indicating royal presentation copy. With all the 12 exquisite handcoloured engraved plates each with many figures, often showing the shells in front and back view. Each shell is provided with a shadow on its right side, the flat species with a narrow edge of shadow, the more convex ones with a considerable amount of shadow, making the figures stand out THREE-DIMENSIONALLY.. Extremely scarce - really the second issue of this, the tallest and most sumptuous of all conchological works, as the work was prepared for publication early in 1758 with the text by the Danish phycisist C.G. Kratzenstein. Just as the book was due to come from the press, the King supressed the text, and took the few copies back wich had already been distributed (probably only 25 and only very few of these have survived in public libraries). The text for the definite edition (the item offered) was rewritten by L. Spengler, J.A. Cramer and P. Ascanius, using Kratzensteins new generic names and after being approved by the King it was published in 1759. The magnificent plates are all handcoloured by Gabr. Müller and Joh. Maurits Leyh, but mostly by Regenfuss' wife Margaretha Helena Regenfuss. The second volume was prepared, but Regenfuss did not finish the 12 plates until 1777. These plates were brought in circulation in advance of the relevant text and the plates are found in various libraries, all without a text, which was prepared by O.F. Müller, but never printed. For the very complicated printing history of the works see: C.C.A. Gosch "Udsigt over Danmarks Zoologiske Litteratur", vol. 2, part I, pp. 292 ff. and vol. 3, pp. 151-153. - Birkelund "Dansk Boghaandværk gennem Tiderne 1482-1948", pp. 77-81. - W.S.S.van Benthem Jutting "On the Conchological work of F.M.         L'Architettura di M. Vitruvio Pollione colla Traduzione Italiana e Comento del Marchese Berardo Galiani

Naples: Stamperia Simoniana, 1758. Folio, with engraved frontispiece and 25 plates, woodcut diagrams and vignettes throughout; light browning of a few gatherings, some plates thumbed at margins, but a handsome copy in contemporary vellum. Large format Vitruvius. Splendid edition of Vitruvius, published in large format with 25 detailed plates specially prepared for this edition. This is the best textual edition of Vitruvius, translated and edited by Berardo Galiani, the humanist scholar who reinterpreted the classical architectural canon for eighteenth-century sensibilities. A second edition of this version appeared later the same year in Siena. The Latin text has a facing Italian translation, with the Italian commentary printed below. Vitruvius is the only classical architectural treatise to have survived into the modern era. All printed editions derive from four manuscript copies of which just three are now extant (the manuscript held by the Abbey of Montecassino was destroyed during the Second World War). Some textual differences exist between the known manuscripts; here Galiani's edition is remarkable for his careful collation and translation in order to provide the most accurate text possible. Furthermore, he was the first to produce a bibliography of previous printed editions of Vitruvius, with each entry accompanied by an informative commentary. Vitruvius, while eminently practical in many respects, was deeply concerned with the ritual and mystical magic associated with construction, building and the Roman home itself. The siting of structures was of great importance within the Roman metaphysical canon, additionally his work contains much detail on auguries associated with building, relationships between good fortune and architectural design, and similar themes. The magical and metaphysical aspects of the treatise held great influence on the Renaissance imagination, and the book came to be venerated far beyond its actual intellectual content.

The book of nature; or, the history of insects

London: Seyffert, 1758. <p>Swammerdam, Jan (1637-80). The book of nature; or, the history of insects. . . . With the life of the author, by Herman Boerhaave. Translated from the Dutch and Latin original edition, by Thomas Flloyd. Revised and improved by notes from Reaumur and others by John Hill, M.D. 2 parts in 1, folio. [6], xx, [6], 236; 153, lxiii, [12]pp. 53 engraved plates, a few by Swammerdam. London: C. G. Seyffert, 1758. 440 x 274 mm. (uncut). Quarter calf, marbled boards in period style. Edges a bit frayed, light toning, but very good.</p><p>First Edition in English. See Dibner 191. Despite a scientific career that lasted only a dozen years, Swammerdam was one of the outstanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. His most remarkable work was in the field of insect anatomy, which he undertook in order to disprove Aristotle&#146;s claims that insects lack internal anatomy, develop by metamorphosis (sudden and complete transformation) and arise from spontaneous generation. By refining his techniques of microdissection and injection to the point where he could use them on the smallest and most delicate anatomical parts, Swammerdam was able to illustrate for the first time the complex internal structures of insects, including their reproductive organs; and to demonstrate the gradual development of an insect&#146;s adult form throughout all its larval stages. These observations are &#147;indubitably the foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects&#148; (Cole, p. 285). In addition, Swammerdam performed valuable investigations of crustaceans, mollusks and frogs, and was the first to prove experimentally that muscles do not increase in bulk when contracted via nerve stimulation. The Biblia natura, Swammerdam&#146;s major work, was published fifty-seven years after his death by Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738), who assembled it from unpublished manuscript materials integrated with a slightly revised version of Swammerdam&#146;s Historia insectorum generalis (1669). Boerhaave&#146;s biography of the author, which prefaces the work, remains the chief published source of information about Swammerdam&#146;s life. The English translation of Biblia natura was prepared by the physician John Hill (1716?-75), author of several botanical treatises (including the monumental Vegetable System [1759-75]) and a host of miscellaneous works.         Civan, Roi de Bungo, Histoire Japonnaise , ou Tableau de l'Education d'un Prince

Jean Nourse, Londres 1758 - Two volumes, small octavo; a neat set in contemporary calf, flat spines gilt in compartments, slight rubbing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Polling.

. [The Election]. Plate No. III. Published 20 Feb. 1758. 40x54 cm. 3th state of 3. Very sharp copy on strong paper. * This eighteenth-century print shows a polling booth on Election Day. The two candidates sit on chairs at the back of the polling booth, one scratching his head while the other looks over the crowd. One of the men in the booth has drawn a caricature of the candidate closest to him. The pleased expression on the candidate's face suggests that he is winning. Another man in the booth has fallen asleep.<br><br>The first voter is an old soldier who has lost both arms and a leg. Therefore, the soldier takes the oath with his hook. The clerk finds this act amusing, but the nearby lawyers argue whether the oath is valid if an actual hand has not been used. Near the old soldier is a simpleton, who is being coached by a man wearing restraints on his legs. Behind him are a dying man, a blind man, and a man with crutches. The implication is that candidates who need votes will bring anyone in to vote.<br><br>In the background is a coach that is about to overturn because the coachman and footman are playing cards. Brittania, the passenger, cannot get their attention to prevent ruin. Hogarth's print serves as a warning to Great Britain that bribery and election stunts are distracting the nation from its important duties. (Colonial Williamsburg)..

Gilt title to spine, and signed in gilt.. The extremely rare seminal tenth edition of Linnaeus' main work, being the most important edition of this foundational work, as "[i]t is in this edition that Linnaeus carried out the definitive plan of binominal nomenclature, with diagnosis and synonyms, for the fist time, including the generic and the trivial names, which together form the specific name of each animal. This edition has therefore been accepted as "the basis of zoological nomenclature". (Sandberg no. 12). "Systema Natura" is considered the bible of natural history, and with the definitive tenth edition of it, it founded modern zooloical nomenclature and changed the science more profoundly than any other work before or after. "During his lifetime, Linnaeus exerted an influence in his field - botany and natural history - that had had few parallels in the history of science. Driven by indomitable ambition and aided by an incredible capacity for work, he accomplished the tremendous task that he had set for himself in his youth: the establishment of new systems for the three kingdoms of nature to facilitate the description of all known animals, plants, and minerals." (D.S.B. VIII:374)."He compiled this work, consisting only of seven folio leaves, as a first outline of what in its further development became the foundation of botanical and zoological classification systems. Linné was first and foemost a systematist, subordinating all botanical problems to that of classification. He established the principles of class, order, genus and species for all plants and animals... The tenth edition of the Systema Naturae, 1758, is his final version of the system by which many plants and animals are still named to this day with references "Linnaeus", "Linn." or "L." attached." (Printing and the Mind of Man, p. 114)."In this edition, the binomial system previously emplyed by Linnaeus in the work entitled "Museum Tessinianum" (1753) was extended in its application to all the kingdoms of nature; the Artedian classification of fishes, adopted in the earlier editions, was superseded by the familiar Linnaean system, and the cetaceans were for the first time eliminated from the class of fishes and grouped with the viviparous quadrupeds under the new class name Mammalia." (Soulsby)."TENTH, AND DEFINITIVE, EDITION; a scarce and highly important printing, which standardized zoological taxonomy and nomenclature and utilized binomial nomenclature (generic coupled with a specific epithet) throughout. In this edition, Linnaeus became the first naturalist to recognize whales as mammals." (Freilich-sale, no. 358).Sandberg 12; Norman 1:1359; Soulsby 58; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 4794; Hulth p.6

Practicae novae imperialis Saxonicae rerum criminalium pars prima (...tertia). nec non variis observationibus aucta a Joanne Samuele Friderico BÖHMERO.

Frankfurt am Main, Apud Franciscum Varrentrapp, 1758.. Editio novissima. Groß-Folio.

London: Printed by S. Richardson: and sold by A. Millar [et al], 1758.. London: Printed by S. Richardson: and sold by A. Millar [et al], 1758.. [18],xli,[1],505,[11]pp. Large, thick quarto. Contemporary calf, spine gilt extra, gilt label. Joints cracked but cords sound, edgewear, early ink name in corner of title, scattered foxing early and late, but a good, sound copy. First edition of this important translation by the Bluestocking poet and linguistic polymath, undertaken at the urging of her friend, Catherine Talbot. It was "published by subscription by Andrew Millar, John Rivington, and Robert and James Dodsley in a handsome quarto volume, priced at 1 guinea. It was prefaced by an ode to Carter by Hester Mulso Chapone, and was the first of Carter&#39;s works in which her name appeared on the title- page. Although 1018 copies were printed by Samuel Richardson, this was not sufficient for her subscribers and another 250 copies were printed. A Dublin edition appeared in the following year and there were further London editions in 1766 and 1768 ... Selections were included in various works and the text was the basis of several popular editions in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries ...The significance of Carter&#39;s achievement should not be underestimated. While several translations of the Enchiridion or Manual existed, and, as she acknowledged, she benefited from a French translation of the works and John Upton&#39;s parallel Latin/Greek text (1739), Carter was the first to translate the complete works of Epictetus into English. Oldfather considered it &#145;a very respectable performance under any conditions, but for her sex and period truly remarkable&#39;" - DNB. The long list of subscribers includes a number of distinguished names, among them her friend Samuel Johnson, and the success of the work considerably broadened her circle of influence and friendship.
