Genealogical documents for the Duran and Torres families. Manuscripts on paper, in Spanish.

, , @Circa 1638-1758. - Written in ink, in tidy chancery hands of the seventeenth century, with a different hand (also early) for the title on the first leaf. The first leaf of the first section of the manuscript is on papel sellado with a 68-maravedi stamp bearing the date 1638. The second manuscript is written throughout on papel sellado with a 10-maravedi stamp, also bearing the date 1638. Laid into the second work, after the fourth leaf, is an engraving (28.4 x 19.5 cm.) bearing an elaborate coat of arms (see below). (1 l. with title, 1 blank l.), (26 ll. on Duran family), (26 ll. on Torres family), (2 blank ll.), engraved coat of arms of the Torres family laid in. Folio (32 x 22.5 cm.), two manuscripts stitched together, with a nearly contemporary wrapper formed by 2 leaves. Uncut. A few stains on the upper wrapper; minor darkening at edges. Overall very good. Contemporary signatures of witnesses, etc. on final leaf of each document. Octavo-size leaf laid in with table of contents, dated 9 September 1758. ---- Genealogical documentation of the Duran family from Extremadura and the Torres family from Navarre. The title on the upper wrapper reads, "Ihs. Mª Joseph [Jesus Maria Joseph]. // Testimonios // e unas informaciones e outros instrumentos // de nobleça de la familia y linaxe de // los Duranes de la Burra [?]". Each document begins with "Francisco de Nogales en nombre del lisensiado Juan Duran de Torres abogado de la Real Audiencia ."Names mentioned in the text include Francisco Duran de Torres, father of Juan Duran de Torres, and Fuente de Cantos and Mérida (Extremadura). The engraving laid into the second work is a dark, clear impression of a plate probably executed in the eighteenth century. It includes the arms of Navarre, a double-headed eagle, two lions rampant, a crown, the motto "Nomen sempiternum dabo eis / quod non peribit, Esaie 56" ("I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off, Isaiah 56.5"). In the cartouche are the words, "Insignia Sive Stemmata Genearchae Palatij Familiaeque de Torres ex Regia Stirpo & Prosapia Navarrense Oriundi" ("Insignia or pedigree of the Torres palace [?] and family, of royal stock and Navarran ancestry"). ----

FRENCH AND INDIAN CRUELTY; EXEMPLIFIED IN THE LIFE AND VARIOUS VICISSITUDES OF FORTUNE, OF PETER WILLIAMSON, A DISBANDED SOLDIER. CONTAINING A PARTICULAR ACCOUNT OF THE MANNERS, CUSTOMS AND DRESS OF THE SAVAGES...A SUMMARY OF THE TRANSACTIONS OF THE SEVERAL PROVINCES OF PENNSYLVANIA (INCLUDING PHILADELPHIA), NEW YORK, NEW ENGLAND...FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE WAR IN THOSE PARTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE RELATIVE TO THE INTENDED ATTACK ON CROWN POINT AND NIAGARA, AND AN ACCURATE AND SUCCINCT DETAIL OF THE SIEGE OF OSWEGO

Glasgow. 1758.. iv,112pp. Early half calf and marbled boards, black gilt morocco label. Boards rubbed, worn at spine ends. Bookplate on front pastedown, lengthy annotations on front free endpaper. Internally clean. Very good. In a chemise and half blue morocco slipcase. The self-styled "third edition, with considerable improvements," issued the year after the superlatively rare first, of what Vail calls "the most popular of all Indian captivities." Peter Williamson was born in Scotland, but was kidnapped and sold into bondage in Pennsylvania when he was eight years old. His master proved kind and ultimately his benefactor, leaving Williamson enough money to marry and establish himself on a farm near the forks of the Delaware. In 1754 he was captured by Indians, probably Delaware, held captive for three months, and submitted to various tortures and humiliations. Escaping in January 1755, he joined the army and was first sent to Boston, then with the expedition to defend Oswego. When Oswego was captured by the French, he was wounded and taken prisoner. Ultimately he was paroled and sent to England, arriving in November 1756. Williamson's narrative is vivid and detailed, deserving of the interest and editions it evoked. It served as a model for many later narratives, and numerous fictional treatments stole details from it. One of the earliest obtainable editions, the first existing in only a few copies. VAIL 526A.

Londres: Louis Pierre Mortier, à la Belle Image, 1758 - Première édition, 2 volumes in-12; T.I: [ii], xcii, 163p.; T.II: [ii], 316p.

        Tab XCV (95), Tomus III

Amsterdam 1758 - Albert Seba (1665-1736). Copperplate engraving with original hand color from Locupletissimi Rerum Naturalium Thesauri, Tomus III. Published in Amsterdam by Waesberg, 1758. Paper size: 19 1/2"x24 3/4" Condition: Very Good. Albert Seba’s magnificent “Thesauri” is a catalogue of his personal natural history collection, an immense conglomeration of specimens of a number of exotic plant and animal life. The son of a Frisian peasant who became rich in the service of the Dutch East India Company, Seba was an apothecary practicing in Amsterdam when he began to collect. His scientific interests and curiosity motivated him to amass this collection on a series of travels to the East and West Indies, and from purchases he made of specimens collected by travelers the world over. Many of the snakes, plants, fish and shells illustrated and described in his “Thesauri” were based on the specimens Seba collected in this “cabinet of curiosities.” In fact, many of the extravagant designs of the engravings were copies of the arrangements of the specimens in the drawers of his cabinet and the walls upon which he hung his collection, which in this way became a sort of predecessor of the modern museum. The collection was a valuable source to European natural historians, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to travel to the far flung destinations where the specimens originated. It is documented, for example, that Carolus Linneas visited the collection when he was in Amsterdam. These fine engravings made Seba’s unparalleled collection accessible to a much wider spectrum of enthusiasts, and modern viewers, too, can appreciate the stylized compositions and near-abstract quality of their fanciful compositions.

A General Map of the Middle British Colonies in America . Corrected and Improved with the Addition of the Line of Forts on the Back Settlemetns .

Sold by R. Sayer . & T. Jefferys ., London 1758 - One of the most important maps of the British colonies done prior to Independence. Lewis Evans' map, titled "A General Map of the Middle British Colonies in America," shows the east coast of North America from Montreal and New England to the northern border of North Carolina, and also includes the Ohio valley in the west. The Evans map appeared in 1755, the same year as John Mitchell's famous map, with Evans drawing from his own original surveys, as well as Fry and Jefferson's 1753 map of Virginia. Evans's map acknowledges French claims to all lands northwest of St. Lawrence Fort, resulting in criticism from New York. Despite the controversy, Evans's work was influential (there were eighteen editions and piracies issued between 1755 and 1814), and was famously used by General Braddock during the French and Indian War. "By 1758 Kitchin's plate seems to have passed into the possession of Thomas Jefferys, the famous map publisher of Charing Cross, for in that year we find the map re-issued with exactly the same title as Kitchin's but with an alteration in the imprint . Very little difference is to be observed between the issues of 1756 and 1758, but a number of new Forts on the back settlements are added in the latter . Fort du Quesne, which was marked simply F. du Quesne' in the 1756 plate, is now lettered 'Ft. du Quesne Destroy'd 1758 now called Pittsburg'" (Stevens). This correction to this issue makes this map the earliest map to name Pittsburgh. A rare issue of a desirable map of colonial America. Stevens and Tree 30b; Klinefelter, "Lewis Evans and his Maps" in Transactions of the American Philosophical Society , vol. 61, no. 7 (1971), p. 54; Stevens, Lewis Evans and His Map (London: 1905) III; McCorkle 758.3; Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring. Inset map of the Ohio River, tables of distance, numerous printed notes relating to Indian tribes and geography.

        De l'esprit

Paris: Chez Durand, 1758. First edition, second issue. 4to (9-3/4 x 7-1/4 inches). [4], xxii, 643, [1] pp. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with red leather label, marbled endpapers and edges. Upper joint starting but solid, half-title with small stain at outer edge, overall a fresh, crisp copy. Smith E.1B . First edition of the last major work of the French philosopher and encyclopédiste, Helvetius, DE L'ESPRIT (On the Mind) was condemned by the Church and the Sorbonne for its uncompromising atheism, regarded as dangerously revolutionary by the Court of Louis XV, and publicly condemned by Parliament. A follower of Locke's empiricism, Helvetius's work was an important development in the history of utilitarian thought, and both Bentham and Mill were strongly influenced by Helvetius' elaboration of a theory which saw mankind as the product of his environment and his education. The first issue of the first edition is very rare: Smith locates only 15 copies. Although the second issue of the 1758 quarto is not as rare as the first, it should be noted that only one copy of the First edition has appeared at auction (in ABPC) since 1975, and that copy was the first issue; no copies of the second issue have appeared for 30 years

Italy 1758 - On offer is a super 1750s handwritten Italian manuscript book of militaria which appears to have been an officer in training's vade mecum notebook or journal as evidenced by an extensive three page 'Tavola' [Table] of Contents with chapters on military protocol, etiquette, theory, tactics and practice +++. This 250+ year old manuscript is bound in simple, though charming, beige colored thick card stock with a fold over flap and a very interesting binding on the spine. Both covers are blank with no writing, titles or designs with the exception of the letter "T" handwritten on the back cover. The text paper is of premium quality with a partial watermark discernible. As to authorship and ownership the only clues are on the last pages wherein our author made some personal notes including references to "Capitan Tenente [Lieutenant Captain], 10 Giugno 1758 and with a name "Nicolo Enzzo Savio[?]." Researchers with a facility for Italian will most assuredly be able to fill in the blanks. The book has one page preface, three page 'Tavola' of contents and then 158 pages of writing + 11 blank pages for a total of 175 pages. [The author hand numbered and miss-numbered the pages twice at pages 68 (for one extra page) and page 105 (for two extra pages) but stopped numbering at page 158.] There are also a number of stubs of paper having been cut or torn out but no evidence of any writing or ink anywhere on the stubs. The last page of text does seem to conclude this manuscript. 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" soft cover. Overall VG. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

(BRUNET, II, 747 - GRAESSE, III, 106 - KRESS LIBRARY, 5695).         FRENCH AND INDIAN CRUELTY; EXEMPLIFIED IN THE LIFE AND VARIOUS VICISSITUDES OF FORTUNE, OF PETER WILLIAMSON, A DISBANDED SOLDIER. CONTAINING A PARTICULAR ACCOUNT OF THE MANNERS, CUSTOMS AND DRESS OF THE SAVAGES.A SUMMARY OF THE TRANSACTIONS OF THE SEVERAL PROVINCES OF PENNSYLVANIA (INCLUDING PHILADELPHIA), NEW YORK, NEW ENGLAND.FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE WAR IN THOSE PARTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE RELATIVE TO THE INTENDED ATTACK ON CROWN POINT AND NIAGARA, AND AN ACCURATE AND SUCCINCT DETAIL OF THE SIEGE OF OSWEGO.

York. . 1758 - [2],104pp. Later three-quarter calf and marbled boards, expertly rebacked, spine gilt. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Some mild foxing, but generally internally quite clean. Very good. Lacks the half title. "The second edition, with corrections and amendments," issued the year after the superlatively rare first edition, of what Vail calls "the most popular of all Indian captivities." Peter Williamson was born in Scotland, but was kidnapped and sold into bondage in Pennsylvania when he was eight years old. His master proved kind and ultimately became his benefactor, leaving Williamson enough money to marry and establish himself on a farm near the forks of the Delaware. In 1754 he was captured by Indians, probably Delawares, held captive for three months, and submitted to various tortures and humiliations. Escaping in January 1755, he joined the army and was sent first to Boston, then with the expedition to defend Oswego. When Oswego was captured by the French, he was wounded and taken prisoner. Ultimately, he was paroled and sent to England, arriving in November 1756. Williamson's narrative is vivid and detailed, deserving of the interest and editions it evoked. It served as a model for many later narratives, and numerous fictional treatments stole details from it. This is the earliest obtainable edition, the first existing in only a few copies. VAIL 526. In 1692, nothing having been done, Newton decided to suppress the letters. In 1754 they were first printed, from the copies in Locke's hand discovered in a library in Holland, as Two letters of Sir Isaac Newton to Mr. Le Clerc, in Holland.         Veduta del Tempio della Fortuna Virile

Rome 1758 - Hind 46 First State.John Wilton-Ely 162From the important series \"Veduta de Roma\"\"Temple of Virile Fortune is now thought to be the Temple of Portunus\" (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and \"like Callot makes great use of the swelling line\" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi\'s own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etchings. San Fran

Atlas Universel

chez les auteurs & Boudet, Paris 1758 - Bound to style in 19th-century calf, the covers elaborately panelled in blind, the large central panel with a diamond-shaped lattice in blind, spine in eight compartments, titled in blind in the second, the others with repeat decoration in blind, marbled endpapers A fine copy of the Robert de Vaugondy's great atlas Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy were descendents of Nicolas Sanson, and their atlas is clearly a continuation of Sanson's great work, Cartes Generales de Toutes les Parties de Monde published in 1654 and later enhanced and enlarged by Hubert Jaillot. Of the 108 maps, 12 are of the ancient world and 96 reflect modern geography. The Robert de Vaugondys, following Sanson's example, include maps of the postal routes, roads and canal systems of the European countries but herein they are significantly more accurate. Special attention has been paid to the Far East and to North America where the French explorers made such important strides during the eighteenth century. The maps of the East Indies, China, Japan; the maps of Africa and Egypt; and the maps of North America, Canada, Virginia & Maryland, Colonies Angloises are especially interesting in this atlas because they include information gathered from the latest explorations of the area. In particular, California and Australia are represented in truer form. The finish date of 1758 is given on the basis of the date on the map numbered 24 'Carte du royaume de France'. Nordenskjold 245; NMM 266; Phillips Atlases I.619; Sabin 71863. (20 3/4 x 16 1/2 inches). Letterpress 'avertissement' leaf, 33pp. text, 1p. 'table des articles', 5pp. subscribers, 1p. with details of costs and additional maps.
