Account of Russia as it Was in the Year 1710

Twickenham: Strawberry Hill Private Press, 1758. 1st edition, printed by Horace Walpole at his "neo-Gothic" villa, Strawberry Hill, represented in an engraving on the title page in an early stage of its construction. (It was finished, I believe, in 1776). Walpole also wrote the anonymous introduction. This copy is an old rebinding with minimal ex-library marks. The boards are polished speckled leather with gilt borders, raised bands and gilt title on spine, red edges. A handsome book in spite of some scrapes on the spine. Bookplate on front pastedown states: "The Library of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Bequest of Julia Morgan Marlatt". Small lib. stamp on obverse of title page, crossed by 'withdrawn' stamp. Pencilled note on 1st page of text reads, "Gift. Julia M. Marlatt, 2-13-42". There are also pencilled notes by an owner on the 2nd blank page, mentioning among other things that this is the 5th production of Walpole's press. Prelims have moderate foxing; almost none in text. The title page is much less bright than the rest; apparently the book was left unbound for a while, and the title page collected some soiling, and a tear on the foreedge. Overall a good plus copy. Has xxiv-page intro, 158 pp. text, errata page in rear.. First Edition. Hard Cover.

The pamphlet describes their plans for ridding London of violent gangs, for dealing with the problems of beggars and homeless boys and girls, and gaming in public houses. An album of botanical paintings on vellum. Drawings dated 1781-1782.

Folio album (mount dimensions 460 x 65 mm, vellum sheet dimensions 300 x 235 mm), comprising 35 botanical paintings, 16 of which are by Peter Brown and signed by him, body- and watercolours on vellum, the vellums mounted within a green and yellow wash frame borders on heavy card, the Montagu paintings numbered consecutively 1-19, the Brown painting unnumbered; contemporary straight-grained morocco, elaborate gilt panels with green and yellow morocco overlays with greek key border, floral border, gilt greek key dentelles, spine with elaborate gilt panels and green morocco label 'Drawings', gilt edges, bookplate and label of Kimbolton Castle on front marbled paper pastedown. A fine series of beautifully executed paintings of exotic flowering plants, recently introduced into cultivation. They were painted by Peter Brown and his pupil Elizabeth Montagu in the style of Ehret. Peter Brown (fl 1758-99) was court painter to the Prince of Wales, and probable pupil of Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708 - 1770). Elizabeth Montagu (1741-1832) was an accomplished botanical artist herself, and was probably taught by Brown. Some of the Brown paintings also contain insects./The South African plant specimens present, such as the Bird of Paradise is a monocotyledonous flowering plant indigenous to South Africa. Common names include Strelitzia, Crane Flower or Bird of Paradise, reflect some of the introductions made by the botanist and plant collector Francis Masson (1741-1805), who was sent by Kew Gardens to South Africa in 1772 to collect plants and bulbs. He collected until the end of 1775, before going on to the Canaries, Azores, Maderia, and West Indies (where many of the other plants depicted derive from), returning to England in 1781. This time frame matches closely that of the present album. He was working under the aegis of Sir Joseph Banks, director of Kew, and also friend of George Montagu, Elizabeth's husband, so a Masson/Kew provenance of some of the plants is most likely./Two of the Montagu paintings are dated: number seven is dated 1781 and number twelve 1782.

Lacking the frontispiece of San Francisco Xavier, as is often the case. Not the first edition of Fr. Ripalda's Catecism, but the first of that work translated into Najuatl or Aztec or the Mexican language. It begins with the title in Aztec, followed by the title in Castillan; there is a profusion of cul-de-lampes and elegant initial letters throughout. Fr. Paredes (1703 - 66?), a Jesuit, was extremely proficient in the Mexican or Najuatl language, as Beristain de Souza tells us, and zealous in his labors among the native Mexicans at the Colegio de San Gregorio, which had been established by the Jesuits for the education specifically of the indigenous people.Beristain also notes that it was the best of the numerous catecisms in that language. It is based on the work of Fr. Ripalda, an Italian Jesuit, but a small "Doctrina" with other material was added by Paredes, all intended for the use of ministers working among this population, but in the introduction he also urges "los indios" to read it as well. The book is in very nice shape altogether: the first signature has some light foxing, but the remainder of the text is quite clean, with good margins. It has been attractively rebound in full 17th-18th century style paneled calf, with red morocco spine label. Very nice copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

FRENCH AND INDIAN CRUELTY; EXEMPLIFIED IN THE LIFE AND VARIOUS VICISSITUDES OF FORTUNE, OF PETER WILLIAMSON, A DISBANDED SOLDIER. CONTAINING A PARTICULAR ACCOUNT OF THE MANNERS, CUSTOMS AND DRESS OF THE SAVAGES...A SUMMARY OF THE TRANSACTIONS OF THE SEVERAL PROVINCES OF PENNSYLVANIA (INCLUDING PHILADELPHIA), NEW YORK, NEW ENGLAND...FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE WAR IN THOSE PARTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE RELATIVE TO THE INTENDED ATTACK ON CROWN POINT AND NIAGARA, AND AN ACCURATE AND SUCCINCT DETAIL OF THE SIEGE OF OSWEGO

York. 1758.. [2],104pp. Later three-quarter calf and marbled boards, expertly rebacked, spine gilt. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Some mild foxing, but generally internally quite clean. Very good. Lacks the half title. "The second edition, with corrections and amendments," issued the year after the superlatively rare first edition, of what Vail calls "the most popular of all Indian captivities." Peter Williamson was born in Scotland, but was kidnapped and sold into bondage in Pennsylvania when he was eight years old. His master proved kind and ultimately became his benefactor, leaving Williamson enough money to marry and establish himself on a farm near the forks of the Delaware. In 1754 he was captured by Indians, probably Delawares, held captive for three months, and submitted to various tortures and humiliations. Escaping in January 1755, he joined the army and was sent first to Boston, then with the expedition to defend Oswego. When Oswego was captured by the French, he was wounded and taken prisoner. Ultimately, he was paroled and sent to England, arriving in November 1756. Williamson's narrative is vivid and detailed, deserving of the interest and editions it evoked. It served as a model for many later narratives, and numerous fictional treatments stole details from it. This is the earliest obtainable edition, the first existing in only a few copies. VAIL 526. Contemporary calf, gilt spine, rubbed. Minor worming in front cover & firstleaves, a little browning & foxing but a very good copy. Contemporary notation on title, stamp of Society of Jesus on flyleaf, & booklabel. FIRST EDITION. This famous defense of intolerance offered some very interesting observations on demography in its analysis of the political causes and effects of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre and expulsion of Protestants from France. At the time of writing the issue of tolerance had come up again, and Caveirac's work made a considerable stir. The author of the N.B.G. article on him compared it to Naude's work of similar title on science and magic. Sauvy, 'Quelques demographes ignore du XVIIIe siecle,' in Spengler, Economie et population.
