        De l'esprit

Paris: Chez Durand, 1758. First edition, second issue. 4to (9-3/4 x 7-1/4 inches). [4], xxii, 643, [1] pp. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with red leather label, marbled endpapers and edges. Upper joint starting but solid, half-title with small stain at outer edge, overall a fresh, crisp copy. Smith E.1B . First edition of the last major work of the French philosopher and encyclopédiste, Helvetius, DE L'ESPRIT (On the Mind) was condemned by the Church and the Sorbonne for its uncompromising atheism, regarded as dangerously revolutionary by the Court of Louis XV, and publicly condemned by Parliament. A follower of Locke's empiricism, Helvetius's work was an important development in the history of utilitarian thought, and both Bentham and Mill were strongly influenced by Helvetius' elaboration of a theory which saw mankind as the product of his environment and his education. The first issue of the first edition is very rare: Smith locates only 15 copies. Although the second issue of the 1758 quarto is not as rare as the first, it should be noted that only one copy of the First edition has appeared at auction (in ABPC) since 1975, and that copy was the first issue; no copies of the second issue have appeared for 30 years

Italy 1758 - On offer is a super 1750s handwritten Italian manuscript book of militaria which appears to have been an officer in training's vade mecum notebook or journal as evidenced by an extensive three page 'Tavola' [Table] of Contents with chapters on military protocol, etiquette, theory, tactics and practice +++. This 250+ year old manuscript is bound in simple, though charming, beige colored thick card stock with a fold over flap and a very interesting binding on the spine. Both covers are blank with no writing, titles or designs with the exception of the letter "T" handwritten on the back cover. The text paper is of premium quality with a partial watermark discernible. As to authorship and ownership the only clues are on the last pages wherein our author made some personal notes including references to "Capitan Tenente [Lieutenant Captain], 10 Giugno 1758 and with a name "Nicolo Enzzo Savio[?]." Researchers with a facility for Italian will most assuredly be able to fill in the blanks. The book has one page preface, three page 'Tavola' of contents and then 158 pages of writing + 11 blank pages for a total of 175 pages. [The author hand numbered and miss-numbered the pages twice at pages 68 (for one extra page) and page 105 (for two extra pages) but stopped numbering at page 158.] There are also a number of stubs of paper having been cut or torn out but no evidence of any writing or ink anywhere on the stubs. The last page of text does seem to conclude this manuscript. 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" soft cover. Overall VG. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

(BRUNET, II, 747 - GRAESSE, III, 106 - KRESS LIBRARY, 5695). Half leather with original publisher's boards. Extremely worn - much leather has perished. Hinges tender. Pencil notations front endpapers. Former owner's name on title page. Tear to preface page. Foxing within. Occasional small tear or folded corner. Large parts of former fold-out plates missing and a fifth plate is torn out. The first book on ventilation. A pioneer in public health, Hales discussed such topics as preserving corn by ventilation, keeping gunpowder dry, drying hops and malt, the danger of swathing infants, infections, quarantines, smoking chimneys, cucumber frames, lace-makers, causes of scurvy, how scalding hot tea is unwholesome, freezing wine, etc. Both sections indexed.

York. . 1758 - [2],104pp. Later three-quarter calf and marbled boards, expertly rebacked, spine gilt. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Some mild foxing, but generally internally quite clean. Very good. Lacks the half title. "The second edition, with corrections and amendments," issued the year after the superlatively rare first edition, of what Vail calls "the most popular of all Indian captivities." Peter Williamson was born in Scotland, but was kidnapped and sold into bondage in Pennsylvania when he was eight years old. His master proved kind and ultimately became his benefactor, leaving Williamson enough money to marry and establish himself on a farm near the forks of the Delaware. In 1754 he was captured by Indians, probably Delawares, held captive for three months, and submitted to various tortures and humiliations. Escaping in January 1755, he joined the army and was sent first to Boston, then with the expedition to defend Oswego. When Oswego was captured by the French, he was wounded and taken prisoner. Ultimately, he was paroled and sent to England, arriving in November 1756. Williamson's narrative is vivid and detailed, deserving of the interest and editions it evoked. It served as a model for many later narratives, and numerous fictional treatments stole details from it. This is the earliest obtainable edition, the first existing in only a few copies. VAIL 526.         Veduta del Tempio della Fortuna Virile

Rome 1758 - Hind 46 First State.John Wilton-Ely 162From the important series \"Veduta de Roma\"\"Temple of Virile Fortune is now thought to be the Temple of Portunus\" (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and \"like Callot makes great use of the swelling line\" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi\'s own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etchings. San Fran

Quérard, VI, 289 (in fine). Exemplaire du baron de Fechenbach, avec vignette ex-libris armoriée contrecollée sur les premières gardes, et ex-libris manuscrit au titre. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Atlas Universel

chez les auteurs & Boudet, Paris 1758 - Bound to style in 19th-century calf, the covers elaborately panelled in blind, the large central panel with a diamond-shaped lattice in blind, spine in eight compartments, titled in blind in the second, the others with repeat decoration in blind, marbled endpapers A fine copy of the Robert de Vaugondy's great atlas Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy were descendents of Nicolas Sanson, and their atlas is clearly a continuation of Sanson's great work, Cartes Generales de Toutes les Parties de Monde published in 1654 and later enhanced and enlarged by Hubert Jaillot. Of the 108 maps, 12 are of the ancient world and 96 reflect modern geography. The Robert de Vaugondys, following Sanson's example, include maps of the postal routes, roads and canal systems of the European countries but herein they are significantly more accurate. Special attention has been paid to the Far East and to North America where the French explorers made such important strides during the eighteenth century. The maps of the East Indies, China, Japan; the maps of Africa and Egypt; and the maps of North America, Canada, Virginia & Maryland, Colonies Angloises are especially interesting in this atlas because they include information gathered from the latest explorations of the area. In particular, California and Australia are represented in truer form. The finish date of 1758 is given on the basis of the date on the map numbered 24 'Carte du royaume de France'. Nordenskjold 245; NMM 266; Phillips Atlases I.619; Sabin 71863. (20 3/4 x 16 1/2 inches). Letterpress 'avertissement' leaf, 33pp. text, 1p. 'table des articles', 5pp. subscribers, 1p. with details of costs and additional maps. Engraved title, 108 double-page engraved maps, all hand-coloured in outline and mounted on guards, each map stencilled on the verso twice with an identifying title.

Arithmetika Horvatszka, koju Za Obchinszku vszega Orszaga haszen, y potrebochu z-vnogemi izebranemi Példami obilnò iztolnachil, y na szvetlo dál je: Mihaly Sillobod, drugàch Bolssich

8 p.l., 384, [36] pp. Thickish 8vo, cont. Croatian (?) binding of calf over boards (three corners & head of spine a little worn, occasional minor foxing), covers ruled in blind. Zagreb: A. Reiner, 1758. First edition of the first Croatian book on arithmetic. This is an extremely rare book with no copy in OCLC. In 2008 a reprint with a new introduction was issued on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the publication of this work. At the same time, a Croatian postage stamp was issued to commemorate the anniversary. "Public education in Croatian regions under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy had not yet been organized even in the first half of the 18th century... "The growing needs in trade and economy forced the teachers of that time to pay more attention to doing sums and calculations. At that time, however, the only handbooks for mathematical operations existed only in foreign languages while it was necessary to teach the population in the Croatian language. This is why Mijo Šilobod Bolšic wrote his first arithmetic in the Croatian language, more specifically in the Kaikavian dialect, published in the year 1758 in Zagreb, entitled "Arithmetika Horvatszka"... "Mijo Šilobod Bolšic was born in the year 1725 in the village Sveti Martin pod Okicem. He attended the gymnasium in Zagreb, studied philosophy in Vienna and continued his studies of theology in Bologna. He served as parish priest in various parishes in the Kaikavian regions of Croatia. Šilobod wrote several works of different contents in the Croatian and Latin languages but had become best known for his very extensive book on arithmetic... "In writing his arithmetic handbook Šilobod used some foreign arithmetic books, among them the well known handbook of arithmetic written by the Italian author Giuseppe Maria Figatelli. Šilobod's handbook is divided into four parts: the first part contains the four mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; the second part describes all operations with fractions, the third part contains the simple and complex rule of three, and the fourth part contains practical trading accounts, debts, profits, losses, mix calculus and many others. In this fourth chapter there are also some more complex explanations, probably intended for pupils who have already sufficiently mastered the first three parts of the book. At the end of the book, on thirty-six un-paginated pages, we find displayed various practical tables. This entirely defines the task and purpose of this work, i.e. the knowledge of the basic accounts and all the accounts that appear in practical life, particularly in trade... "Since the handbook was written in the Croatian language, this is where the Croatian arithmetical terminology appears for the first time. Šilobod had obviously used terms that were already recorded in dictionaries; however, this was entirely insufficient because his needs were much greater. On the other hand, the more complex mathematical terms could not be easily found in dictionaries and they were not used by the wide population. "This is the reason that Šilobod found out he was facing a huge problem: it would be the first time to record the existing mathematical terminology in a published book, naturally, in the Kaikavian region for which he had written his handbook. He would then have had to adapt the terminology that had already been present in dictionaries, particularly in the dictionary of J. Belloszténëcz. Afterwards he himself would have had to coin the terms he needed, using the already existing roots of specific words of related meaning in the Kaikavian dialect of the Croatian language. He had obviously coined some names by translating Latin terms that he then adjusted to the Kaikavian expression... "Šilobod's arithmetic has great significance in the Croatian culture, particularly because this is the first arithmetic in the Croatian language: it was the first appearance of the systematically used Croatian mathematical terminology. Besides, the handbook had an important role in the education of the Croatian people at the time when great need occurred for the enhancement of the knowledge of accounting in trade and economy."-Žarko Dadic, A very good copy of a very unusual imprint. .

Le droit des gens ou principes de la loi naturelle appliques a la conduite et aux affaires des nations & des souverains. A Leide: aux depens de la Compagnie, 1758.

      - Early edition of the classic text on international law, published in the same year as the first 'London' [i.e. Neuchatel] edition, and nine years before Vattel's death in 1767. This work was much read in the American colonies, and greatly influenced the thinking of the framers of the American constitution. 'No writer on the law of nations before Vattel had so consistently - and persistently - emphasized freedom, independence, and interdependence as the condition of states in their relations with one another. The authors of the American Declaration would soon adopt his repeated insistence that states were "free and independent" as the conception of their own states' condition. By doing so, they enacted Vattel's central contention that - in the words of his contemporary English translator - "independence is ever necessary to each state"; to secure that independence "it is sufficient that nations conform to what is required of them by the natural and general society, established among all mankind." In due course, this would become the standard modern definition in international law of independence as "the capacity to enter into relations with other states." In 1775 Benjamin Franklin sought out the latest edition of Vattel's work for the benefit of Congress" (David Armitage, The Declaration of Independence: A Global History, Harvard, 2007, pp. 40-41). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 4to, two volumes in one, [xxxvi], 228, [xvi], 162 pp., contemporary half calf, rubbed, rebacked with original label, outer leaves a little dusty, occasional spotting, a very good copy.
