Contemporary corrections in ink which have been cut when the book was bound. A few minor stains, uopper corner torn off on p. 43 with loss of pagination. Bookplate.Johan Brelin (1734-82) departed for China in january 1755 with the Swedish East India Company's ship Sophia Albertina under the command of Captain Carl Gustav Lehman. The return trip from China became long and circumstantial. Brelin got lost, broke his ankle and was left astern on the Island of Ascension in the Indian Ocean. He feared "a death which with good reason can be called the hardest", but was saved in the last minute by a French ship. With a broken mast they sailed to Brazil and then to Portugal, where Brelin for a short while was suspected to be a spy. Penniless he spent a winter in Amsterdam before returning to Sweden in April 1757. In Stockholm Brelin found that he "already had been wept for as deceased" and that his family still wore mourning for his sake. His adventurous account is still characterized by a cheerful temperament and an open disposition. A facsimile edition was published in 1973. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Essai sur l'Amelioration des Terres

Paris: chez Durand, , 1758. Duodecimo (161 x 92 mm). Contemporary French red crushed morocco, three-line gilt border on sides, decorative gilt spine, all edges gilt, gilt patterned endpapers. Wood-engraved title decoration, engraved headpiece to Dedication, 3 folding engraved plates of fields. A beautiful copy. First edition, scarce, of a highly influential book: "Its influence was to be very great and Pattullo was to be quoted throughout the rest of the century as one of the famous agriculturists of his time, and the founder of a definite agricultural system (...) the Essai is a handbook of English farming for the use of the French" (Andre J. Bourde, The Influence of England on the French Agronomes 1750-1789, Cambridge 1953, p. 78). It is also one of the earliest works to publicise the views of the French Enlightenment economist Francois Quesnay (1694-1774). who had published two articles on agriculture in the Encyclopedie: "Fermiers" (1756) and "Grains" (1757). Pattullo, a Scot, has been described as Quesnay's "first foreign disciple". Henry Pattullo, possibly a Jacobite exile who fled to France following the '45, is an obscure but important figure in 18th century writing on agriculture. "[His] Essay on the Improvement of Land (...) was the first work to describe properly the new methods of crop rotation practised in England and Flanders" (Milward & Saul, The Economic Development of Continental Europe 1780-1870, p. 80). A lovely copy of a seminal work.

L'Ami Des Hommes, Ou Traité De La Population. Première Partie. Nouvelle Edition. Augmenteé d'une quatrième Partie & de Sommaires].

Paris, 1758 - A work of fundamental importance, whose appearance created a sensation throughout Europe, was widely translated and reprinted, and earned its author an international reputation "greater than that of any other economist before or after, not excluding Adam Smith or Karl Marx-" (Schumpeter, p. 175n) Mirabeau argues that wealth is the product of population -- in particular, agriculture -- and that a large populartion is desirable, that religious toleration, free enterprise, a more equitable system of taxation and distribution of wealth were necessary components of a vital economy. The first three parts appeared in 1756; by 1758, Mirabeau had fallen under the influence of Quesnay, and issued the fourth part in which the latter's influence is very much felt. The two between them, it may be said, founded the school of the physiocrats.         Characteristics of the present political state of Great Britain.

      A. Millar 1758 - Londres, A. Millar, 1758. A dissertation on the number of mankind in antient and modern times''. Account of Russia as it Was in the Year 1710

Twickenham: Strawberry Hill Private Press, 1758. 1st edition, printed by Horace Walpole at his "neo-Gothic" villa, Strawberry Hill, represented in an engraving on the title page in an early stage of its construction. (It was finished, I believe, in 1776). Walpole also wrote the anonymous introduction. This copy is an old rebinding with minimal ex-library marks. The boards are polished speckled leather with gilt borders, raised bands and gilt title on spine, red edges. A handsome book in spite of some scrapes on the spine. Bookplate on front pastedown states: "The Library of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Bequest of Julia Morgan Marlatt". Small lib. stamp on obverse of title page, crossed by 'withdrawn' stamp. Pencilled note on 1st page of text reads, "Gift. Julia M. Marlatt, 2-13-42". There are also pencilled notes by an owner on the 2nd blank page, mentioning among other things that this is the 5th production of Walpole's press. Prelims have moderate foxing; almost none in text. The title page is much less bright than the rest; apparently the book was left unbound for a while, and the title page collected some soiling, and a tear on the foreedge. Overall a good plus copy. Has xxiv-page intro, 158 pp. text, errata page in rear.. First Edition. Hard Cover.

An album of botanical paintings on vellum. Drawings dated 1781-1782.

Folio album (mount dimensions 460 x 65 mm, vellum sheet dimensions 300 x 235 mm), comprising 35 botanical paintings, 16 of which are by Peter Brown and signed by him, body- and watercolours on vellum, the vellums mounted within a green and yellow wash frame borders on heavy card, the Montagu paintings numbered consecutively 1-19, the Brown painting unnumbered; contemporary straight-grained morocco, elaborate gilt panels with green and yellow morocco overlays with greek key border, floral border, gilt greek key dentelles, spine with elaborate gilt panels and green morocco label 'Drawings', gilt edges, bookplate and label of Kimbolton Castle on front marbled paper pastedown. A fine series of beautifully executed paintings of exotic flowering plants, recently introduced into cultivation. They were painted by Peter Brown and his pupil Elizabeth Montagu in the style of Ehret. Peter Brown (fl 1758-99) was court painter to the Prince of Wales, and probable pupil of Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708 - 1770). Elizabeth Montagu (1741-1832) was an accomplished botanical artist herself, and was probably taught by Brown. Some of the Brown paintings also contain insects./The South African plant specimens present, such as the Bird of Paradise is a monocotyledonous flowering plant indigenous to South Africa. Common names include Strelitzia, Crane Flower or Bird of Paradise, reflect some of the introductions made by the botanist and plant collector Francis Masson (1741-1805), who was sent by Kew Gardens to South Africa in 1772 to collect plants and bulbs. He collected until the end of 1775, before going on to the Canaries, Azores, Maderia, and West Indies (where many of the other plants depicted derive from), returning to England in 1781. This time frame matches closely that of the present album. He was working under the aegis of Sir Joseph Banks, director of Kew, and also friend of George Montagu, Elizabeth's husband, so a Masson/Kew provenance of some of the plants is most likely./Two of the Montagu paintings are dated: number seven is dated 1781 and number twelve 1782.
