        HISTOIRE DE LA LOUISIANE.

Paris: Chez de Bure [et al], 1758. - Three volumes. xvi,358; 441; 451,[3]pp. plus forty engraved plates, two folding maps, folding plan, and errata. Half title in each volume. 16mo. Three more years were consumed in printing, and it was not until May, 1758, that it was ready for delivery. Up to that time 170 copies had been subscribed for, and the editors say, in the Pennsylvania Journal, May 11. 1758, 'a number of copies yet remain not subscribed for,' and 'any person may be supplied' until 'the 17th of July next, after which we will not further extend the sale'": The Charlemagne Tower Collection of American Colonial Laws 165.

Ausgabe). Please notify before visiting to see a book.         Catecismo mexicano.

Mexico: Impr. de la Bibliotheca Mexicana Small 8vo (14.5 cm; 5.75"). [17] ff., 170 pp., [1] f.; plt.. 1758 The first edition of Father Ignacio de Paredes's translation of Father Ripalda's Spanish-language catechism into Nahuatl. Both men were Jesuits, but in different centuries and on different continents: Ripalda was born in Spain in 1535 and died in 1618, never having left Europe; Paredes was born in Mexico in 1703 and died there the year this book was published, hailed as one of the most important Nahuatl scholars of the period. Beristain describes Paredes as being "outstanding in the Mexican language." His volume was intended for use by missionaries, by parish priests, and by Indians: Indeed, there is a => prologue intended to persuade Indians in particular to read and learn this catechism. The volume is illustrated with woodcut arms on the verso of the second title-page and bears many woodcut initials and tailpieces throughout => This copy retains Ortuño's engraved frontispiece (often missing) of St. Francis. Binding: A very interesting contemporary Mexican sprinkled calf binding, probably by a "provincial" binder. Covers with a single gilt-roll border having a modest corner device in each corner, that tool reused to form a four-part center design on each cover; same gilt-roll used on spine to accent the slightly raised bands and form spine compartments, one of these compartments with a spine-label and one having the covers' corner device gilt-tooled at its center. Board edges also with a gilt-roll design; all edges green. Highly unusual endpapers of a pattern in blue and red resembling images of strings in string theory: This is the first time we have ever seen this pattern. Binding as above, in good condition; light offsetting from it to early and late leaves. A few small areas of discoloration where candle wax spilled on a page, and a bit of other light toning; p. 135 with "Per Omnia Secula Seculorum" neatly written in bottom margin. Very good.

        HISTOIRE DE LA LOUISIANE

Paris: Chez de Bure [et al], 1758. Half title in each volume. 16mo. Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt. A beautiful, fresh, fine set. One of the most useful contemporary authorities on French Louisiana, based on the author's sixteen-year residence there. Jefferson instructed Lewis and Clark to take an edition of the book on their expedition. Le Page du Pratz affords a great deal of useful information on the Natchez and other Mississippi tribes, and his work as a whole has been the basis for many later studies of the period. "...Valuable for showing French claims to southern territory east of the Mississippi and for particulars concerning Indian nations there" - Howes. Of special interest is a short account of Louis de St. Denis' expedition to New Mexico in 1715. "...A curious mixture of history, travel narrative, tall stories, and reminiscences...touch[ing] upon almost every phase of Louisiana in [the author's] time..." - Clark. There is a folding plan of New Orleans and a "Carte de la Louisiane" which shows a large eastward-flowing Missouri. SIEBERT SALE 675 (this copy). HOWES L266, "aa." CLARK I:75. GRAFF 2462. RADER 2219.         Op. 1A]. [Sei Sonate a Violino Solo e Basso dedicate A Sua Eccellenza Il Signor Principe Don Lorenzo Corsini. Gravee par Melle Vendome. Opera 1A.] [Score].

Aux adresses ordinaires [1758], Paris - Ferrari was ".considered one of Tartini's best Italian pupils. [He] composed only instrumental works, of which the most important are the violin sonatas with continuo. While his consistent use of a figured bass in these sonatas is characteristic of the Baroque, his treatment of form, melody and harmony associates him more closely with the emerging Classical style. Ferrari's use of harmonies [in op. 1, no. 5] is one of the earliest applications of this technique." Virginia D. Kock in Grove Music Online. The Meyer collection, formed over a period of some 75 years, was one of the most important collections of printed music, musical autographs, and books on music of the 20th century. 1f. (dedication), [i] (blank), 2-37, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Notated on two systems: violin and figured bass. Some staining and foxing; closely trimmed with slight loss to pp. 7 and 13; professional paper repair to two final leaves; title lacking. First Edition. Paper repairs to inner margin. First Edition. RISM F 284. Not in Lesure. Publisher's catalogue is Johansson facs. 23, of 1760 (same plate, including Privilege du Roy). The placement of the words "Mis au jour. Par Huberti" to the left and right of "Opera III" (rather than among the publishers in the imprint) on the title suggests that they were added later and that there was an earlier issue without Huberti's (Huberty's) name; the inclusion of Ferrari's op. 4 in the catalogue would support this.

Colured by a later hand.Impressive and very rare map showing all the plantations on the Cottica, Commewijne and Suriname rivers. It is the large, completely new engraved edition of this map, and the largest of the Lavaux maps, with added the "Oranje weg' which was constructed in 1752. The map was to replace older maps that gave insufficient information on the plantations and their situation. Depicted are also several "wegloopersdorpen' in the outbacks on fire, villages in which runaway slaves, the so-called Marrons, of African origin, lived and many of which were burned down by the colonial troops. Prijs: € 5.250,-.

Heavy rubbing and evidence of fire damage to boards. Occasional spots of foxing to plate margins, overall internally clean and crisp. Hugh Hamilton (1729-1805) Irish clergyman, natural philosopher and Fellow of the Royal Society.
