        Four Prints of an Election

Published 24th Feb.ry 1755, as the Act directs. [c.1758] - Copper engraving and etching Images 400 x 536 mm, Plates 434 x 555 mm, Sheets 459 x 606 mm A rare set of lifetime impressions of William Hogarth's Four Prints of an Election. The series satirises the notorious Oxfordshire election of 1754. Two years prior, the Whiggish party, who already held a large majority in Parliament, decided that they would contest the Oxfordshire seats. The Conservatives were the hegemonic force, and the seats had not been challenged since 1710. This heralded a two year campaign trail for both parties which was characterised by unprecedented levels of expenditure, bribery and corruption. Begun in 1754, and sold to David Garrick, the original paintings are now housed in Sir John Soane's Museum. Owing to the returning officer's decision to call a double return, and thus leave the judgement to the House of Commons, by the time that the Whig candidates were elected on the 23rd of April 1755, Hogarth had already released the first engraving to subscribers. Plate 1. An Election Entertainment Hogarth's 'An Election Entertainment' depicts a feast hosted by the Whigs as they champion their party for parliament. The Tory opposition parade outside, and advocate trivial issues such as their opposition to the Jewish Naturalisation Act of 1753, the Marriage Act, and the Gregorian Calendar. The two Whig candidates are surrounded by an assembly of drunken characters. An obese and toothless woman embraces the younger of the candidates to the left. A man sets his wig afire, whilst a small girl steals a ring from his finger. To the near right, a gentleman with scratches on his face lets smoke from his pipe blow into the other candidate's eye. Elsewhere, a clergyman, believed to be Dr. James Cosserat of Exeter College, removes his wig to wipe his sweating head. A large, reclining man is being bled by a barber-surgeon to relieve him of the effects caused by a surfeit of oysters. In the foreground, a butcher pours gin on the scalp-wound of Teague Carter, an Oxford fighter who was employed as an electoral ruffian. To his right, another head trauma ensues as the candidates' agent is struck by a Tory brick. His open book displays two columns; one side is marked 'sure votes,' the other, 'Doubtfull.' In the background, a portrait of William III has been slashed. Paulson 198 vi/viii. Hogarth is thought to have liaised with an unknown engraver, hence why 'the Whole' has been effaced from Hogarth's signature to the bottom left. BM Satires 3285 Plate 2. Canvassing for Voters Hogarth's 'Canvassing for Voters' is engraved by Charles Grignion the Elder. It is a more rural scene, and shows an alehouse on the left, whilst two inns appear to the right. The allegiance of the first is Whig, the second is Tory. The inn in the background is the Whig stronghold. Its title, 'The Excise Office' alludes to Walpole's Excise Bill of 1733. Walpole later dropped the tax, but it remained political fodder for his opponents. Hence why a Conservative mob besieges the building, though the man sawing the excise sign seems unaware that it will drop on his fellow rioters. The inn in the foreground is a Tory headquarter, as 'The Royal Oak' recalls Conservative support for the Stuart monarchy. In the centre, a young country gentleman is bribed by agents of both parties. The pose of the group comedically mimics the Choice of Hercules, though the route proposed is far from virtuous. To the right of him, hypocrisy abounds. The Tories fiercely opposed the Jewish Bill, yet the merchant from whom a portly candidate buys trinkets for ladies on the balcony is clearly of Jewish descent. On the left, two veterans sit under an alehouse sign which states 'Tobello.' This refers to The Battle of Porto Bello, a celebrated naval excursion in 1739 in which Admiral Vernon captured the Spanish settlement. This is steeped in irony however, for the most recent naval battle in British history was the humiliating loss of Minorca in 1756. Subtle allusions are made to this disparity i

Three more years were consumed in printing, and it was not until May, 1758, that it was ready for delivery. Up to that time 170 copies had been subscribed for, and the editors say, in the Pennsylvania Journal, May 11. 1758, 'a number of copies yet remain not subscribed for,' and 'any person may be supplied' until 'the 17th of July next, after which we will not further extend the sale'": The Charlemagne Tower Collection of American Colonial Laws 165.         The culture of silk: or, an essay on its rational practice and improvement. In four parts ... For the use of the American colonies.

London: Pr. for A. Millar 8vo. Frontis., xv, [1 (blank)], 299, [1] pp., plt.. 1758 Interest in the production of silk in the New World began with the Spaniards in the 16th century, though despite the best efforts of many in Mexico, the enterprise came to naught. Either undaunted by or unaware of the failure of these earlier efforts, the English in the 18th century attempted the introduction of sericulture into their regions of North America. This early English treatise on the possibilities of silk culture in British North America was aimed at planters and owners of land on which the essential mulberry trees could be planted, and entrepeneurs looking to enter a new business at ground level. In the period 1750 through 1820 there was considerable interest in the development of this potentially lucrative enterprise. The work in hand is divided into four parts: "I. On the raising and planting of mulberry trees. II. On hatching and rearing the silkworms. III. On obtaining their silk, and breed. IV. On reeling their silk-pods." The two plates (one being the frontispiece) show various machinery and tools for, and stages of, the production of silk. The author, a "reverend," flourished 1734–60. Recent quarter calf, antique style. Round spine with raised bands accented with gilt ruling. Gilt center devices in spine compartments. Green morocco title-label. Marbled paper sides. Light foxing. A very good copy.

SERMONS UPON THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS, VIZ. THE DIVINITY OF JESUS CHRIST. THE MILLENIUM. THE WISDOM OF GOD, IN THE PERMISSION OF SIN

Boston: Edes and Gill, 1758. FIRST EDITION y. This unprepossessing volume of sermons by a Congregational minister is a superb example of an early American binding in outstanding condition. The theological meditations making up the text examine the divinity (versus the human nature) of Christ, the promises of the book of Revelations, and the question of whether permitting sin is evidence of God's wisdom. Joseph Bellamy (1719-90) studied at Yale with the great theologian Jonathan Edwards, who became a life-long friend. His memorable and eloquent sermons made him a leading light in the evangelical revival known as the Great Awakening. He revealed one of the secrets of his success as a preacher in his admonition to one of his students, who was given to hellfire and brimstone orations: "thunder less and lighten more," for it is lightning, not thunder, that strikes a man down. Bellamy was respected as a theologian on both sides of the Atlantic, and was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Aberdeen in 1768. His reputation in Britain no doubt suffered when he embraced the cause of American independence. The simple sheepskin binding--done very near the time of printing as evidenced by the inscription on the endpaper--has a dozen double fillets of gilt on the spine, which in Puritan Boston qualified as ornate for a book of this nature. It is rare to find an early American binding in such fine condition.. 159 x 89 mm. (6 1/4 x 3 1/2"). vi, 209, [3] pp. FIRST EDITION. Austere but pleasing contemporary sprinkled sheepskin, raised bands flanked by double gilt fillets. Front free endpaper with ink ownership inscription of S. Williams dated 1759; title page with ink inscription of E. Church dated 1847. Evans 8081. Mild dampstaining to lower outer corner of half a dozen gatherings, faint overall browning (typical of American imprints like this one), F2 with two small paper flaws affecting three words on either side of the leaf, K5 with two-inch light brown stain, but still quite an excellent copy, the text fresh, and the original unsophisticated sheepskin binding in unusually fine condition, with only trivial wear. This unprepossessing volume of sermons by a Congregational minister is a superb example of an early American binding in outstanding condition.         Historia Naturalis Ranarum nostratium. Die natürliche Historie der Frösche hiesigen Landes worinnen alle Eigenschaften derselben sonderlich aber ihre Fortpflanzung umständlich beschrieben werden. Mit einer Vorrede Herrn Albrechts von Haller.

      - Nürnberg, Johann Joseph Fleischmann, 1758. Folio (425 x 300mm). pp. (8), viii, 115, (1), text in parallel columns in Latin and German, with fine handcoloured engraved frontispiece and 24 hand-coloured engraved plates, each with a plain anatomical key engraved plate, 6 engraved headpieces. Contemporary calf, richly gilt ornamented spine with red gilt lettered label, sides with gilt border and corner pieces. A beautifully bound copy of the first edition of the most beautiful work published on amphibians. 'For instance, Roesel von Rosenhof's illustrations of the frogs and other amphibians have never been surpassed in their beauty, accuracy and vitality. The frontispiece to his 'Historia Naturalis Ranarum' , showing frogs in a pond surrounded by wild roses, is beyond praise' (Dance, Art of Natural History p. 74). "The present volume is one of the classics on amphibiology. The illustrations are the finest and the whole work is admirably done. The title and text appear both in Latin and German and there is a preface by A. von Haller - altogether a very valuable, early contribution to the literature of the batrachia' (C.A. Wood). "These plates must be among the most beautiful illustrations in all of herpetology. The complete life cycle of all species of German frogs and toads is presented in great detail - including amplexing adults and developmental stages of tadpoles - together with their anatomy and osteology"(Adler, K. Contributions to the history of herpetology p. 10).The excellent plates are by the author, the frogs and toads are from southern Germany and illustrate internal anatomy, skeletons, embryological development, copulation etc. The anatomical key plates closely follow the coloured versions, omitting or adding anatomical details.Roesel von Roesenhof (1705-1759) was a German artist-naturalist, miniature painter and engraver in Nürnberg, publisher of one of the most beautifully illustrated German entomological works 'Der monatlich-herausgegebenen Insecten-Belustigung .'. There is, as well, a record of the prices of various kinds of tobacco under the late monopoly, the commerce in this commodity, current rates in Amsterdam, and the import and export duties established in Holland. The concluding section deals with the remedial virtues of tobacco, with references to the usual and lesser-known authorities.Front hinge weak. A fine and clean copy of a history of tobacco.
