First Edition. Copy riddled with a frontispiece. Full mottled calf time. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. Head cap weakened. 3 corners bumped. Pretty good copy. The book was originally written in response to a book by Antoine Court (1695-1760), Letter from a patriot of civil tolerance of Protestants of France and the advantages résulteroient for the kingdom (1756); this is why it is written in the vocative. The author justified by historical and economic study seriously the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. "The author does a great display of" scholarship and science in the field of "political economy. Dissertation offers curious reseArches paper" (Michaud). This defense of intolerance provides very interesting remarks on demographics. Finally, the author provides economical solutions to overcome this demographic threat. Disssertation on the day of St. Bartholomew denies that it was a religious matter, and even deaths, and seeks to mitigate the historical significance. The book aroused ample indignation, including Voltaire. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Bon exemplaire. 6 parties en 3 volumes in-4.         Civan, Roi de Bungo, Histoire Japonnaise, ou Tableau de l'Education d'un Prince.

Londres: Jean Nourse, 1758. Two volumes, small octavo; a neat set in contemporary calf, flat spines gilt in compartments. Second edition, following a 1754 version by the same publisher. Both works are of some rarity, NUC listing a single copy of the first and only two copies of this edition. The book is a roman d'éducation about an imagined kingdom of famed serenity and good government, written for Joseph II.Madame le Prince de Beaumont (1711-1780) was a prolific writer whose work was principally known for a 'cachet religieux, moral et sensé' (NBG). Civan is dedicated to Prince Joseph (later Joseph II, first emperor of the House of Hapsburg-Lorraine) best known for an ill-fated series of reforms which attempted to improve the conditions of the peasantry. As the introduction explains, the tale of the Roi de Bungo was intended to offer the young Princes 'un Modèle digne de leur émulation'. Moreover, Beaumont saw in the example of Civan what she contended would provide 'ces Guides qu'il eut besoin de chercher chez des Estrangers'.The work's rarity is confirmed by the entry in the NBG: clearly not having the work to hand, they refer to it as 'Cida, Roi de Burgo'. It has recently been released in a scholarly reprint, edited by Alix Deguise. Slight rubbing.

First Edition. RISM F 284. Not in Lesure. Publisher's catalogue is Johansson facs. 23, of 1760 (same plate, including Privilege du Roy). The placement of the words "Mis au jour... Par Huberti" to the left and right of "Opera III" (rather than among the publishers in the imprint) on the title suggests that they were added later and that there was an earlier issue without Huberti's (Huberty's) name; the inclusion of Ferrari's op. 4 in the catalogue would support this. From the André Meyer collection, with handstamp "Provenant de la collection musicale d'André Meyer Décéde en Mai 1974 F. Meyer Octobre 84," to rear pastedown. Folio. 18th century dark green quarter morocco with marbled boards, red edges. Binding worn, rubbed and bumped. Ferrari was "...considered one of Tartini's best Italian pupils... [He] composed only instrumental works, of which the most important are the violin sonatas with continuo. While his consistent use of a figured bass in these sonatas is characteristic of the Baroque, his treatment of form, melody and harmony associates him more closely with the emerging Classical style... Ferrari's use of harmonies [in op. 1, no. 5] is one of the earliest applications of this technique." Virginia D. Kock in Grove Music Online. The Meyer collection, formed over a period of some 75 years, was one of the most important collections of printed music, musical autographs, and books on music of the 20th century....

First edition of the French translation by Marc-Antoine Eidous illustrated a larger map "of the Province and the Mission of the Society of Jesus of the New Kingdom of Granada" and two folding plates. The original Spanish edition, El Orinoco ilustrado, was published in Madrid in 1741.Binders of the time in full calf marbled fawn, back smooth decorated with boxes and gilded florets and parts as caramel and red morocco, cold filet coaching boards, all marbled.A small working toward the tail of the second volume, some tiny friction on the flat of the first volume, leather joints of Volume cracked minor, otherwise fine copy of freshness.Gumilla Joseph (1686-1750) was a Spanish Jesuit priest, missionary to Colombia and Venezuela. He left Spain in 1705 to join the New Granada (now Colombia). From 1715 and for thirty-five years he lived in the plains of the Orinoco region now belonging to Venezuela. Gumilla take this journey to learn the languages ??of Indian tribes and develop knowledge in astronomy and natural history. On his return to Madrid, he wrote his Natural History after his comments. The book focuses on both the different Indian tribes present in the vicinity Orinoco (Othomacos, Guamoes, Saliva) to their physical appearance, their languages, their customs, rituals and beliefs. The spotlight is also made to wildlife (alligators, snakes, insects, fish, turtles ...).These anthropological and naturalistic observations are nevertheless marked the religious missionary seal; Weiss in the supplement of the ancient and modern universal Biography says in effect: "Having noticed among the Indians similar customs to those of the Hebrews, he concluded that the two peoples have a common origin, and that the Indians descendant of Ham, son Noah cursed, it is with justice that the Spaniards were reduced to slavery. [...] The story of the Orinoco, despite the flaws we have against him, is a very curious book and the reading is very enjoyable. "Nice copy.         L'Architettura di M. Vitruvio Pollione colla Traduzione Italiana e Comento del Marchese Berardo Galiani...

Naples: Stamperia Simoniana, 1758. Folio, with engraved frontispiece and 25 plates, woodcut diagrams and vignettes throughout; contemporary vellum. Splendid edition of Vitruvius, published in large format with 25 detailed plates specially prepared for this edition. This is the best textual edition of Vitruvius, translated and edited by Berardo Galiani, the humanist scholar who reinterpreted the classical architectural canon for eighteenth-century sensibilities. A second edition of this version appeared later the same year in Siena. The Latin text has a facing Italian translation, with the Italian commentary printed below.Vitruvius is the only classical architectural treatise to have survived into the modern era. All printed editions derive from four manuscript copies of which just three are now extant (the manuscript held by the Abbey of Montecassino was destroyed during the Second World War). Some textual differences exist between the known manuscripts; here Galiani's edition is remarkable for his careful collation and translation in order to provide the most accurate text possible. Furthermore, he was the first to produce a bibliography of previous printed editions of Vitruvius, with each entry accompanied by an informative commentary.Vitruvius, while eminently practical in many respects, was deeply concerned with the ritual and mystical magic associated with construction, building and the Roman home itself. The siting of structures was of great importance within the Roman metaphysical canon, additionally his work contains much detail on auguries associated with building, relationships between good fortune and architectural design, and similar themes. The magical and metaphysical aspects of the treatise held great influence on the Renaissance imagination, and the book came to be venerated far beyond its actual intellectual content. Light browning of a few gatherings, some plates thumbed at margins but a handsome copy.

        Corografia del Ducaro di Ferrara

Large and important map of the Duchy of Ferrara, which also covers part of the Bologna and Modena' area, in the third and final edition, with the dedication to Francis II (1792-1806). Third state of the map, engraved by Andrea Bolzoni was published for the first time in 1758, then in 1782 and finally in 1800. Intersting from the hydrographic interest, the map is also interesting because for the first time the settlement and the road network of the Ferrara are highlighted. At the end of the description, in the cartouche with the title, the editor' signature is erased. Copper engraving, mounted on canvas, some dampstains, otherwise in good condition.         All the Works of Epictetus, Which Are Now Extant; Consisting of His Discourses, Preserved by Arrian, in Four Books, The Enchiridion, and Fragments

London: S. Richardson, 1758. First English edition of the works of the second-century Stoic philosopher Epictetus, translated from the Greek by Elizabeth Carter. Born a slave, and crippled early in life, Epictetus gained his freedom in Rome and moved to the Adriatic coast, where he opened a school of philosophy. His Discourses were collected by his student Arrian, who also edited the handbook known as the Enchiridion, and collected the fragments translated here. Epictetus understood philosophy as an active pursuit, more difficult than the abstract exercise of logic: "we are eager and loquacious in the Schools; and, when any little Question arises . . . we are prepared to trace its Consequences: but drag us into Practice, and you will find us miserably shipwrecked." Properly practiced, philosophy is a continual intellectual triumph over personal desires and aversions, liberating us and giving purpose to our lives: "shame doth not consist in not having anything to eat, but in not having reason enough to exempt you from fear and sorrow. But, if you once acquire that exemption, will a tyrant, or his guards and courtiers, be anything to you?" Epictetus's emphasis on self-knowledge and self-discipline greatly impressed the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who quotes him at length in the Meditations, and his philosophy was read across Renaissance Europe in Latin translation. English translator Elizabeth Carter was a scholar and poet: considered "the most learned lady in England," she appears in Richard Samuel's 1778 painting, Nine Living Muses of Great Britain, surrounded by fellow members of the Blue Stocking Circle. Original subscribers to Carter's Epictetus included Samuel Johnson and Elizabeth Montagu, and her translation remained the English standard for two hundred years. A near-fine copy of a classic of Greek and English literature, in a handsome contemporary binding. Large quarto: [a]-[b]4 [c]1 a-e4 f1 B-3T4 3U2. Full contemporary full marbled calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, all edges stained red. Preliminaries include an ode to Epictetus, twelve-page list of subscribers, Carter's introduction, and Arrian's letter; index and appendix at rear. Decorative headpieces, initials, and tailpieces throughout text. Occasional light pencil notes in margin, small ink splatter to 160-161, joints and corners expertly repaired.

This is followed by a long response signed by Father Jose Guadalupe at the nearby Mission de San Juan Capistrano, and shorter responses by 4 other priests at nearby missions in September 1758, all debating whether this was a civil or religious case, and whether divorce or any criminal proceedings were in order.       primo '800. Paris: H.L. Guerin & L.F. Delatour, 1758. First edition. Duhamel (1700-82), French polymath, made notable contributions in agronomy, chemistry, botany, and naval technology. His major interest and contribution to technology and society was in agriculture. Duhamel "adapted Tull's system to France based on his own wide reading in French agronomy and on original experiments."-D.S.B., IV, p. 224. This is the second in Duhamel's series of books describing all aspects of trees and their cultivation. It is one of the most complete treatises on trees, the anatomy and structural properties of wood, and the management of tree stands of the 18th century. In his "Dissertation" (pp. xxix-lxv of Vol. I), Duhamel gives an interesting account of the then-current botanical systems including those of Morison, Ray, Tournefort, Magnol, and Linnaeus. The text of Vol. I is largely concerned with the anatomy of trees. Vol. II is devoted to the most up-to-date methods of tree propagation. Fine and handsome set. Blindstamp of "Ovesholm" on half-titles. This was the castle in southern Sweden built in 1792-1804 by Carl Adam Wrangel (1748-1829), who filled the building with a fine library, paintings, and sculpture. ❧ Pritzel 2468.

Lisbona; Madrid 1758 - Part of a larger smear campaign levelled against the Jesuits in the latter part of the 18th century, this small book is a relation of the "Republic" the Jesuits established in the South American regions of Paraguay and Brazil. In actuality this "Republic" was a series of autonomously governed Jesuit missions (much like Juniperro Serra's missions in California) among the Guarani territory of South America in which each mission included a church, basic housing, a school, farms, and light industry. These highly successful ventures endured for over 150 years, and provided protection for the Guarani people from the ruthless slave-traders of the area, particularly the Portuguese. Pombal, who either wrote or sponsored this work, was the Portuguese Prime Minister and was vehemently anti-Jesuit. After the Jesuits were expelled from the territory, under pressure from both the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns, the European powers moved in to destroy these "Reductiones". The Guarani's led a brief armed resistance (the Guarani War, 1756), but ultimately were defeated and forced to flee back into the rainforest. This book appears to mention the war in the title, and is published only a year following it. This work was first published in Portuguese in 1757 in Lisbon. 8vo (17 x 11cm), 48p., 16p., 38p. Bound in wrappers with some wear and chips. [Variant of Sabin, 63895]

» Bel exemplaire.
