[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition of this translation attributed to J.-H. Schneider.

Eccellente esemplare Etching, circa 1758, without signature. Example in the first state of two. A magnificent impression, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with unidentidied watermark, with full margins, in excellent condition. The work belongs to the famous collection of Raccolta di Teste numero trenta dipinte dal sig. Gio. Batta Tiepolo Pittore Veneto al serviggio di S. M. C. Morto in Madrid l’anno 1770 Incise da Gio. Domenico suo Figlio. It was started by Domenico in 1757, as documented by letters of Anton Maria Zanetti. The sheets were known only to his closest friends by Tiepolo and were published only in the period after the return of the author from Madrid (1770), when the series was completed and published between 1773 and 1774. The engraved portraits by Tiepolo depicting philosophers, sages Levantines, bearded and characters are masterfully created with a style that moves effortlessly from that of Rembrandt than that of Castiglione. Excellent example. Rizzi, L’opera grafica dei Tiepolo, 177; De Vesme 137. Succi, Da Carlevarijs ai Tiepolo, 116, I/II. Dimensioni 135 178mm

First Edition. Full Calf blond marbled time. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. Head cap threadbare. Upper joint split in cap and head. 2 corners bumped. This treaty police is probably the best evidence that we can find on the customs and daily life of French eighteenth. We shall see what we do in terms of wolves or dogs without masters, plague, games at fairs and markets, latrines ... Compared to the famous treatise police Delamare, whose author speaks in his preface, this Treaty has a practical aim, which is why he was put in dictionary form, it contains not only all the edicts relating to a matter but also valuable feedback to the author. Colbert define the term in the police order 1669:'' The police is to ensure public peace and the individual, to provide abundance and let everyone live according to his condition. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia, Carolina, Georgiaand part of Florida. Carte de la Louisiane, Maryland, Virginie, Caroline, Georgie avec une Partie de la Floride.

Americas: Amsterdam. Covens et Mortier Dated 1758 in title. Copper engraved map of the South Eastern states of America from Covens & Mortier's " Nieuwe Atlas, Inhoudennde vier Gedeeltens der Waereld.. " Original full wash colour; verso blank. Original map by Covens & Mortier, based upon the D'Anville's map of the North America published in 1755, showing Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia, Carolina, Georgia and part of Florida. D'Anville's map is significantly different than Mitchell's map of 1755. Most notably, the course of the Ohio River is substantially different than Mitchell's map, as are the River Cherakis and River Ouabache, two of its primary tributaries. The course of the Missouri River and the Appalachicola River is also noticeably different. Cummings notes that the map shows the Indian Settlements between the Appalachians and the Mississippi River, unlike the Mitchell. It also shows the Grenville Line in North Carolina, but not the division between North & South Carolina. The treatment of the east coast from St. Augustine to Delaware Bay is very detailed, as is the treatment of the Chesapeake, Maryland and Virginia. Dark impression; bright full wash colour; printed on heavy paper; 2 short tears to upper blank margin outside platemark ,near centre fold, repaired to verso; old red crayon numbers to verso. Covens & Mortier as a firm existed between 1721-1778, taking over the business of Pierrre Mortier. Johannes / Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier were brothers- in- law following the former's marriage to Mortier's sister Agatha in 1721, when they also formally went in to partnership. Under the Covens and Mortier imprint, Cornelius and Jean republished the works of the great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, & De Wit. The firm would become one of the most prolific Dutch publishing concerns of the 18th century. The company would pass down through the Covens family as Mortier had no children, changing the name to Covens & Zoon until Pieter Mortier IV a great grandson of the original founder joined the firm and saw the name restored to Mortier Covens & Zoon. ( See Koeman I p45). Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697-1782), one of the leading cartographers of the 18th century, and France's royal geographer and cartographer at the end of the reign of Louis XV publishing under the patronage of the Duke of Orleans, brother to the king. Both a geographer and cartographer, he greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography are characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, now regarded as especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such. Compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked relatively empty. He was the publisher of over 200 individual maps, as well as several atlases, including the Atlas General which corrected the errors of the maps of de L'Isle and Sanson. From 1737 onwards he published collections of maps under the title Atlas Generale which went through numerous expanding editions in various languages; English editions were later printed by Robert Sayer, Laurie and Whittle, and others well into the next century. During his whole life he never travelled outside Paris but he built up a vast collection of cartographic material which eventually was passed to the Bibliotheque Nationale. His work is known for its beauty as well as its scientific accuracy.         Legal File from the Villa de San Fernando (Now San Antonio).

1758 - Manuscript Documenting a Complicated 1758 Divorce Case in Spanish Texas [Manuscript]. [Texas]. [San Antonio]. [Early Legal File from the Villa de San Fernando (Now San Antonio, Texas)]. [San Antonio, September 1758]. [50] pp. Folio (12-1/2 x 8-1/2"). Early limp calf folder with thong tie, faint unrelated title to front cover. A few minor scuffs, light rubbing to extremities, text block detached. Text in neat secretarial hand to rectos and versos of all but final leaf, additional 4-page document, 8" x 6," affixed to end of text block. Light toning to leaves, minor worming in a few places. * Established in 1731, Villa de San Fernando de Bexar (now San Antonio) was the first civil settlement in present-day Texas (following a handful of presidios and missions). Offered here is a lengthy case file relating to a resident named Pedro Conitrillo (or Oconitrillo), who had been separated from a wife in Saltillo for seven or eight years and sought a divorce. The first 6 pages are testimony signed by Jose Manuel de Santa Maria, the civil authority at Villa de San Fernando, on 25 August 1758. This is followed by a long response signed by Father Jose Guadalupe at the nearby Mission de San Juan Capistrano, and shorter responses by 4 other priests at nearby missions in September 1758, all debating whether this was a civil or religious case, and whether divorce or any criminal proceedings were in order. One of the opinions is offered by Fray Francisco Aparicio of Mision San Antonio, later famous as the Alamo. Appended are two documents signed by Alcalde Joseph Curbelo, Alberto Lopez and other civil authorities. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Tome I [- Tome II.]

Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine decorated gilt in compartments, edges sprinkled red. Spine ends and joints skilfully repaired; a very good copy. First edition printed in Leiden, published the same year as the "London" (Neufchatel) printing. Vattel, a Swiss jurist, is an important figure in the history of jurisprudence: his work marks the encroachment of positivism on natural law theory. Influenced by Leibnitz and Wolf, Vattel took the theory of natural law one step further: he distinguished between an internal law (law of conscience) and an external law (law of action). Le Droit des Gens, his major work, modernized the whole of international law, bringing it down from the realms of speculation into the sphere of natural relations and problems, and became a classic, particularly in England and the United States of America. It was frequently reprinted and translated. Vattel admits that people's rights cannot be entirely assimilated to natural laws, so they should be dealt with as rights pertaining to Nations. The only grounds for people's rights are in the independence of Nations, that is in their natural freedom. This concept opened the way to modern theories of positive law. However Vattel maintains that states are ruled in their relations with each other by fundamental principles drawn from nature and their common interests - natural law is preserved but it tends to be confused with the factual exigencies of situations. In this way Vattel does not prohibit war but promotes practical ways of achieving peace, which he eulogises in an emotional way.

Colured by a later hand.Impressive and very rare map showing all the plantations on the Cottica, Commewijne and Suriname rivers. It is the large, completely new engraved edition of this map, and the largest of the Lavaux maps, with added the ?Oranje weg? which was constructed in 1752. The map was to replace older maps that gave insufficient information on the plantations and their situation. Depicted are also several ?wegloopersdorpen? in the outbacks on fire, villages in which runaway slaves, the so-called Marrons, of African origin, lived and many of which were burned down by the colonial troops.Prijs: ? 5.850,- (incl. lijst).

        Grants, Concessions, and Original Constitutions

1758 - NEW JERSEY. LAWS. The Grants, Concessions, and Original Constitutions of the Province of New-Jersey. The Acts Passed During the Proprietary Governments, and other Material Transactions . By Aaron Leaming and Jacob Spicer. Philadelphia: W. Bradford, Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty for the Province of New-Jersey, [1758]. Sm. fol. [4], 763 p. Neatly rebound in modern legal-style reversed calf, red and black spine labels. First several leaves dampstained, occasional marginal dampstaining elsewhere in text, otherwise a very clean, tight copy. With the signature of Hugh Hartshorne Bowne. The classic compilation of the foundation documents of New Jersey from 1664 to 1702, accompanied by the session laws from 1668 to 1701. Authorized by the legislature in 1752, the work was assembled over the next six years chiefly by Samuel Nevill and Samuel Smith, and was seem through the press by Aaron Leaming and Jacob Spicer. Of all the compilations of New Jersey laws from the 1752 Nevill volume onward, the "Grants and Concessions" is the scarcest. Dionysius Of Halicarnassus (Greek: ????????? ?????????? ????????????? "Dionysios Son Of Alexandros Of Halikarnassos", C. 60 Bc - After 7 Bc) Was A Greek Historian And Teacher Of Rhetoric, Who Flourished During The Reign Of Caesar Augustus. His Literary Style Was Atticistic - Imitating Classical Attic Greek In Its Prime. He Went To Rome After The Termination Of The Civil Wars, And Spent Twenty-Two Years Studying Latin And Literature And Preparing Materials For His History. During This Period, He Gave Lessons In Rhetoric, And Enjoyed The Society Of Many Distinguished Men. The Date Of His Death Is Unknown. His Great Work, Entitled ??????? ??????????? (Rhomaike Archaiologia, Roman Antiquities), Embraced The History Of Rome From The Mythical Period To The Beginning Of The First Punic War. It Was Divided Into Twenty Books, Of Which The First Nine Remain Entire, The Tenth And Eleventh Are Nearly Complete, And The Remaining Books Exist In Fragments In The Excerpts Of Constantine Porphyrogenitus And An Epitome Discovered By Angelo Mai In A Milan Manuscript. The First Three Books Of Appian, Plutarch's Life Of Camillus And Life Of Coriolanus Also Embody Much Of Dionysius. His Chief Object Was To Reconcile The Greeks To The Rule Of Rome, By Dilating Upon The Good Qualities Of Their Conquerors And Also By Arguing, Using More Ancient Sources, That The Romans Were Genuine Descendants Of The Older Greeks. According To Him, History Is Philosophy Teaching By Examples, And This Idea He Has Carried Out From The Point Of View Of A Greek Rhetorician. But He Carefully Consulted The Best Authorities, And His Work And That Of Livy Are The Only Connected And Detailed Extant Accounts Of Early Roman History. In 1742 Spelman (D. 1767) Translated Xenophon's Anabasis, Under The Title 'The Expedition Of Cyrus Into Persia, With Notes Critical And Historical,' London. It Went Through Several Editions, And Was Republished As Late As 1849. Spelman's Translation Was Styled By Edward Gibbon 'One Of The Most Accurate And Elegant That Any Language Has Produced'. He Also Translated 'A Fragment Out Of The Sixth Book Of Polybius,' London, 1743, And 'The Roman Antiquities Of Dionysius Halicarnassus, With Notes And Dissertations,' London, 1758. The Latter Work Won The Praise Of Adam Clarke, The Former That Of Edward Harwood [Wikipedia]. .

        Book of Common Prayer

1758. BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. The Book of Common Prayer. Cambridge: Joseph Bentham, and Benj. Dod, 1758. Quarto, contemporary full green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $2200.Lovely 1758 Cambridge quarto edition of the magisterial Book of Common Prayer, handsomely bound in contemporary full morocco-gilt.Born of Thomas CranmerÂ’s desire for liturgical texts upon which all of EuropeÂ’s Protestant, English-speaking churches could agree, and which all English-speaking believers could easily comprehend, the Book of Common Prayer, first issued in 1549, has become what Diarmaid MacCulloch calls “one of a handful of texts to have decided the future of a world language.” “Cranmer had been a Cambridge scholar (he had held a lectureship in Biblical studies) and a diplomat, before being plucked by Henry VIII to be archbishop, and he almost certainly did not imagine that he was writing one of the great, abiding works of English literatureÂ… But the acute poetry, balanced sonorities, heavy order, and direct intimacy of CranmerÂ’s prose have achieved permanence, and many of his phrases and sentences are as famous as lines from Shakespeare or the King James Bible” (The New Yorker). Beyond its vocabulary and phraseology, the prayer book is “for most Englishmen second only to the Bible” (PMM 75). Bound with a contemporary edition of Sternhold and HopkinsÂ’ popular metrical psalter. Though the title page is dated 1758, this copy contains four cancel leaves (2C1-4) with prayers celebrating the accession of George III in 1760, instead of the prayers commemorating the accession of George II as called for in the Table of Contents (”A Form of Prayer for the 22d Day of June”). Also included (leaf 2C4r) is a proclamation by George III dated 7 October 1761. Griffiths 1758:6. Old owner inscriptions.Occasional light foxing. Restoration to gutter of leaf [C5]. Spine toned to brown, one vertical crack; light abrasions to boards. A handsome volume in near-fine condition.
