Ouvrage posthume.London [= France?], La Société Typographique, 1773. 2 volumes bound as 1. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine.

Smith, Bibliography H.3; cf. Cioranescu 33651 (other edition); for Helvétius's philosophy: Blom, A Wicked Company, pp. 126-129. Third (or second?) edition of one of the key works of the Radical Enlightenment, published in the same year as the first edition. The author had evoked huge outcry with the publication of De L'esprit (1758), a carefully argued essay on the mind, in which he roundly rejected metaphysics and the idea of Truth, replacing Christian morals by purely utilitarian ethics and stressing the importance of education as the key to moral behaviour. In De l'homme , Helvétius expanded and clarified his views, provoking even Diderot to write a Réfutation . The present edition was most likely printed in France, and, as Smith argues, it was probably this edition that the Paris Parliament condemned on 10 January 1774.Binding slightly rubbed; top of spine slightly worn. Fine copy.

In three volumes. 12mo (16.5 x 9.5 cm). One large folded engraved map of the area of the Venezuelan river Orinoco and two folded engraved plates. Contemporary uniform mottled calf with gilt vignette on front board of the first volume. Spines with gilt floral pattern and red and green morocco labels with gilt titles. Marbled flyleaves. Edges dyed red.l According to Sabin, "The work of Gumilla is one of the most curious and interesting hitherto published upon the country of the Orinoco". José Gumilla (1686-1750) ".was a Jesuit priest who wrote a natural history of the Orinoco River region. In 1705 he left Spain for New Granada (today Colombia) where he studied at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. He was ordained in 1714 and went to the Orinoco Mission. In 1701 he went to Venezuela and worked there for 35 years. He was sometime Rector of the School of Cartagena, Provincial Superior of New Granada, and Procurator in Rome from 1738. Here he wrote El Orinoco Ilustrado (Madrid, 1741). He returned to South America in 1743 with Filippo Salvatore Gilii. Gumilla introduced coffee into Venezuela in 1732. The beans were exported to Brazil" (Wikipedia). French translation of the first Spanish edition published in Madrid 1741. It describes the flora, fauna and the pre-Columbian remains and customs of the Indian tribes in that region. Boards a bit rubbed, endpapers a bit stained, otherwise a very good, clean, unmarked set.         Historiae naturalis de serpentibus libri duo.

      - Heilbronn, F. J. Eckebrecht, 1758. Folio (37.7 x 22.6 cm). 55, [iii] pp.; 12 engraved plates. Contemporary (probably original) paper-covered boards. Short title in script on spine.l The complete part on snakes and "dragons" of John Jonston's famous "Historiae naturalis". This part, with fine illustrations of real snakes, as well as both a charming and bewildering variety of little dragons has always been one of the most popular parts. Perhaps that is why the German printer and publisher Frank Joseph Eckebrecht fully reprinted this work in 1758. Nine years later he also reprinted Jonston's book on fishes. 1758, of course is the year in which Linnaeus saw the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae published, a point in time when the existence of real dragons was much in doubt among serious zoologists. This may be the reason for Eckebrecht to shorten the title from the original "Historiae naturalis de serpentibus et draconibus". Linnaeus, however, based some of his new species on Jonston's descriptions and illustrations. Today, this edition, which was printed on much better, thicker paper, is much rarer than the earlier Frankfurt and Amsterdam "thin paper" editions. Uncut. Plate 8 bound after plate 9, otherwise the binder's instructions are followed. A very good, clean copy. Very rare. Nissen ZBI, 2135 (Amsterdam and Frankfurt editions). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Prospetto della Prima Machina eretta per Commando di Sua Eccellenza il Si. Principe Dono Lorenzo Colonna

1758 - Acquaforte e bulino, 1758. Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charles II decree of the 12 of May 1691, the Greats of Spain were obliged to take part to the cortege, which was then followed by two series of pyrotechnical shots and music, dances an

Mukhtasar Al-Adwiya Al-Mufrada + Buru’ Sa’a. TWO VOLUMES IN ONE.

      - 68 pp., / 8 pp., 23 lines to the page, original hard boards, damaged cover, marginal notes, titles and headings in red, some worming, (no date). Ibn al-Bitar Dhiya al-Din al-Malaqi (1197-1248) was one of the greatest scientists of Muslim Spain and was the greatest botanist and pharmacist of the Middle Ages. He was born in the Spanish city of Malaqa (Malaga) towards the end of the twelfth century. He learned botany from Abu al-Abbas al-Nabati, a learned botanist, with whom he started collecting plants in and around Spain. In 1219 he left Spain on a plant-collecting expedition and travelled along the northern coast of Africa as far as Asia Minor. The exact modes of his travel (whether by land or sea) are not known, but the major stations he visited include Bouaghia, Constantine, Tunis, Tripoli, Barqa and Adalia. After 1224, he entered the service of al-kamil, the Egyptian Governor, and was appointed chief herbalist. In 1227, al-Kamil extended his domination to Damascus, and Ibn al-Bitar accompanied him there which provided him an opportunity to collect plants form stations located there. He died in Damascus in 1248. Ibn Bitar’s major contribution, kitab al-Adwiya al-Mufrada, is one of the greatest botanical compilations dealing with up to the sixteenth century and is a systematic work that embodies earlier works, with due criticism, and adds a great part of original contribution. The encyclopaedia comprises some 1, 400 different items, largely medicinal plants and vegetables, of which about 200 plants were not known earlier. The book refers to the work of some 150 authors mostly Arab, and it also quotes about 20 early Greek scientists. It was translated into Latin and published in 1758. His second monumental treatise kitab al-Mughni fi al-Adwiya al-Mufrada is an encyclopaedia of medicine. The drugs are listed in accordance with their therapeutical value. Thus, its 20 different chapters deal with the plants bearing significance to diseases of head, ear, eye, etc. on surgical issues, he frequently quoted the famous Muslim surgeon, Abdul Qasim Zahrawi. Besides Arabic, Bitar, had given the Greek and Latin names of the plants, thus facilitating transfer of knowledge. Ibn Bitar’s contributions are characterized by observation, analysis and classification and have exerted a profound influence on was translated/ published late in the western languages as mentioned above, yet many scientists had earlier studied various parts of the book and made several references to it. Eccellente esemplare Etching, circa 1758, without signature. Example in the first state of two. A magnificent impression, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with unidentidied watermark, with full margins, in excellent condition. The work belongs to the famous collection of Raccolta di Teste numero trenta dipinte dal sig. Gio. Batta Tiepolo Pittore Veneto al serviggio di S. M. C. Morto in Madrid l’anno 1770 Incise da Gio. Domenico suo Figlio. It was started by Domenico in 1757, as documented by letters of Anton Maria Zanetti. The sheets were known only to his closest friends by Tiepolo and were published only in the period after the return of the author from Madrid (1770), when the series was completed and published between 1773 and 1774. The engraved portraits by Tiepolo depicting philosophers, sages Levantines, bearded and characters are masterfully created with a style that moves effortlessly from that of Rembrandt than that of Castiglione.       First Edition. Full Calf blond marbled time. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. Head cap threadbare. Upper joint split in cap and head. 2 corners bumped. We shall see what we do in terms of wolves or dogs without masters, plague, games at fairs and markets, latrines ... Compared to the famous treatise police Delamare, whose author speaks in his preface, this Treaty has a practical aim, which is why he was put in dictionary form, it contains not only all the edicts relating to a matter but also valuable feedback to the author.

Large and important map of the Duchy of Ferrara, which also covers part of the Bologna and Modena' area, in the third and final edition, with the dedication to Francis II (1792-1806). Third state of the map, engraved by Andrea Bolzoni was published for the first time in 1758, then in 1782 and finally in 1800. Intersting from the hydrographic interest, the map is also interesting because for the first time the settlement and the road network of the Ferrara are highlighted. At the end of the description, in the cartouche with the title, the editor' signature is erased. Copper engraving, mounted on canvas, some dampstains, otherwise in good condition.         Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia, Carolina, Georgiaand part of Florida. Carte de la Louisiane, Maryland, Virginie, Caroline, Georgie avec une Partie de la Floride.

Americas: Amsterdam. Covens et Mortier Dated 1758 in title. Copper engraved map of the South Eastern states of America from Covens & Mortier's " Nieuwe Atlas, Inhoudennde vier Gedeeltens der Waereld.. " Original full wash colour; verso blank. Original map by Covens & Mortier, based upon the D'Anville's map of the North America published in 1755, showing Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia, Carolina, Georgia and part of Florida. D'Anville's map is significantly different than Mitchell's map of 1755. Most notably, the course of the Ohio River is substantially different than Mitchell's map, as are the River Cherakis and River Ouabache, two of its primary tributaries. The course of the Missouri River and the Appalachicola River is also noticeably different. Cummings notes that the map shows the Indian Settlements between the Appalachians and the Mississippi River, unlike the Mitchell. It also shows the Grenville Line in North Carolina, but not the division between North & South Carolina. The treatment of the east coast from St. Augustine to Delaware Bay is very detailed, as is the treatment of the Chesapeake, Maryland and Virginia. Dark impression; bright full wash colour; printed on heavy paper; 2 short tears to upper blank margin outside platemark ,near centre fold, repaired to verso; old red crayon numbers to verso. Covens & Mortier as a firm existed between 1721-1778, taking over the business of Pierrre Mortier. Johannes / Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier were brothers- in- law following the former's marriage to Mortier's sister Agatha in 1721, when they also formally went in to partnership. Under the Covens and Mortier imprint, Cornelius and Jean republished the works of the great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, & De Wit. The firm would become one of the most prolific Dutch publishing concerns of the 18th century. The company would pass down through the Covens family as Mortier had no children, changing the name to Covens & Zoon until Pieter Mortier IV a great grandson of the original founder joined the firm and saw the name restored to Mortier Covens & Zoon. ( See Koeman I p45). Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697-1782), one of the leading cartographers of the 18th century, and France's royal geographer and cartographer at the end of the reign of Louis XV publishing under the patronage of the Duke of Orleans, brother to the king. Both a geographer and cartographer, he greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography are characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, now regarded as especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such. Compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked relatively empty. He was the publisher of over 200 individual maps, as well as several atlases, including the Atlas General which corrected the errors of the maps of de L'Isle and Sanson. From 1737 onwards he published collections of maps under the title Atlas Generale which went through numerous expanding editions in various languages; English editions were later printed by Robert Sayer, Laurie and Whittle, and others well into the next century. During his whole life he never travelled outside Paris but he built up a vast collection of cartographic material which eventually was passed to the Bibliotheque Nationale. His work is known for its beauty as well as its scientific accuracy. Koeman I: C&M 8:113; Cumming 316 (curiously referencing Sepp as the maker--Sepp is listed as the engraver in the lower left corner).         Legal File from the Villa de San Fernando (Now San Antonio).

1758 - Manuscript Documenting a Complicated 1758 Divorce Case in Spanish Texas [Manuscript]. [Texas]. [San Antonio]. [Early Legal File from the Villa de San Fernando (Now San Antonio, Texas)]. [San Antonio, September 1758]. [50] pp. Folio (12-1/2 x 8-1/2"). Early limp calf folder with thong tie, faint unrelated title to front cover. A few minor scuffs, light rubbing to extremities, text block detached. Text in neat secretarial hand to rectos and versos of all but final leaf, additional 4-page document, 8" x 6," affixed to end of text block. Light toning to leaves, minor worming in a few places. * Established in 1731, Villa de San Fernando de Bexar (now San Antonio) was the first civil settlement in present-day Texas (following a handful of presidios and missions). Offered here is a lengthy case file relating to a resident named Pedro Conitrillo (or Oconitrillo), who had been separated from a wife in Saltillo for seven or eight years and sought a divorce. The first 6 pages are testimony signed by Jose Manuel de Santa Maria, the civil authority at Villa de San Fernando, on 25 August 1758. This is followed by a long response signed by Father Jose Guadalupe at the nearby Mission de San Juan Capistrano, and shorter responses by 4 other priests at nearby missions in September 1758, all debating whether this was a civil or religious case, and whether divorce or any criminal proceedings were in order. One of the opinions is offered by Fray Francisco Aparicio of Mision San Antonio, later famous as the Alamo. Appended are two documents signed by Alcalde Joseph Curbelo, Alberto Lopez and other civil authorities. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
