      1758. An Extraordinary Copy of"One of the Most Splendid Editions" of HomerHOMER. [Works in Greek] Tes Ton Homerou Illiadae… [et] Tes Tou Homerou Odysseias… [Transliterated from the Greek]. Rurus, Quid Virtus, et Quid Sapientia Possit, Util Proposuit Nobis Exemplar Ulyssem. Glasguae: In Aedibus Academicis, Excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis Academieae Typographi, 1756-58.First edition thus, a variant unrecorded by Gaskell. Four tomes in two folio volumes (12 7/8 x 8 in; 200 x 325 mm). [2, blank], 312; 336, [2, blank]; [2, blank], 297, [1]; 336, [2, blank] pp on fine laid paper watermarked Pro Patria. Separate title pages. Lacks the general title ("Rarely found" - Gaskell), the final blank to book three, and, as usual, the half titles, otherwise complete.Contemporary full diced brown calf. Wide gilt tooled borders. Five gilt stamped raised bands. Gilt lettered and elaborately gilt decorated and ornamented compartments. Gilt rolled edges. Marbled endpapers. Minor paper flaw, not affecting text, to leaf 212 in volume one. With the bookplates of William Danby (and his dated signature), Lytton Strachey, and Roger Senhouse to the front paste down endpapers to both volumes. Mild rubbing at joints. A bit of pale foxing to a handful of leaves, otherwise a crisp, clean, fine copy, beautifully bound, extraordinary and scarce in this condition. In a cloth slipcase. "'One of the most splendid editions of Homer ever delivered to the world' says Harwood, 'and I am informed that its accuracy is equal to its magnificence.' The reader, on perusing the preface, will see with what pains this sumptuous work was executed; each sheet, before it was finally committed to the press, was six times corrected by various literary men" (Dibdin)."Edited by [University of Glasgow] Professors James Moor and George Muirhead, whose prefaces are dated Ides November 1756 (Illiad) and Ides May 1758 (Odyssey). Awarded the Silver Medals of the Select Society of Edinburgh in 1756 and 1757" (Gaskell).The copy at Cambridge appears to be that submitted for judgment as an example of fine typography. Within it is a manuscript note stating: "We are of the opinion this edition of Homer's Odyssey is entitled to the prize for the best printed & most correct Greek Book," apparently signed by two of the judges.This copy is on smaller paper than the two issues noted by Gaskell, yet "it is clear that variant issues were the rule rather than the exception at the Foulis Press" (Gaskell, p. 19)."Robert Foulis (1707-1776) and Andrew Foulis (1712-1775) were at the forefront of the print trade in 18th century Glasgow and they contributed greatly to the development of Enlightenment print culture in the city…The editions of the classics produced by the Foulis brothers were renowned for their textual accuracy and the beauty of their type. Their greatest publication achievement is said to be that of a folio edition of Homer (1756-58) which contemporaries recognised as a masterpiece of literary and typographical accuracy" (Young, John R. The Glasgow Story).Based upon Danby's dated signature, the binding is c. 1772, and is quite possibly by Roger Payne: The large stemmed flower tool, the palm fronds, the roll on the edges, and the oak leaf are the same as those used by Payne during his middle and late period. However, other tools used are not found on Payne's authenticated bindings.This copy has marvelous provenance. Previously owned by William Danby (1752-1833), the extravagantly wealthy, accomplished scholar and writer of Thoughts, Chiefly on Serious Subjects (1821), Ideas and Realities, or, Thoughts on Various Subjects (1827), Extracts from and observations on Cicero's dialogues De senectute and De amicitia, and a translation of his Somnium Scipionis, with notes (1829), and Thoughts on Various Subjects (1831); Bloomsbury member, biographer and literary critic Lytton Strachey (1880-1932); and publisher Roger Senhouse (1899-1970), head of Secker & Warburg. In The Letters of Lytton Strachey edited by Paul Levy (2005), it is revealed that Strachey and Senhouse had a torrid, long-term sado-masochistic love affair. With Senhouse the sadist, the two would enact an erotic recreation of Christ's crucifixtion, Strachey blissfully absorbing the wounds. (Levy, Paul. Bloomsbury's Final Secret, in the Telegraph, March 14, 2005). Gaskell 319. ESTC T090250. Dibdin I, p. 385. Rothchild 2674.

        A General Map of the Middle British Colonies in America ... Corrected and Improved with the Addition of the Line of Forts on the Back Settlemetns

      London: Sold by R. Sayer ... & T. Jefferys ..., 1758. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring. Inset map of the Ohio River, tables of distance, numerous printed notes relating to Indian tribes and geography. 20 3/8 x 26 1/2 inches. One of the most important maps of the British colonies done prior to Independence. Lewis Evans' map, titled "A General Map of the Middle British Colonies in America," shows the east coast of North America from Montreal and New England to the northern border of North Carolina, and also includes the Ohio valley in the west. The Evans map appeared in 1755, the same year as John Mitchell's famous map, with Evans drawing from his own original surveys, as well as Fry and Jefferson's 1753 map of Virginia. Evans's map acknowledges French claims to all lands northwest of St. Lawrence Fort, resulting in criticism from New York. Despite the controversy, Evans's work was influential (there were eighteen editions and piracies issued between 1755 and 1814), and was famously used by General Braddock during the French and Indian War. "By 1758 Kitchin's plate seems to have passed into the possession of Thomas Jefferys, the famous map publisher of Charing Cross, for in that year we find the map re- issued with exactly the same title as Kitchin's but with an alteration in the imprint ... Very little difference is to be observed between the issues of 1756 and 1758, but a number of new Forts on the back settlements are added in the latter ... Fort du Quesne, which was marked simply F. du Quesne' in the 1756 plate, is now lettered 'Ft. du Quesne Destroy'd 1758 now called Pittsburg'" (Stevens). This correction to this issue makes this map the earliest map to name Pittsburgh. A rare issue of a desirable map of colonial America. Stevens and Tree 30b; Klinefelter, "Lewis Evans and his Maps" in Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, vol. 61, no. 7 (1971), p. 54; Stevens, Lewis Evans and His Map (London: 1905) III; McCorkle 758.3;

        Ragionamento sopra il fatto avvenuto in Bergemoletto, in cui tre donne, sepolte fra le rovine della stalla per la caduta d'una gran mole di neve, sono state trovate vive dopo trentasette giorni. -

      Torino, Stamperia Reale, 1758.In-4. Legatura del primo ?800 in cartonatura. Vignetta sul frontespizio che mostra la stalla sommersa dalla neve, 2 testatine, una con il ritratto in ovale di Re Carlo Emanuele a cui l'opera è dedicata, 2 graziosi capilettera istoriati, e due tavole ripiegate inc. in rame. (8), 165, (1) pp.; buon esemplare in barbe; lieve uniforme ossidazione della carta. Prima edizione. Per una valanga che il 19 marzo 1755 distrusse Bergemoletto nella valle Stura in Piemonte, tre donne ?in ristrettissimo spazio, con pochissimo latte, in mezzo a fetore intollerabile, coll'aria non rinnovata, vissero l'indicato tempo?. L?avvenimento suscitò molta impressione e questa relazione dello stimato medico torinese Somis è di notevole interesse per contenere la prima dettagliata descrizione di quello che è oggi noto come disturbo da stress post-traumatico. De Renzi, Storia della medicina in Italia, V, 755. Blake 426. Wellcome V, 148. First edition. This account about three women who survived 37 days trapped in a very small stable buried by an avalanche which destroyed their village in Piedmont, is a very early contribution to what is now known as post-traumatic stress disorder: «?no other publication has been located, to date, approaching the depth and detail of Somis» (Brenda Parry-Jones, Post-traumatic stress disorder: supportive evidence from an eighteenth century natural disaster, Cambridge Univ. Press, 2009). Vignette on title, head-piece with portrait, and 2 engr. folding plates. Light toning of the paper but a good uncut copy bound in early 19th century boards.

        Veduta del Tempio della Fortuna Virile

      Acquaforte firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Della serie ?Vedute di Roma?. Esemplare nel rarissimo primo stato di sette, prima dell?indirizzo dell?editore Bouchard e Gravier e dei ritocchi a bulino. Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva con la tipica filigrana ?cerchio e giglio?(Hind 1), con margini, consueta piega centrale verticale, nel complesso in ottimo stato di conservazione. Opera molto rara in questa tiratura. Giovanni Battista Piranesi nasce a Mogliano Veneto o Mogliano di Mestre, vicino Venezia, nel 1720 e muore a Roma nel 1778. Si può senza dubbio considerare come il più notevole incisore del secolo, ed il maggiore artista in questa materia nel periodo che va da Rembrandt a Goya. La sua opera incisa consta di oltre 1000 lavori, realizzati dal 1743 (anno della pubblicazione della prima opera), e l?anno della sua morte. La sua produzione si può dividere in più periodi: un primo nel quale si dedica ai lavori di architettura fantastica nel quale realizza tra l?altro Prima Parte di Architetture, e Prospettive inventate ed incise da Gio. Batta Piranesi Architetto Veneziano dedicate al Sig. Nicola Giobbe (1743), i celebri Grotteschi (1750), oltre al suo capolavoro assoluto, le Carceri d?invenzione, pubblicate dal suo editore Bouchard nel 1750. Nel periodo successivo rivolge la sua attenzione sui lavori di archeologia pubblicando testi come : Trofei di Ottaviano Augusto (1753), Le Rovine del Castello dell?Acqua Giulia (1761), Le Lapidi Capitoline (1762), Il Campo Marzio dell?Antica Roma, Opera di G. B. Piranesi socio della reale società degli antiquari di Londra (1762), e dei lavori sul Lago di Albano, su Cori e Paestum, ma che raggiungono il massimo con Le Antichità Romane, opera in quattro volumi che unisce ai lavori di archeologia, quelli straordinari di fantasia. Un ultimo periodo caratterizza il Piranesi nel suo aspetto più commerciale di editore, quando già famosissimo realizza oltre duecento lastre decorative di antichità, raccolte nell?opera Diverse maniere d?adornare i cammini (1769) e Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal Cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi (1778). Inoltre, nel corso di tutta la sua carriera artistica, il Piranesi disegna, incide e compone quella che oggi risulta sicuramente la sua opera più imponente e magistrale, le celebri Vedute di Roma. Etching, circa 1758, signed on plate at lower right. From the series "Views of Rome". Example belonging to the extremely rare first state out of seven, before the address of the editor Bouchard & Gravier and finishing touches (engravings) were added. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper with customary "circle and fleur-de-lis" (Hind1) watermark, with margins, usual vertical central fold, overall in very good conditions. The example of the print here presented is a rare collector's item. Giovanni Battista Piranesi was born at Mogliano Veneto or Mogliano di Mestre, near Venice, in 1720 and died in the whereabouts of Rome in 1778. Undoubtedly he can be thought of as being the most important engraver of his century and the leading artist in this field in the period going from Rembrandt to Goya. His catalogue comprises more than one thousand engravings, created between 1743 (the year in which his first work was published), and the year of his death. His output can be divided into distinct periods. In the first of these he devoted himself to depictions of imaginary architectures among which are Prima Parte di Architetture e Prospettive inventate ed incise da Gio. Batta Piranesi Architetto Veneziano dedicate al Sig. Nicola Giobbe [First Part of Architectures and Perspectives created and engraved by Gio. Battista Piranesi Venetian Architect dedicated to Mr. Nicola Giobbe] (1743), the famed Grotteschi [Grotesques] (1750) and, finally, his absolute masterpiece, the Carceri d'invenzione [Imaginary prisons] published by his editor Bouchard in 1750. In the following period he focused his attention on archaeology publishing works related to this topic, such as the Trofei di Ottaviano Augusto [Trophies of Octavian Augustus] (1753), Le Rovine del Castello dell'Acqua Giulia [The ruins of the Castle of Acqua Giulia...] (1761), Le Lapidi Capitoline [The Capitol Memorial Plaques] (1762), Il Campo Marzio dell'Antica Roma, Opera di G. B. Piranesi socio della reale società degli antiquari di Londra [The Campus Martius of Ancient Rome, Work by G.B. Piranesi, member of the Royal Antiquary Society of London] (1762), together with prints depicting the Lake of Albano and the towns of Cori and Paestum. His most important work in this period is the Le Antichità Romane [The Roman Antiquities], in four volumes where archaeological documentation can be seen together with remarkable achievements of the artist's imagination. Finally, in the third and last period, Piranesi's activities were characterised, as an editor, by a more commercial flavour. By this time he was already very famous and created over two hundred decorative plates depicting antiquities collected in his works Diverse maniere d'adornare i cammini [Various manners of decorating paths...] (1769) and Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal. Cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi [Vases, chandeliers, funeral columns, sarcophaguses, tripods, oil lamps and ancient adornments drawn and engraved by the Cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi] (1778). Furthermore, during the length of his whole artistic career, Piranesi drew, engraved and composed his most important and significant work of art, the renowned Vedute di Roma [Views of Rome], in which his professional contentment in being an architect together with a personal pride in his Venetian origins can be witnessed in the title-page, signed as ?Giovan Battista Piranesi Architetto Veneziano" ["Giovan Battista Piranesi Venetian Architect"]. Later antique style quarter calf and brown cloth backed boards with gilt lettered leather title-piece within raised bands at spine; binding firm, flat and tight with just some moderate wear at the joints and some rubbing to the spine label, which is also faded; contents in very good shape: clean and fresh with just a moderate amount of dust dulling at the title-page; endpapers and text not showing any pen-marks, damp stains or worming; also, not from a library so no such stamps or labels; size: 8vo (210mm x 140mm); collation: pp. xxiii, [1], 269, [1, errata], [2, ads.] and 7 fold-out plates. Note: ESTC T106786 collates just three plates whereas this copy has seven. Also note: only 500 copies printed. Written when Lyons was only 19-years-old. Later, in 1773, he was chosen to be the astronomer for the North Pole voyage led by Constantine Phipps. Very rare.

        Le Droit des Gens, ou Principes de la Loi Naturelle Appliqués à la conduite & aux affaires des nations & des souverains.

      26,5x21,5 cm. XXVI S., 25 n.n. S. table, 541 S.; Vortitel, Titel, 16 n.n. S. table, 375 S., 1 S. fautes. Halblederband der Zeit mit rotem goldgeprägtem Rückenschild und wenig Rückenvergoldung. 2 Teile in 1 Band. Erste Ausgabe. - Erschien auf Kosten des Verfassers, gedruckt von Abraham Droz in Neuchâtel. - Noch im gleichen Jahr wurde das Buch in Leiden und Den Haag nachgedruckt. Vattels Hauptwerk hatte massgeblichen Einfluss auf die Diplomatie und die rechtlichen Verhältnisse zwischen den Staaten. Einer der grossen Texte der Aufklärung, geschrieben von einem Neuenburger, der nach seinen Studien in Genf und Basel am Hof von Dresden arbeitet. Als Gesandter Sachsens wird er nach Bern berufen, wo er seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit als Mitarbeiter des 'Journal Helvetique' beginnt und gleichzeitig an seinem Völkerrecht arbeitet. Ursprünglich wollte Vattel das Werk in Holland erscheinen lassen, da er wenig von der Qualität der Schweizer Verleger hielt. Die Ausgabe erschien dann aber doch in seiner Vaterstadt in einer Auflage von 1200 Exemplaren. Zur Verschleierung der Herkunft des Buches bestand eigentlich kein Grund, umso mehr, als sich der Verfasser mit vollem Namen auf dem Titel zu erkennen gibt. Die Vermutung liegt nahe, dass es sich dabei eher um ein Hommage an England als das völkerrechtlich aufgeklärteste Land seiner Zeit handelt. (s. L'édition neuchâteloise au siècle des Lumières, S. 48ff). - Sehr schönes, breitrandiges und fleckenloses Exemplar in typischen Berner Einband der Zeit. - Mit handschriftlichem Besitzvermerk von Philippe Godet, Neuenburger Schriftsteller, datiert Neuchàtel 24. Mai 1889. [4 Warenabbildungen bei]

        Fugitive Pieces in Verse and Prose

      [Twickenham]: Strawberry Hill Press. 1758. First Edition. Hardcover. Contemporary full calf with five raised bands on spine, spine lable bearing gilt titles and elaborate gilt decoration to rest of spine, boards with gilt tooled border and inside gilt dentelles, upper joint cracked and upper board held on just two cords, lower joint started from bottom edge, aeg, marbled endpapers with small bookplate on front pastedown, title page with vignette, contents clean and bright. , Printed in an edition of 200 copies, this is one of the earlier productions of Walpole's press at Strawberry Hill, which he founded in 1757. This copy is in the first state identified by Hazen but lacks the inserted note after p.216 (Hazen 4), as Walpole's own copy lacks this note Hazen states that its presence or absence cannot be used to identify a seperate state of the first edition. Walpole dedicates the book to his cousin Henry Seymour Conway (1719-1795). Conway was an army officer and politician who had a remarkably close relationship with Horace Walpole. They attended Eton together and maintained a close friendship throughout their lives. The closeness of that friendship, and Conway's alleged sexual ambiguity, would lead contemporaries to insinuate a sexual element to their relationship. , 8vo 8" - 9" tall, [ii] iii-vi [1] 2-219 [1] pp .

Rödbrunt pappbd med mörkt blå titeletikett (Johanna Röjgård). Gamla marmorerade snitt. Bra ex.. Nissen Die zoologische Buchillustration 3643. Planscherna signerade av Jac. Andr. Fridrich och Fr. Schaur.

Armorial bookplate on front fixed endpaper with text "Ex Libris Brölemann" and in ink at lower edge "2461." In an old hand on the verso of the front free endpaper: De La Farelle. The bookplate is that of Henry-Auguste Brölemann (1775-1869) and his son Arthur Brölemann (1826-1904). Whether this edition or the 188-page edition printed in Hamburg by Chretien Herold in the same year is the true first edition has not been established.         A Discourse Concerning the Residual Analysis; A New Branch of the Albebraic Art, Of very extensive Use, both in Pure Mathematics and Natural Philosophy

      London: Printed for J. Nourse, 1758 First edition. Recent quarter crimson morocco over marbled boards, gilt spine, new endpapers. . Quarto. Occasional light foxing. A very good copy. John Landen (1719-1790) was the most notable British mathematician in the second half of the eighteenth century. At the time when British mathematics was held back by inadequate notation, an unfortunate consequence of the Newton-Leibniz dispute, he was the only Englishman to score major advances in mathematics and in the art of computation. In this book and the succeeding Residual Analysis, Book I (1764), he attempted to replace the fluxional calculus with an analytic method "founded entirely on the anciently received principles of algebra." According to Lacroix, this was the first attempt to reduce the infinitesimal calculus to "purely mathematical notions" (Oxford DNB). Landen's writings served as the starting point for investigations by Euler, Lagrange, and Legendre. He also developed the theorem known by his name for expressing the length of a hyperbolic arc in terms of the lengths of arcs in two ellipses

      acad. tryckeriet, 1758. 8:o. (12),144,(5) s. Resebeskrivningen utgavs i faksimil 1973
