As a commercial partner with a firm in St. Petersburg, he traveled to Persia by way of the Caspian Sea in 1743. He recorded the events of his adventure as well as important historical events in Persia such as the reign of Shah Sultan Hussein, the invasion of Afghans, reign of Sultan Mir Mahmud, rise of Nadir Kouli, and the reign of Adil Shah. However, Hanway's focus of this work was to describe a history of English commerce in the Caspian Sea area from 1553 to 1743. Hanway describes in great detail being attacked by pirates and struggling with sickness and fever. This charming set is filled with incredible full-page engravings, title vignettes, and detailed, folding maps. Illustrations depict: · The arsenal at Berlin · A Pyramid of Heads · Theatre at Berlin · Portrait of the King of Prussia · Stadt House in Amsterdam · Portrait of Prince of Orange · Hussein delivering his Diadem · Portrait of Nadir Shah · And maps of the Caspian Sea and Persia. RENARD, Louis (1678/9-1746)
Amsterdam: Reinier and Josu Ottens, 1754. Amsterdam: Reinier and Josué Ottens, 1754. 2 volumes in one, folio. (17 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches). Title printed in red and black, engraved arms of George II of England on dedication. 100 engraved plates after Samuel Fallours (one folding, each showing two or more subjects). Uncut. Modern vellum, spine with raised bands, original morocco lettering piece One of the rarest and most desirable works of natural history, containing plates of marine life from the East Indies, at the time virtually unknown to Europe. This extraordinary work purports to show marine life from the East Indies at a time when the natural wildlife of that area was virtually unknown in Europe. The work was first published in 1719 in an edition of only 100 copies. Following Renard's death, the Ottens publishing firm purchased approximately thirty unbound copies of the first edition, as well as the original copperplates, from Renard's estate. They printed approximately 70 additional sets, replaced the title-page with a new one, and added a preface by Aernout Vosmaer and a "Declaration" by Renard. This second edition, also limited to 100 copies. Unusually, the present set is uncoloured. Louis Renard (1678-1746) was a French Huguenot refugee who became a successful book seller and publisher based in Amsterdam, as well as a spy for the British Crown. The plates were engraved after drawings by Samuel Fallours, brought back to Amsterdam from Amboina in the East Indies by Frederik Julius Coyett, son of the Governor Baltazar Coyett. Fallours began his career as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tutini, Camillo.
Neapel, Raffaele Gessari, 1754. 4to. 3 parts in one vol. (8), 301, (13); (4), 40; 8, 84 pp. With engr. title page, 29 small and 9 large armorial woodcuts in the text (two of the latter on half-titles) as well as numerous initials. 19th-c. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to spine. Second edition, first published in 1644: the history of the Neapolitan "seggi" (seats), i.e., municipal wards or decentralized, neighborhood-based political organizations. "Who one was in Naples was inextricably linked to where one was from. One's residence or affiliation within one of the city's five noble districts (seggio of Capuana, Montagna, Nido, Porto, or Portanova) or its lone popular district (seggio del popolo), as much as one's right of precedence in the order of march in parades and processions, reflected one's status or honor among fellow citizens and one's place in the local social and political structure" (Marino, Becoming Neapolitan, p. 3f.). As the seggi archives in the Archivio di Stato were destroyed during WWII, this text remains one of the principal contemporary accounts of the organization of the seggi. Both early editions being excessively rare, it was reprinted in 2005 by Paolo Piccolo. - Includes, with separate title-pages, "Sopplimento all' apologia del terminio" and "Della varieta della fortuna". The woodcuts show the arms of the various seggi as well as those of the noble families associated with them. - Variously browned throughout due to paper. LA SALLE Antoine de
à Genève [Auxerre]: S.n. First Edition. Rare. Absent the BN of France. Full Veu contemporary. Smooth back to the net. Parts of title and volume number of red and black. Fillets border on covers. Gilt edges. Some frictions. Antoine de La Salle (1754-1829), philosopher and scientist, was certainly one of the most interesting thinkers of his time, his ideas, sometimes whimsical and messy made him the leader of the physico-moral school. The share of physiognomy naturally has an important role in this theory. The Mechanics is both a classic treatise of physiognomy, and another to consider the relationship between the moral and body way from an educational perspective. Besides this, the Mechanics is also a treaty of understanding and logic, there are theories about the phonetics and linguistics, in short everything related to human, moral, intellectual and physical. The room had an eventful life, made many trips, visited America and Asia, studied the relationship between Buddhism and Christianity, wrote an unpublished history of China, and learned Arabic. Then, having left the Navy, he surveyed Europe, living in Spain and Italy before returning to settle in Paris where he devoted himself to philosophy and science. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Rare and important issue of the most important Portuguese newspaper of the time. The Gazeta was published once a week. It presented reports on national and international politics, economics, wars, diplomatic relations, domestic gossips and news of the court, other international and domestic affairs. Issues of this journal on the market are very scare, especially the ones published before the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755. This issue contains news, which had recently arrived from Bastia, concerning the rebellion in Corsica (Corse) against the Republic of Genoa. It refers, among others, that the death of the famous Corsican patriot leader "Gafforio" (referring to Ghjuvan Petru Gaffori (1704-1753) or in French Jean-Pierre Gaffory) provoked new waves of revolts. The journal describes the events, the naming of his 12 year son to succeed him, and the continuing war by the Corsicans commanders namely by "Giuliani". Extensive news (about 1 page) on this historically significant revolt which culminated the year after with the proclamation by Pasquale Paoli of one of the first modern republics, the Corsican Republic. Other accounts describe the visit of the Duchess of Parma to Genoa, the sumptuous reception and mask ball in her honor. The gazette also refers to a report by the Governor of Havana regarding a naval battle between a British and a Dutch force near the coast of Caracas, Venezuela. Other news include privateers action on the coast of Algiers, French resentments against the Dey of Algiers, and appointment of Francisco Grimani as Proveditor-General in Dalmatia. Contemporary tree calf, gilt-tooled margin on covers, elaborately gilt spine, red leather spine label, marbled end-leaves. Fine. CHOICE COPY. Second edition, first issued in 1733, this is a greatly enlarged edition of the first exhaustive treatise on the aurora borealis. Mairan attributed the phenomenon to an extension of the sun's atmosphere, which at times enveloped the earth and blended with our atmosphere. "Inquiry into the history and physics of the aurora borealis; the chapter on the relation between the aurora and the magnetic declination is of special interest." Wheeler Gift 382. There are many references to Newton, Cassini, Euler, and Descartes. The plates contain astronomical maps as well as sketches of the aurora at different times and locations. Jean Mairan, while basically a Cartesian, did incorporate some Newtonian ideas in his theories. The range of his interests, however, extended beyond mathematics and astronomy, encompassing meteorology, biology, and a range of other disciplines. He was a secretary of the Paris Academy of Sciences and belonged to the Royal Societies of London, Edinburgh, and Uppsala, the St. Petersburg Academy, and the Institute of Bologna. Van Rijne was born in the Netherlands, but spent most of his working life in London, where he specialised in producing engravings of scenes from the British and Dutch colonies.

Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 3 vols. (165 X 100 mm). [2], xxxix, 245, [4]; [2], 326, [4]; [2], vi, 332, [3] pp. With 15 folding engraved plates. Bound in contemporary French marbled calf, five raised bands on spine, compartments gold tooled, red edges, marbled endpapers A lovely copy. Van der Voort was "the first garden theorist of the Netherlands... Concerned with small country-house canal gardens, he advocated, like Dezallier dÂ’Argenville, simplicity of line and the subordination of art to nature, with trees, hedges, bosquets, and water forming the main components. A garden, he writes, should be adapted to the geographic conditions of the site and unity of design should be achieved by following the laws of proportion and optics. Dutch Régence in concept, his treatise also reflected rococo and picturesque elements, for he recommended that parts of the garden and its boundaries should be concealed from view and that ornaments should be placed in appropriate settings to evoke a certain mood or sentiment" (Dr. Florence Hopper, Oxford Companion to Gardens p. 579)."Besides a theoretical treatise, De la Court also gives much practical information on gardening. He discusses amply the cultivation of the pineapple, one of his favourite subjects. He grew these plants in quantities and kept them during the winter in heated glasshouse and in summer in the `tan frame.Â’" (Anglo-Dutch Gardening in the Age of William and Mary 129).The extensive information on greenhouses, contemporary cultivation of fruit, flowers, vegetables, herbs, trees and exoti … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIDEROT (Denis)
- Tchemerzine-Scheler II, 936. - Cioranescu 24097. in 12, de 3ff. 206pp. 6ff. de table, [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

According to Wilson Martins, "Os Jubilos da America . estão literariamente na ponta inicial de um arco cuja ponta final será O Uraguai - ambas as obras ligadas à história do nosso estabelecimento territorial e à fisionomia geográfica do Brasil" (História da inteligência brasileira I, 364). As Borba points out (Período colonial, p. 323), it is not only the individual contributors that make this an interesting volume. Jubilos is also the only publication of a Brazilian academy of this period in which we can see how the academy was founded and how it functioned, by reading the dedication, prologue, the letters to Sequeira e Sá, and the program. The work represents, too, a group effort by intellectuals characteristic of their era. Innocêncio believed that almost the entire edition of Jubilos had been sent to Brazil. Borba comments, "Today very few copies exist. Copies in good condition are rare."This volume was mostly the work of the mem … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abraham Lincoln
James Smithson, the great benefactor of America, was born in 1754, the illegitimate son of Hugh Smithson, the first Duke of Northumberland. Illegitimate children were not unusual among England’s 18th century nobility, but certain opportunities were closed to them; they could not become military officers or ministers of the Church of England, two careers aristocrats commonly pursued. However, the young man attended Pembroke College at Oxford University, and there became interested in the natural sciences. He became a mineralogist and chemist. If as a youth Smithson set out to establish his name respectably, he certainly succeeded, as his research, publications, and activities in science opened doors for him, and quickly gained him the regard of his peers. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society in London, a signal honor that made him part of the scientific elite. Meanwhile, Smithson inherited a substantial amount of land from his mother, and careful management of it brought him wealth. Smithson never married and had only one close relative, a nephew named Henry James Dickinson (who later changed his name to Hungerford). In his will, Smithson left his fortune of £100,000 to his nephew. In the event of Hungerford’s death, Smithson stipulated, the estate would pass his children - legitimate or illegitimate. But if his nephew died childless, he did “bequeath the whole of my property…to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an Establishment for the increase & diffusion of Knowledge among men.” … [Click Below for Full Description]
