ERASMUS [Desiderio Erasmo da Rotterdam]
Amsterdam: Jac a. Wetstein 1754 - Complete with index, autobiography and epitaph of Erasmus at Basel. Dedication to Frobenius. Recent full mottled leather with gilt date, and title to a burgundy band. The binding is spotless and without flaws. The book itself is clean and tidy throughout, with fractional darkening only. A lovely copy. Engraved frontispiece of Erasmus with three doctors. Erasmus expressed his views indirectly through the Colloquia, which had started as schoolboy dialogues but became a vehicle for commentary. For example, in the colloquy "Inquisitio de fide" (1522) a Catholic finds to his surprise that Lutherans accept all the dogmas of the faith, that is, the articles of the Apostles’ Creed. The implication is that bitter disputes like those over papal infallibility or Luther’s doctrine of predestination are differences over mere opinion, not over dogmas binding on all the faithful. Johann Heinrich Wettstein (1649–1726), had had an important printing and publishing business. From his office excellent editions of the classics were issued, as well as Gerard of Maastricht's edition of the Greek Testament. [1-10], 11-524 (iv) pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BLAIR, Rev. John (died 1782).
London: [privately printed], 1754. [Chronological Tables]. FIRST EDITION. Large folio (45 x 31cm), pp.[16], [34]. With 56 copper engraved tables, some extending over two leaves. Including an introduction and detailed indexes, as well as a formidable list of subscribers including the King and the Prince of Wales. In recent tan quarter calf with raised bands, gilt titles to burgundy label on spine and marbled boards.Tears to the base of plates 17, 18 and 19, near the binding and not affecting text. A few contemporary manuscript additions to the tables, scattered throughout. Very good overall. Beginning with Adam, here born 4004 years before Christ, the first four tables rush through 3200 years, sketching events from the Bible and the Heroic Age of Ancient Greece. Thereafter every year from 800 B.C. to 1753 is recorded in tabular form, with notable events, rulers and other important characters marked out against them. Inevitably, the 'History of the World' refers almost exclusively to Europe. Space is also provided for more information to be added by hand up to the year 1800 (not filled out in this case).

ZOCCHI, Giuseppe.
Florence Giuseppe Bouchard, 1754. Second edition. Folio (58 x 41.5 cm). Double-page engraved allegorical title page, engraved dedication, engraved map, 24 double-page etched and engraved plates numbered I-XXIV, engraved by Corsi, Franceschini, Gabuggiani, Gregori, Papini, Muller, Marieschi, Monaco, Pazzi Pfeffel, Seuter, Sgrilli, Vasi, after drawings by Zocchi. Contemporary red morocco gilt by Derome (ticket to title); small hole (50 mm) to blank outer margin outside plate plate mark of plate VII, tiny area of restoration to verso plate XXIII outside plate mark. A complete set of the finest pictorial record of the historical architecture of Florence in the XVIII century. In red morocco by Derome. Zocchi (1711-1767), a painter, draftsman, and etcher, was the protege of Gerini, who commissioned these prints and also paid for Zocchi's artistic education in Rome, Bologna, and Lombardy. Although he made easel and mural paintings, Zocchi's oeuvre is richest in drawings and prints. The present series was etched by a team of twelve artists after Zocchi's designs. The four most important squares are shown at times of great festivity, and are most likely the earliest views Zocchi made for this series. Other plates demonstrate various uses of the River Arno, the splendid bridges that cross it, and the great buildings along its shore. Jean-Baptiste BOUCHOTTE
- BOUCHOTTE Jean-Baptiste (1754-1840).

Print itself is in very good state. ".Illuminated hand coloured optical view of a large square in Vienna (Wenen). Beautifully coloured. The outlines and light sources of the buildings and windows are perforated (dots and figures). At the back of the print we see that the holes are covered with see-through paper. Some of the holes are coated with green, red and yellow paint. This gives the illusion of coloured lights when the print is held in front of a light source. Very neatly illuminated

MAIRAN (Jean-Jacques Dortous de)
Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1754, in-4, [12]-570-XXII pp, 17 planches, basane marbrée, dos à nerfs orné, 17 planches dépliantes gravées en taille-douce par Ph. Simonneau. Deuxième édition parisienne (la première parue en 1733), augmentée de deux planches et d'importants "éclaircissements" de l'auteur. Ce traité comporte une liste très complète des aurores qui furent observées jusqu'en 1751. "The chapter on the relation between the aurora and the magnetic declination is of special interest" (Wheeler Gift). Dortous de Mairan (1678-1771) attribua l'aurore boréale à une extension de l'atmosphère du soleil, alors qu'il s'agit plutôt d'une interaction électrique entre les particules chargées du vent solaire et la haute atmosphère. CAMBRIDGE, Richard Owen.
Printed for R. and J. Dodsley . and sold by M. Cooper., London 1754 - Sole edition. Another Horatian imitation, The Intruder takes as its source satire 'The Impertinent' (Book I, Number IX, earlier used by Johnson in the Poetaster). 'It is a skit describing the poet's being bothered by a talkative, pestiferous coxcomb while he is out walking. The broadest hints are of no avail in getting rid of the nuisance. Finally, however, a chance allusion to "the Sabbath of the Jews" as they are passing through Billingsgate leads the fishwives to take the coxcomb for an Israelite. While he is being severely belaboured by the denizens of the neighbourhood-for these were the days of the anti-Jew bill-his late victim makes his escape . The Monthly Review found in his handling of his model a nice moderation, neither flattening the humor by too strict an adherence to the original nor deviating from it so far as to obscure Horace's own plan' (Altick, pp. 123-4). Cambridge had published another imitation of Horace, A Dialogue between a Member of Parliament and his Servant (Book II, Satire 7), in 1752. 4to (260 × 200 mm), pp. 22, [2], with half-title and final advert leaf; ornamental rules to half-title, fleuron to title; half-title slightly spotted, otherwise clean; modern marbled boards.
