PRIOR (Matthew)
Aberdeen: Printed and Sold by F. Douglas and W. Murray, 1754. 12mo in 6s), 165 x 93 mms., pp. 194 [195 - 196 Contents]; vii [viii blank], [9] - 185 [186 blank, 187 - 188 Contents], contemporary cat's paw calf, morocco labels, gilt spines (faded); lacks numbering label on volume 1, boards sprung, some wear to extremities, but a good set. Samuel Johnson commented on his "occasional poems": "His occasional poems necessarily lost part of their value, as their occasions, being less remembered, raised less emotion. Some of them, however, are preserved by their inherent excellence. The burlesque of Boileau's Ode on Namur has, in some parts, such airiness and levity as will always procure it readers, even among those who cannot compare it with the original." The publishers in Glasgow seemed to have a greater appreciation for Prior's poetry than those elsewhere in Scotland: the Foulis Press published editions of his poetry in 1751, 1759, 1769, and 1771; and Urie published editions in 1744 AND 1750. There were editions in Edinburghin 1773, 1777, and 1784. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

James Smithson
1754. Brought over to the United States with the original bequest to found the Smithsonian Almost certainly the only handwritten inventory from Smithson’s own collection in private hands From the collection of, and notated by, William Jones Rhees, Chief Clerk and Chief Archivist of the Smithsonian throughout the Victorian era James Smithson, the great benefactor of America, was born in 1754, the illegitimate son of Hugh Smithson, the first Duke of Northumberland. Illegitimate children were not unusual among England’s 18th century nobility, but certain opportunities were closed to them; they could not become military officers or ministers of the Church of England, two careers aristocrats commonly pursued. However, the young man attended Pembroke College at Oxford University, and there became interested in the natural sciences. He became a mineralogist and chemist. In the mineralogy field, he spent many years traveling the world to obtain samples of minerals and meteorites, study the geography he traversed, and describe the mining and manufacturing processes he encountered. He gathered many of these samples into a collection he kept in a mahogany cabinet, carefully notating the items and their histories on small catalogue cards. The book The Lost World of James Smithson affirms that Smithson maintained a comprehensive mineral cabinet “of the crystalized produce of the earth”, and emphasizes the great importance this cabinet held for him. In the chemistry field, much of Smithson’s work was dedicated to studying the chemical composition of various compounds. He … [Click Below for Full Description]

(probably Martin Sichnit (1754-1804)) ca. 1785 298 x 446 mm (plate: 270 x 405 mm) Etching/engraving/watercolour (on the back in ink) Gezigt in Weenen; Vue de Vienne Close cut margins and fixed onto cardboard edges (probably for usage as a 'magic lantern'). Print itself is in very good state. Illuminated hand coloured optical view of a large square in Vienna (Wenen). Beautifully coloured. The outlines and light sources of the buildings and windows are perforated (dots and figures). At the back of the print we see that the holes are covered with see-through paper. Some of the holes are coated with green, red and yellow paint. This gives the illusion of coloured lights when the print is held in front of a light source. Very neatly illuminated

ERASMUS [Desiderio Erasmo da Rotterdam]
Amsterdam: Jac a. Wetstein 1754 - Complete with index, autobiography and epitaph of Erasmus at Basel. Dedication to Frobenius. Recent full mottled leather with gilt date, and title to a burgundy band. The binding is spotless and without flaws. The book itself is clean and tidy throughout, with fractional darkening only. A lovely copy. Engraved frontispiece of Erasmus with three doctors. Erasmus expressed his views indirectly through the Colloquia, which had started as schoolboy dialogues but became a vehicle for commentary. For example, in the colloquy "Inquisitio de fide" (1522) a Catholic finds to his surprise that Lutherans accept all the dogmas of the faith, that is, the articles of the Apostles’ Creed. The implication is that bitter disputes like those over papal infallibility or Luther’s doctrine of predestination are differences over mere opinion, not over dogmas binding on all the faithful. Johann Heinrich Wettstein (1649–1726), had had an important printing and publishing business. From his office excellent editions of the classics were issued, as well as Gerard of Maastricht's edition of the Greek Testament. [1-10], 11-524 (iv) pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BLAIR, Rev. John (died 1782).
London: [privately printed], 1754. [Chronological Tables]. FIRST EDITION. Large folio (45 x 31cm), pp.[16], [34]. With 56 copper engraved tables, some extending over two leaves. Including an introduction and detailed indexes, as well as a formidable list of subscribers including the King and the Prince of Wales. In recent tan quarter calf with raised bands, gilt titles to burgundy label on spine and marbled boards.Tears to the base of plates 17, 18 and 19, near the binding and not affecting text. A few contemporary manuscript additions to the tables, scattered throughout. Very good overall. Beginning with Adam, here born 4004 years before Christ, the first four tables rush through 3200 years, sketching events from the Bible and the Heroic Age of Ancient Greece. Thereafter every year from 800 B.C. to 1753 is recorded in tabular form, with notable events, rulers and other important characters marked out against them. Inevitably, the 'History of the World' refers almost exclusively to Europe. Space is also provided for more information to be added by hand up to the year 1800 (not filled out in this case).
