RUBIN DIEGO
In Milano, nella Regia Ducal Corte, per Giuseppe Richino Malatesta, 1754. Cm. 27; pp. (12) 88. 1756, vol. IX, pp. 261-265): "Al Sig. L'Autore dedica ampi capitoli a poesia, musica, satira e balli. Rara edizione originale. Cfr. Iccu. [Attributes: Har … [Click Below for Full Description]

Struve, B.G. ; Coler, J.C. ; Lilienthal, M.; Fischer, J.C.
apud Henr. Ludovicum Broenner, Francofurti et Lipsiae, fifth edition, 1754 - Contemporary half sheep, spine gilt, title in red and black with engraved vignette, marbled pastedown endpapers, all edges marbled, 8vo, 20 cm, [16], 17-23, [1], 988, [65] pp. One of the leading bibliographers of his time, Struve (1671-1738) served as librarian at the University of Jena and helped to inaugurate the genre of historia litteraria, which aimed to provide a chiefly historical account of select works in various subject fields, especially those considered useful in academic studies. First published in 1704, Struve's Introductio developed from a history into a true bibliography of scholarly learning as subsequent editors added to later editions footnotes containing new material and corrections. This 1754 edition was fully revised by J.C. Fischer and it or J.F. Jugler's edition are the most useful. In addition to discussions of scholarly literature, the Introductio includes much of bibliographic and bibliophilic interest, including a survey of literary societies, sections on libraries in Germany and throughout Europe, banned books, and the history of printing. Archer Taylor noted that "the section devoted to catalogues of private libraries has become almost a bibliography of them" and that "the best eighteenth-century account of library history is that written by J.G. Struve.it contains, especially in the editions by J.C. Fischer and J.F. Jugler, abundant references to institutional catalogues." September 12, 1754. Autographed signed note on laid paper, signed and dated by David Hume as "12th Sept 1754/David Hume", 7.25" x 2". Presented floated, matted, framed, and glazed with a 3.75" x 4.75" reproduction painting. Fully framed measuring 14.75" x 17". Faint creasing, with very light soiling, else near fine.A stunning presentation of a scarce signed autographed note by David Hume, written to his close personal friend and correspondent, William Mure, a Scottish lawyer and politician. Hume was a frequent visitor at Mure’s home Abby Hill near Holyrood. In this note, he laments being unable to visit as shown below in full:"I am sorry to be obliged to excuse myself to Mrs. Mure & you. The present Emptiness of the Town gives me the finest opportunity for Study; and not with standing all my purposes of seeing you, I am afraid I must delay it till another Season. Why are you not nearer the Town. To go backwards & forwards would almost consume a Week. I am Dear Sir Yours sincerely…12th Sept 1754 David Hume"Hume's philosophical beliefs are rooted in empiricism, skepticism and naturalism. He strove to create a total naturalistic science of man that stressed first, the psychological basis of human nature, and second, that passion rather than reason governs human behavior. Hume argued against the existence of innate ideas, positing that all human knowledge is ultimately founded solely in experience, and thus believed that genuine knowledge must either be directly traceable to objects perceived in experience, or result from abstract reasoning about … [Click Below for Full Description]

COMINALE CELESTINO.
Morelli,, Neapoli, 1754. L'opera risulta così suddivisa: Pars prima, in qua Newtoni de coloribus systema et propriis principiis geometrice evertitur et nova de coloribus theoria. demonstreatur; Pars secunda, in qua rejectis methodo, et philosophandi regulis newtonianis, totiusque sectae principiis indicatis. Pars tertia, in qua virium universi natura, origo, mensura, propagatia etc. enucleantur; Pars quarta in qua atronomiae newtonianae principia expedentur. [Click Below for Full Description]

Giuseppe VASI (Corleone, 27 Agosto 1710 - Roma, 16 Aprile 1782)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1754. [Click Below for Full Description]

JOBLOT, Louis (1645-1723)
Paris:: Chez Briasson, 1754-55., 1754. 2 volumes in 1 (containing 4 parts). 4to. xx, 38, 124; vi, 78, 27, [1] pp. 53 folding engraved plates, with half-title (1), second part title (2), volume two title (3), second part title (4), head and tail pieces, initial letters. Original full mottled calf, elaborate gilt tooled spine, dark red gilt-stamped spine label; joints starting at extremities, corners worn. Book-label of J.-J. Blaise, Librairie, Paris. Very good copy. Second Edition, but considerably enlarged over the first edition Descriptions et Usages de Plusieurs Nouveaux Microscopes, 1718. This new edition contains more plates and added entomological notes. The remarkable plates show several views of microscopes and related instrumentation and the life forms observed by them, including insects (fly, flea, lice, butterflies, etc.) and marine life, salt crystals, etc. The chief appeal of this edition is the remarkable assortment of beautiful plates featuring the microscopes themselves. Joblot records his observations of many sorts of things including herb soup, rhubarb, mushrooms, grains (rye, oats, Turkish wheat), red worms as found in wells, the water-bug (grasshopper-like). This is of one of the most desirable of eighteenth-century books on microscopy, valued for the lovely engravings devoted to Joblot's microscope, the first French microscopist. The 1718 edition was also the first separate treatise written on protozoology and or microorganisms. It contains the "first experiments ever made to disprove the theory" of spontaneous generation and the first to announce the re … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique print, titled: 'St. Janskerck.' - The Janskerk or St. John's Church is a former church in the Dutch city of Haarlem. Today it houses the North Holland Archives (Noord-Hollands archief). Handcoloured etching on hand laid paper. Description: This scarse plate originates from: 'Schrevelius,Theod. Beschrijving van Haarlem, Harlemias, of de eerste stichting der stad Haarlem; haar toenemen en vergrooten; zeldzaame avontuur in vrede, oorlog en belegeringen; harde beginzelen van de eerste reformatie enz.' tweede druk Haarlem by Johannes Marshorn 1754.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Romeyn de Hooghe ' after an anonymous artist. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque, painter, sculptor, engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was born in Amsterdam. He was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. The Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren (1735) was a well known emblem book and sourcebook for classical mythology and its iconography. According to Houbraken he was particularly good at inventive arrangements of subjects in engravings. He was also a gifted painter and painted large panels for the rooms of the mayor's office in Enkhuizen and a room in the estate of Mattthijs van den Broeck in Dubbeldam. Houbraken disapproved of his disso … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOBLOT, Louis.
Paris: Briasson. 1754-55. Large 4to. 2 vols bound in one. Contemporary half tan calf, marbled boards, gilt tools to spine, contrasting morocco lettering pieces; pp. xx + 38 + 124, vi + 78 + 27, engraved headpiece (repeated three times) depicting a scientist in his laboratory & 53 folding engraved plates; a few plates with discreet repairs, very good. Second edition, greatly enlarged, of the first French book on microscopy (1st ed.: 1718 with the title Descriptions and only 34 plates). Joblot (1645-1723), professor of mathematics at the Ecole nationale des Beaux-Arts, probably became interested in microscopy during the visit of Huygens and Hartsoeker to Paris in 1678 when they demonstrated microscopes brought from Holland. While Joblot's observations were largely limited to protozoa in the first edition, the second edition reflects his study of minerals, plant cross-sections, and insects, illustrated on the plates in the first volume. Joblot "introduced some improvements, including the use of stops (diaphragms) in compound microscopes to correct for chromatic aberration. Joblot designed the first porte loupe, a simple preparation microscope in which the lens is supported by a string of 'Musschenbroek nuts,' forming a ball-and-socket jointed arm."-D.S.B., VII, p. 110

ZOCCHI, Giuseppe.
Florence Giuseppe Bouchard, 1754. Second edition. Folio (58 x 41.5 cm). Double-page engraved allegorical title page, engraved dedication, engraved map, 24 double-page etched and engraved plates numbered I-XXIV, engraved by Corsi, Franceschini, Gabuggiani, Gregori, Papini, Muller, Marieschi, Monaco, Pazzi Pfeffel, Seuter, Sgrilli, Vasi, after drawings by Zocchi. A complete set of the finest pictorial record of the historical architecture of Florence in the XVIII century. In red morocco by Derome. Zocchi (1711-1767), a painter, draftsman, and etcher, was the protege of Gerini, who commissioned these prints and also paid for Zocchi's artistic education in Rome, Bologna, and Lombardy. Although he made easel and mural paintings, Zocchi's oeuvre is richest in drawings and prints. The present series was etched by a team of twelve artists after Zocchi's designs. The four most important squares are shown at times of great festivity, and are most likely the earliest views Zocchi made for this series. Other plates demonstrate various uses of the River Arno, the splendid bridges that cross it, and the great buildings along its shore. The series as a whole presents Florence in a wonderful light, as a city of beautiful architecture with a lively population: 'Consistently celebrative and accomplished, this collection shows a city striving to maintain a placid and prosperous appearance; Z … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schweiger 2,576 for the ed. of 1744; Graesse 4,280) (Details: Nice copy. Red morocco, first half 20th century. Back with 4 raised bands, with gilt fillets and lettering. Marbled boards and endpapers. Thick paper, wide margins, untrimmed. Fine engraved frontispiece and plates designed by Frans van Mieris junior, engraved by Cl. Duflos for Coustelier in 1744, and used again by Barbou for this edition. For an explanation of these mythological plates see the bibliography of Gordon, p. 244. Woodcut printer's mark on the title, depicting an old man who stands in the shade of a vine-entwined elmtree, symbolising the symbiotic relationship between scholar and publisher. The motto is enigmatic: 'Non solus', probably indicating the interdependency of publisher and scholar. Occasional engraved headpieces and woodcut initials. Includes also a tricolour bookmarker. At the end 30 pages filled with 'Variae Lectiones') (Condition: Some negligible wear to the corners; a hardly visible dent at the lower edge of the front board) (Note: The Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius was much admired in the age of Enlightenment.
