[Click Below for Full Description]

Ex-libris. Bellissimo e puro esemplare. WALLACE (Rev. Robert), JONCOURT (Elie de) traducteur
Londres [i.e. Paris], 1754. "A limited earth, a limited degree of fertility, and the continual increase of mankind: these are the determinants. Malthus had only to add the ratios!"(K. Smith, 'The Malthusian controversy', p. 22). (Kress, 5408. Einaudi, n°5956. Higgs, 871). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Tutini, Camillo.
Neapel, Raffaele Gessari, 1754. 4to. 3 parts in one vol. (8), 301, (13); (4), 40; 8, 84 pp. With engr. title page, 29 small and 9 large armorial woodcuts in the text (two of the latter on half-titles) as well as numerous initials. 19th-c. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to spine. Second edition, first published in 1644: the history of the Neapolitan "seggi" (seats), i.e., municipal wards or decentralized, neighborhood-based political organizations. "Who one was in Naples was inextricably linked to where one was from. One's residence or affiliation within one of the city's five noble districts (seggio of Capuana, Montagna, Nido, Porto, or Portanova) or its lone popular district (seggio del popolo), as much as one's right of precedence in the order of march in parades and processions, reflected one's status or honor among fellow citizens and one's place in the local social and political structure" (Marino, Becoming Neapolitan, p. 3f.). As the seggi archives in the Archivio di Stato were destroyed during WWII, this text remains one of the principal contemporary accounts of the organization of the seggi. Both early editions being excessively rare, it was reprinted in 2005 by Paolo Piccolo. - Includes, with separate title-pages, "Sopplimento all' apologia del terminio" and "Della varieta della fortuna". The woodcuts show the arms of the various seggi as well as those of the noble families associated with them. - Variously browned throughout due to paper. BOWLES, John
Printed for J. Bowles in St Paul's Church Yard & John Bowles & Son, at the Black Horse in Cornhill, 1754 - Ranelagh Gardens Ranelagh Gardens was one of several pleasure gardens in London, and opened in 1741. Its principal attraction was a heated rotunda designed by William Jones, modelled on the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The print shows the central fireplace with revellers eating their breakfast around it, and the dais holding musicians to the left with a large organ. The rotunda helped make Ranelagh more popular than its rival in Vauxhall, which had no indoor concert area. Ranelagh also had a better reputation, because the entry fee was higher at two shillings and sixpence, attracting a smarter clientele. The Gardens often hosted famous visiting musicians, including the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1764. Image: 255 by 398mm (10 by 15.75 inches). Sheet: 376 by 545mm (14.75 by 21.5 inches). WALLACE, Robert
À Londres, 1754. In-8° piccolo (16,5 x 10), pp. (4)+II+II+292. Leg. coeva in piena pelle marmorizzata, dorsetto ornato a piccoli ferri con motivi floreali, tassello rosso per il titolo in oro, tagli rossi. Ottimo esemplare. "It has been alleged that Malthus was under considerable obligations to some of Wallace's speculations; and no doubt they may have afforded him hints ..." Description: From 'A Select Collection of Drawings From Curious Antique Gems; Most of Them in the Possession of the Nobility and Gentry of This Kingdom; Etched After the Manner of Rembrandt.', by T. Worlidge, painter, published in London, 1768. Worlidge's last work was this Antique Gems, a series of 182 etchings of ancient gems. He painted portraits of his master Grimaldi and his master's wife about 1720. He married Grimaldi's daughter, and remained on close terms with Alexander Grimaldi, his master's son. apud Henr. Ludovicum Broenner, Francofurti et Lipsiae, fifth edition, 1754 - Contemporary half sheep, spine gilt, title in red and black with engraved vignette, marbled pastedown endpapers, all edges marbled, 8vo, 20 cm, [16], 17-23, [1], 988, [65] pp. One of the leading bibliographers of his time, Struve (1671-1738) served as librarian at the University of Jena and helped to inaugurate the genre of historia litteraria, which aimed to provide a chiefly historical account of select works in various subject fields, especially those considered useful in academic studies. First published in 1704, Struve's Introductio developed from a history into a true bibliography of scholarly learning as subsequent editors added to later editions footnotes containing new material and corrections. This 1754 edition was fully revised by J.C. Fischer and it or J.F. Jugler's edition are the most useful. In addition to discussions of scholarly literature, the Introductio includes much of bibliographic and bibliophilic interest, including a survey of literary societies, sections on libraries in Germany and throughout Europe, banned books, and the history of printing. Archer Taylor noted that "the section devoted to catalogues of private libraries has become almost a bibliography of them" and that "the best eighteenth-century account of library history is that written by J.G. Struve.it contains, especially in the editions by J.C. Fischer and J.F. Jugler, abundant references to institutional catalogues." First edition of this history of the conquest of China by the Manchus written under an anagram of the letters in his name Vojeu de Brunem.
